THE GUIDE

Keep Nightmare Sigils that create runs you intend to play. Salvage unwanted ones for Sigil Powder after checking their affixes and whether they open a standard dungeon or an Escalation. The dungeon name is only part of the decision: the activity type, reward opportunity, and demands on your build matter too.

Blizzard's Nightmare Dungeon affix overview explains reward modifiers and Escalating Nightmares, including which features remain beyond Season 9.

A useful Sigil collection should make your next session easy to start. If choosing a run takes longer than preparing your character, sort the collection into a small play queue and a separate set of deliberate keeps. Here is a practical way to make those decisions without relying on an outdated list of Sigil tiers.

Read a Sigil in this order

First identify what it opens. A Nightmare Dungeon Sigil and an Escalation Sigil represent different commitments. Next read every affix, including the reward-related text. Finally, consider the current difficulty and whether your build can handle that combination comfortably.

Do not choose by a familiar dungeon name while ignoring the rest of the tooltip. A route you like can become a poor match for your session if its mechanics demand attention you were not planning to give it.

Check Question to answer Practical consequence
Activity type Single dungeon or Escalation? Decide whether you want one run or a chain
Reward affix What additional opportunity does it describe? Plan what to look for inside
Enemy or environmental effects What might interrupt my build? Choose a manageable run or save it
Personal objective Why am I using this Sigil today? Keep runs that serve a concrete goal

Treat this as a reading order rather than a tier list. It continues to work when an update changes the pool of available dungeons or modifies an affix.

Recognize what the reward affix asks you to do

Several permanent Nightmare Dungeon additions reward attention to the activity rather than simply recognizing a name in your inventory.

Affix What it adds How to prepare
Treasure Breach Treasure Goblins within the dungeon Watch for the added targets while following the route
Horadric Strongroom A guaranteed Strongroom Be ready to enter the extra encounter
Forgotten Wisdom Experience opportunities, including an experience well Pay attention to the well and drops while progressing
Power Shrines Extra shrines of a specified type Read which shrine type the Sigil names

These are examples, not a complete affix database. They also do not establish a fixed loot amount for a run. The useful choice depends on whether you will engage with the feature the Sigil adds.

An equipment-focused route and an experience-focused route can both be good, but for different sessions. Name your goal before comparing them. That is more practical than preserving every Sigil because its tooltip contains a potentially valuable word.

Give Dungeon Delve a second look

The current game can upgrade the Dungeon Delve affix when entering Torment, with Ancestral Elites, Mythic Prankster, and Treasure Breach among the possible results. This is a chance, not a promise of the outcome you wanted.

That distinction matters when sorting. Do not describe an ordinary Dungeon Delve Sigil to your group as a guaranteed Mythic Prankster run. If you keep it because you want to explore the possible upgrade, label it mentally as an experiment rather than reserving a whole session around an assumed result.

Read the activity information after entering as well as the inventory tooltip before activation. Your route through the dungeon should respond to the affixes actually present.

Separate standard runs from Escalations

Escalating Nightmares link three Nightmare Dungeons. In Torment, affixes accumulate as you move through the chain, and completing the third leads to Exalted Astaroth. The decision to use an Escalation Sigil therefore includes the later parts of the activity, not just the opening dungeon.

Before starting one with other players, agree that the plan is to follow the chain. At each transition, read the next dungeon's affix information and adjust your approach. A comfortable first section is not evidence that every later combination will feel the same.

Keep an Escalation for a session when you want that format. For a short experiment with a changed build, a standard Sigil may be easier to evaluate because you can isolate what happened in one dungeon.

Salvage deliberately at the Occultist

Unwanted Sigils can become Sigil Powder. The current published salvage values are 20 Powder for a Nightmare Dungeon Sigil and 100 for an Escalation Sigil. Check the in-game preview before confirming, especially after an update. These are salvage returns, not the price of crafting a replacement.

Use individual selection while sorting a mixed inventory. Read the item you are about to remove, confirm that it is not part of your planned play queue, and check the expected return. Only use a broad salvage action after reviewing everything it would consume.

Do not confuse a larger Powder return with a rule that you should salvage that item. An Escalation you intend to run can be worth keeping even when it offers more Powder than an ordinary Sigil. Conversely, saving it indefinitely has little practical value if you never want to play that format.

A simple inventory example

Suppose you have several standard Sigils, a Treasure Breach you want to try, and an Escalation you planned with friends. You also have duplicate runs with effects that repeatedly interrupt your current build.

Put the planned Escalation aside first. Keep the Treasure Breach for its specific encounter opportunity. Choose a few standard runs for the next session, then review the unwanted duplicates for salvage. You have preserved actual plans and removed decisions you would otherwise make again tomorrow.

After playing the queue, record a brief reason for any poor fit: awkward route, a mechanic you disliked, or an objective that did not match your goal. Use those observations when sorting the next group of drops. A personal rejection list based on experience is more useful than copying another class's preferences unchanged.

Before activating your next Sigil

Read the full item, check the activity type, and agree on the plan if you are grouped. Keep your salvage queue separate from the Sigils you intend to use. Once a Nightmare Dungeon is complete, the game allows another Nightmare Sigil to be activated from inside, so you can prepare the next choice before finishing the current run.

If you want assistance with a particular dungeon objective, compare the options on our Diablo 4 page after deciding which activity format fits your session.

Frequently asked questions

Which Nightmare Sigil affix is best?

Choose the one that serves the session you actually want. Use the examples above to match an encounter opportunity with your available time and attention. A valuable feature only helps if you intend to engage with it.

Should I salvage every duplicate dungeon?

Keep duplicates when you want to repeat that route and their affixes suit your build. Salvage excess copies when they compete for space with runs you are more likely to use. Identical dungeon names alone are not enough to judge the complete Sigils.

Is an Escalation Sigil the same as a Nightmare Dungeon Sigil?

No. Treat it as a commitment to a sequence rather than one isolated test run. Agree on that plan with your group before activating it, and keep it separate from the ordinary runs queued for a short session.

Can Dungeon Delve guarantee a Mythic Prankster run?

No. Its Torment upgrade can produce different affixes. Keep the Sigil if you want to try that opportunity, but do not plan around a guaranteed result that the tooltip does not promise.
