OSRS Prayer Guide 1-99 (2026): Fastest and Cheapest Methods
OSRS Prayer guide 1-99: quest skip to 30, gilded altar vs Chaos Altar vs libation bowl, bones needed for 43, 70, 77 and 99, plus F2P and ironman routes.

In this guide 13 sections
Quick summary
- Skip to 30 with quests. The Restless Ghost, Priest in Peril, Recruitment Drive and Holy Grail give 14,531 Prayer XP, which takes you from 1 to 30 (OSRS Wiki).
- Fastest: a gilded altar with both incense burners lit gives 350% XP per bone. That's about 1.34 million XP per hour with superior dragon bones.
- Cheapest fast method: the Chaos Temple altar in level 38 Wilderness gives the same 350% plus a 50% chance not to use the bone. That doubles your XP per bone, but player killers can catch you.
- No-risk middle ground: blessed bone shards at the libation bowl in Varlamore give more XP per bone than a gilded altar, at slightly lower hourly rates. It needs 30 Prayer and no quest (OSRS Wiki).
- Key levels: 43 for all three protection prayers, 70 for Piety, 77 for all prayers including Augury, 85 for every Achievement Diary.
This OSRS Prayer guide compares the three altar methods that matter, shows how many bones each goal costs, and covers free-to-play, Ironman and passive options. XP rates come from the OSRS Wiki's Prayer training page; bone counts and hours are our arithmetic from those rates and the XP table. Grand Exchange prices change daily, so the guide compares XP per bone rather than coin costs. It covers Old School RuneScape only.
Which Prayer levels matter in OSRS
| Level | Unlock | Why it matters (OSRS Wiki, RSGoals) |
|---|---|---|
| 25 | Another Slice of H.A.M. | Quest requirement |
| 43 | Protect from Melee (all three protection prayers) | Recommended by many quests |
| 50 | The Great Brain Robbery | Needed to finish every quest |
| 70 | Piety; bonecrusher necklace | Best melee prayer |
| 74 | Rigour | Best ranged prayer (needs a scroll) |
| 77 | Augury | Unlocks every prayer |
| 80 | Elidinis' ward | Shield upgrade |
| 85 | All Achievement Diaries | Elite diary requirement |
Prayer switching is the core skill at bosses such as the one in the OSRS Zulrah guide, which is why 43 is the first real target. Every 8 Prayer levels add 1 combat level, so 99 Prayer adds 12 combat levels (Theoatrix). Higher Prayer also restores more points per potion dose: a prayer potion restores 25% of your level plus 7.
Get to 30 Prayer with quests
| Quest | Prayer XP | Requirements (OSRS Wiki) |
|---|---|---|
| The Restless Ghost | 1,125 | None |
| Priest in Peril | 1,406 | None |
| Recruitment Drive | 1,000 | 12 quest points |
| Holy Grail | 11,000 | 20 Attack |
| Spirits of the Elid | 8,000 | 37 Thieving, 33 Magic, 37 Ranged, 37 Mining |
| Rag and Bone Man II | 5,000 | 40 Slayer, 20 Defence |
| Hopespear's Will (miniquest) | 38,750 | 50 Prayer |
| His Faithful Servants (miniquest) | 20,000 | None |
The first four total 14,531 XP, which is level 30. All quests and miniquests on the wiki list total 118,181 XP. RSGoals says the quest rewards alone reach about level 37.
Best Prayer training methods compared
XP per hour from the OSRS Wiki's comparison table, which assumes you use bones on altars manually:
| Bone | Base XP (buried) | Gilded altar | Chaos altar | Libation bowl (shards) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Big bones | 15 | 133,875 | 105,000 | 122,400 |
| Babydragon bones | 30 | 267,750 | 210,000 | 244,800 |
| Wyrm bones | 50 | 446,250 | 350,000 | 428,400 |
| Dragon bones | 72 | 642,600 | 504,000 | 591,600 |
| Drake bones | 80 | 714,000 | 560,000 | 683,400 |
| Hydra bones | 110 | 981,750 | 770,000 | 948,600 |
| Dagannoth bones | 125 | 1,115,625 | 875,000 | 1,020,000 |
| Superior dragon bones | 150 | 1,338,750 | 1,050,000 | 1,234,200 |
Altar XP per bone is the base XP times 3.5, which is why dagannoth bones beat everything except superior dragon bones. Vorkath drops two superior dragon bones on every kill, which is one reason the OSRS Vorkath guide is popular with Prayer trainers.
The trade-off:
- Gilded altar: 2,550 bones per hour, no risk, full bone cost.
- Chaos altar: 2,000 offerings per hour but only about 1,000 bones used, because of the 50% save. It's slower per hour but about half the cost per XP. You also pay 50 coins per bone to unnote at the Elder Chaos druid.
- Libation bowl: about 1,700 bones blessed and chiseled per hour. More XP per bone than a gilded altar, with no Wilderness risk.
With an alt: the wiki says an alt running bones or lighting burners raises rates by about 20–25% at a gilded altar, 40–45% at the Chaos altar and 30–35% at the libation bowl.
Gilded altar: the fastest safe method
- Build or borrow an altar. It needs 75 Construction (boostable), which the OSRS Construction guide plans for. Without that, use a house party host's altar. The wiki lists official hosting worlds, including 330.
- Light both incense burners with marrentill. The burner tier doesn't change the bonus.
- Bank efficiently. The wiki recommends the bank chest near Camelot Castle on a PvP world, with a dust battlestaff, a tinderbox and law runes in your inventory.
