THE GUIDE

Choosing your first Star Wars: The Old Republic character is easier when you separate the story you want to experience from the way you want to fight. Those are connected decisions, but they are not identical.

Choose the story before the ranking

The official Combat Styles explanation describes the separation between Origin Story and Combat Style. The story establishes your character's narrative path, while the style determines combat gameplay, subject to the game's eligibility restrictions.

Start with the kind of Star Wars adventure that interests you. Then inspect the styles available to that choice in the current character-creation screen. Do not assume every combination is available to every new account.

Learn your abilities in small groups

Organize the actions you use frequently so that movement and targeting remain comfortable. Read what each new ability contributes before placing it into a sequence.

Our recommendation is to identify an ordinary attack plan, a response to danger and a way to handle multiple enemies. Practice those roles rather than memorizing a long endgame rotation immediately.

Keep mission progress readable

Choose a main mission and follow its destination carefully. Side activities can be worthwhile, but adding many at once makes it harder to remember why you are traveling.

Use the map and mission descriptions when returning after a break. Before searching for a walkthrough, write down the exact mission name and the step you have reached. This avoids spoilers and advice for another character's storyline.

Prepare for group content

When trying a group activity for the first time, tell the group you are learning and clarify your expected role. Check whether your chosen combat setup supports that role, rather than assuming the story archetype automatically determines it.

The official tutorial hub contains useful introductions to navigation and group systems, but some older class videos reflect earlier game versions. Use the current Combat Styles screen and recent official updates for exact selection rules.

Your first character does not need a perfect long-term build. A story you enjoy and a combat plan you understand provide a stronger foundation for exploring more demanding content later.
