OSRS Runecrafting Guide 1-99 (2026): Lavas, GotR, ZMI, Bloods
OSRS Runecrafting guide 1-99: quest skip to 32, lavas, Guardians of the Rift, ZMI with daeyalt, blood and soul runes, aethers and F2P routes compared.

In this guide 14 sections
Quick summary
- Skip the start with quests. Client of Kourend, The Ascent of Arceuus, Enter the Abyss, Temple of the Eye, The Eyes of Glouphrie and The Slug Menace take you from 1 to 32 (OSRS Wiki).
- Fastest solo XP: lava runes from 23. The wiki lists about 52,000 XP/h at 25 rising to about 102,000 at 99 with Magic Imbue and good pouches.
- Best all-rounder: Guardians of the Rift from 27. It's slower than lavas but gives the colossal pouch and the Raiments of the Eye that every later method uses.
- Low effort: Ourania Altar (ZMI) at any level, or blood runes from 77 and soul runes from 90 in Arceuus.
- Getting 99 needs 13,034,431 XP. The hour estimates below are our arithmetic from the wiki's rates, not wiki figures.
Runecrafting is slow, so the useful question isn't "what's fastest" but which trade-off you want: XP, effort or profit. This OSRS Runecrafting guide answers that with a route for each, then gives the steps. XP rates are the OSRS Wiki's, from its Runecraft training page, and the guide covers Old School RuneScape only.
Pick a Runecrafting route to 99
| Your goal | Route | Rough hours 27–99 (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|
| Fastest solo | Quests → lavas with Magic Imbue to 99 (aethers from 90 are an option) | About 135 h |
| Balanced XP and unlocks | Quests → Guardians of the Rift to 99 | About 215 h |
| GotR, then low effort | GotR to 77 → blood runes to 90 → soul runes to 99 | About 320 h |
| Lower effort, still profitable | Quests → Ourania Altar (ZMI) with pure essence | About 185 h |
| ZMI with daeyalt | Same, using daeyalt essence from about 50 | About 125 h of crafting from 50, plus mining time |
| Free-to-play | Air, earth and fire to 20 → body runes to 99 | About 650 h |
We worked out each figure by dividing the XP between levels by the average of the wiki's rates at each end of the range. For lavas that's 1.6 h for 27–50, 15.2 h for 50–75, 22.7 h for 75–85 and 96.4 h for 85–99. The hours leave out breaks and banking mistakes, and they'll run longer while you learn.
Example: you have 45 Magic and no Lunar Diplomacy. Lavas still work with talismans (the wiki's non-Lunar table runs from 42,400 XP/h at 23 to 96,000 at 99). But Guardians of the Rift gets you the colossal pouch and outfit while you work on the Magic and quest requirements, so many players start there and switch later.
Runecrafting unlocks and quests, in order
- Rune Mysteries. It's the prerequisite for the rest.
- Enter the Abyss (miniquest): 1,000 XP, the small pouch, and later pouch repairs (OSRS Wiki).
- Temple of the Eye at 10 Runecraft: 9,210 XP across the quest, the medium pouch and access to Guardians of the Rift.
- Lost City, Troll Stronghold, Mourning's End Part II and Sins of the Father. They let you craft cosmic, law, death and blood runes in GotR.
- Lunar Diplomacy (5,000 XP) and 82 Magic for Magic Imbue and Astral Contact. 71 Magic is enough for Ourania Teleport.
- Sins of the Father and 60 Mining for daeyalt essence (+50% XP per essence).
- Dragon Slayer II for wrath runes at 95.
Quests that give Runecrafting XP
The wiki's quest table lists 99,000 Runecraft XP in total from these quests:
| Quest | XP | Runecraft requirement |
|---|---|---|
| The Ascent of Arceuus | 500 | None |
| Enter the Abyss | 1,000 | None |
| The Slug Menace | 3,500 | 30 |
| Devious Minds | 5,000 | 50 |
| Lunar Diplomacy | 5,000 | None |
| Perilous Moons | 5,000 | 20 |
| Temple of the Eye | 5,000 (reward) | 10 |
| Fallen From Grace | 5,000 | 47 |
| The Eyes of Glouphrie | 6,000 | None |
| What Lies Below | 8,000 | 35 |
| The Final Dawn | 25,000 | 52 |
| The Fremennik Exiles | 30,000 | 55 |
Temple of the Eye's 5,000 is the end reward. The training page's 9,210 includes XP earned during the quest. Client of Kourend's lamps aren't in this table because you choose the skill for them.
