Diablo 4 Season 15 Leveling Guide: Fastest 1–70 Route and Builds
Diablo 4 Season 15 leveling: a level-by-level 1–70 route, Undercity vs Helltide after the 3.2.1 XP changes, leveling builds for all 8 classes.

In this guide 13 sections
Quick summary
- Season 15 (Season of Hell's Legacy) launched September 15, 2026 with patch 3.2.1. The current patch is 3.2.2 (live since September 30, with hotfixes on October 2 and 6). The level cap is 70, and Paragon starts after that.
- The route: start a Helltide-heavy War Plan in Temis, then at level 25 commit to either the Kurast Undercity with Jade Epiphany or Helltide maggots (Hellmouth → Writhe and Rot) (D4Guides.gg).
- What 3.2.1 changed: Jade Epiphany's XP orbs were doubled, Helltide maggot orbs were cut, War Plan reward nodes were buffed (the base completion increase applies in Torment X and above), and Whisper caches now drop 4–6 orbs instead of 3–5 (from Blizzard's patch notes). Undercity is now the fastest pure-XP route.
- Don't skip Season Rank: Capstone Dungeons around levels 30–40 and 50–60 give skill points, and Pit access is tied to Season Rank objectives.
- At 70: clear Pit Tier 10 to unlock Torment 1.

| Level | What to do | Goal | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before you start | New seasonal character or Rebirth. Campaign skip if available. Start on Normal | A level 1 seasonal character | D4Guides |
| 1–14 | Temis: start a Helltide-heavy War Plan, recruit your Mercenary, activate your Pet, start the Deckard Cain seasonal quest | First War Plan points | D4Guides |
| ~10 | Check Tempering. Add a Lucky Hit / Elemental Surge temper to your weapon if your build supports it | Cheap damage | ConsolePulse |
| 15–24 | Unlock your class mechanic (class quest if needed). Keep doing Helltide steps and Whispers | Level 25 | D4Guides |
| 25+ | Pick Undercity (Jade Epiphany) or Helltide (Hellmouth → Writhe and Rot) | Repeatable XP | D4Guides |
| 30–40 | First Capstone Dungeon through Season Rank (often near 35) | Skill points | D4Guides |
| 50–60 | Second Capstone and the Pit-unlock rank objectives | Pit access and more skill points | D4Guides |
| Up to 70 | Repeat your XP loop. Update your weapon when damage drops | Level 70 | D4Guides |
| 70, early Paragon | Replace gear with level 70 drops, Temper, add key Aspects, Paragon toward your first Legendary node (benchmark: 25–40 points) | Pit Tier 10 → Torment 1 | D4Guides |
The level ranges are checkpoints, not requirements. If a Capstone is too hard, keep leveling and come back.
Start right: new character or Rebirth
- New seasonal character: the standard start.
- Rebirth: brings an Eternal Realm character into the season at level 1. It keeps class, name, and appearance, but not gear or power. Move everything equipped and in your inventory to your Eternal Stash first, because it doesn't carry over (D4Guides). There's no XP advantage.
- Campaign: if you haven't finished it on your account, do that first, then join this route.
Pick a difficulty
Expert and Penitent unlock after the Prologue (ConsolePulse).
| Situation | Difficulty |
|---|---|
| Fresh character, levels 1–25 | Normal |
| Packs die instantly and you aren't dying | Try Hard |
| Opening a War Plan Helltide chest | Only if you can survive |
| Level 70 with leveling gear | Penitent, then Pit 10 |
Rule from every source: a higher difficulty only pays if your clear speed holds.
Levels 1–24: set up War Plans
- Travel to Temis and start your first War Plan. Choose one with several Helltide activities, and reroll if needed (D4Guides).
- Recruit your Mercenary and check the Horadric Cube.
- Activate your Pet for gold and materials, but pick up XP orbs yourself.
- Follow the seasonal questline, which starts with Deckard Cain's lost soul.
