RuneScape Beginner Guide: Quests, Skills and Your First Goals
Start RuneScape with manageable quest and skill goals, and learn how to organize upgrades without confusing it with Old School RuneScape.

In this guide 4 sections
RuneScape does not require a beginner to solve every skill and combat system immediately. Choose a small objective with a visible result, then use its requirements to decide what to learn next.
Confirm which RuneScape you are playing
Jagex's version comparison explains that RuneScape and Old School RuneScape have separate character progress. Items, stats and character information do not transfer between them.
That distinction matters when searching for help. Include the correct game name with a quest or training question. A familiar location does not mean a route or reward works identically in both versions.
Let a quest create the plan
Open a quest you want to complete and review its requirements. Break them into steps you can finish in one session. If you need a skill level or an item, decide whether to gather it, craft it or explore another available route.
Our recommendation is to keep one main objective and one optional activity. This gives you something to switch to without turning the whole session into unrelated tasks.
The official game-information hub provides orientation to the world and its systems. Use current in-game descriptions for the exact requirements of your next action.
Upgrade around a specific obstacle
If combat is stopping you, identify whether the issue is equipment, ability use, recovery or understanding the encounter. If a skill goal feels slow, inspect the activity and its requirements before buying a large supply of materials.
Avoid comparing yourself with an experienced player's complete setup. Their method may depend on unlocks you have not obtained, which can make the same activity inefficient on a new character.
Keep your first routine manageable
At the end of a session, sort items related to the next goal and note the next step. Returning to a clear task is more useful than facing a crowded inventory with no remembered purpose.
Experiment with a few activities before making an extensive training plan. The best starting route is one you understand and want to repeat. Once you can explain why each step helps, you can evaluate more advanced efficiency advice without following it blindly.