Levels 1–32: the Runecrafting quest skip
The wiki's quest order:
| Levels | Quest | Other requirements |
|---|---|---|
| 1–9 | Client of Kourend | X Marks the Spot. Use both lamps on Runecraft |
| 9–11 | The Ascent of Arceuus | 12 Hunter |
| 11–15 | Enter the Abyss | Rune Mysteries |
| 15–24 | Temple of the Eye | None |
| 24–30 | The Eyes of Glouphrie | The Grand Tree, 46 Magic, 5 Construction |
| 30–32 | The Slug Menace | Wanted!, 30 Thieving, 30 Slayer, 30 Crafting |
At 32 the wiki suggests training to 35 and doing What Lies Below for 8,000 XP. If you're missing The Eyes of Glouphrie, the first four quests still take you to about 24 on the wiki's order, a few levels short of the 27 you need for Guardians of the Rift.
Rich and in a hurry? Talisman tiaras are one of the fastest methods to 50 with no requirements, but the wiki calls them click-intensive and potentially very expensive.
Runecrafting gear: pouches, outfit and upgrades
| Upgrade | What it does | Where from |
|---|---|---|
| Essence pouches | Small 3 (lvl 1), medium 6 (25), large 9 (50), giant 12 (75) | Quests, then Abyss creatures in order |
| Colossal pouch | Holds 40 essence. Needs 25 Runecraft and 56 Crafting to stitch the four pouches | Abyssal needle from GotR |
| Raiments of the Eye | 10% more runes per piece plus a 20% set bonus, 60% in total. No extra XP | GotR |
| Redwood abyssal lantern | Stops pouch decay and adds 5% runes. Needs 90 Firemaking | GotR lantern lit with redwood logs |
| Rune pouch | Stores three rune types (divine version: four) | Rune pouch note on the GE |
| Ring of endurance | Less run drain, longer stamina effect | Charged with stamina potions |
| Binding necklace | 100% combination-rune success | Crafting or GE |
| Abyssal needle | Lets you stitch the colossal pouch | 1/300 from the GotR Rewards Guardian, or 750 abyssal pearls |
| Runecraft cape | Works as every talisman and tiara and stops pouches from degrading | Aubury in Varrock, 99,000 coins at 99 |
Pouches above small wear out. The wiki lists 45 uses for medium, 29 for large, 10 for giant and 8 for colossal before decay, so you'll repair them with Astral Contact, the Dark Mage in the Abyss, or Apprentice Cordelia for abyssal pearls.
Upgrade order that works for most players: medium pouch from the quest → GotR until the needle and full outfit → large and giant pouches as levels allow → colossal pouch → lantern if you have 90 Firemaking.
Fastest Runecrafting XP: lava runes (23–99)
Lava runes are earth runes plus essence at the Fire Altar. The wiki's setup:
- Wear the Raiments of the Eye and the Hat of the Eye attuned to a fire or elemental tiara (or a plain fire tiara).
- Equip a binding necklace, a ring of the elements for the altar and a Crafting cape or amulet of eternal glory for the bank. With 67 Sailing, the sailors' amulet to Deepfin Point works too.
- Carry all pouches, a stack of earth runes and pure essence. Bank stamina potions with vial smashing on.
- With Lunar: a steam battlestaff and a rune pouch for Magic Imbue and Astral Contact. Cast Astral Contact after clicking the ruins, not at the bank.
