PoE2 Endgame Guide 0.5.5: Atlas Points, Fortress and Masters
PoE2 endgame guide for 0.5.5: how the Atlas works, the Fortress route to Arbiter of Divinity, Atlas points, Masters, tablets, hubs and map deaths.

In this guide 15 sections
Quick summary
- The loop: put a Waystone in the map device, run a map next to one you've cleared, and keep a supply of Waystones as you push out across the Atlas (Grinding Gear Games).
- Atlas points come only from the Precursor Fortress. It rises after you complete your first Tower, and maps inside it grant the points. This "entirely replaces" the old method (GGG 0.5.0 notes).
- The 0.5.5 shortcut: killing the non-quest Arbiter of Divinity now completes the whole Fortress for the map owner. The quest kill no longer completes any section (GGG 0.5.5 notes).
- The Atlas tree can be fully allocated. It has over 300 nodes and no respec; multi-choice nodes can be switched any time (GGG 0.5.0 notes).
- Masters of the Atlas: Doryani, Hilda and Jado each have 12 nodes, and you can pick 4 of each at once, swapping between maps (GGG 0.5.0 notes).
This PoE2 endgame guide explains how the Atlas works on patch 0.5.5 (Forbidden Rites, released September 2, 2026) and the order to unlock it in. Mechanics come from Grinding Gear Games' 0.5.0 Return of the Ancients notes and 0.5.5 notes, mirrored on ExileData; route details and point counts come from community guides and the PoE2 Wiki, named where used.
How the PoE2 endgame Atlas works
| Element | What it does | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ziggurat Refuge | Your starting hub in the middle of the Atlas | GGG |
| Waystones | Open a map; the tier sets monster level. They must be identified before use | GGG 0.5.0 |
| Towers | Reveal nearby nodes; take Precursor Tablets | GGG |
| Corrupted Nexus | Corruption boss; clearing one starts Doryani's questline | GGG 0.5.0 |
| Fixed points of interest | Set locations with clear objectives | GGG 0.5.0 |
| Ancient Modifiers | 40+ map modifiers outside the Fortress that add content | GGG 0.5.0 |
If you fail a map, that route can become unavailable, so you'll need to find another way around. Run a stricter loot filter as you move up Waystone tiers so the screen stays readable; the PoE2 loot filter guide covers when to raise strictness.
Waystone mods: in 0.5.0, GGG moved modifiers so prefixes generally affect monster damage toward you and suffixes affect your defenses or the monsters'. Waystone bonuses now raise Monster Effectiveness, Pack Size, Item Rarity, Monster Rarity or Waystone Drop Chance, and multiply with Atlas tree bonuses.
Precursor Fortress route to Arbiter of Divinity
This is the order PoE Source and Stratlore give, checked against GGG's notes:
- Complete your first Precursor Tower. The Fortress rises from the ground (GGG 0.5.0).
- Enter through the Ancient Gateway. Three Gateway maps with two new bosses open different sections (GGG 0.5.0, PoE Source).
- Clear the Eastern and Western Enigma Chambers for the quest versions of the three Crisis Fragments: Ancient, Faded and Weathered (PoE Source).
- Beat the Arbiter of Ash at the Burning Monolith. In 0.5.5 he has Fire Resistance and Cold Vulnerability instead of all elemental resistances (GGG 0.5.5).
- Clear the Matriarch Halls and Patriarch Halls with Tier 15 Waystones. Phya, Sentinel of the Cradle drops the Origin Cradle and Phyx, Sentinel of the Spark drops the Origin Spark (PoE Source; boss name from GGG 0.5.5).
- Combine them into an Origin Core at the Precursor Reactor and place it at the top of the Origin Tower.
- Fight the quest Arbiter of Divinity. He now has Lightning Resistance and Fire Vulnerability (GGG 0.5.5).
- Repeat the Halls for a non-quest Origin Core and kill the Arbiter again. In 0.5.5, this kill completes the entire Fortress for you (GGG 0.5.5, Mobalytics).
Prep: Stratlore advises capping your resistances at 75% and bringing Runic Ward before either pinnacle fight.
