Albion Online Ancient Lands Guide: Patch 3 Portals and Loot
Albion Online Ancient Lands guide for Dragonfire Patch 3: portal sizes and timers, loot rules, the 1200 IP cap, Drakes, Fire Drake and Spirit Waystones.

Quick summary
- What it is: floating islands linked by Leygates, reached through open-world portals. You clear islands for Keystones, kill four Drakes, then fight the Fire Drake for the biggest chest (Dragonfire notes).
- Loot rules: Royal Continent portals lead to the partial-loot orange version, where only inventory drops. Outlands and Roads of Avalon portals lead to full loot. Since Patch 2, items you carry into orange lands are frozen and don't drop.
- Soft cap: 1200 item power. Above it you keep 20% of the excess in orange lands and 35% in black lands (Dragonfire notes).
- Patch 3 (Oct 12, the current live patch): small Yellow Zone portals now spawn about every 15.5 minutes, but their Fame and loot were cut 30%. Red and Black Zone small portals kept full rewards.
- Main reward: Spirit Waystone Fragments. Ten fragments make a Waystone at the Artifact Foundry, which opens the Dragon Sanctuary raid.
The Ancient Lands are the headline PvPvE activity of Albion Online's Dragonfire update (August 31, 2026), and Sandbox Interactive has changed their rules in each of the three patches since. This Albion Online Ancient Lands guide uses the live values after Dragonfire Patch 3: which portal to take, when you can enter, what you lose on death, how a full run works and what to do with the Waystone Fragments you bring home. Background on the design comes from Sandbox's Dev Talk on the Ancient Lands; zone tiers come from All Things Albion, which reads the game files.
If you're new to Albion's zone colors, read the beginner guide to zone rules and a replaceable first kit first. Everything below assumes you know what Yellow, Red and Black Zones mean.
Ancient Lands portals: sizes, matchmaking and loot rules
Portals come in three sizes, and the number of players who enter decides your matchmaking pool (Dragonfire notes).
| Portal | Party size | Matched against | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 1–5 | Solo vs solo, 2–3 vs 2–3, 4–5 vs 4–5 | Dragonfire notes |
| Medium | 5–7 | 5–7 | Dragonfire notes |
| Large | 15–20 | 15–20 | Dragonfire notes |
Where the portal sits matters as much as its size.
| Portal location | Ancient Lands version | What drops on death | Rewards after Patch 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Royal Continent (Yellow Zone) | Partial-loot orange | Items picked up inside (carried items are frozen since Patch 2) | Small portals: Fame and loot −30% |
| Royal Continent (Red Zone) | Full-loot | Everything | Small portals unchanged |
| Outlands and Roads of Avalon | Full-loot | Everything | Unchanged |
Which to choose:
- Small Yellow Zone portals if you're solo or want to chain runs. Patch 3 says they're now frequent enough that "players can chain this content."
- Red or Black Zone small portals if you want full Fame and loot and accept full-loot risk.
- Medium and Large portals for groups. Their rewards weren't cut, and Patch 2 raised their chest loot (about 50% more non-Drake loot in Medium, about 140% more base loot in Large).
Ancient Lands portal timers after Patch 3
Portal timers changed in every patch. These are the live values after Patch 3. At launch every portal stayed open for only three minutes after unlocking, and small portals were locked for 30 minutes, so older guides overstate the wait.
| Timer | Small (Yellow) | Small (Red/Black) | Medium | Large | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Average spawn time | 15.5 min (was 45) | Not stated | Not stated | 50% more likely than before; more likely at prime times | Patch 3 |
| Chance to appear in a region | 33% (was 25%) | 33% (was 25%) | Not stated | Not stated | Patch 3 |
| Lock time before entry | 5 min (was 15) | 15 min (Patch 1 value) | 60 min (launch value) | 180 min (launch value) | Patches 1 and 3, launch notes |
| Entry window after unlock | 10 min | 10 min | 5 min | 5 min | Patches 1 and 3 |
| Portal lifetime | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | 60 min (was 45) | Patch 1 |
Patch 3 changed the lock time only for Yellow Zone small portals, so Red and Black Zone small portals still use Patch 1's 15 minutes. Medium and Large lock times have kept their launch values in every patch note since.
How to enter (Dragonfire notes):
- Every party member declares ready and channels for a short time.
- Finishing the channel grants temporary invulnerability.
- The leader decides exactly when the party goes in.
