WoW Midnight Professions Guide: Best Picks, Combos, Knowledge
WoW Midnight professions guide for Season 2: four tier lists compared, best combos by goal and armor type, weekly knowledge sources, Concentration.

In this guide 9 sections
Quick summary
- Midnight has 11 primary professions plus Cooking and Fishing. You can have two primary professions per character. Skill goes from 1 to 100, and crafting orders unlock at skill 15.
- Nobody agrees on the "best" profession. Icy Veins' Season 2 gold list puts Inscription, Jewelcrafting, Tailoring, and Alchemy (potions) at S. Pick by your goal.
- Knowledge Points matter more than skill. Do the trainer quest, both treasures, the Thalassian Treatise, and Patron orders every week, and the Darkmoon Faire quest every month.
- Season 2 gives you one respec per profession per character at Theremis in the Silvermoon Bazaar (Method). Use it after you've chosen a long-term specialization, not before.
- If you want to be self-sufficient, pair each crafting profession with its gathering profession. If you want gold, check your own server's Auction House before you commit.
Know the professions and the rules
You choose two primary professions (crafting or gathering) and can level both secondary professions, Cooking and Fishing, on every character.
| Type | Professions | What they make or gather in Midnight |
|---|---|---|
| Crafting (gear) | Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, Tailoring | Armor and weapons with five quality ranks. Tailoring also has a cloth cooldown. |
| Crafting (consumables) | Alchemy, Inscription, Jewelcrafting, Enchanting | Potions, flasks, Vantus Runes, gems, enchants, and Thalassian Treatises |
| Crafting (utility) | Engineering | Gadgets, gear, and tinkers |
| Gathering | Herbalism, Mining, Skinning | Herbs, ore, and leather. Two quality ranks. |
| Secondary | Cooking, Fishing | Food and feasts. In Season 2, fish from Venom Fishing on the Coiled Isle. |
Icy Veins lists the Midnight rules changes you need to know:
- Consumables have two quality ranks, down from three in The War Within. That makes top-rank potions easier to craft, provided you spend enough Concentration. Crafted gear still has five ranks.
- Artisan's Moxie is a profession-specific currency, such as Artisan Leatherworker's Moxie. You use it mainly to buy recipes. It replaces Artisan's Acuity and is no longer needed for recrafting.
- Crafting orders unlock at skill 15. Patron NPC orders can reward Moxie, recipes, materials, and Knowledge.
- Reagent bags are available to everyone. Most materials stack to 1,000 and most consumables to 200.

Choose with a goal table
| Your goal | First pick | Pair with | Why (source) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raid and Mythic+ progress | Alchemy or Inscription | Herbalism | Potions, flasks, and Vantus Runes. Icy Veins notes Vantus Rune: Tides is a direct Season 2 upgrade. |
| Gold with little setup | Herbalism | Mining or Skinning | Gather and sell. Icy Veins warns of a material glut, so check prices first. |
| Steady gold over the season | Inscription or Jewelcrafting | Herbalism / Mining | Strong Concentration builds for consumables (Icy Veins) |
| Crafted gear for yourself | Your armor type's crafting profession | Its gathering profession | Five quality ranks. Recrafting no longer needs Moxie. |
| Housing decor | Alchemy or Inscription | Herbalism | — |
| Fun and utility | Engineering | Mining | for gadgets |
Pair by armor type
| Armor | Classes | Self-sufficient pair |
|---|---|---|
| Plate | Death Knight, Paladin, Warrior | Blacksmithing + Mining |
| Hunter, Shaman, Evoker | Leatherworking + Skinning | |
| Leather | Demon Hunter, Druid, Monk, Rogue | Leatherworking + Skinning |
| Cloth | Mage, Priest, Warlock | Tailoring + Enchanting |
Gear crafting matters less than it sounds. You only need a few crafted pieces each season, and anyone can get them through crafting orders. Our Season 2 gearing guide covers which slots to fill with crafted gear.
