Destiny 2 Unvaulting Guide 2026: What's Returning and When
Destiny 2 unvaulting explained: what Bungie promised, every vaulted campaign, destination and raid, the progress update and what you can play now.

In this guide 12 sections
Quick summary
- Bungie is restoring vaulted content. In "The Next Chapter for Bungie" (September 2026), it said it is "beginning the work of bringing vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids back into the game, where they will be available to all Destiny 2 players."
- No dates and no order yet. Bungie hasn't said what returns first. Old content needs updated lighting, encounters, combatants and systems before it can come back (The Game Post).
- A progress update is promised. Head of product Josh Deane set an end-of-October target and said it won't be a traditional roadmap but will be told "through the lens of a progress bar" (Insider Gaming). As of October 28, 2026 it hasn't been published.
- The candidates: the Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind and Forsaken campaigns; six destinations including Mercury, Mars, Io and Titan; and raids like Leviathan, Scourge of the Past and Crown of Sorrow (Destinypedia).
- The rest of the game is still live. Monument of Triumph (June 9, 2026) kept all current content available indefinitely. The latest patch is 9.7.0.5, released October 7 (Bungie Help, SenseOS).
Destiny 2 unvaulting is Bungie's plan to put removed content back into the game after years in the Destiny Content Vault. This guide covers what Bungie's The Next Chapter for Bungie post actually promised, the full list of what is still vaulted, what's playable today under Bungie Help's Monument of Triumph support guide, and how to get ready. The vaulted list comes from the community wiki Destinypedia.
Bungie hasn't published a release schedule, so everything about timing below is labeled as reported or expected.
What Bungie announced about unvaulting
| What | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Who | Studio head Poria Torkan and Josh Deane | The Game Post, Dot Esports |
| What returns | Vaulted campaigns, destinations and raids | Bungie, via The Game Post |
| Who can play it | "All Destiny 2 players" | Bungie, via The Game Post |
| Why it takes time | Destiny 2 "has changed too much since Beyond Light"; content needs lighting, encounter, combatant and system updates | The Game Post |
| When | No dates; more details "in the months ahead" | The Game Post |
| Why now | Bungie said the community response "made a real impact" | The Game Post |
Background: Monument of Triumph was meant to be the last planned content update. Dot Esports reported that it pushed Destiny 2 past 160,000 players on Steam, and that it still averaged about 18,000 peak daily concurrent players three months later.
Destiny Content Vault list: everything still vaulted
Destinypedia lists everything still in the Destiny Content Vault:
| Category | Vaulted content | Count (our math) |
|---|---|---|
| Campaigns | The Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind, Forsaken | 4 |
| Destinations | Echo Mesa (Io), New Pacific Arcology (Titan), Fields of Glass (Mercury), Hellas Basin (Mars), Tangled Shore (the Reef), Derelict Leviathan | 6 |

| Social spaces | The Farm, Tribute Hall, Hall of Champions, the H.E.L.M., the Eliksni Quarter and others | 6+ |
What Bungie's promise covers: campaigns, destinations and raids, which is 15 items in the table above. Bungie didn't say whether Seasons, seasonal activities or events will return. Destinypedia says their status "is still unknown."
Already unvaulted: Bungie has brought some pieces back before. Destinypedia's unvaulted list includes The Whisper and Zero Hour Exotic missions, Presage, Vox Obscura, Operation: Seraph's Shield, Starcrossed, the Sunless Cell strike and Savathûn's Spire.
Example: a returning player who never finished Forsaken asks whether to wait. The Forsaken campaign and the Tangled Shore are both on the vaulted list and both inside Bungie's promise, but nothing says they come first. The Dreaming City, which Forsaken added, is still live, so its raid and activities are playable today.
When is the Destiny 2 unvaulting update?
- Timing: Deane first aimed to share the plan before the end of October, and on October 19 wrote on X that he was "looking at next week to queue up the update" (Insider Gaming). No date has been confirmed, and nothing had been published by October 28, 2026.
- Format: not a traditional roadmap. Deane said he'll describe the work "through the lens of a progress bar," showing milestones, challenges and "tangible evidence of the work being done" (Insider Gaming).
- What it won't settle yet: Bungie hasn't named the first campaign, destination or raid to return, or said whether Seasons are part of the plan.
- Where to watch: Bungie.net news, the Destiny 2 Team social accounts, and Bungie Help's server status page for any update downtime (SenseOS).
What you can play in Destiny 2 right now
Bungie Help's support guide lists what stays in the game after Update 9.7.0:
| Type | Available |
|---|---|
| Expansions and packs | Forsaken Pack, Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, 30th Anniversary, The Witch Queen, Lightfall, The Final Shape, Year of Prophecy, The Edge of Fate, Renegades, Destiny 2: The Collection |
| Destinations | The Tower, EDZ, Nessus, the Dreaming City, the Moon, Europa, Cosmodrome, Eternity, Savathûn's Throne World, Neptune, the Pale Heart, Kepler, the Lawless Frontier |
| Activities | Pantheon, Sparrow Racing League, Vanguard, Fireteam, Arena, Pinnacle, Solo and Crucible Ops, Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris, all raids and dungeons you own |
Access rules (Bungie Help):
- Raids and dungeons need the matching expansion or Dungeon Key. All Dungeon Keys come with Destiny 2: The Collection or can be bought in Eververse. Our Dungeon Keys guide explains which key opens what.
