OSRS Slayer Guide 1–99: Masters, Points, Unlocks, and Task Picks
OSRS Slayer guide from 1 to 99: which master to use at each level, how points and streaks work, the first unlocks to buy, what to block.

In this guide 13 sections
Quick summary
- Slayer is a members' skill. A Slayer Master assigns a monster and a kill count, and you earn Slayer XP (roughly the monster's Hitpoints) only on those kills.
- Use the best master you can: Turael (any level), Mazchna (20 combat), Vannaka (40), Chaeldar (70), Konar (75), Nieve/Steve (85), Duradel (100 combat + 50 Slayer). Mortimer (100 combat + 70 Slayer, added July 2026) offers a choice of tasks with modifiers.
- Points start on your fifth task. Every 10th, 50th, 100th, 250th, and 1,000th task in a row pays 5×, 15×, 25×, 35×, and 50× the master's base points.
- Buy first: Bigger and Badder (50), Malevolent Masquerade for the Slayer helm (400, 55 Crafting), then Broader Fletching (300) or Ring Bling (150). Fill your block slots as soon as you have points.
- XP rates: about 15,000/hour early, 35,000–40,000 with a cannon, and 100,000–150,000 bursting or barraging in multi-combat (OSRS Best in Slot, OSRS Wiki). These are estimates.
How Slayer works
- Get a task from a Slayer Master: a monster type and a count. Right-click Assignment on any master to get a new task or check your current one.
- Kill your task monsters. Each kill gives Slayer XP about equal to the monster's Hitpoints, plus your normal combat XP.
- Meet the requirements. Many monsters need a minimum Slayer level, and some need an item: a nose peg, earmuffs, a mirror shield, a rock hammer, a bag of salt, or an ice cooler. Every master's shop sells these. Its enchanted gem costs 1 coin and tracks your remaining kills.
- Finish and return for points (after your first four tasks) and a new task.
Masters respect your combat level by default, so you won't get tasks far above you. Change it with "Let's talk about the difficulty of my assignments" (OSRS Wiki). Since October 2025, you can cancel a task you can't complete, for example because of a quest or Slayer requirement, for free without losing your streak.
Choose the right Slayer master
| Master | Requirement | Location and fastest travel | Base points | Block cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Turael / Aya | None | Burthorpe: games necklace or combat bracelet | 0 | 40 | Easiest tasks. Replacing another master's task resets your streak |
| Spria | A Porcine of Interest | Draynor Village: amulet of glory | 0 | 40 | Turael's list plus sourhogs. Shares Turael's block list |
| Mazchna / Achtryn | 20 combat, Priest in Peril | NE of Canifis: fairy ring CKS, Ectophial | 6 | 50 | Can assign rockslugs |
| Vannaka | 40 combat | Edgeville Dungeon: glory to Edgeville, fairy ring DKR | 8 | 60 | Wider list; blue dragons can be hard at low levels |
| Chaeldar | 70 combat, Lost City | Zanaris (any fairy ring) | 10 | 70 | Mid-to-high tasks |
| Konar quo Maten | 75 combat | Mount Karuulm: Rada's blessing 3/4, fairy ring CIR | 18 (20 with elite Kourend & Kebos) | 80 | Kills must be in the named location. Brimstone keys. Hydra tasks |
| Nieve / Steve | 85 combat | Tree Gnome Stronghold: Slayer ring to the Stronghold Slayer Cave | 12 (15 with elite Western Provinces) | 90 | Similar list to Duradel, plus a few weaker tasks |
| Duradel / Kuradal | 100 combat, 50 Slayer, Shilo Village | Shilo Village: Karamja gloves 4 (direct), fairy ring CKR | 15 | 100 | Best for XP (OSRS Wiki) |
| Mortimer | 100 combat, 70 Slayer, part of Fallen From Grace | Wyrmscraig Cavern: Slayer ring after the quest | 0, or 5–40 with the points modifier | 120 | Choice of 2 tasks (3 after 50). Only monsters with superiors. 2 block slots, 100-point skips, no Turael skips |
| Krystilia | None | Edgeville jail: glory to Edgeville | 25 | 100 | Wilderness only, separate streak, Larran's keys |
The combat requirement doesn't apply if you have 99 Slayer and show the cape.
Krystilia warning: her tasks pay the most points, but every one is in the Wilderness, where other players can kill you and take your items. Don't take her tasks while you're learning Slayer.