- In Helltides, kill dense packs, collect Aberrant Cinders, and fully complete the War Plan objective shown. A random chest isn't always enough.
- Grab Whispers on your path. Turn in at 10 Grim Favors. Each PvP-zone roaming boss (Fields of Hatred near Alzuuda in the Dry Steppes and Denshar in Kehjistan) gives 5 Grim Favors when its Whisper is active, so the pair makes one turn-in. Hardcore players should skip PvP zones.
Level 25: choose your main route
| Route | Key nodes | How it works | Pros | Cons | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Undercity | Jade Epiphany | Gaining Attunement ranks spawns XP orbs: 2 / 4 / 6 / 8 at ranks 1–4 after the 3.2.1 doubling. Reach rank 4, kill the boss, repeat | Fastest pure XP. Steady, repeatable pace | Little gear. Your weapon can fall behind | Speed to 70, alts |
| Helltide | Hellmouth, then Writhe and Rot | Build Threat, kill Hellwyrms, kill the maggots for XP orbs | XP plus gear, materials, Whispers, and War Plan progress | Maggot orbs nerfed in 3.2.1. Depends on spawns | First character of the season |
| Full War Plans | Mixed | Run whatever plan you roll | Variety. War Plan XP was increased | Long activities slow pure leveling | Players who dislike repetition |
Unlock costs (D4Guides benchmarks): about 4 Undercity activity completions for the first point toward Jade Epiphany. 4 Helltide steps for Hellmouth, then 10 more for Writhe and Rot. These are activity steps, not full War Plans. Check the tree in game.
Seasonal bonus: carrying Baal's Splinter of Destruction boosts Jade Epiphany from rank 4 of its reputation track: +50% XP orbs and +1 Monster Power (D4Guides).
Example: you want 70 fast on an alt. Run War Plans to 25, rush four Undercity completions without farming Attunement, put the point into Jade Epiphany, then loop: beacons → rank 4 → boss → reset. Check a vendor for a weapon every few levels.
Undercity loop
- Before Jade Epiphany, rush completions. Don't farm Attunement yet.
- After, activate Beacons (Spirit Braziers) and kill packs to raise Attunement.
- Pick up the orbs at each rank yourself.
- At rank 4, go straight to the boss.
Helltide loop
- Spend points on Hellmouth, then Writhe and Rot.
- Build Threat by fighting, then look for Hellwyrms at higher Threat.
- Ride between known spawn points (Helltides.com has a map, per D4Guides).
- Kill the maggots and collect their orbs. Open useful chests before your Cinders expire.
- Do Whispers inside the Helltide, which now pay 4–6 orbs per cache.
When to switch routes
- Undercity is fast: stay until 70.
- You fail the Undercity timer or boss: fix your weapon or drop a difficulty. Fill gear gaps with Helltides or vendors.
- Few maggots: check your nodes, Threat, and route first.
- Helltide works: keep it. Building the other tree from scratch costs time.
Stack XP bonuses
| Bonus | Effect | Catch | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Splinter of Lies | +25% XP, plus Gold and Material Find | Permanently Weakened and Vulnerable | D4Guides |
| Splinter of Damnation | +25% XP and +1 Monster Power briefly after each elite pack | Short duration | D4Guides |
| Experience Elixir | Bonus XP if you meet its level | Not worth a long material hunt | D4Guides |
Use the Splinter of Lies only if the extra danger doesn't slow you down, and never on Hardcore unless you're very confident.
Levels 30–70: Season Rank, Capstones, and the Pit
- Open Season Rank at every town stop. It lists your missing objectives and lets you track each Capstone Dungeon on the map.
- First Capstone at about 30–40, second at about 50–60 (D4Guides). ConsolePulse says Season 15 asks you to clear Hellish Descent on Penitent for Pit access.
- Capstones have fixed difficulty. Going in early doesn't scale enemies down (ConsolePulse).
- The Pit unlock is a Season Rank objective, not just a level. Finish it before 70 if you can.