Example: you main a Restoration Druid and play Mythic+. You don't need Leatherworking to get crafted leather, because a crafting order covers it. Alchemy + Herbalism gives you potions and flasks for every key and something to sell.
Start your profession the right way
- Learn your professions in Silvermoon City. Wowhead says the introductory quest comes from Captain Flaresworn at the Work Order station. It unlocks your trainer's weekly quests.
- Craft every recipe once. Icy Veins says a First Craft gives Moxie and Knowledge. First-time gathers count too, according to Method.
- Push to skill 15 so you can take crafting orders, including Patron orders.
- Save Concentration for high-value crafts.
- Plan your specialization tree before you spend Knowledge. Points are permanent apart from the one Season 2 respec per profession.
Collect Knowledge every week
| Source | Knowledge | How often | Notes (source) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trainer weekly quest | 1–4 | Weekly | Crafters fill orders. Gatherers and Enchanters hand in materials. Some professions need skill 25 (Wowhead, Method). |
| Crafting treasures | 2 each, two a week | Weekly | Crafters, including Enchanters, find them in regular treasures in Midnight zones (Method) |
| Thalassian Treatise | 1 (2 with Calm Hands) | Weekly | Crafted by scribes and warbound, so order one if you don't have a scribe (Wowhead) |
| Patron crafting orders | About 16–24 | Weekly | The biggest source for crafters (community, 12.0.7) |
| Gathering drops | About 6 | Weekly | Gatherers get drops as they gather. Enchanters get theirs by disenchanting. |
| Darkmoon Faire quest | 3, plus 2 skill and 15 Moxie | Monthly | Runs for a week from the first Sunday of the month |
| World profession treasures | 3 each (8 in total) | Once | One-time pickups |
| Renown books | 10 | Once | Method says patch 12.1 added another Renown book for every profession |
Example: your scribe crafts Thalassian Treatises and mails them to your three alts every week. Each alt gets a point in each of its two professions without a trip to the Auction House. Since Treatises are warbound, this is the cheapest way to keep alts' professions moving.
Add these sources to your reset routine with our Midnight weekly checklist.
Use the Season 2 respec carefully
Season 2 gives each character one respec per profession, from Theremis in the Silvermoon Bazaar (Method). Use it in three situations:
- You picked the wrong branch in Season 1, for example flask Alchemy when potions now pay better.
- The demand you specialized for has gone. For example, you specialized in Season 1 gear slots that nobody orders anymore.
- You've settled on your professions for the rest of the expansion. It's one respec, so don't spend it trying out a build.
Icy Veins has since confirmed the respec for Season 2.
Compare ways to level a profession
| Method | Speed | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Craft trainer recipes yourself | Slow | Materials from your own gathering | Earns First Craft Knowledge and Moxie along the way |
| Buy materials and mass-craft | Fast | Gold for materials | Alchemy's Light's Potential route. Check your own server's material prices. |
| Fill crafting orders | Medium | Customers provide the materials | Needs skill 15 and pays tips and rewards |
| Darkmoon Faire top-up | +2 skill a month | Cheap quest materials | Mainly worth it for the Knowledge |
If you're returning, boosted, or playing alts
- Returning from The War Within? Acuity is gone, replaced by Moxie for each profession. Consumables now have two quality ranks instead of three. Stat-boosting optional reagents now come from the Artisan's Consortium Payout bag, in the form of bind-on-pickup items like Ingenious Identifier (Icy Veins). Go to Silvermoon City and pick up the intro quest first.
- Boosted or powerleveled to 90? Your professions start at 1, and the weekly Knowledge sources reward you only for the weeks you actually do them. Start with the one-time sources: First Crafts, the world treasures, and Renown books. Our catch-up gearing guide covers the rest of a fresh 90's checklist.
- Running alts? Give each alt a different profession pair so your crafting covers more, and feed them all Treatises from one scribe. Gathering alts can stop once they've used their weekly Knowledge drops. Our gold routes post compares what gathering earns with other gold methods.
