Genshin Impact Beginner Guide: Build a Team Around Elemental Reactions

Understand elemental team roles in Genshin Impact and practise a simple rotation before investing in an expensive build or chasing a tier list.

THE GUIDE

A strong first Genshin Impact team starts with a repeatable interaction, not four characters chosen separately from a tier list. Decide which character will spend most of the time attacking, then give the other slots jobs that support that plan.

Start with one reaction to understand

Elemental reactions depend on how elements meet. HoYoWiki documents reactions such as Swirl and Superconduct, and the in-game tutorials explain their effects. Read the reaction you want to use before deciding which stats or characters support it. Different reactions do not all reward the same build choices. HoYoWiki reaction reference and Superconduct reference.

For practice, select a familiar enemy and trigger the same interaction several times. Notice which character applies the first element and which follows. If your expected reaction does not appear, check the order and timing before assuming that you need a rarer character.

Give every team slot a purpose

Write a short job beside each character: on-field attacker, elemental application, defensive support or another effect your plan needs. A character can fill more than one role, but an unexplained slot is a good place to review. Your available roster matters more than a showcase built around characters you do not own.

Next, practise a short rotation. Apply the setup effects, switch to the character that uses them and stop when those effects are no longer active. Repeat the sequence until you can perform it without searching for the next button. Longer rotations can come later.

Invest in a problem you can identify

Before spending materials, name the problem: a useful ability is unavailable, your main attacker needs improvement or the team cannot survive comfortably. Read the relevant character's talent descriptions and upgrade requirements. This connects spending to an actual need rather than to an abstract build score.

Avoid spreading every resource across a large roster during one session. Develop the team you are actively testing, then decide which additional character would solve its remaining weakness.

Test consistency, not one huge number

Try the same encounter several times. Compare how comfortably your team repeats its sequence and how often you must interrupt it to recover. A reliable rotation that suits your account is a better learning target than reproducing a single damage screenshot with very different equipment.