- Without Lunar: 1–3 earth talismans per trip and a way to get pouches repaired.
| Level | Pouches | Essence per lap | XP/h with Magic Imbue | XP/h without |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 23 | None | 24 | 43,200 | 42,400 |
| 25 | Small + medium | 31 / 30 | 51,400 | 47,200 |
| 50 | Small + medium + large | 39 / 38 | 62,900 | 57,300 |
| 50 | Colossal | 39 / 38 | 65,700 | 58,400 |
| 75 | Colossal | 50 / 48 | 80,000 | 67,300 |
| 85 | Colossal | 63 / 61 | 100,800 | 81,100 |
| 99 | Colossal | 63 / 61 | 102,100 | 96,000 |
All rates are from the OSRS Wiki. It notes that maximum theoretical rates are about 9–12% higher, and up to 113,000 XP/h is possible at 85. Lavas lose money per XP at low levels and are roughly break-even or better at high levels with the outfit, depending on prices.
Essence runners are faster again (the wiki lists 280,000 XP/h with four runners at the Fire Altar). The wiki also warns that runner services have "considerable potential" links to real-world trading and that paying an RWT seller can get the account permanently banned. Use your own alts or skip it.
Guardians of the Rift XP and rewards (27–99)
You mine guardian fragments, craft guardian essence into runes at the active altars and power the Great Guardian. You also get passive Mining and Crafting XP, a small boost toward the OSRS Mining guide and OSRS Crafting guide goals.
| Runecraft level | Runecraft XP/h | Crafting XP/h | Mining XP/h |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40–50 | 25,000 | 2,300 | 1,200 |
| 50–75 | 40,000 | 3,700 | 2,000 |
| 75–85 | 50,000 | 4,700 | 2,500 |
| 85–98 | 65,000 | 6,200 | 3,200 |
| 99 | 70,000 | 6,600 | 3,500 |
From 85 the wiki's rates assume small, coordinated teams. Steps that raise your points and XP:
- Use your best pickaxe and every pouch, and keep a rune pouch for Astral Contact.
- Wear any Varrock armour until you have the outfit, for a 10% chance of double fragments.
- Light the abyssal lantern with redwood logs if you can. Use yew logs if you can't, or if you wear the Runecraft cape.
- Do the quests in step 4 of the unlock list so you can use the higher altars.
ZMI Runecrafting at the Ourania Altar
ZMI turns essence into a random mix of runes that improves with your level. You need Lunar Diplomacy and the Ourania Teleport (71 Magic strongly recommended). The official worlds are 327 and 480, and you pay Eniola 20 runes per bank visit (OSRS Wiki).
| Level | XP/h, pure essence | XP/h, daeyalt |
|---|---|---|
| 1–9 | 20,423 | 30,635 |
| 25–29 | 28,797 | 43,195 |
| 50–59 | 42,077 | 63,115 |
| 75–79 | 57,270 | 85,905 |
| 85–89 | 72,526 | 108,789 |
| 99 | 77,121 | 115,682 |
Steps: bank at Eniola → fill pouches → run south and east to the altar → craft → Ourania Teleport → climb down → bank. Turn off Auto Retaliate, hide the monsters' Attack option and wear some defence, because the cave's monsters hit you.
Should you use daeyalt? It gives 50% more XP per essence but you have to mine it. The wiki's worked example comes out at about 95% of the XP per hour you'd get with bought essence, counting mining time, but with a third of the time spent AFK mining.
AFK Runecrafting: blood and soul runes (77–99)
In Arceuus you mine dense essence, bless it at the Dark Altar, chisel it into fragments and craft at the Blood Altar (77) or Soul Altar (90). You need 38 Mining, 38 Crafting, a chisel and a pickaxe (any tier works).
| Level | Method | Runecraft XP/h | Crafting XP/h | Mining XP/h |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 77 | Blood runes | 36,000 | 5,755 | 4,211 |
| 90 | Soul runes | 44,000 | 5,666 | 4,146 |
Rates assume the medium Kourend & Kebos Diary and running (OSRS Wiki). The loop:
- Mine a full inventory of dense essence.
- Bless it at the Dark Altar.
- Chisel it into fragments while running back.
- Mine and bless a second inventory, then chisel one block.
- Craft at the altar, chisel the rest, and craft again.
