THE GUIDE

Quick summary

  • Unlock: Beastmaster (BST) arrived in patch 7.56 as FFXIV's second limited job. You need a level 50 Disciple of War or Magic, the main scenario quest "The Ultimate Weapon" done, and Dawntrail registered. Then pick up "Strangers in the Wood" from the Excited Adventurer in New Gridania (X:11.8, Y:13.6), per the Console Games Wiki.
  • Leveling: the job runs from level 1 to 50. Run FATEs until 15, where BST gets a bonus to FATE EXP. From 15 to 50, dungeons are fastest. Capturing beasts gives almost no EXP (Icy Veins).
  • Capturing: you build a roster of up to 50 familiars with Gauge and Capture. Weaken the target first, and remember that it must be your level or lower. Kornago gourds skip the fight entirely.
  • Crucible of the Unbroken: this is the endgame. It's a solo, roguelite-style set of five boards that unlocks at level 30. Every board has its own level, item level and beast-rank sync. Beasts cap at rank 25.
  • Rankings: Square Enix has postponed the start of Crucible Rankings Season 1. It hasn't announced a new date yet, and ranking scores stay unavailable in game until it does.

Know what a limited job can and can't do

Beastmaster works like Blue Mage: it's a limited job with its own rules. The 7.56 notes describe it as a melee DPS job that shares gear with Monk and Samurai. It has no matching class, and it levels from 1 to 50. According to the Console Games Wiki, it fights with a one-handed axe and a shield and uses Strength as its main stat.

Rule What it means for you Source
No role actions No Second Wind, Bloodbath or Arm's Length. Your survival tools come from the job itself. Patch 7.56 notes
Bigger FATE EXP FATEs are your best early EXP Patch 7.56 notes
No open-world kill bonus Blue Mage's habit of farming level-capped mobs doesn't work here Patch 7.56 notes; Icy Veins
Preformed or unrestricted parties only Use Party Finder, not the Duty Finder roulettes Patch 7.56 notes

Unlock Beastmaster in five steps

Step Where Requirement
1. Reach level 50 on any Disciple of War or Magic job Anywhere Level 50 DoW/DoM
2. Finish the main scenario through "The Ultimate Weapon" A Realm Reborn MSQ MSQ progress
3. Register Dawntrail on the account Mog Station Expansion ownership
4. Accept "Strangers in the Wood" Excited Adventurer, New Gridania (X:11.8, Y:13.6) Steps 1–3
5. Meet the Kornago in the Central Shroud Near the Bentbranch aetheryte (X:21.9, Y:22.8) Quest chain

The 7.56 notes list job quests at Beastmaster levels 1, 8, 18, 30, 40 and 50. The 30, 40 and 50 quests have a second step that also requires clearing "a certain board" in the Crucible. According to the Console Games Wiki, the quests teach the job and give you Beastmaster gear, but they don't unlock new actions the way most job quests do. They appear at the levels where your rotation gains new actions, not every five levels.

Level from 1 to 50 the fastest way

Icy Veins' leveling guide (Dawntrail 7.56, updated September 9, 2026) recommends a two-stage route, and the 7.56 notes back up why. FATEs are boosted for this job, and nothing else is.

Level range Activity Why Source
1–15 FATEs in low-level zones BST gets more FATE EXP. You can't queue for dungeons yet, and other players around a FATE keep a fragile job alive. Patch 7.56 notes; Icy Veins
15–50 Party Finder dungeons, synced: Copperbell Mines, then Halatali, then Toto-Rak, then the next one you unlock Icy Veins puts it at about 2–3 levels per run (community estimate), and you can capture along the way Icy Veins
30+ Crucible boards in between dungeon runs Clearing boards gives Beastmaster EXP and is required for the job quests Console Games Wiki; Patch 7.56 notes

Before you start, Icy Veins suggests equipping any pre-order or promotional EXP earrings, rings and hats. It also suggests using battle and rationing manuals and turning on your Free Company EXP buffs. The September 17 hotfix fixed an issue where the New/Preferred World EXP bonus wasn't applied to Beastmaster, so on a new or preferred World you now get that bonus too.

Compare the leveling methods

Method EXP pace Captures on the way Party needed Best use
FATEs Good early, thanks to the job's bonus Some (FATE enemies are valid targets) No Levels 1–15, or whenever Party Finder is empty
Synced dungeons Fastest (2–3 levels per run, Icy Veins) Yes, dungeon beasts Yes, preformed 15–50
Open-world kills Normal rates, no bonus Yes No Only when you're hunting a specific capture
Crucible boards Moderate, and it levels your familiars No No (solo) 30+, alongside the job quests
Unsynced runs with a high-level friend Little leveling Fast captures Yes Shopping for beasts, not leveling

Icy Veins doesn't publish a timed EXP-per-hour test, and we haven't run one, so this table doesn't give hourly figures.

