OSRS Crafting Guide 1-99 (2026): Fastest, Cheap, AFK and F2P
OSRS Crafting guide 1-99: quest skip to 11, gems, battlestaves and d'hide bodies for speed, glass, golems and Superglass Make, F2P and ironman routes.

In this guide 14 sections
Quick summary
- Quest skip: Sheep Shearer (150 XP) and Murder Mystery (1,406 XP) take you from 1 to 11 with no skill requirements (OSRS Wiki).
- Fastest: leather to 20, gems to 62, battlestaves to 77, then d'hide bodies to 99. That's about 31 hours from 20 to 99 by our arithmetic from the wiki's rates. It costs a lot.
- Cheaper fast option: green and blue d'hide bodies from 63 are about as fast as battlestaves and need much less capital (OSRS Wiki).
- Low effort: glassblowing 1-99 is about 116 hours by our arithmetic. Golem crafting (60+) and Superglass Make (61+, Lunar) are mid-speed alternatives.
- Costume needle: from the Costumer in Aldarin after Death on the Isle. It lets you make 9 d'hide bodies per inventory instead of 8.
This OSRS Crafting guide covers members' Crafting from 1 to 99, with a free-to-play section near the end. XP rates and item counts come from the OSRS Wiki's Crafting training page, checked on October 28, 2026, and the F2P methods from its free-to-play Crafting page. It's about Old School RuneScape, not RuneScape 3. 99 needs 13,034,431 XP, and every hour estimate is our arithmetic on the wiki's rates.
Pick your route
| Route | Levels | Methods | Time (our arithmetic) | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fastest | 1-99 | Quests to 11, leather to 20, gems to 62, fire then air battlestaves to 77, red then black d'hide bodies | About 31 hours from 20 | The most expensive route. Battlestaves tie up lots of capital |
| Fast, less capital | 1-99 | Same, but green d'hide bodies at 63 and blue at 71 instead of battlestaves | About 31 hours from 20 | Similar speed; the wiki says much less capital |
| Low attention, cheap | 1-99 | Glassblowing (drift nets 26-46 optional) | About 116 hours | Slow, but cheap and easy |
| Mid-speed, Wyrmscraig | 60-99 | Golem crafting | About 69 hours (high intensity) to 128 hours (low intensity) | Needs Fallen From Grace. Also trains Hunter |
| Profit-leaning | 61-99 | Superglass Make, then blow the glass | About 83-118 hours of casting | Needs 77 Magic and Lunar Diplomacy. Trains Magic too |
| Lamps | 52-99 | Fixing goblin lamps in Dorgesh-Kaan | About 99-144 hours | Also gives Firemaking XP |
Hours divide the XP for each bracket by the wiki's XP/h figure for that method. They assume you keep going without breaks. Real sessions are slower.
Quests that give Crafting XP
All quests together give 135,143 Crafting XP (OSRS Wiki). These are the ones most worth doing early:
| Quest | Crafting XP | Crafting requirement (wiki) | Other requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sheep Shearer | 150 | None | None (F2P) |
| Murder Mystery | 1,406 | None | None |
| Animal Magnetism | 1,000 | 19 | Slayer 18, Ranged 30, Woodcutting 35 |
| The Golem | 1,000 | 20 | Thieving 25 |
| Making History | 1,000 | 24 | None |
| Shades of Mort'ton | 2,000 | 20 | Herblore 15, Firemaking 5 |
| The Giant Dwarf | 2,500 | 12 | Firemaking 16, Magic 33, Thieving 14 |
| Nature Spirit | 3,000 | 18 (as listed) | None |
| Shilo Village | 3,875 | 20 | Agility 32, Smithing 4 |
| Elemental Workshop I | 5,000 | 20 | Smithing 20, Mining 20 |
| Death on the Isle | 5,000 | None | Agility 32, Thieving 34 |
| Elemental Workshop II | 7,500 | 20 | Magic 20, Smithing 30 |
| Cabin Fever | 7,000 | 45 | Agility 42, Smithing 50, Ranged 40 |
| Enakhra's Lament | 7,000 | 50 | Firemaking 45, Prayer 43, Magic 39, Mining 45 |
| The Hand in the Sand | 9,000 | 49 | Thieving 17 |
| The Fremennik Exiles | 50,000 | 65 | Slayer 60, Smithing 60, Fishing 60, Runecraft 55 |
Do Death on the Isle early. It gives 5,000 Crafting XP and unlocks the costume needle you'll want for d'hide bodies later.
Step 1: 1-11 with two quests
- Sheep Shearer (F2P). Bring 20 balls of wool, or shear sheep north of Lumbridge and spin upstairs in Lumbridge Castle. You get 150 XP, enough for level 2.
- Murder Mystery. Talk to the guard at Sinclair Mansion north of Seers' Village. You get 1,406 XP, taking you to 11. The two quests together give 1,556 XP, and level 11 needs 1,358 (our arithmetic).
