THE GUIDE

Quick summary

  • The cap is 550, and it won't go up. Monument of Triumph (Update 9.7.0, June 9, 2026) was Destiny 2's last planned live-service update (Bungie).
  • 10 → 300: returning Guardians start at 10, but loot drops at 300+. Community guides add that Ikora's free New Light kit sets every slot to 300.
  • 300 → ~440: almost every drop is an upgrade. Fireteam Ops Quickplay and fast Solo Ops are the community picks (Item Level Gaming).
  • ~440 → 550: Portal grades do the work. Bungie says an A grade or better keeps raising Power all the way to 550. Expert difficulty starts at A.
  • Your Power is the average of 8 slots, including vault items, so raise your lowest slot first.

Know the Power numbers that matter

Power What it means Source
10 Where a returning Guardian starts Bungie FAQ
300 Minimum Power of new rewards. Entry for matchmade Portal difficulties. Collections drops Bungie 9.7.0
~440 Community "soft cap": world drops stop being easy upgrades Item Level Gaming
400 Legacy content stops giving +1 Bungie 9.7.0
550 The hard cap. It won't increase Bungie

About the 440 and 500 "caps": they're community labels, not Bungie terms. Bungie's 9.7.0 notes say only that A grades or better keep raising Power to 550 and that higher grades give bigger bonuses. Treat 440 and 500 as the points where progress tends to slow down.

Bracket Best activities Goal Source
10 → 300 Claim the New Light kit from Ikora. Equip your highest item per slot from the vault Every slot at 300 Bungie, Item Level Gaming
300 → ~440 Fireteam Ops Quickplay (matchmade, about 10–15 minutes). Solo Ops if you prefer solo. Legacy content, which gives +1 up to 400 Collect drops fast. Don't optimize Item Level Gaming, Bungie
~440 → ~500 Expert Solo Ops (Caldera, K1 Logistics) or Fireteam Ops with modifiers at A/A+. Pinnacle Ops Encore with a fireteam A grade every run Bungie
~500 → 550 Weekly sources: Zavala's Vanguard Armory, featured raid and dungeon encounters, Prime Engrams, and A-or-better grades in Portal activities One targeted drop per weekly source Bungie

Start: 10 to 300

  1. Visit Ikora Rey in the Tower and claim the New Light kit. Community guides say it raises every slot to 300 (Item Level Gaming). If your old gear is already above 300, keep it.
  2. Check Collections and the vault for anything above 300 and equip the highest item per slot.
  3. Never delete the highest item in a slot until something beats it. You can infuse it into a better roll later.

Bungie's FAQ says it removed the old catch-up chest in favor of natural drops at 300+, so the climb you actually plan is 300 to 550.

Climb from 300 to about 440

Almost every reward is an upgrade here.

  • Fireteam Ops Quickplay: matchmade, short, and frequently drops above your Power.
  • Solo Ops: Caldera and K1 Logistics are the community's speed picks.
  • Legacy content: older activities give +1 Power up to 400 (Bungie).
  • Seasonal Hub and activity orders: check for weekly rewards and unclaimed items (Item Level Gaming).

Tip: don't spend time on modifiers yet. Equip the best item per slot after each run and queue again.

Climb from about 440 to 550 with grades

Know the grade targets

Bungie's 9.7.0 notes list each difficulty's target grade:

Difficulty Target grade Use it for
Normal B Learning an activity
Advanced B+ Fireteam Ops with modifiers to reach A
Expert A The default Power farm. A clean run hits A
Master A+ Bigger bonuses if you clear reliably
Grandmaster S Weekly, with a capable fireteam
Ultimate S+ Top-end groups

Bungie also says Portal reward Power is no longer capped by the difficulty you pick. An A grade drops at the same Power on any difficulty, and higher grades give larger bonuses. Bungie hasn't published what a B or B+ gives, so aim for A.

Push the grade with modifiers

Your grade comes from a Challenge Multiplier (shared by the fireteam and raised by Banes and other modifiers) and a Reward Multiplier (yours alone). The rewards forecast before launch shows where you'll land. Time bonuses and bonus objectives can lift the final grade (IGN).

Scoring depends on the activity (IGN):

Activity Scored on
Fireteam Ops Kills. Don't rush past enemies
Solo Ops and Exotic missions Objectives and speed. Kills don't count
Wave modes (Onslaught) Waves completed

Pick a difficulty you can finish every time, then add modifiers until the forecast says A. A failed run pays nothing.