Example: you're 52 combat with Priest in Peril done. Vannaka is your best master. If his blue dragon or other tough tasks are too much, use Mazchna until your stats catch up.
Train Slayer from 1 to 99
| Slayer level | Master | What opens up (Slayer requirement) | Method |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–20 | Turael → Mazchna | Crawling hands (5), cave bugs (7), cave crawlers (10), banshees (15, earmuffs), cave slime (17) | Melee in your best gear. Do Animal Magnetism and A Porcine of Interest for quest XP |
| 20–40 | Mazchna → Vannaka | Rockslugs (20, salt), desert lizards (22, ice cooler), cockatrice (25, mirror shield), pyrefiends (30), mogres (32), harpie bug swarms (33), wall beasts (35), killerwatts (37), molanisks (39) | Quest XP from Royal Trouble and Lair of Tarn Razorlor at 40 |
| 40–55 | Vannaka → Chaeldar | Basilisks (40), sea snakes (40), terror dogs (40), fever spiders (42), infernal mages (45), brine rats (47), bloodveld (50), gryphons (51), jellies (52) | Dwarf multicannon on suitable tasks. Make the Slayer helm at 55 Crafting |
| 55–75 | Chaeldar → Konar / Nieve | Turoths (55, broad ammo or leaf-bladed weapon), warped creatures (56), mutated zygomites (57), cave horrors (58), aberrant spectres (60), wyrms (62), spiritual creatures (63), dust devils (65), Fossil Island wyverns (66), kurask (70), skeletal wyverns (72) | Cannon tasks. Start bursting dust devils in the Catacombs of Kourend if you have Ancient Magicks |
| 75–93 | Nieve → Duradel (at 100 combat) | Gargoyles (75), nechryael (80), drakes (84), abyssal demons (85), cave kraken (87), dark beasts (90), araxytes (92) | Barrage nechryael and dust devils. Cannon mutated bloodveld, kalphites, and dagannoth |
| 93–99 | Duradel (or Mortimer) | Smoke devils (93), hydras (95) | Barraging smoke devils is the fastest XP in the game (OSRS Wiki) |
Requirement levels come from the OSRS Wiki's task summary and monster pages. Quest XP adds up too: the OSRS Wiki lists 191,348 Slayer XP from quests and miniquests, including Monkey Madness II (80,000), The Fremennik Exiles (50,000), Perilous Moons (40,000), and The Path of Glouphrie (20,000).
Understand Slayer points
Points start with your fifth completed task. Milestones multiply the master's base (OSRS Wiki):
| Master | Per task | 10th | 50th | 100th | 250th | 1,000th |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mazchna | 6 | 30 | 90 | 150 | 210 | 300 |
| Vannaka | 8 | 40 | 120 | 200 | 280 | 400 |
| Chaeldar | 10 | 50 | 150 | 250 | 350 | 500 |
| Nieve / Steve | 12 (15) | 60 (75) | 180 (225) | 300 (375) | 420 (525) | 600 (750) |
| Duradel | 15 | 75 | 225 | 375 | 525 | 750 |
| Konar | 18 (20) | 90 (100) | 270 (300) | 450 (500) | 630 (700) | 900 (1,000) |
| Krystilia | 25 | 125 | 375 | 625 | 875 | 1,250 |
The Slayer Master page lists Mazchna and Vannaka's 100th+ milestones at the full multiplier, matching OSRS Best in Slot. The Slayer training page shows lower 100th, 250th, and 1,000th figures for those two masters. Check the master's dialogue if it matters for your streak.
Use the "Check" option on your enchanted gem or Slayer helm to see your streak. Mortimer's tasks don't count toward your streak with other masters, and milestones don't boost his points.
Turael boosting
Do nine quick tasks from Turael (or Mazchna), then take every 10th task from Konar or Duradel for the big payout (OSRS Wiki, OSRS Best in Slot). It farms points fast but earns little XP. It only works if you complete Turael's tasks. Asking Turael to replace another master's task resets your streak to zero.
Cancel, block, or do the task
| Option | Cost (OSRS Wiki) | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Do it | Free | Short, safe, or profitable tasks |
| Cancel | 30 points (Mortimer: 100) | A bad roll you don't always hate |
| Block | 40–120 points, depending on the master | A task you'd always skip from that master |
| Store | Free after the 500-point Task Storage unlock | Save a good task for later |
Block slots: one per 50 quest points (six at 300 quest points) plus one for the elite Lumbridge & Draynor Diary, for seven. Mortimer has only two. Since August 2025, each master has its own block list, except Turael, Aya, and Spria, who share one. Removing a block doesn't refund points.
