THE GUIDE

Quick summary

  • Sailing is a members-only skill released on November 19, 2025 (ScapePath). Start it with the Pandemonium quest at Port Sarim.
  • Fastest route (OSRS Wiki): quests, sea charting and courier tasks to 30, then The Tempor Tantrum (30–54), The Jubbly Jive (55–71) and The Gwenith Glide (72–99, which needs Regicide).
  • Gwenith Glide rates: the OSRS Wiki's published trial rates put Marlin rank at about 184,000 XP per hour at target time. A crystal extractor brings that to about 198,000.
  • Less-intensive route: courier routes. Summer Shore after Troubled Tortugans, then Rellekka at 62, Prifddinas at 70 and Lunar Isle at 76. Lunar Isle gives an estimated 130,000–160,000 XP per hour, with five task slots from level 84.
  • Jagex has rebalanced Sailing several times. Courier XP rose 10% in June 2026 (ironman.guide), bounty tasks got about five times longer, and deep sea trawling changed in May 2026.

Unlock Sailing with Pandemonium

  1. Go to the Port Sarim docks and talk to Will or Anne. Accept the salvaging run.
  2. Take the helm and sail south through the Bay of Sarim to the pirate wreck east of the Karamja Shipyard. Lower the hook to pull up a medallion and an old cup.
  3. After the cutscene, you wake up on The Pandemonium, the Sailing hub. Talk to Squawking Steve Beanie, then Ribs in the pub.
  4. Trade the old cup to Junior Jim for a raft. Take the hammer and saw from the shipyard crates, then build a cargo hold.
  5. Collect a cargo crate from the ledger table at Port Sarim and deliver it back to The Pandemonium. Then talk to Junior Jim and Steve to finish.

The rewards are the Sailing skill, your raft, the captain's log (which tracks charting tasks) and 300 Sailing XP (OSRS Wiki quest table). Keep the raft even after you upgrade. The wiki notes that a few charting tasks need it to reach areas that skiffs and sloops can't.

Level 1–30 with quests and sea charting

Before level 30, the wiki recommends sea charting ahead of courier tasks. It puts charting at around 10,000 XP per hour at level 22, mostly from region-completion bonuses. Pick up courier tasks along your charting route.

Quest XP

Quest Sailing XP (OSRS Wiki) Sailing level
Pandemonium 300 —
Prying Times 800 12
Current Affairs 1,400 22
Crab Quest 10,000 40
Troubled Tortugans 10,000 45
Fallen From Grace 12,500 62
The Red Reef 15,000 52

The wiki says all quests plus every task in every fully chartable sea total 107,755 XP, which ends at level 50. The Mythic Sea becomes fully chartable at 51 for another 4,430 XP. To reach 52 for The Red Reef, you need 11,475 XP from other methods.

Wiki progression to 45

Levels Do this
1–4 Pandemonium
4–12 Courier tasks while charting (generic and spyglass tasks)
12–14 Prying Times
14–22 Courier tasks and charting (crowbar tasks open)
22–24 Current Affairs
24–30 Courier tasks and charting (current duck tasks open)
30–45 The Tempor Tantrum or keep charting; Crab Quest at 40; Troubled Tortugans at 45

Trim your sails every time. On the raft, each trim during a gust gives 10.5 XP, and higher-level sails give more. Ocean encounters, such as mysterious glows, strong winds and castaways you rescue and drop at a dock, add passive XP with no level requirement.

Run the Barracuda Trials for the fastest XP

Each trial has three ranks: Swordfish, Shark and Marlin. Your first clear of each rank gives bonus XP and unlocks the next rank (OSRS Wiki). The table below uses the wiki's per-rank XP formula and target times, plus 10 seconds per run for setup. These are best-case figures from target times, not observed averages.

