World of Tanks Beginner Guide: Positioning and Survival
Learn World of Tanks through Bootcamp, deliberate positioning and post-battle reviews that explain why your tank survived or was exposed.

In this guide 4 sections
A new World of Tanks player should learn to arrive at a useful position with a way to leave it. A strong vehicle does not repair a route that exposes its sides or leaves it isolated from support.
Complete Bootcamp with a question in mind
Wargaming's official getting-started guide explains Bootcamp and the Garage, where you inspect vehicles, research upgrades and prepare for battles.
Use the training to understand the controls that interrupt your play. Practice aiming, movement and changing attention between the target and the map. If a tutorial step feels unclear, repeat it before adding the pressure of a competitive battle.
Read the vehicle before choosing the route
Inspect the characteristics and equipment of the tank you are using. Ask what range and terrain suit its strengths, and what happens if you are forced to retreat.
Our recommended habit is to choose both a fighting position and the route back before advancing. If the position has only one exposed exit, consider whether you will have support when you need it.
Stay aware between shots
While waiting for the next action, check the map and nearby teammates. Notice when a flank loses support or an opponent changes position. A useful shot now can become a poor decision if it prevents you from responding to a developing threat.
Avoid following an isolated enemy simply because you can damage it. Compare the pursuit with the importance of the area you would leave undefended.
Upgrade with a purpose
Read what a module changes before buying it. Connect the purchase to a problem you have observed, such as handling or the ability to perform the tank's intended role.
The official newcomer guide covers shooting, survival, economy and vehicle improvement. Use the relevant section rather than assuming a higher tier alone resolves a learning problem.
After a battle, review where you first became exposed without a useful response. That moment often provides a clearer lesson than the final shot that destroyed the tank.
Your first goal is a repeatable decision process: inspect the vehicle, choose supported ground, watch the map and preserve an exit.
