THE GUIDE

Winning your first Marvel Rivals matches starts with arriving at the objective together. Before worrying about a tier list, learn what your hero can do, where your teammates can support you and when a fight is already lost.

Choose a role you can explain

The roster includes Vanguards, Duelists and Strategists. Pick one hero to practise and a second option that helps you understand a different role. Read their abilities in the official roster, then try each button in practice rather than discovering its range during a close match.

For your first session, give yourself one job: create a safe approach, pressure an exposed target, or keep a teammate alive. If you cannot describe how your chosen hero performs that job, spend another few minutes in practice.

Treat cover as part of your kit

Before crossing an open lane, identify your next piece of cover. An escape ability is less useful after you have already spent it entering the fight. Keep a route back to the team and avoid chasing a low-health enemy beyond the space your team controls.

A useful review question after a death is: could a teammate have helped from where they were standing? If the answer is no, change your route before blaming your aim.

Check Team-Ups before the match

Team-Up combinations and effects can change. Check the current official Team-Up page rather than memorising an old pairing from a video. A bonus ability is useful only if both players understand how to use it.

Do not choose an unfamiliar hero solely to activate a pairing. Test the interaction first, including who receives the effect and whether it requires an active input.

A three-match practice plan

  1. In the first match, focus on staying within a useful distance of the team.
  2. In the second, name your escape route before every engagement.
  3. In the third, save an important ability for a specific threat instead of using it immediately.

After each match, note one avoidable death and one fight where your ability changed the outcome. This produces a more useful improvement target than damage totals alone.

Should beginners switch heroes frequently?

Try different heroes in practice, but keep your match pool small while learning maps. Switch when you understand the problem you are trying to solve, such as reaching a distant target or helping a pressured teammate.