Capture beasts with Gauge and Capture

According to the 7.56 notes, you learn Gauge and Capture at level 1. Gauge tells you whether a beast can be tamed and how hard that will be. Capture marks the target with Interest Captured. If you defeat it while the mark is on, you may form a pact. Weakening the target first raises your chance, but the notes say attempts can still fail.

Capture rule Detail Source
Level check The beast must be at or below your level. The bigger your level lead, the better your odds. Console Games Wiki
HP check The lower the target's HP when you use Capture, the better your chance Console Games Wiki; Patch 7.56 notes
Overkill trick If you're so far above the target that you'd one-shot it, use Capture to open: it takes the target to very low HP without killing it. Use Capture again, then finish it. Console Games Wiki (community)
Parties Every Beastmaster in the party can capture the same target. Each player rolls separately, and overlapping marks have no extra effect. Console Games Wiki
Unsynced level 50 duties An all-Beastmaster party can run unsynced and gets 30% Echo Console Games Wiki
Helpers High-level friends should hold back damage so you can Capture at low HP. Taking gear off is one way to do it. Console Games Wiki
FATE versions FATE spawns count and are often lower level than the overworld version Icy Veins

Captured beasts go into the Master's Bestiary (Main Menu > Character). It shows each beast's actions and habitat and lets you change its size. The size change only shows on your screen. Assign beasts to First, Second and Third Battlehorn. Only one familiar can be out at a time, so the three battlehorns are the beasts you swap between in a fight.

Kornago gourds form a pact with no fight at all. You buy them with remnants of resilience from the Kornago merchant in the Central Shroud (X:21.9, Y:22.6), and more kinds become available as you complete job quests (Patch 7.56 notes). Use them for beasts from high-level duties when you don't want to put a party together.

Learn the TP rotation and the kinships

The 7.56 notes say Beastmasters and familiars both build TP, and that instinctual skills open up at 100 TP. Chaining instinctual skills completes combos that deal extra damage. The Console Games Wiki shows two bars, each capped at 250: regular TP (yellow) from your three-hit combo, Borrow and Rally, and familiar TP (blue) from familiar auto-attacks, Parting Blow and Rallying Cheer.

Mechanic What to do Source
Instinctual Hearts Each instinctual skill grants a Heart (Volant, Rampant, Durant or Eldritch). Use a skill whose Heart pairs with the one you have to complete a combo. Example: a Durant skill while Rampant Heart is up completes a Moonstalker combo. Console Games Wiki (tooltips)
250 TP at level 50 Instinctual actions turn into stronger white or black abilities that grant Sunstrider or Moonstalker. Having both up triggers the infinitive combo. Console Games Wiki
Tempered Release Your familiar uses its own unique attack Patch 7.56 notes
Borrow Gives you a Kinship based on your familiar's type (Beastkin, Vilekin, Cloudkin, Seedkin, Wavekin, Scalekin, Soulkin or Ashkin) Console Games Wiki
Rallying Cheer (level 40) Spends up to 3 stacks of Natural Instinct for 30 familiar TP, plus 70 per stack Console Games Wiki

Treat the potency figures in the wiki's tooltips as values from patch 7.56. Square Enix's rankings notice says it is still reviewing Beastmaster's combat balance.

Clear the five Crucible of the Unbroken boards

You enter the Crucible through Lauda in the Central Shroud (X:21.9, Y:22.8) after finishing the level 30 unlock quest. According to the 7.56 notes, each board is a map of spaces, and you clear it by beating the final boss on the innermost space. Your HP and your familiars' HP don't regenerate. If a familiar hits 0 HP it's out, and if you hit 0 HP the duty fails.

Board Sync (Icy Veins) Minimum average item level (Sep 17 hotfix) Notes (Icy Veins, community)
First Board of the Unbroken Level 30, beast rank 5 25+ The hardest board relative to the tools you have when you first get there
Second Board of the Unbroken Level 40, beast rank 10 35+ You'll need to juggle damage with the duty actions more
Third Board of the Unbroken Level 50, item level 100, beast rank 15 82+ An untrained roster starts to show
First Master's Board Level 50, item level 120, beast rank 20 82+ May require farming gear upgrades
Second Master's Board Level 50, item level 135, beast rank 25 82+ Needs many gear upgrades

Use the board tools

Tool Rule Source
Snarl Your familiar takes enmity through Cover (15s, removes Enmity Up per the hotfix help text) Patch 7.56 notes; Sep 17 hotfix
Challenge You pull enmity and remove Cover from your familiar Patch 7.56 notes
Crucible items One provided at the start of each board, carry up to 10, usable on the board or in combat Patch 7.56 notes
Beast gear Passive bonuses while carried; one at the start, up to 10, no duplicates Patch 7.56 notes
Ephemeral items Only last for the current board Patch 7.56 notes
Feed Buffs familiars. They won't eat duplicates, and resting at a campsite removes the feed effects. Patch 7.56 notes
Suspend / forfeit You can save between spaces and resume later. Starting a new run deletes the suspended one. Forfeiting still scores your progress. Patch 7.56 notes

Icy Veins calls each board "a knowledge check far more than a damage check." Before every fight you can click each enemy and check its weaknesses, then build a team to cover the damage types and elements the board needs. Bring something with an interrupt. The board panel shows which casts can be interrupted.