Quest vs non-quest Arbiter of Divinity kills
| Kill | 0.5.0 behavior | 0.5.5 behavior (GGG) |
|---|---|---|
| Quest Arbiter of Divinity | Completed a section of the Fortress | No longer completes any section |
| Non-quest Arbiter of Divinity | One of 5 kills needed to finish every section | One kill completes the entire Fortress |
If your Fortress didn't unlock after the story fight, you've only done the quest kill. Build a non-quest Origin Core and kill him once more. Mobalytics' progression guide flags the same step: your second Arbiter clear is the one that unlocks the Atlas.
How to get and spend Atlas points in PoE2
| Source | Points (community figures) |
|---|---|
| Standard Fortress map | 1 point (PoE Source) |
| Precursor Tower | 4 points (PoE Source) |
| Special Fortress maps | Extra points (PoE2 Wiki) |
| Non-quest Arbiter of Divinity (0.5.5) | The rest of the Fortress (GGG) |
| Total available | 311 (Stratlore, 0.5.4) |
Spend in this order (Mobalytics): Waystone sustain and reliable map completion first, then monster and rarity value, then mechanic interactions. Since you'll eventually allocate everything, early choices only affect how fast you progress.
Map-level gating: nodes higher up the tree only work in maps of a minimum level, and some sections unlock after specific areas or bosses (PoE2 Wiki). Some content now needs Atlas specialization, including Exceptional Items, Fracturing Orbs and Basic and Overseer Precursor Tablets (GGG 0.5.0).
Mechanic trees are separate. Each league mechanic has its own tree, and its points come from completing that mechanic's encounters near its hub. Defeating a mechanic's pinnacle boss grants 6 points (PoE2 Wiki).
Masters of the Atlas: Doryani, Hilda and Jado
| Master | How to unlock (GGG 0.5.0) |
|---|---|
| Doryani's Science | Clear a Corrupted Nexus |
| Hilda's Hunting | Visit Hilda's Campsite, south-west of your start |
| Jado's Spycraft | Complete an anomaly map near your start |
You unlock each row of 3 nodes by doing that Master's missions. All three can be set up at once, with a quick-select button to switch before each map (GGG 0.5.0). In 0.5.5, Doryani's Refined Formula was replaced by Archaic Corruption, which makes monsters released from Essences corrupted (GGG 0.5.5).
PoE2 endgame mechanic hubs and pinnacle paths
| Mechanic | Hub (direction from start) | Pinnacle path (GGG 0.5.0) |
|---|---|---|
| Ritual | Caer Tarth (west) | King in the Mists → Head of the King → Rite of the Nameless (5 maps) |
| Delirium | The Withered Willow (south-west) | Grand Mirrors → Trial of Madness → Simulacrum (7 waves) → pinnacle key |
| Breach | Monastery of the Keepers (south) | Breachstone → Breach Domain → Tul and Esh → Xesht |
| Fate of the Vaal | Lira Vaal / Atziri's Temple (north-east) | Temple rooms toward Atziri |
| Expedition | Core mechanic since 0.5.5 | Logbooks → ocean islands; Expedition Tablets now drop |
| Abyss | Large Abyssal Ravines (0.5.5) | Ravine maps always contain Abysses |
Maps around each hub always contain that mechanic and grant points for its tree (GGG 0.5.0). For Ritual and the league's Sacred Bloom, see the PoE2 Forbidden Rites guide.
Waystone sustain as you climb tiers
Running out of Waystones is the main way early mapping stalls.
| Tool | Effect | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Waystone Drop Chance modifiers | Some Waystone mods now raise Waystone drop chance directly | GGG 0.5.0 |
| Atlas tree sustain nodes | Global Waystone bonuses; take these first | Mobalytics |
| Omen of Chaotic Effectiveness | Your next Chaos Orb rerolls a Waystone with no Monster Effectiveness mods | GGG 0.5.0 |
Rule of thumb: only run Waystone tiers your build can clear without dying. A failed map can close a route and costs the Waystone, which is worse than running a lower tier cleanly. Corrupted Nexus maps can now be retried if failed (GGG 0.5.5).
What happens when you die in a map
Deaths cost more in the endgame than in the campaign, so it pays to know the rules before you push tiers.
- Experience: in most endgame areas (area level 65 and up), a death costs 10% of the experience needed for your next level. It can't drop you a level, and deaths in pinnacle boss fights don't cost experience (PoE2 Wiki).
