THE GUIDE

Quick summary

  • What it is: a four-boss Battle for Azeroth dungeon in northern Vol'dun, back in the Midnight Season 2 Mythic+ pool. The bosses are Adderis and Aspix, Merektha, Galvazzt, and the Avatar of Sethraliss (Wowhead).
  • Timer: 33:00 (Wowhead); TheWoWDB lists 32:00.
  • Galvazzt is the key check: someone must stand between every Lightning Spire and the boss. If he reaches full energy, Method says the result "likely leads to a wipe."
  • The last boss is a healing fight: kill the Essence Defilers, soak the Corrupted Lifeforce orbs, then protect your healer from fixating adds while they heal the Avatar (Method, TheWoWDB).
  • Blizzard reworked the Avatar on August 18, cutting its passive healing and giving more time to soak orbs. Guides and videos from before that date show the old fight.

Clear the opening trash

Mob Key ability What to do Source
Storm Adept Lightning Bolt Kick it Method, TheWoWDB
Sandswept Hunter Arrow Barrage (channel), Sandburst Arrow Stun or CC the channel; dodge the circle Method, Icy Veins
Barbed Krolusk Serrated Charge Bleed cleanse or defensive Method, Icy Veins
Shrouded Fang Starts in stealth; Poisoned Cheap Shot; Slither Strike Kick the Cheap Shot or poison-dispel the stun Method
Sandfury Stonefist Ground Pound, Sunder Slam CC-immune; tank defensive; respect the knockback Method, TheWoWDB

Method says Shrouded Fangs usually sit near a neutral Rogue Krolusk. On September 22, Blizzard fixed a bug that let the Fang's Slither Strike go off while it was crowd-controlled, so stuns now stop it properly.

Beat Adderis and Aspix

  • Storm Blessed: one twin is immune at a time. It starts on Aspix and passes to the other when one twin reaches 40% health (Method, TheWoWDB). Hit the twin without the shield.
  • Gale Force: a line on every player, then a strong knockback. Spread loosely and back up to a wall if you can't cancel knockbacks (Method). Wowhead warns that a group soak follows right after.
  • Thunder and Lightning: that soak. Collapse into melee so the whole group splits the damage (Method, Icy Veins).
  • Tempest Winds: 2 players drop wind puddles. Move out of the group first.
  • Overload: Adderis's melee hits get dangerous; tanks use a defensive.
  • Frenzy: after Adderis dies, Aspix casts Gust, Gale Force, and Tempest Winds more often. TheWoWDB suggests saving a group cooldown for it.

Cross the bridge and beat Merektha

The bridge after the twins is "full of swirlies" to dodge (Method). Then the Merektha trash:

Mob Key ability What to do Source
Sand-Sworn Rider Scouring Sand, Swarming Krolusks CC-immune; kill it fast; stay close to dodge the frontal Icy Veins, Method
Poisonous Viper Cytotoxin Poison dispel Method, Icy Veins
Lightning Serpent Serpent's Stormcall Tank defensive; move away Method, Icy Veins
Brood Tender Venom Bolt Spare kicks TheWoWDB
Faithless Subjugator Addle Mind (disorient) Kick or curse-dispel every cast Method, Icy Veins

On August 25, Blizzard replaced one Faithless Subjugator with a Lightning Serpent and changed the forces count so routes stay the same. Swarming Krolusks also wait longer after spawning before they attack.

Merektha:

  1. Lightning Bite: a defensive for every cast.
  2. A Knot of Snakes: wraps 2 players. Wowhead says a blue arrow shows who will be stunned, so group up and use AoE CC. Then cleave the snakes.
  3. Thunder Spit: drop your circles at the edge of the room. Since August 18, the Lingering Storm debuffs no longer stack on top of each other (Blizzard).
  4. Serpentstorm: group damage that can knock you into pools. Healers plan a cooldown (Method, Icy Veins).
  5. Hatch and Burrow: at full energy she summons 3 Toxic Vipers and a Storm Serpent, then stays underground until they die. Dodge her charges, which stun. Kick the vipers' Poison Spit. Park the Storm Serpent near old pools or the room's edge, because it leaves a new pool (Method, TheWoWDB).

Beat Galvazzt

First comes a Loose Spark gauntlet: lightning orbs spiral across the hall, and they stun. Dodge through and kill the nearby Spark Channeler, which stops more orbs from spawning (Method, TheWoWDB).

