Guild Wars 2 Beginner Guide: Professions, Weapon Skills and Dodging
Choose a Guild Wars 2 profession, understand your skill bar and learn active defense while exploring Tyria.

In this guide 5 sections
Guild Wars 2 becomes more approachable when you learn what your skill bar is asking you to do. Choose a profession that interests you, then practice its weapons and defensive tools before worrying about an endgame build.
ArenaNet's new-player guide separates weapon, healing, utility and profession skills. It also explains reading enemy information and using movement or dodges to avoid attacks. Official new-player guide
Read the weapon skills as a set
When trying a weapon, inspect every skill and identify its purpose. Which action is your dependable attack? Which controls an enemy, changes your position or gives you a safer opening?
Practice the skills together against familiar enemies. Pressing everything as soon as it becomes available can hide the moment when a particular tool would have been most useful.
Learn defense before adding complexity
Watch the enemy's animation and the area around your character. Move out of an attack when possible and save a dodge for a situation where ordinary movement will not be enough.
The official guide explains that dodging consumes endurance. Spending it without a reason can leave you without an answer to the next attack.
Keep your healing skill accessible and learn what it does beyond restoring health. A comfortable key binding matters more than copying another player's entire layout.
Explore with a profession question
Use early exploration to test one part of the kit: fighting multiple enemies, handling a ranged opponent or maintaining damage while moving. This gives open-world play a purpose without turning it into a rigid checklist.
When you unlock a new option, compare it with your existing setup. Replace something because it solves a problem, not simply because it is new.
Prepare for group content deliberately
Read the requirements for the activity and tell the group if you are learning. Bring a setup whose important buttons you understand.
Do not assume a build designed for one mode is equally useful in another. Open-world exploration, organized encounters and competitive modes create different demands.
What should a new player prioritize?
Aim to recognize your main attacks, healing tool and defensive options without staring at the bar. Once those habits feel natural, learning a more specialized build becomes much easier.