Starter block list (OSRS Wiki, for Nieve, Konar, and Duradel):
- Wyrms (unless you have 62 Sailing for the Wyrmscraig cannon spot)
- Drakes
- Trolls
- Suqah (decent XP, poor drops)
- Then by preference. Block tasks with high weights first, since they come up more often. For example, spiritual creatures (weight 7) before zygomites (2).
Use Stop the Wyvern (500 points, toggleable) to block Fossil Island wyverns without using a slot. For toggle tasks like lizardmen, turn the toggle off instead of blocking.
What to buy with Slayer points
Buying every unlock and extension once costs 15,510 points (OSRS Wiki). Buy in this order:
| Unlock | Cost | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bigger and Badder | 50 | Superior monsters (1/200 chance) for more XP and a shot at the eternal gem and imbued heart. Toggle it off any time |
| Malevolent Masquerade | 400 | Build the Slayer helmet (55 Crafting) |
| Gargoyle Smasher | 120 | Finishes gargoyles automatically with a rock hammer |
| Broader Fletching | 300 | Broad arrows (52 Fletching) and bolts (55) for turoths and kurask |
| Ring Bling | 150 | Craft Slayer rings (75 Crafting) for teleports to task areas |
| Task Storage | 500 | Store a task and swap it in later for free |
| Like a Boss | 200 | Boss tasks from Konar, Nieve, Duradel, and Krystilia, plus 5,000 Slayer XP per completed boss task |
| Extensions | 50–200 each | Only for tasks you like, such as araxytes (OSRS Wiki's example) |
For the fastest XP, the OSRS Wiki's spending order is blocks, then superiors, the helm, extensions, and extras. The Slug Salter and Reptile Freezer cost only 10 points each since 2025, so buy them when rockslugs or desert lizards come up.
Build the Slayer helmet
Combine a black mask, facemask, earmuffs, nose peg, spiny helmet, and enchanted gem (plus reinforced goggles after A Porcine of Interest). You need 55 Crafting and the Malevolent Masquerade unlock. It takes 10 Defence to wear.
- Base helm: +16.67% melee accuracy and damage against your task (OSRS Best in Slot).
- Imbued helm (i): adds +15% Magic and Ranged. You need it for bursting and ranged tasks. Imbue it with Nightmare Zone points, Soul Wars Zeal, or a Scroll of Imbuing.
- Exceptions: it doesn't stack with a Salve amulet against undead, and it doesn't apply to Konar or Krystilia kills outside the assigned area.
Pick a training method
| Method | XP/hour (estimate) | Needs | Pros | Cons | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Melee every task | ~15,000 early, ~40,000 later | Good melee gear | Cheap, trains melee | Slow | Early accounts |
| Dwarf multicannon | ~35,000–40,000 (mid), up to 100,000 on bloodveld | Dwarf Cannon quest, cannonballs | Big boost on cannonable tasks | Costly. 750–1,500+ cannonballs per Duradel task | Mid-level, AFK-ish |
| Burst / barrage (Catacombs) | ~100,000 (dust devils, nechryael), ~150,000 (smoke devils) | Desert Treasure I, high Magic, runes | Fastest XP. Drops often cover runes | Click-intensive, crowded spots | Max XP |
| Venator bow | ~53,000–60,000 on stacked tasks | Venator bow | Low effort | Slower than barrage | Relaxed training |
| Turael boosting | Low | None | Most points | Little XP | Saving for unlocks |
Rates come from the OSRS Wiki's Duradel task summary and OSRS Best in Slot. Treat them as rough planning numbers.
