THE GUIDE

The Elder Scrolls Online offers many possible directions early on. A useful first-character plan is to choose a story to follow, learn your combat tools and avoid filling your journal with objectives you cannot identify.

Decide what you want from the character

ESO's official getting-started guide explains that race and alliance are separate choices with different implications. Read the creation-screen descriptions before confirming. If your priority is playing with friends, agree on the activities you want to share before choosing around a build video.

For a first character, focus on a playstyle you want to practise. A complicated endgame recommendation is not helpful if you do not yet understand why its skills belong together.

Give your journal a main thread

Pick one quest line as your current project. Before accepting another distant invitation, read its location and purpose. Keep a short note of which story you are following and what the next objective requires.

This does not mean avoiding exploration. It means making exploration a choice rather than losing track of your original goal every time a new quest marker appears.

Learn what each ability contributes

After unlocking a skill, test it in an ordinary fight. Identify whether it provides damage, protection, recovery or control. Build a small set of abilities whose purposes you can explain instead of replacing everything whenever a new icon becomes available.

When a fight goes badly, ask which problem you could not solve. Running out of resources and standing in a dangerous attack require different changes.

Use exploration as a learning loop

Choose a nearby area, complete a manageable objective and return to organise your inventory. Read unfamiliar item descriptions before selling or destroying them. Save questions about confusing systems and look them up through the in-game Help menu or the official beginner guides.

Avoid treating every activity as something you must complete immediately. A clear next step makes returning to the game much easier.

What should you do in your first session?

  • Choose a character concept you want to play.
  • Identify one quest line to follow.
  • Learn the purpose of the abilities you equip.
  • Finish a small objective and record the next step before logging out.

Do you need an endgame build immediately?

No. Begin by understanding the skills and activities available to your character. When you later adopt a specialised build, compare its requirements with what you have actually unlocked.
