Dota 2 Beginner Guide: Last Hits, Lane Decisions and Your First Role
Learn Dota 2 through a focused lane routine, clearer role choices and useful replay review instead of memorizing every hero.

In this guide 5 sections
Dota 2 becomes easier to learn when you reduce the number of decisions you are practicing at once. Choose a small hero pool and one role, then work on lane fundamentals before trying to understand every possible draft.
Valve provides learning and practice tools, including guided bot play, rather than requiring a new player to start with competitive matches. Use those tools to learn controls without also carrying the pressure of an unfamiliar team. Valve's learning overview
Practice last hits with a purpose
Focus on the timing of your hero's attack and the health of the target. Do not judge practice only by a final total. Notice which misses came from attacking too early, being out of range or moving at the wrong moment.
Repeat the exercise with the same hero and starting setup. Changing several variables makes it harder to see whether your timing improved.
Understand what your lane partner needs
Before the match begins, agree on who is taking farm and what each player can do to make the lane safer. A support and a farming core can both play actively, but they should not compete for the same resources without a plan.
When opponents disappear, communicate the missing information. Do not assume they have left permanently just because you can no longer see them.
Make item choices explainable
An in-game build is a useful starting structure. Read each recommended item's effect and ask when you expect to use it. Buying an active item without practicing its button is an unfinished upgrade.
Keep the next purchase tied to a problem: reaching a target, surviving an initiation or sustaining your lane. Avoid replacing the whole build after one death.
Review one moment after each game
Pick a death or failed team fight and rewind far enough to see the decision before it. Was the area visible? Were allies close enough? Did you have a safer route?
Write one sentence about what you would change. A specific observation is more useful than deciding that the entire match was unwinnable.
When should you move on from practice?
Try ordinary matches when you can control your hero, use basic items and explain your lane role. Keep checking the official Dota 2 site for updates; hero and item balance changes make permanent beginner tier lists unreliable.