Do or skip common Duradel tasks
From the OSRS Wiki's task summary (weight is how often the task comes up):
| Task | Weight | XP/h (OSRS Wiki) | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smoke devils | 9 | 150,000 (barrage) | Do |
| Dust devils | 5 | 100,000–110,000 (barrage) | Do |
| Nechryael | 9 | 100,000 (barrage) | Do |
| Araxytes | 10 | 100,000 (cannon + Venator) | Do |
| Bloodveld | 8 | 80,000–100,000 (cannon) | Do |
| Dagannoth | 9 | 85,000 | Do |
| Kalphites | 9 | 75,000 (cannon) | Do |
| Abyssal demons | 12 | 40,000–80,000 | Do for money, block for XP |
| Dark beasts | 11 | 42,000 | Do |
| Gargoyles | 8 | 30,000 | Do for profit |
| Hellhounds | 10 | 40,000 | Block unless killing Cerberus |
| Metal dragons | 14 | 15,000–30,000 | Do for profit, block for XP |
| Spiritual creatures | 7 | 25,000 | Skip |
| Wyrms / Drakes | 8 / 8 | 35,000 | Skip or block |
| Fossil Island wyverns | 5 | 15,000 | Block with Stop the Wyvern |
Profit tip from the OSRS Wiki: blocking common tasks raises the odds of the ones you want. For example, blocking abyssal demons and dark beasts makes araxytes more likely.
Prepare for each task
- Check the monster's Slayer level and any required item.
- Pick gear for its weakness. Use the dragon hunter lance on dragons, emberlight on demons, and a Salve amulet on undead.
- Bring food or prayer potions, a teleport out, and a cannon if the task allows one.
- Use fairy rings, a Slayer ring, Xeric's talisman, and Karamja gloves to save travel. The Lunar spell Astral Contact lets you get a new task without travelling (OSRS Wiki).
- Bank valuables before unfamiliar or dangerous areas.
Useful quests: Animal Magnetism (Ava's device), Desert Treasure I (Ancient Magicks), Fairytale II (fairy rings), Dwarf Cannon, Knight Waves Training Grounds (Piety), Bear Your Soul, and Priest in Peril (unlocks many Morytania tasks).
Returning players and Ironmen
- Returning after 2025: block lists are now per master, and your old blocks were refunded as points (OSRS Wiki). Rebuild your block list. Bigger and Badder dropped to 50 points, Ring Bling to 150, and Task Storage to 500. Mortimer is new, and you can now cancel impossible tasks for free.
- Ironmen: Slayer is a major supply source, with herbs, runes, alchables, and gear like the whip, trident, and occult necklace (OSRS Best in Slot). Use the same route, but lean on broad ammo and superiors. The OSRS Wiki's Mootrius Ironman Slayer guide goes deeper.
- Mid-level mains: Slayer pairs well with money-making. See our OSRS money-making guide. If Hot Stuff gives you a TzHaar task, you can take TzTok-Jad instead. Our Fire Cape guide covers that fight.

Frequently asked questions
Which Slayer master should I use in OSRS?
Use the highest one you can: Vannaka from 40 combat, Chaeldar from 70 (Lost City), Konar from 75, Nieve from 85, and Duradel from 100 combat with 50 Slayer. Drop back a tier if the tasks are too dangerous for your gear.
How do Slayer points work in OSRS?
Points start with your fifth completed task and come from every master except Turael and Spria. Every 10th, 50th, 100th, 250th, and 1,000th task in a row pays 5× to 50× the base points.
How do you get a Slayer helm in OSRS?
Unlock Malevolent Masquerade for 400 points. Then, with 55 Crafting, combine a black mask, facemask, earmuffs, nose peg, spiny helmet, and enchanted gem (plus reinforced goggles after A Porcine of Interest).
What should I buy first with Slayer points?
Bigger and Badder (50 points) for superior monsters, then Malevolent Masquerade (400) for the helm. After that, buy Broader Fletching or Ring Bling, and fill your block slots.
How many tasks can I block in OSRS?
Up to seven per master: one slot per 50 quest points (six at 300) plus one from the elite Lumbridge & Draynor Diary. Mortimer allows two.
What is the fastest way to train Slayer?
Bursting or barraging stacked tasks in multi-combat areas like the Catacombs of Kourend. The OSRS Wiki lists about 100,000 XP/hour on dust devils and nechryael, and about 150,000 on smoke devils.
Who is Mortimer in OSRS?
He's a Slayer Master added in July 2026 in Wyrmscraig Cavern. He needs 100 combat, 70 Slayer, and part of Fallen From Grace. He offers a choice of tasks with modifiers, such as bonus points, clue rates, or Slayer XP.
Does using Turael reset my Slayer streak?
Doing Turael's own tasks doesn't. Asking Turael to replace another master's task does, and you then need four more tasks before points start again.