- Spend skill points right away and claim rank rewards.
Town-stop checklist
- Whispers full? Turn in.
- War Plan reward ready? Claim it and start the next plan.
- Season Rank: any Capstone or rank reward pending?
- Skill or Paragon points to spend?
- Gear: equip clear upgrades and sell in bulk.
- Elixir, Mercenary, and seasonal bonuses still active?
Use a leveling build for your class
| Class | D4Guides (S15) |
|---|---|
| Barbarian | Whirlwind |
| Druid | Storm Shred |
| Necromancer | Minionmancer |
| Paladin | Hammerdin |
| Rogue | Dance of Knives |
| Sorcerer | Blizzard Static Field |
| Spiritborn | Stinger |
| Warlock | Blazing Scream |
Avoid common mistakes
The one mistake every source agrees on: forcing a higher difficulty before your clear speed holds, because slower kills cancel the XP bonus. Stay on Normal until the route above feels effortless.
At 70: unlock Torment 1
- Check Season Rank: finish both Capstones and confirm Pit access.
- Farm safely, ideally on Penitent (D4Guides).
- Replace leveling gear with level 70 drops (ConsolePulse suggests useful 850 Item Power pieces), vendor or Obol buys, and Blacksmith recipes.
- Temper what you'll keep, add essential Aspects, and use Runewords if you have the runes.
- Spend Paragon toward your first useful Legendary node (about 25–40 points, per D4Guides).
- Clear Pit Tier 10. If you fail, fix the one weakness that stopped you and retry.
Our Nightmare Dungeons vs. the Pit guide covers the next steps, and the Paragon 300 guide covers the longer season push.
Alts, no-expansion players, Hardcore, and returning players
- Alts: Season 15 shares War Plan reputation across characters in the same partition (Seasonal or Eternal, Hardcore or not, SSF or not). Each character still has its own planner, so an alt can go straight to the route it wants (D4Guides).
- Without Lord of Hatred: War Plans are expansion content. Without them, use Helltides, Whispers, Nightmare Dungeons, and the campaign (ConsolePulse). D4Guides reports that about 15% of seasonal objectives, including some Season Rank steps, need the expansion.
- Hardcore: skip PvP-zone Whispers, big Hellwyrms on weak gear, and the Splinter of Lies. Strongholds are optional detours, so skip unsafe ones.
- Returning from Season 14: the old "maggots only" farm is weaker, and Undercity is stronger. Older leveling times aren't a reliable benchmark.

Frequently asked questions
What is the fastest way to level in Diablo 4 Season 15?
Run Helltide War Plans to level 25, unlock Jade Epiphany, then loop the Kurast Undercity to Attunement rank 4. Patch 3.2.1 doubled its XP orbs. For a first character, Helltide with Writhe and Rot gives more gear along the way.
Was Helltide leveling nerfed in Season 15?
Yes. Patch 3.2.1 cut the maggots' XP orbs; Whisper caches, War Plan rewards and Jade Epiphany were buffed instead.
How many XP orbs does Jade Epiphany give?
Carrying the Splinter of Destruction adds 50% more orbs from rank 4 of its track (D4Guides).
When should I do the Capstone Dungeons?
Around levels 30–40 for the first and 50–60 for the second. They give skill points, and the second is part of the Pit unlock.
How do I unlock Torment 1 in Season 15?
Reach 70, complete the Season Rank objectives that unlock the Pit, then clear Pit Tier 10.
What difficulty should I level on?
Normal at first. Move up to Hard, Expert, or Penitent only when packs still die quickly.
What is Rebirth in Diablo 4 Season 15?
An option that brings an Eternal Realm character into the season at level 1, keeping its class, name, and appearance but not its gear or power. Move your items to the Eternal Stash first.
Do I need Lord of Hatred to level in Season 15?
No, but War Plans, and so this route's key nodes, need the expansion. Some Season Rank objectives do too.
