THE GUIDE

Quick summary

  • Forbidden Rites is the Path of Exile 2 event league that came with patch 0.5.5 on September 4, 2026. It runs until 1.0 on December 11, alongside Runes of Aldur (GGG FAQ, Wccftech).
  • In the campaign, every area has a Ritual. Boss Ritual clusters appear twice per Act and once per Interlude, and they chain bosses into later fights (GGG patch notes).
  • In endgame, Ritual can reward a Sacred Bloom, which only exists in Forbidden Rites. A Bloom adds the Viridian Wildwood to a cluster of maps. You collect wisps there, and they empower that map's monsters for more risk and more loot.
  • There are four empowering wisps: Primal, Vivid, Wild and Sacred. There are also two white utility wisps. Mobalytics' post-launch guide lists all their effects, including the Sacred Wisp that preview guides called "unknown."
  • Using more than one Ritual Tablet adds an extra Altar when possible and raises how many wisps you collect. The Royal Lenience notable lets Tribute you've already offered to the King pay for deferrals, at 500% more cost.

Get Sacred Blooms from endgame Ritual

  1. Run Rituals in maps. Clear all the altars in the map to reveal the whole Favors list.
  2. Look for a Sacred Bloom in Favors. It appears as a Ritual reward (GGG patch notes).
  3. Defer it if you're short. Deferring holds a Favor for a later Ritual. With Royal Lenience, Tribute you've already offered to the King can pay for the deferral, at 500% more offered Tribute.
  4. Slot Ritual Tablets. Two or more Ritual Tablets add an Altar when possible and raise the number of wisps you collect.

Place the Bloom on your Atlas

GGG says a Bloom adds the Viridian Wildwood to "a cluster of Maps." Mobalytics adds detail: it applies to the node you choose and all connected nodes. Mobalytics also says the Wildwood can appear randomly when you open maps, and that a Bloom guarantees it. Since GGG's wording says cluster, we follow GGG and Mobalytics.

Choose maps you can already clear comfortably.

Route the Viridian Wildwood

Mobalytics' post-launch guide describes how the Wildwood actually plays:

  • Darkness and light. The Wildwood starts dark. Moving reveals the area but uses up a hidden "light" resource. When light runs out, a portal appears to take you out.
  • Layout. The zone is roughly diamond-shaped, with a point of interest at each of the four tips. The area around each point lights up as you approach, and wisps cluster there.
  • Trails. Wisps form trails that lead to points of interest.
  • White wisps. Small white wisps refill your light. Large white wisps reveal a wide area without using light.
  • Omen Altars. These are hidden off the paths, in the dark, and drop omens.

Route (Mobalytics):

  1. On entry, find the nearest wisp trail and follow it to a point of interest.
  2. Work out which tip you're at from the trail directions and dead-end walls. Then run diagonally toward the next tip.
  3. Collect small white wisps whenever you can, since more light means more wisps.
  4. Once you've found all four points of interest, spend your remaining light hunting for Omen Altars.
  5. After the portal appears, go back for any wisps you skipped if you want the maximum count.

Choose your wisps

Every empowering wisp gives monsters damage reduction and increased damage. Each one also adds its own reward effect (Mobalytics):

Wisp (color) Reward effect on empowered monsters Best for Source
Primal (blue) Chance to upgrade Normal monsters to Magic Pack density Mobalytics
Vivid (yellow) Chance for extra modifiers on Rare monsters Rare-heavy farming Mobalytics
Wild (purple) Increased rarity of items dropped Loot rarity Mobalytics
Sacred (orange) Item rarity, chance for map bosses in rare packs, extra rare modifiers and Normal-to-Magic upgrades Everything at once; rare Mobalytics (post-launch)
Small white Refills light; no empowerment Longer runs Mobalytics
Large white Reveals a wide area; no empowerment Faster navigation Mobalytics

Wisps are released into the map when you leave the Wildwood and can't be saved for another map.

Scale up wisp investment only as fast as your build's defenses allow. See our league starter builds for builds that hold up in juiced maps.

Stack the Wildwood with other mechanics

Layer What it adds Stacks repeatedly? Source
Sacred Bloom wisps Monster upgrades, rare modifiers, rarity More wisps mean a stronger effect Mobalytics
Ritual Tablets (2+) Extra Altar; more wisps collected Yes, as GGG describes GGG patch notes

The value comes from stacking it with Delirium and tablets. A fix in 0.5.5 also stops Delirium progress while you're in the Wildwood (GGG patch notes), so the side trip doesn't eat your Delirium timer.

Track the Ritual and Wildwood fixes

Patch Change Source
0.5.5 (Sep 4) League launch; Sacred Bloom, boss Ritual clusters, party Tribute, Royal Lenience GGG patch notes
0.5.5 follow-ups Fixed Delirium progress not pausing in the Viridian Wildwood GGG patch notes
0.5.5 follow-ups Fixed deferral costs showing wrong values, and Deferred items updating their cost on every Favors reroll GGG patch notes
0.5.5 follow-ups The Plagueling from Chetza no longer revives in Rituals GGG patch notes
0.5.5e (Oct 5) Fixed some boss kills stopping Ritual encounters from starting GGG patch notes

Finish the challenges before 1.0

Forbidden Rites has its own challenges. Completing 2, 4, 6 and 8 earns the Locust Footprints, the Locust Swarm Rare Finisher Effect, the Wildwood Guardian Pet and the Wildwood Affliction Level-up effect. These rewards can only be earned in this league. You also earn pieces of a Forbidden Rites Totem for your hideout, one for each challenge (GGG patch notes).

Both Forbidden Rites and Runes of Aldur end with 1.0 on December 11 (GGG FAQ, Wccftech). Wccftech reports that early access characters move to a separate early access realm at 1.0, and that the new economy starts from zero.

Compare ways to play the league

Approach Best for Strength Weakness Basis
Campaign Ritual chains, then normal mapping New characters Leveling gear and uniques from boss chains No Wildwood juice GGG patch notes
Bloom on lightly modded maps Mid-endgame builds Learn routes with lower risk Smaller payoff —
Bloom plus Ritual Tablets plus Delirium Strong late-game builds Highest reward ceiling Most dangerous monsters GGG patch notes
Stay in Runes of Aldur Unfinished Aldur challenges Keep your progress No Sacred Blooms GGG patch notes

Alts, returning players and Standard

  • Alts: Tribute and Favors belong to each Ritual, so plan each character's Blooms separately. Challenges are tracked per league account (GGG patch notes).
  • Returning players: If you last played 0.5.0, Expedition is now a core Atlas mechanic in Standard and Forbidden Rites, and Runes of Aldur content has moved into core (GGG patch notes, GGG FAQ).
  • Standard and Runes of Aldur: You get party Tribute, tablet changes and Royal Lenience, but not Sacred Blooms.

What does the Sacred Wisp do? Mobalytics' post-launch guide says it combines item rarity, map bosses in rare packs, extra rare modifiers and Normal-to-Magic upgrades, on top of more monster damage and damage reduction.

Do Ritual Tablets help the Wildwood? Yes. Using more than one adds an extra Altar when possible and increases the wisps you collect.

What does Royal Lenience do? It lets Tribute you've already offered to the King pay for deferrals, at 500% more offered Tribute.

Can I get Sacred Blooms in Standard? No. GGG says Sacred Blooms only drop in the Forbidden Rites league.

When does Forbidden Rites end? At the 1.0 launch on December 11, 2026, along with Runes of Aldur (GGG FAQ).