- Withdraw 24 bones per trip and use them on the altar manually for the 2,550-bones-per-hour pace.
Ironmen can't use friends' houses, so they need their own altar (OSRS Wiki).
Chaos Temple altar: the cheapest XP per bone
- Location: level 38 Wilderness, multi-combat. It's popular with player killers (OSRS Wiki).
- How to get there: Ghorrock Teleport and run south. Alternatives are the Ancient Obelisk with the hard Wilderness Diary, Cemetery Teleport (slower), or the burning amulet to the Lava Maze, which the wiki only recommends if you plan to die.
- Noted bones: unnote them at the Elder Chaos druid outside the south wall for 50 coins each. This puts more at risk if you're caught.
- Rates: up to 1.8 million XP per hour with superior dragon bones when bringing noted bones.
- Keep prayers up: the altar recharges Prayer points, so you can run Protect from Magic while offering.
Never bring more than you're willing to lose. Hardcore ironmen should skip this method (RSGoals).
Libation bowl: no-risk bone shards
The libation bowl is in the northern building of the Teomat, in Varlamore. You need level 30 Prayer and no quest (OSRS Wiki). Each offering drains 2 Prayer points, which you restore at the Shrine of Ralos in the southern building.
- Bless bones at the nearby exposed altar, then break them into blessed bone shards with a chisel. Virilis unnotes bones for a fee (OSRS Wiki).
- Fill the bowl with jugs of blessed wine (5 XP per shard) or blessed sunfire wine (6 XP per shard). One jug covers 400 shards.
- Sacrifice up to 100 shards per action. It runs automatically every 4 ticks while you have wine, shards and Prayer points.
- Recharge Prayer at the nearby altar. With 62+ Prayer you need about 3 recharges per inventory of wine.
Calcified rocks, a Mining method from 41, drop blessed bone shards directly; the OSRS Mining guide lists their rates.
Zealot's robes can save individual shards. Theoatrix calls it a fairly fast method with no Wilderness exposure, and RSGoals recommends it for ironmen from level 30.
How many bones for 99 Prayer
Our arithmetic, starting from level 30 (13,363 XP) and using the wiki's rates:
| Goal | Dragon bones (gilded) | Dragon bones (Chaos) | Superior dragon bones (gilded) | Hours, dragon bones gilded | Hours, superior gilded |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 43 | 147 | 73 | 70 | 0.1 | 0.03 |
| 70 | 2,874 | 1,437 | 1,380 | 1.1 | 0.5 |
| 77 | 5,802 | 2,901 | 2,785 | 2.3 | 1.1 |
| 99 | 51,671 | 25,835 | 24,802 | 20.3 | 9.7 |
Superior dragon bones need 70 Prayer to offer (Theoatrix), so from 70 to 99 they take about 23,400 bones and 9.2 hours at a gilded altar.
A rule for choosing: the wiki's efficiency section says to compare the coins you'd spend to save an hour with what you earn per hour. Faster bones are only worth it if your best money maker earns more per hour than the extra cost. Our money making guide can help you estimate that.
Passive and side Prayer methods
| Method | How it works (Theoatrix, OSRS Wiki) |
|---|---|
| Bonecrusher | Hard Morytania Diary reward; crushes bones you kill for half their XP, or the full amount with the elite Morytania Diary (OSRS Wiki) |
| Ectofuntus | Four times the buried XP per bone. Slower than an altar, but steady; the ectophial from Ghosts Ahoy makes trips quick |
| Ash sanctifier | Scatters demonic ashes automatically for XP |
| Ectoplasmator | Soul Wars reward; XP from spectral creatures like Ankous and Barrows brothers |
| Ensouled heads | About 343,000 XP per hour with ensouled dragon heads, also trains Magic |
| Sinister and Demonic Offering | Arceuus spells; Theoatrix says only cast Demonic Offering on ashes |
| Cremating urium remains | 35,000–57,000 XP per hour; the fastest way to get zealot's robes |
The bonecrusher is "very useful on your journey to 99 Slayer" (Theoatrix). The OSRS Slayer guide covers task picks.
Zealot's robes: each piece gives a 1.25% chance to save most remains. The wiki estimates about 648 urium remains at 95 Firemaking for the full set, which saves about 5% of your bone costs.
OSRS Prayer training for free-to-play players
Free-to-play accounts have no XP-boosting altar, so Prayer comes from burying bones and scattering ashes. The OSRS Wiki's free-to-play training page gives these rates:
| Method | XP each | XP per hour (OSRS Wiki) |
|---|---|---|
| Bones | 4.5 | About 13,000 |
| Big bones | 15 | About 43,500 |
| Vile ashes (lesser and greater demons) | 25 | About 72,500 |
| Big bones and vile ashes together | 40 per tick | About 100,000 realistically |
The Restless Ghost (1,125 XP) is the only free-to-play quest with Prayer XP. The three protection prayers by 43 are reachable in free-to-play; Piety, Rigour and Augury are members-only prayers.
Plan for alts and returning players
- Pures and alts: stop at 43 or 52 depending on your build. 73 dragon bones at the Chaos altar get you from 30 to 43 (our math).
- Returning players: the libation bowl arrived with Varlamore. If you left before then, it's now the no-risk alternative to the gilded altar (Theoatrix).
- Ironmen: use the libation bowl from 30 and the Chaos altar with dragon bones from 60, according to RSGoals. Hardcore ironmen should avoid the Chaos altar.
- Mains on a budget: use the Chaos altar for most of the XP and a gilded altar for the last levels if you'd rather not risk the Wilderness late on.