Trial (level) Rank XP per run Target time XP/hour (OSRS Wiki)
The Tempor Tantrum (30) Swordfish 634 108 s ~19,300
The Tempor Tantrum (30) Shark 1,103 171 s ~21,900
The Tempor Tantrum (30) Marlin 1,907 270 s ~24,500
The Jubbly Jive (55) Swordfish 2,392 123 s ~64,700
The Jubbly Jive (55) Shark 4,270 180 s ~80,900
The Jubbly Jive (55) Marlin 8,176 321 s ~88,900
The Gwenith Glide (72) Swordfish 4,100 120 s ~113,500
The Gwenith Glide (72) Shark 9,315 222 s ~144,500
The Gwenith Glide (72) Marlin 19,410 369 s ~184,400 (~198,100 with crystal extractor)

How to push these numbers higher:

  • Upgrade the boat. The wiki says a rosewood hull (93 Sailing, 84 Construction) raises base speed by 20%. That's about 15% more laps per hour, which takes Gwenith Glide Marlin to 200,000 XP per hour or more with an extractor.
  • Clear Tempor Tantrum Shark early. It unlocks the Whirlpool Surprise keg, an unlimited +3 boost.
  • Collect every crate. Each rank has a collection requirement as well as a timer, and a fast run that misses crates doesn't count.

Use courier routes for less-intensive XP and coins

Courier tasks pay XP plus a loot sack. Sacks come in five tiers, from Tiny to Huge, and scale with task level and distance. Each sack has a 4/5 chance of coins and a 1/5 chance of supplies (OSRS Wiki). Longer routes pay more, so take tasks that start far away and teleport to the pickup.

Route Level Est. XP/hour Key requirement Recommended items
Summer Shore 45 ~20,000 Troubled Tortugans; 20,000 coins to recover the boat Skiff, oak sails
Rellekka 62 ~66,000 (~99,000 with Etceteria at 65) Favorable boards House in Aldarin, quetzal whistle, enchanted lyre or Fremennik sea boots
Prifddinas 70 ~71,000–77,000 Song of the Elves Ring of Charos, sailor's amulet, Aldarin teleport
Lunar Isle 76 ~130,000–160,000 Five slots at 84 Crystal extractor, Lunar Isle teleport, teleport focus facility

Lunar Isle round trips (wiki XP per task): Aldarin 12,671; Deepfin Point 9,092; Civitas illa Fortis 7,381; Port Roberts 5,851; Prifddinas 5,491; Piscatoris 3,150. At Prifddinas, also check for Aldarin → Prifddinas (7,082) and Deepfin Point → Prifddinas (4,721). The wiki adds that the black portal in The Gwenith Glide is a shortcut toward Lunar Isle once all your slots are full.

Caveats. The wiki's courier rates were extrapolated from tests run before the 10% courier XP increase. Trimming and extractor XP didn't increase, so totals aren't exactly 10% higher. Before you summon your boat, check that the cargo hold is empty, because the wiki warns that summoning deletes anything stored inside.

Salvage shipwrecks for low-attention XP

Salvaging starts at 15 and speeds up a lot at 42, once you build the salvaging station (OSRS Wiki). The wiki's rates assume one crewmate with deckhandiness 4 and you salvaging actively:

Level Shipwreck Best tested setup XP/hour
15 Small Iron hook 3,000–3,200
26 Fisherman's Steel hook 4,700–5,800
35 Barracuda Mithril, 2 hooks 16,000–18,000
53 Large Adamant, 2 hooks 25,000–30,000
64 Pirate Adamant, 2 hooks 44,000–47,000
73 Mercenary Rune, 2 hooks 65,000–70,000
80 Fremennik Rune, 2 hooks 65,000–85,000
87 Merchant Dragon, 2 hooks 80,000–95,000

Tips from the wiki:

  • Crewmates. A crewmate salvages at 10%–40% of normal XP, depending on deckhandiness. Cabin Boy Jenkins (60) and Jolly Jim (85) have the maximum of 4. Jobless Jim (40) and Ex-Captain Siad (50) have 3.
  • Salvaging worlds. Use world 486 (unofficial) or the official worlds 596 and 597. Other players clear distant wrecks, so the ones near you respawn faster.
  • Tick manipulation gives roughly 2–2.5 times the XP, at much higher intensity.
  • Boost your level. Boosting reaches higher-tier wrecks. The Preserve prayer, or the Whirlpool Surprise keg, keeps the boost up.