Compare the main activities

Activity Pros Cons Best for
Fireteam Ops Quickplay Matchmade, short, steady drops Less control over grade 300–440
Solo Ops (Expert) Fast (Caldera, K1 Logistics), repeatable, starts at A Solo only 440–550, solo players
Pinnacle Ops / Encore High grades with a coordinated fireteam Needs a group 440–550 fireteams
Grandmaster Starts at S 30–60 minutes. Needs a capable team Above 500
Master featured raid Power plus raid loot and Tier 5 Long, needs a team Above 500, raiders
Crucible Drops gear. Community guides call PvP a valid path Slower for most players PvP fans
Legacy content +1 up to 400 Stops at 400 Filling gaps

Fix your lowest slot

Example: seven slots at 510 and boots at 470 average 505. Raising the boots to 510 lifts the average to 510. Pushing your helmet to 520 instead would only raise it to about 506. Weekly sources let you target a slot (Zavala's Armory, featured dungeon and raid encounters, Prime Engrams). Pick those for your weakest slot.

Use weekly sources above 500

  • Grandmaster clears: S-grade starts. Run them on the character furthest behind.
  • Master featured raid encounters: Power plus Tier 5 chances.
  • Prime Engrams: rare, high-Power drops.
  • Featured dungeon and raid: Tier 5 sources each week (Bungie 9.7.0).

Chase Gear Tier separately from Power

Since The Edge of Fate, gear also has a Tier. Higher tiers bring better stats, armor set bonuses, and extra weapon perks. Tier 5 is the top, and Tier doesn't change your Power (Bungie FAQ).

Source Tier (Bungie 9.7.0)
Featured dungeon (weekly) Tier 5 weapons and armor
Featured raid encounters Deepsight weapons or Tier 5 armor
Non-featured dungeon, Master Tier 5 weapons and armor
Public events, heroic Tier 4, with a Tier 5 chance
Public events during a Distortion One tier higher

Our raid prep guide and dungeon preparation guide help with those clears. Some need an expansion or Dungeon Key. See our Dungeon Keys guide.

New, returning, and alt players

  • Returning from before The Edge of Fate: the old soft, powerful, and pinnacle caps are gone. Bungie's FAQ says Powerful gear "now loosely refers to anything that provides your Guardian with a Power boost." Power won't reset again (Bungie 9.7.0).
  • Ignore stale guides: if a guide mentions a 450 cap, seasonal resets to 200, or "Persistent vs Seasonal Power," it predates Monument of Triumph.
  • Alts: Power is account-wide, so run weekly sources on all three characters.

Do you need 550?

Not for most content. Normal raids, dungeons, strikes, and story content are playable well below the cap. If you're farming featured raids for Tier 5, being close to 500 makes Master much easier.

Review your plan each week

On reset: check the featured raid and dungeon, run Zavala's Armory, then put the rest of your time into A-grade runs that target your lowest slot. Write down your slot spread so you know what to chase next.

Infuse without wasting materials

Infusion costs a flat 1 Enhancement Core and 5,000 Glimmer at every Power level. Unstable Cores were removed in Update 9.1.5.2 (October 2025), so there is no separate currency above 200 and no cost that grows with the Power gap. Infuse only into pieces you will keep: the route above raises Power faster than infusing low drops.

Frequently asked questions

What is the max Power level in Destiny 2?

  1. Bungie's Monument of Triumph FAQ and the 9.7.0 notes say it won't increase.

Why did my Power reset to 10?

Bungie's FAQ says freshly returning Guardians start at 10 under the current system. Loot drops at 300+, and community guides add that Ikora's New Light kit puts every slot at 300.

What is the fastest way to raise Power from 300 to 550?

Fireteam Ops Quickplay to around 440, then Expert Solo Ops or modifier-boosted Fireteam Ops at A or better. Bungie says A or higher keeps raising Power to 550.

Is there still a soft cap in Destiny 2?

Not officially. Community guides call ~440 a soft cap and ~500 a hard cap because progress slows there, but Bungie's notes only say A grades keep you climbing to 550.

Which difficulty should I farm for Power?

Expert. Its target grade is A by default, and since 9.7.0, reward Power isn't capped by difficulty.

Does my vault count toward Power?

Yes. Your Power uses the highest item per slot across equipped gear, inventory, and vault, so don't delete your best item in a slot.

Are there still Pinnacle drops in Destiny 2?

Not as a separate tier. Grades replaced the pinnacle ladder, and weekly sources like Zavala's Armory and Prime Engrams fill the role above 500.

Does Gear Tier affect Power?

No. Power sets your strength in Power-enabled content. Tier sets stats, armor set bonuses, and extra weapon perks.