Patch 3 adds one rule: if you cancel a finished portal channel, you're silenced for a short time. This stops groups from faking an entry to jump other parties.
Since Patch 1, portals show on the World Map regardless of distance.
Ancient Lands item power cap (1200 IP soft cap)
The Ancient Lands have a 1200 IP soft cap (Dragonfire notes). Item power under 1200 counts in full. Only part of the excess counts above it:
| Your raw IP | Orange land (20% of excess) | Black land (35% of excess) |
|---|---|---|
| 1,200 | 1,200 | 1,200 |
| 1,300 | 1,220 | 1,235 |
| 1,500 | 1,260 | 1,305 |
| 1,700 | 1,300 | 1,375 |
Our own math using the official percentages. The 1,500 row matches the Albion Online Database's example.
What this means: overgearing barely helps in orange lands. Gear that reaches about 1200 IP gets most of the value, so bring a kit you can afford to replace. The Dragon Sanctuary has no IP cap (Dragonfire notes), so save your best PvE gear for it.
Item Freeze (orange lands only). Patch 2 added Item Freeze: everything in your inventory when you step through a Royal Continent portal is frozen and can't drop if you die. Anything you pick up inside is not frozen. In practice, an orange run can only cost you that run's loot, while a black run can cost your whole kit.
How to clear the Ancient Lands: Keystones, Drakes and the Fire Drake
Inside, your party is anonymous. You only see your own party's names, and each group starts at its own spawn (Dragonfire notes).
- Do the local quest. Each outer island has one. Since Patch 1, you complete it by defeating 50% of the island's mobs, and marmots don't count. Patch 3 added a rule for Small and Medium lands: you also have to kill the island's Drake.
- Take the Leygate Keystone. Completing the quest gives you a Keystone that works on any Leygate. You can pull it out of an active gate and carry it somewhere else to change the route. Activated gates stay open for every group.
- Loot the island chest. Since Patch 2, island chests (except the center island's) only unlock after the island quest. This stops players from sniping chests on Drake islands.
- Kill all four Drakes. Their islands are marked on the Minimap and Region Map. Completing those four islands finishes the global quest.
- Kill the Fire Drake. The center island unlocks after a short delay. Beating the Fire Drake pays out the largest loot and opens a portal home.
To leave early, use any entry portal on the outer islands. You return to your original region, briefly protected and invisible (Dev Talk).
Drake chests vs the Fire Drake: Patch 3 moved about 10% of each regular Drake chest's value into the Fire Drake chest. It also gave that chest a much higher drop chance for the new artifacts. Finishing the full run is now worth more than raiding Drake islands and leaving.
Mobs are weaker than at launch. Patch 1 halved regular enemy health in Large lands (Drakes excluded). Patch 3 then cut mob health and damage by another 10% in Small and Medium lands and 20% in Large lands, and lowered two dangerous attacks: Stonebreaker Berserkers' Pulse Shock (400 to 300) and the Renowned Huntress's Cross Fissure (1350 to 1000).
Spirit Essence and Ancient Altar buffs
Spirit Essence is a stacking buff that raises Fame and your damage and defense against mobs. You only get and use it inside the Ancient Lands (Dragonfire notes).
You get Essence from:
- Dragon Statues (for your whole party).
- Mobs, which have a chance to give it.
- Drakes, which always give it.
- PvP kills.
PvP costs you Essence. If you're knocked down in PvP, 50% of your Essence goes to the other group and the rest is lost. You also lose it all when you leave.
All Things Albion's file data lists each stack as +2% creature Fame, +2% damage vs creatures and +1% defense vs creatures, stacking to 15.
Ancient Altars: offer Ancient Bones (from Drakes and some chests) to earn Draconic Insight, Fame and a Fame buff. A small offering gives +10% Fame for one hour, and a large one gives +20% for two hours. Nearby allies share the rewards. The center island always has an Altar (Dragonfire notes).
Example: a duo in a Yellow Zone small portal collects Statue Essence on the first two islands, offers bones at the center Altar after the Fire Drake, and then chains the next small portal while the two-hour Fame buff is still running. Because Patch 3 portals spawn about every 15.5 minutes, the buff now covers several runs instead of one. If Fame rather than loot is your goal, the Albion Online fame farming category is where that kind of help is listed.
Bleedout rules in the Ancient Lands
When you're knocked down in PvP, you enter Bleedout instead of dying right away. This happens in both orange and black lands (Dragonfire notes).