Pick a leveling run or a scoring run

Your score is based on the spaces you cross, the HP you have left and optional bonuses (Patch 7.56 notes). The score decides your remnant payout and how much EXP your familiars get. Every 100 familiar EXP adds one beast rank, up to a maximum of 25. Ranks raise Strength, Intelligence, Physical and Magic Resistance and Constitution.

Goal Roster Feed Board choice Source
Leveling familiars Full roster (every beast you bring gets EXP) EXP feeds The highest board that doesn't sync your beasts down and that you can clear quickly Icy Veins
Scoring and remnants Three beasts (counts toward the 1–3 roster bonus) None (no-feed and no-campsite bonuses) Your best board, at the highest degree you can clear Icy Veins; Patch 7.56 notes
Achievements One kin type (Kin Gambit) Whatever you need to clear The board the achievement names Icy Veins; Console Games Wiki

Icy Veins says that once a beast's rank is above a board's sync, its EXP drops off more and more the further above the sync it gets. Being under the sync doesn't give extra EXP either. Move to the next board as your roster outgrows each sync.

Unlock degrees and climb the rankings

According to the 7.56 notes, Degrees unlock once you've finished every board and advanced the job quests. First to third degree raise enemy HP and damage and pay bigger score bonuses. Rankings are per physical data center and need third degree with "Participate in rankings" checked. Your ranking score uses the last three attempts on each board. The notes say the top 300 per data center get rewards by moogle delivery. Clearing all five boards at third degree is the requirement in the achievement list (Console Games Wiki).

Gear up between boards

The level 50 Beastmaster set can be upgraded and gives stat bonuses inside the Crucible, with defense close to tank gear (Console Games Wiki). Upgrades cost faded and bright remnants of resilience, traded with the Kornago merchant (Patch 7.56 notes). Under level 50, many accessories have no job restriction. The wiki names the Dreadwyrm Choker of Fending as the best necklace for its secondary stats (community pick). Icy Veins says the Master's Boards' item level syncs (120 and 135) are where you'll need to farm upgrades.

Come back on an alt or as a returning player

  • Alts: every character needs its own level 50 DoW/DoM, "The Ultimate Weapon" done and Dawntrail registered before "Strangers in the Wood" shows up (Console Games Wiki).
  • Returning players: if you leveled Beastmaster in early 7.56, recheck your board access. Item level gates were added on September 17. That hotfix also fixed the bug where Geshunpest in the Central Shroud gave no EXP.
  • Score chasers: exploits fixed in the hotfix (the Deadly Demesne barrier bypass, attacks negated by Cover from Parting Blow or Final Sting) are gone. Practice your routes without them.
  • Normal leveling: Beastmaster doesn't help your other combat jobs. For those, see our FFXIV leveling guide and the Final Fantasy XIV hub.

FAQ

How do I unlock Beastmaster in FFXIV? Get a Disciple of War or Magic job to level 50, finish "The Ultimate Weapon" and register Dawntrail. Then take "Strangers in the Wood" from the Excited Adventurer in New Gridania (X:11.8, Y:13.6), per the Console Games Wiki.

What is the fastest way to level Beastmaster to 50? Do FATEs until level 15, since Beastmaster gets bonus FATE EXP. Then run synced dungeons through Party Finder. Icy Veins estimates 2–3 levels per run (community figure). Don't count on capture EXP.

Can Beastmaster use the Duty Finder? Not for roulettes. Per the 7.56 notes, Beastmaster can join preformed or unrestricted parties. Roulettes, Deep Dungeons, field operations, Variant and Criterion dungeons, Ultimates and PvP are all locked.

Why did my Capture fail? Capture can fail. The beast has to be at or below your level, and your chance goes up the more you lead it in level and the lower its HP is when you use Capture. If a beast is too high level, try a FATE version of it or a Kornago gourd.

How many beasts can I capture? The Console Games Wiki counts 50 beasts in the Master's Bestiary. You can assign three to battlehorns and have one out at a time.

What beast rank do I need for each Crucible board? Icy Veins lists the syncs as rank 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 across the five boards. The September 17 hotfix also added average item level minimums of 25, 35 and 82.

Have Crucible Rankings started? No. Square Enix postponed Season 1 and says it will announce a start date. Ranking scores stay unavailable in game until then.
