A useful Clash of Clans upgrade plan connects your village to the army you actually use. Rather than upgrading whatever happens to be affordable, identify what helps your next set of attacks and what requirement must be completed before that improvement becomes available.
Choose an army to learn first
Pick a manageable composition from the troops available at your Town Hall level. Understand which units create the route, which deal the main damage and what support the attack needs. Practise the plan against different layouts before replacing it after a single poor result.
When reviewing an attack, watch where troops went and why. A failed route can make a strong army look weak. Change the deployment or timing before assuming that every troop requires an upgrade.
Connect the upgrade to the plan
List the improvements that support your active army and check their prerequisites in the game. Compare those with village needs such as capacity or access to another relevant system. This produces a reason for the next upgrade rather than an endless generic priority list.
Read the current costs and timers on your own account. Supercell changes progression values over time, so an older Town Hall chart may describe a different balance of time and resources.
Use acceleration items deliberately

Match an item to an upgrade you already intend to complete. Using it only to remove a notification can leave a more important future step waiting. Also check any storage or claim restrictions displayed before accepting a reward.

Before leaving, identify the resource or preparation your next upgrade needs. When you return, work toward that specific step and review one attack along the way.