Step 2: 11-20 with leather
You need a needle, thread and leather. Each item takes 3 ticks to make (OSRS Wiki).
| Levels | Leather item | XP | Items needed from 1 (wiki) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-7 | Gloves | 13.8 | 48 |
| 7-9 | Boots | 16.2 | 19 |
| 9-11 | Cowl | 18.5 | 21 |
| 11-14 | Vambraces | 22 | 34 |
| 14-18 | Body | 25 | 57 |
| 18-20 | Chaps | 27 | 36 |
From 1 it's 215 leather in total, per the wiki. After the quest skip, you only need the rows from 11. Each thread lasts several items, so bring a stack.
Step 3: 20-62 cutting gems
Use a chisel on uncut gems at a bank. The wiki assumes 2,780 gems an hour, or 275 more with a Jeweller's chisel.
| Level | Gem | XP | XP/h | XP/h (Jeweller's chisel) | Gems (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | Sapphire | 50 | 139,000 | 152,750 | About 106 to 27 (wiki) |
| 27 | Emerald | 67.5 | 187,650 | 206,210 | About 156 to 34 |
| 34 | Ruby | 85 | 236,300 | 259,675 | About 355 to 43 |
| 43 | Diamond | 107.5 | 298,850 | 328,410 | About 2,640 to 62 |
| 55 | Dragonstone | 137.5 | 382,250 | 420,060 | Optional, much more expensive |
Our arithmetic: 20-62 takes about 1.2 hours. The wiki suggests sticking with diamonds to 62 because dragonstones cost far more. Onyx is faster still, but the wiki calls it not viable because of cost and supply. You can sell the cut gems or keep them for jewellery and gem bolt tips, which our Fletching guide turns into some of the fastest Fletching XP in the game.
Step 4: 62-77, battlestaves or green/blue d'hide
Option A: battlestaves. Use an elemental orb on a battlestaff. The wiki assumes 2,450 an hour, or up to 2,625 with perfect banking.
| Level | Battlestaff | XP | XP/h | Staves (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 54 | Water | 100 | 245,000 | — |
| 58 | Earth | 112.5 | 275,625 | — |
| 62 | Fire | 125 | 306,250 | About 1,300 to 66 |
| 66 | Air | 137.5 | 336,875 | About 7,120 to 77 |
That's about 3.4 hours for 62-77 by our arithmetic. With Varrock Diary tiers done, Zaff sells you a daily stock of noted battlestaves for less than the GE price. You can high-alch the finished staves to recover part of the cost (OSRS Wiki). The orbs themselves start as unpowered orbs from glassblowing, which Magic players charge at the elemental obelisks, so a glassblower has a steady buyer.
Option B: green and blue d'hide bodies. Green bodies from 63 (186 XP) and blue from 71 (210 XP) give similar rates to fire and air battlestaves and need much less capital, per the wiki. 63-77 is about 3.3 hours by our arithmetic: about 2,400 green bodies to 71, then about 3,150 blue bodies to 77.
Step 5: 77-99 with d'hide bodies
Each body needs 3 leather of the matching dragonhide.
| Level | Body | XP | XP/h (8 per inventory) | XP/h (9, costume needle) | XP/h (tick manipulation) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 63 | Green | 186 | 313,410 | 317,130 | 331,638 |
| 71 | Blue | 210 | 353,850 | 358,050 | 374,430 |
| 77 | Red | 234 | 394,290 | 398,970 | 417,222 |
| 84 | Black | 258 | 434,730 | 439,890 | 460,014 |
Our arithmetic: 77-84 takes about 6,300 red bodies and 84-99 about 39,100 black bodies, about 26.6 hours with the costume needle. The black bodies alone need about 117,000 tanned hides.
Step by step:
- Get the costume needle from the Costumer in Aldarin after Death on the Isle. Without it you need thread and fit 8 bodies per inventory.
- Turn on deposit lock in the bank so "Deposit inventory" keeps the needle.
- Withdraw 27 leather and make 9 bodies. Bank and repeat.
- Optional: buy untanned hides and cast Tan Leather (Lunar) to save some cost, per the wiki's self-tan column.
- Tick manipulation (the wiki describes using a gnome at the Gnome Stronghold bank) adds about 5%, but needs a second account and constant attention.
Low-attention routes
Glassblowing (1-99). Use a glassblowing pipe on molten glass at a bank. The wiki assumes 1,750 items an hour.
| Levels | Item | XP | XP/h |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-4 | Beer glass | 17.5 | 30,625 |
| 4-12 | Empty candle lantern | 19 | 33,250 |
| 12-33 | Empty oil lamp | 25 | 43,750 |
| 33-42 | Vial | 35 | 61,250 |
| 42-46 | Empty fishbowl | 42.5 | 74,375 |
| 46-49 | Unpowered orb | 52.5 | 91,875 |
| 49-87 | Lantern lens | 55 | 96,250 |
| 87-99 | Empty light orb | 70 | 122,500 |
That's about 116 hours from 1 to 99 by our arithmetic. From 26 to 46, crafting drift nets at Fossil Island's Museum Camp (loom and bank chest) gives about 60,000 XP/h, which the wiki says beats glassblowing until unpowered orbs at 46. Spinning and weaving with flax, hemp and cotton is another Fossil Island option: weaving cotton bolts from 73 gives up to 150,150 XP/h (OSRS Wiki).