- An on-screen bar shows how long allies have to revive you.
- The timer drains faster if your party moves away.
- If no allies are left, Bleedout ends quickly.
- Revived players get a stacking 10% max Health debuff that lasts until you leave.
What to do: two revives cost you 20% max HP, so after a messy fight it's often better to extract and requeue. Patch 1 fixed a bug where damage-over-time kills made players invulnerable instead of entering Bleedout.
Spirit Waystone fragments and the Dragon Sanctuary
The Dragon Sanctuary needs a Spirit Waystone (Dragonfire notes). You can get one by:
- Combining 10 Waystone Fragments from the Ancient Lands at the Artifact Foundry.
- Getting a full Waystone as a drop from Fire Drakes or Dragons.
- Trading for one. Waystones and fragments are tradable on the Marketplace.
Waystones range from Tier 6 to Tier 8.4 and set the tier of the Sanctuary they open. Use one in an open-world region of the matching tier, and up to 20 players can enter. That's the Maeve and Azaryon raid.
Sell or use? Because both fragments and finished Waystones are tradable, a solo player who never plans to raid can sell them on the Marketplace. Compare the price against the 2.5% setup fee and the 4% or 8% sales tax before listing; the Albion Online silver farming guide works through that fee math.
Ancient Lands vs other activities
| Activity | Group size | Loot risk | Main reward | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ancient Lands (orange) | 1–20 | Only items picked up inside | Fame, chests, Waystone Fragments, Dragon Blood | Dragonfire notes, Patch 2 |
| Ancient Lands (black) | 1–20 | Full loot | Same, with full rewards on small portals | Patch 3 |
| Dragon Sanctuary | Up to 20 | Not stated in the notes | Azaryon chest, Drake Egg chance (raised about 400% in Patch 2) | Dragonfire notes, Patch 2 |
| Open-world Dragon Attacks | Anyone nearby | Open world | Chest for every contributor; Outlands also give Might and Favor (Might +150% in Patch 3) | Dragonfire notes, Patch 3 |
For how these activities compare as income rather than Fame, including the Mists and Avalonian Dungeons, see the silver farming guide for 2026.
Ancient Lands run checklist
- Check the portal color and size on the World Map.
- Bring a kit around 1200 IP.
- In orange lands, carry what you need: it's frozen. Anything you pick up inside isn't.
- Ready up, and don't cancel a finished channel.
- Clear each island, take the Keystone, then loot the chest.
- Collect Statue Essence and avoid needless PvP knockdowns.
- Kill all four Drakes, then the Fire Drake.
- Bank your Fragments and combine them at the Artifact Foundry.
Alts and returning players
- Returning players: launch-day guides are out of date. The Fame quest, 30-minute locks and 3-minute windows were all changed by Patch 3.
- Multiple accounts: Sandbox's Terms and Conditions allow multiple accounts. However, characters played at the same time can't cooperate or fight together outside cities, hideouts and islands (section 11.2). Two of your own characters in one portal party breaks that rule.
- Gear alts: all you need is a roughly 1200 IP kit, so an alt with a modest set can run orange small portals without falling far behind.

FAQ
How do I get into the Ancient Lands in Albion Online? Find a portal on the World Map, have every party member ready up and channel, and the leader starts the run. Party size sets the portal: Small 1–5, Medium 5–7, Large 15–20 (Dragonfire notes).
Do you lose gear in Yellow Zone Ancient Lands? Royal Continent portals lead to partial-loot orange lands. Since Patch 2's Item Freeze, the items you bring in can't drop, so only loot picked up inside is at risk.
What is the Ancient Lands item power cap? The soft cap is 1200 IP. Above it, 20% of the excess counts in orange lands and 35% in black lands, so 1,500 raw IP plays as 1,260 in orange lands (Dragonfire notes).
How often do Ancient Lands portals spawn? Since Patch 3, small Yellow Zone portals spawn about every 15.5 minutes on average, appear in 33% of regions, unlock after 5 minutes and stay open for 10.
How many fragments make a Spirit Waystone? Ten Waystone Fragments, combined at the Artifact Foundry. Fire Drakes and Dragons can also drop a full Waystone, and both are tradable on the Marketplace (Dragonfire notes).
Are Red Zone Ancient Lands worth it? Red and Black Zone small portals kept full Fame and loot when Patch 3 cut Yellow Zone small portals by 30%. The trade-off is full loot: you can lose your whole kit.