- Revives: each map gives a limited number of revives, and the count shrinks as you add Waystone modifiers. Running out fails the map.
- A failed map consumes the Waystone and any Precursor Tablet effects on it. Re-running the node needs a new Waystone, and the earlier tablet modifiers are gone (PoE2 Wiki).
Example: you're level 92 and each level is a long grind. Running T15 Waystones with fewer modifiers keeps more revives and protects your experience bar, while the same build on heavily modded T16s may lose more progress than the extra loot is worth.
Endgame Trials and your last Ascendancy points
Your final two Ascendancy points only come from an endgame version of an Ascension Trial (PoE2 Wiki). That means a level 75+ Djinn Barya for the Trial of the Sekhemas or a high-level Inscribed Ultimatum for the Trial of Chaos. In 0.5.5 the Trial of Chaos pays only Currency and Soul Cores, gives a reward chest in every room and lets you leave and resume (GGG 0.5.5). Do this early in mapping, because the last two points often matter more than any single Atlas node.
How to use Precursor Tablets
- Insert tablets into completed Towers to add that mechanic to maps in range.
- Stack the same type. Since 0.5.0, using several tablets of one type increases that content (GGG).
- Empty slots matter. Each empty slot adds random non-tablet league content, so filling every slot means you only see your chosen mechanics (GGG 0.5.0).
- Expedition tablets (0.5.5): 1 adds an Expedition, 2 add a Verisium Remnant and 35% density, 3 add another Expedition, and 4 add another Remnant and 35% more density (GGG 0.5.5).
- Ritual tablets: more than one adds an extra altar where possible (GGG 0.5.5).
PoE2 endgame checklist for your first week
Our suggested order, built from the sources above:
- Finish the campaign and Interludes. The PoE2 leveling guide covers the route.
- Clear maps toward the first Tower while building 10–20 spare Waystones.
- Complete the Tower to raise the Fortress, then clear a Corrupted Nexus and the anomaly map to unlock Doryani and Jado. Visit Hilda's Campsite.
- Push the Fortress route to the quest Arbiter of Divinity.
- Re-clear both Halls on Tier 15 Waystones and kill the non-quest Arbiter to finish the Fortress.
- Allocate the tree, pick one mechanic, and start farming. The PoE2 currency farming guide ranks the current Divine Orb farms.
Plan for alts and returning players
- Returning from 0.4 or earlier: the Atlas was reset in 0.5.0. Old tablets and Waystones still work, but Atlas points now only come from the Fortress (GGG 0.5.0).
- Returning from Runes of Aldur: Expedition is now core. The Verisium Anvil unlocks through The Runeseeker quest in Act 4 outside that league (GGG 0.5.5).
- Alts and party help: GGG's 0.5.0 notes say completion of fixed Atlas locations is shared with party members, so a friend's group can help an alt through Towers and points of interest. The 0.5.5 Fortress completion applies to the map owner, so each character needs its own non-quest Arbiter kill (GGG 0.5.5).
- Account rules: GGG's terms forbid sharing your login with a third party. The PoE2 currency and boosting rules guide explains what that means for paid help.

FAQ
How does the endgame work in PoE2? You run maps on the Atlas by placing Waystones in the map device, pushing outward from the Ziggurat Refuge. Completing Towers raises the Precursor Fortress, which is where Atlas passive points come from, and each league mechanic has its own hub and pinnacle path.
How do I get Atlas passive points in PoE2? Clear maps inside the Precursor Fortress, which rises after your first Tower. In 0.5.5, one non-quest Arbiter of Divinity kill completes the whole Fortress.
Why didn't my Fortress unlock after killing the Arbiter of Divinity? You did the quest version. Build a non-quest Origin Core from the Halls and kill him again (GGG 0.5.5).
Can I respec the Atlas tree? No, but you don't need to. The whole tree can be allocated, and multi-choice nodes can be switched at any time (GGG 0.5.0).
How do I unlock Masters of the Atlas? Clear a Corrupted Nexus for Doryani, visit Hilda's Campsite for Hilda, and complete an anomaly map for Jado.
Do you lose experience when you die in PoE2 maps? Yes. In most endgame areas a death costs 10% of the experience needed for your next level, though it can't de-level you and pinnacle boss deaths are exempt (PoE2 Wiki).