- Trials of Osiris runs every weekend except Iron Banner weekends. It needs SMS verification plus The Edge of Fate, Renegades or The Collection. Our Destiny 2 power level guide covers the climb to 550 for Trials and endgame activities.
- Iron Banner runs every four weeks.
- Monument of Triumph itself is permanent. Triumphs earn Legendary Marks for free ornaments, accessories and weapon engrams.
Retired events: Guardian Games, Solstice, Festival of the Lost and the Dawning. Some of their rewards moved to the Monument of Guardian Tenets (Bungie Help).
Monument of Triumph systems to use while you wait
Update 9.7.0 also changed how you earn cosmetics and old rewards. These systems stay in the game indefinitely (Bungie Help):
| System | What it does | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Monument of Triumph | Triumphs across the game award Legendary Marks | Spend Marks on free armor ornaments, accessories and weapon engrams at the Guardian Tenet vendors |
| Triumphant Rewards Pass | A final Rewards Pass with no end date | All Bright Dust rewards are on the Free Track; it adds XP Boosts of up to +15% Personal and Fireteam XP |
| Monument to Seasons Past | Sells Archived Passes from earlier Seasons for Silver | Unlock their rewards with Chronologs, now earned mainly through the Seasonal Hub |
| Bright Engram Focusing | Spend 300, 600 or 900 Bright Dust to focus an Eververse Engram | Focused Engrams give only unowned items and never duplicates |
| Legacy Engram exchange | Swap Season 1–11 engrams one-for-one | The option appears only if the engram is in your inventory |
Tips:
- Focus where it counts. Focused Engrams deplete as you collect their contents. Once one is empty, you can't buy it again (Bungie Help). Focus the categories you care about first.
- Mind your Chronologs. Zavala's weekly Arsenal Credit buyback now pays Chronologs instead of Bright Dust (Bungie Help). Save them for Archived Passes from Seasons you missed.
- Catch up through Triumphs. If restored campaigns and raids add new Triumphs, Bungie hasn't said whether they'll count toward Monument of Triumph. Until it does, earn Marks from content that's live now.
- Location: the Monument to Seasons Past is in the Tower Courtyard, in front of Banshee-44 and next to the Monument to Lost Lights (Bungie Help).
Why Bungie vaulted Destiny 2 content
The Destiny Content Vault cycled content in and out of Destiny 2 starting with Beyond Light. Dot Esports notes that Bungie promised at the time that vaulted content would eventually return, but it never followed through. Destinypedia adds that from Season of Plunder onward, major expansions stopped being vaulted. Only seasonal and episodic content and outdated systems kept going into the vault.
Some gear from vaulted activities can still be earned through live sources such as tiered drops from older raids and dungeons. The Destiny 2 vaulted category on the hub covers that older content.
Bungie Help says all content in the game as of Update 9.5.6.3, plus everything added in 9.7.0, stays available after June 9, 2026. So the unvaulting work is about restoring older removals, not protecting what's live now.
Destiny 2 patches since Monument of Triumph
| Update | Date | Headline | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9.7.0 | June 9, 2026 | Monument of Triumph, Pantheon 2.0, Sparrow Racing League, tiered gear from older raids and dungeons | SenseOS, Bungie Help |
| 9.7.0.1 | June 16 | Set bonus and Pantheon fixes | SenseOS |
| 9.7.0.2 | June 23 | Crossbow and King's Fall set bonus changes, Truth reserves cut | SenseOS |
| 9.7.0.3 | July 7 | Consecrated Mind tether restored, Meltdown map back | SenseOS |
| 9.7.0.4 | July 28 | No patch notes published | SenseOS |
| 9.7.0.5 | October 7 | Back-end fix against cheaters spamming rewards and XP | SenseOS |
The gap between updates grew to 71 days before 9.7.0.5 (SenseOS). Bungie's support guide says it "may need to release a hotfix in the future for the health and stability of the game."
How to prepare for vaulted content returning
- Free up vault space. Update 9.7.0 raised the vault from 1,000 to 1,300 slots (SenseOS, citing This Week in Destiny).
- Learn the raid basics now. The Destiny 2 raid prep guide covers loadouts and expectations, and the raid roles and callouts guide helps you learn a job before the first pull. Leviathan and Scourge of the Past were built for six-player fireteams, so that groundwork carries over.
- Practice dungeons. Our dungeon preparation guide helps you decide between solo and fireteam runs while you wait.
- Check ownership. Bungie says restored content will be available to all players. It hasn't said whether any of it will need a purchase.
Unvaulting for alts and returning players
- Returning players: everything listed under "Play what's available now" is live. Monument of Triumph's Triumphs are a good catch-up goal.
- New players: the Red War campaign isn't playable yet. Start with what's in the Director, and watch for the first restored campaign.
- Alts: Legendary Marks and Triumphs are account-wide goals. Use alts for weekly Ops and Iron Banner.
- Collectors: retired event rewards are partly in the Monument of Guardian Tenets and partly in Eververse for Bright Dust (Bungie Help).
- Account safety: if you plan to share an account or buy help when old raids return, read our Destiny 2 account risk guide first.