Pick bounty tasks for drops and profit

Bounty tasks assign a sea monster and a number of bounty items to collect. The wiki says most tasks are now about five times longer than at launch, with XP rebalanced to match. On-task rates also improved for drops like the dragon cannon barrel, dragon salvaging hook, bottled storm, echo pearl and dragon metal sheet. Bounty items drop from any monster of the right type, anywhere, and you can turn tasks in to any port master. All tasks are available at 80.

For combat, give Oarswoman Olga a mithril cannon and add Jittery Jim on a second cannon. A ballistic attractor cuts cannonball use. Cannon damage scales with your Ranged level and ranged strength (OSRS Wiki). For more ways to fund upgrades, see our money-making guide.

Stack the crystal extractor on everything

At 73 Sailing and 67 Construction, the crystal extractor gives 250 XP per harvest, about once every 63 seconds. The wiki puts the maximum at 15,000 XP per hour and calls 10,000 more realistic. That XP stacks on top of charting, salvaging, trawling, trials or simply sailing. On a skiff, place it to the right of the helm so you can use it without leaving the helm. On a sloop, place it above and to the left (OSRS Wiki).

Compare the three routes to 99

Route Method sequence Strength Weakness Source
Fastest Charting and quests → Tempor Tantrum → Jubbly Jive → Gwenith Glide Highest XP; ~184,000/hour at target time Very active; needs boat upgrades OSRS Wiki
Less intensive Charting → Summer Shore → Rellekka → Prifddinas → Lunar Isle Loot sacks and coins; 130,000–160,000/hour late Board luck; needs quests and teleports OSRS Wiki
Low attention Salvaging from 15, crewmate-heavy setups from 42 Lowest input Slowest; needs sorting trips OSRS Wiki
Drops Bounty tasks to 80 and beyond Profit and unique drops Not built for maximum XP OSRS Wiki

Theoatrix says courier tasks at Lunar Isle can reach "up to 150k XP per hour," which falls inside the wiki's range.

Ironmen, alts and returning players

  • Returning players: If you trained before mid-2026, recheck courier and bounty plans. Courier XP rose 10% (ironman.guide), and bounty tasks are about five times longer (OSRS Wiki).
  • Ironmen: ironman.guide follows the same core route but plans materials around self-sourcing. Salvaging and courier supply bundles feed boat upgrades.
  • Alts: Charting and quest XP are one-time per character, worth 107,755 XP to level 50. Do them first on every account before repeating any method.
  • New accounts: Our OSRS beginner guide covers the quest and skill basics you'll want before Sailing. For combat drops at sea, see our Slayer guide.

FAQ

How do I start Sailing in OSRS? Get membership and complete Pandemonium at the Port Sarim docks. It unlocks the skill, your raft and the captain's log.

What is the fastest Sailing XP? Barracuda Trials from level 30. The Gwenith Glide Marlin rank works out to about 184,000 XP per hour at target time according to the OSRS Wiki's published trial rates, or about 198,000 with a crystal extractor.

Is there a less-intensive way to 99? Yes. The OSRS Wiki estimates the Lunar Isle courier route from 76 at 130,000–160,000 XP per hour, and it pays loot sacks.

When do I get a better boat? The skiff at 15 and the sloop at 50 (ScapePath).

How much XP do quests and charting give? All quests plus every chartable sea total 107,755 XP, enough for level 50 (OSRS Wiki).

Is shipwreck salvaging AFK? Mostly. Crewmates can salvage while you idle, but at reduced XP. Active salvaging and tick manipulation are faster.

Is Theoatrix's Sailing guide still accurate? Partly. That guide dates from launch, and courier, bounty and trawling changes in 2026 shifted several methods.
