Destiny 2 Dungeon Keys Explained: Access and Cross Save
Find the right Destiny 2 Dungeon Key, check bundle ownership, and resolve access or Cross Save confusion before purchasing content for your next dungeon.

In this guide 7 sections
A Destiny 2 Dungeon Key unlocks access to the dungeons attached to that key. When a dungeon is locked, first identify the exact activity and the account you are playing on. Buying another expansion before checking those details can leave you with more content and the same access problem.
There are four useful checks: the dungeon name, the entitlement that covers it, the active account, and any introductory quest requirement. Work through them in that order. This guide focuses on access; it does not assume that a locked activity means your character needs better equipment.
Match the dungeon to its key
These are the named key groups for six dungeons often encountered in older bundles and ownership screens:
| Dungeon you want to enter | Corresponding Dungeon Key |
|---|---|
| Duality | The Witch Queen Dungeon Key |
| Spire of the Watcher | The Witch Queen Dungeon Key |
| Ghosts of the Deep | Lightfall Dungeon Key |
| Warlord's Ruin | Lightfall Dungeon Key |
| Vesper's Host | The Final Shape Dungeon Key |
| Sundered Doctrine | The Final Shape Dungeon Key |
Use this as an entitlement map, not a list of everything you need to buy separately. The current Destiny 2: The Collection bundle includes Dungeon Keys. Check its included-content list and your existing ownership before adding an individual key to a purchase plan. The same dungeon can already be covered by a bundle you own.
The table is intentionally limited to those named key groups. A dungeon outside it should be checked against its own activity and product details; do not assign it to the nearest expansion by release date or theme.
Separate three different kinds of access
An expansion purchase, a Dungeon Key, and an introductory quest answer different questions. The first concerns the content package you bought. The second covers particular dungeon entitlements. The third concerns the character's route into an activity.
For example, Vesper's Host and Sundered Doctrine belong to The Final Shape Dungeon Key. Their entry quests have different names: Rogue Network and The Drowning Labyrinth. Finding one quest does not tell you that the other dungeon's preparation is complete.
Likewise, Ghosts of the Deep uses the Lightfall Dungeon Key and has the Rise introductory quest associated with Hawthorne. Check the quest named by the activity you actually selected. Avoid treating a vendor instruction for one dungeon as a universal instruction for every dungeon.
This distinction gives you a useful reading rule: “requires a key” points toward entitlement, while “requires quest progress” points toward the character's progress. Record the exact message instead of reducing both to “the dungeon is broken.”
Build a short access worksheet
Before changing account settings or purchasing anything, fill in these five lines:
- Activity: the complete dungeon name, not just its expansion.
- Platform: where you are launching the game today.
- Active characters: the character set you expected to see.
- Purchase evidence: the exact product name and purchasing account.
- Blocked step: the wording shown when you select the dungeon.
A product receipt establishes what was purchased; an activity screen shows what this account can launch. Keeping both records makes it easier to spot a mismatch. A screenshot of a store's general expansion page is less useful than the name of the product in your own purchase history.
Do the worksheet for each person in your fireteam. One player having access does not resolve another player's entitlement.
Understand the Cross Save distinction
Cross Save lets you use one chosen character set across linked platforms. It does not merge several character sets, and ordinary DLC licenses do not transfer between platforms. Dungeon Keys have a different rule: they can follow the account through Cross Save.
Bungie's Purchased Destiny Add-Ons guide documents Dungeon Key access, Cross Save, and bundle activation.
For a key included in an expansion bundle, the activation step matters. Set up the intended Cross Save account before first logging into the platform where the bundle was purchased. You may need to launch the game on that original platform to receive the bundled key.
Do not disable Cross Save as a quick troubleshooting experiment. Deactivation brings a 90-day wait before you can enable it again. Check the selected active account and linked platform identity first; a similar display name is not proof that you are using the intended account.
Three situations that look similar but need different checks
You own a key, but the dungeon still asks for access
Compare the exact key name against the table. A Witch Queen key and a Final Shape key cover different activities. Then verify the account on the purchase record against the account currently playing. Resolve that mismatch before treating the purchase as unsuccessful.
You changed platforms and your characters appeared, but content is missing
Character availability confirms one part of the move, not every content entitlement. Determine whether the missing item is a Dungeon Key or a platform DLC license. Then check whether a bundled key was activated on its purchasing platform. Avoid buying a duplicate just because the store on your new platform looks different.
Your friend can enter, but you cannot
Check your own entitlement and quest progress independently. Dungeon Keys cannot be shared between accounts through a console's game-sharing arrangement. Joining the same fireteam is a social connection, not a transfer of the leader's content ownership.
Handle a remaining access issue with evidence
If the correct product and account line up, restart the game and test the same activity again. Keep the before-and-after message. For a quest block, look for the specific quest on that character rather than repeatedly reopening the purchase screen.
An unresolved case should include your worksheet, the transaction identifier, and a screenshot of the activity message. Keep payment information and login credentials private. A concise evidence packet is more useful for resolving an entitlement issue than a long list of purchases without the blocked activity's name.
Once access works, choose your dungeon goal and compare the activity options on our Destiny 2 page. Confirming access first lets you plan a run around playing the content rather than discovering an ownership problem at launch.
Frequently asked questions
Does one Dungeon Key unlock every dungeon?
No. Named keys cover particular groups, as the table shows. A larger bundle may include several keys. Compare its contents with what you already own instead of assuming either one key or one expansion covers every activity.
Do I need to buy the same Dungeon Key on another platform?
A Dungeon Key can travel with the account through Cross Save. First verify your active character set and whether a bundled key has been activated. Ordinary expansion licenses have separate platform rules.
Can the fireteam leader share their key with me?
Each account needs its own relevant entitlement. The leader's access and a platform's game-sharing feature do not provide another account with a Dungeon Key.
Why is a dungeon asking for quest progress when I have the key?
Ownership and quest progress are separate checks. Identify the quest for that dungeon and inspect it on the character you are using. For example, The Drowning Labyrinth belongs to Sundered Doctrine; owning the key does not mean every character's entry steps have been completed.