Mob Key ability What to do Source
Agitated Nimbus Accumulate Charge, Release Charge Purge the stacks; defensive for the release Method, Icy Veins
Imbued Stormcaller Imbued Conduction, Lightning Bolt Dispel every Conduction; kick the bolt Method, TheWoWDB
Static Anomaly Spark Step Spread out loosely Method, Icy Veins

Galvazzt:

  • Lightning Spires: they spawn in sets of 3. Method says a non-tank player "quickly steps between them and the boss" to stop him gaining energy. Rotate defensives and healer cooldowns, because the beams deal steady damage.
  • Consume Charge: cast at full energy. Method says it "likely leads to a wipe"; TheWoWDB says to "assume a wipe."
  • Induction: group damage that leaves a puddle. The tank moves the boss to make the next spires easier to reach (Method). Icy Veins suggests a health potion if you're low.

On August 27, Blizzard fixed a bug where the Voidbound Emissary from the Xal'atath's Bargain affix could make Galvazzt despawn. That affix is described in our Season 2 Mythic+ guide.

Open the Eyes of Sethraliss

After a second Loose Spark gauntlet, you reach a big room. To open the way, a player clicks each of the two Eyes of Sethraliss. They take ticking damage while its bar fills, and new mobs spawn (Method, TheWoWDB).

Mob What it does Answer Source
Faithless Conscript Hits the tank; worth no forces Leave them Method, TheWoWDB
Temple Disruptor Essence Disruption channel into the nearest Eye Kick or CC it Method, Wowhead
Orb Watcher Attacks the Eye area Tank it away from the Eye Icy Veins, TheWoWDB
Twisted Hexxer Flame Shock, Latent Hex Kick the shock; drop the hex at the room's edge Method

Wowhead says Temple Disruptors only channel while an Eye is active, so CC them and finish the orb.

Win the Avatar of Sethraliss healing fight

This is a healing fight. Your healer can't heal the Avatar while the Essence Defilers' Defiling Taint is on her (Wowhead). TheWoWDB says not to waste mana until they're dead.

  1. Kill the Essence Defilers first. Since August 18, Defiling Taint shows on the Avatar's unit frame (Blizzard).
  2. Corrupted Guardian: use a defensive if it targets you with Vile Charge. Tanks need a defensive for Tainted Strike. Icy Veins says to park it in a corner. When it dies, it hits everyone within 20 yards and leaves 3 Corrupted Lifeforce soaks that explode after 6 seconds (Method).
  3. Soak the orbs: each soak applies Corruption, a physical damage vulnerability. DPS players or a tank with a defensive ready should take them.
  4. Heal the Avatar: once the Defilers are down, the healer heals her while waves of Faithless Tormentors spawn for about 30 seconds and fixate a random player, preferring the healer. Their melee hits stack Shadowlash. Kite them to the group to be stunned and cleaved. Each one that dies heals the Avatar for about 0.7% (Method, TheWoWDB).

August 18 rework: soak time is 6 seconds (was 4.5); Corruption's vulnerability is 250% (was 300%), but its damage over time is 33% higher; Tainted Strike's damage over time is halved and capped at 2 stacks; the passive Cleansed Lifeforce aura caps at 3 stacks and ticks every 3 seconds (was 2). Blizzard's notes say the goal was to make "player healing more impactful." On August 20, Blizzard fixed the progress bar reaching 100% while the Avatar was at 99%.

Healers wondering which spec handles this best can check our healer and tank tier list, which is written for raids.

Trinkets (Wowhead): Merektha's Fang (Merektha), Tiny Electromental in a Jar (Galvazzt), and Sethraliss' Defiled Relic (Avatar). End-of-run item levels by key are in our Season 2 Mythic+ guide.

Achievements (Icy Veins): a Mythic kill of the Avatar, and Keystone Hero: Temple of Sethraliss for timing a +10, which gives the teleport. Track them on our achievements page.

Avoid the common mistakes

  • Hitting the shielded twin. Damage into Storm Blessed is wasted (TheWoWDB).
  • Getting knocked off by Gale Force and missing the soak that follows.
  • Leaving a spire unsoaked. One full-energy Galvazzt can end the key.
  • Fighting the Faithless Conscripts. They're worth no forces.
  • Healing the Avatar too early. Kill the Defilers first.
  • Letting Tormentors reach the healer. Stun and cleave them as they come.

Run it on alts or after a break

  • Returning for 12.1.5: the Avatar fight changed on August 18, and the Subjugator swap came on August 25. Watch footage from after those dates. From October 20, +10 runs drop Venomstones (Blizzard, via our Season 2 Mythic+ guide).
  • Alts: each character times its own +10 for the teleport (Icy Veins). Healers on alts should practice the Avatar on lower keys first.
  • Pushing: see our push guide. Our Kings' Rest guide covers another legacy dungeon in the pool.