Golem crafting (60+). After Fallen From Grace, mine sunstone on Wyrmscraig, shape a golem at a plinth (chisel, hammer, four sunstones), then finish it with a sunstone core and a fur. The wiki gives about 100,000 Crafting XP/h at low intensity (plus about 28,000 Hunter XP/h; see our Hunter guide), and over 185,000 at high intensity with good furs and fast clicking. That's about 69-128 hours from 60 to 99 by our arithmetic.
Superglass Make (61+). You need 77 Magic and Lunar Diplomacy. Each inventory uses 3 giant seaweed and 18 buckets of sand, with a smoke battlestaff or an air staff with a tome of fire. The wiki gives 108,000-153,000 Crafting and 46,800-66,300 Magic XP/h at 600-850 casts an hour, including blowing the glass.
Goblin lamps in Dorgesh-Kaan (52+). Each fixed lamp gives 500 Crafting and 500 Firemaking XP, plus a 2,500 XP bonus in both skills every 50 lamps. The wiki gives up to 130,000 Crafting XP/h if you make your own light orbs, or about 90,000 while you're learning.
Amethyst (83+). Chiselling amethyst into tips gives 60 XP each and 165,000 XP/h, usually at a small loss. Our Mining guide covers mining the amethyst yourself, and the Fletching guide covers using the tips.
Fishing crane repair (30+). In Port Piscarilius, each repair gives 4 × your level in both Crafting and Construction. It's slow but cheap; see our Construction guide.
Jewellery shortlist
At a furnace with gold or silver bars and the right mould. Smelting your own bars trains Smithing at the same time (our Smithing guide). The best furnace-to-bank spot is Wyrmscraig (Fallen From Grace), then Prifddinas (Song of the Elves). The wiki assumes 1,400 gem-and-bar items an hour.
| Level | Item | XP | XP/h |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | Gold bracelet | 25 | 40,000 |
| 23 | Sapphire bracelet | 60 | 84,000 |
| 30 | Emerald bracelet | 65 | 91,000 |
| 42 | Ruby bracelet | 80 | 112,000 |
| 58 | Diamond bracelet | 95 | 133,000 |
| 74 | Dragonstone bracelet | 110 | 154,000 |
| 80 | Dragonstone amulet (u) | 150 | 210,000 |
Jewellery is slower than gems and bodies, but it's a good use for gems you've cut yourself. You can enchant the pieces with Magic afterwards.
Train Crafting in free-to-play
Free-to-play players can't make battlestaves, d'hide bodies or golems, but they still have a workable route, per the OSRS Wiki's F2P page:
| Levels | Method | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1-8 | Sheep Shearer (150), Goblin Diplomacy (200) and Misthalin Mystery (600) | The three F2P quests together reach level 8 |
| 8-20 | Leather items, then leather chaps at 18 | Fastest low-level F2P XP |
| 20-99 | Cutting sapphires, emeralds, rubies and diamonds | In-place at any bank; a small loss per gem |
| 6+ | Gold and gem jewellery at the Edgeville furnace | Slower, but several items sold for a small profit at late-October 2026 prices |
Example: a free-to-play player with 30 Crafting and little gold can alternate: cut sapphires and emeralds while the price is low, and smelt gold necklaces or sapphire necklaces at Edgeville when they want to make money back. Check prices before you buy in bulk, because the margins are small and move.
Ironman and returning players
Ironmen. Collect cowhides and dragonhides yourself, then tan them at a tanner or with Tan Leather. Glassblowing with sand and seaweed you collect yourself, then Superglass Make, is the classic ironman route. Golem crafting gives uncut gems and Hunter XP too. Cut gems from Mining and Slayer feed jewellery and bolt tips.
Returning players. Three things changed:
- The costume needle (Death on the Isle) gives 9 bodies per inventory.
- Golem crafting on Wyrmscraig is a new 60+ method.
- Spinning and weaving with Sailing-era materials is a new mid-level option.
Wyrmscraig is now the best furnace for jewellery.

FAQ
What is the fastest way to get 99 Crafting in OSRS? Do the quests to 11, make leather items to 20, cut gems to 62, make battlestaves (or green and blue bodies) to 77, then d'hide bodies to 99. That's about 31 hours from 20 by our arithmetic with the wiki's rates.
What's the cheapest way to train Crafting? Glassblowing. It's about 116 hours to 99 by our arithmetic. Drift nets from 26 to 46 are faster, and the wiki says they can turn a profit.
Where do I get the costume needle? From the Costumer in Aldarin after Death on the Isle. It lets you make 9 d'hide bodies per inventory instead of 8.
Battlestaves or d'hide bodies at 62? The wiki says green and blue bodies match fire and air battlestaves and need less capital. Compare prices on the day.
Which quests give the most Crafting XP? The Fremennik Exiles (50,000), then The Hand in the Sand (9,000) and Elemental Workshop II (7,500). All quests together give 135,143.
How do I train Crafting in free-to-play? Do Sheep Shearer, Goblin Diplomacy and Misthalin Mystery for level 8, make leather items to 20, then cut gems or make gold jewellery at Edgeville (OSRS Wiki).