From the furthest tile directly south of the Dark Altar you can click the Blood Altar directly. Higher Mining makes each rock last longer: about 6.9 mines at 38 Mining and 10.2 at 97, according to the wiki.
Runecrafting 90–99 and profit options
| Method | Level | What you need | Wiki rate or note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aether runes | 90 | Soul runes, aether catalyst, Magic Imbue, binding necklaces, fairy ring access, 66 Agility shortcut | Up to 104,000 XP/h at 99 at maximum efficiency |
| Double nature runes | 91 | Abyss, fairy ring CKR, Karamja gloves 3/4 or achievement diary cape | 91–99 takes 792,400 essence. The diary cape method is over twice as fast |
| Double law runes | 95 | Troll Stronghold, Teleport to Boat with a boat docked at Entrana (75 Sailing, 69 Construction, 67 Magic) | 95–99 takes 448,724 essence. No weapons or armour on Entrana |
| Wrath runes | 95 | Dragon Slayer II, dragonfire protection, mythical cape | 44,880 XP/h at 85 runs, about 95 hours from 95 to 99 |
| Double astral runes | 82 | Lunar Diplomacy | Up to 59,000 XP/h at 99. Docking a boat at Lunar Isle with 76 Sailing adds about 8,000 XP/h |
| Double cosmic runes | 59 | Lost City | Slow XP, profit depends on prices |
| Desiccated pages | 50 | Royal Titans in a duo, giving up loot | About 20,000 XP/h each, plus combat XP |
| Arceuus Library | 1 | None | 5 × your level per book, 150 books/h gives 74,250 XP/h at 99 |
Rune prices move, so check the Grand Exchange before choosing a profit method. We don't list gold-per-hour figures here; the OSRS money-making guide shows where Runecrafting sits against other earners.
Rift guardian pet. The pet rolls once per essence crafted, with better odds at the Arceuus blood and soul altars than at the Ourania Altar or elsewhere. Crafting runes inside Guardians of the Rift doesn't roll for it (OSRS Wiki).
F2P Runecrafting guide
| Levels | Rune | XP per essence | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–9 | Air | 5 | Air Altar south of Falador |
| 9–14 | Earth | 6.5 | North-east of Varrock |
| 14–20 | Fire | 7 | West of Emir's Arena |
| 20–99 | Body | 7.5 | Two runes per essence from 46, three from 92 |
The wiki's fastest F2P body-rune loop is about 20,000 XP/h: skull sceptre to Barbarian Village, craft, then Falador Teleport (or Lumbridge Teleport on PvP worlds). That's about 650 hours from 20 to 99 by our arithmetic. Body tiaras reach up to 47,000 XP/h, but the wiki's cost figures for 1–99 show a very large loss. Only take items to PvP worlds that you're willing to lose.
Adjust for ironmen, hardcores and returning players
- Ironmen: GotR is the backbone because it gives runes, the outfit and pouches with no trading. Blood and soul runes build stacks for PvM. Daeyalt suits ironmen who are mining their own essence anyway.
- Hardcore ironmen: the Abyss is reached through level 5 Wilderness, and the wiki calls Abyss routes more effort and risk. ZMI and wrath runes involve monsters that attack, so wear defence. GotR and Arceuus avoid both.
- Returning players: check for the colossal pouch, the redwood lantern and Sailing-era teleports (sailors' amulet, Teleport to Boat). Each changes the best route from what an older guide says, and the OSRS Sailing guide covers how to train the Sailing levels those routes need.
- Alts and pures: quests like The Eyes of Glouphrie need 46 Magic. Check combat-level goals before doing quests that give combat XP.
Runecrafting is often the last skill people level for a quest cape or diary; the Old School RuneScape hub lists the related guides and services. For the Agility shortcuts and run energy that help every essence route, see the OSRS Agility guide.

FAQ
What is the fastest way to get 99 Runecrafting in OSRS? Solo, it's quests to 32 and then lava runes with Magic Imbue and the colossal pouch, about 135 hours from 27 by our arithmetic. Aether runes from 90 are a similar-speed option.
Is Guardians of the Rift worth it? Yes, at least until you have the colossal pouch and Raiments of the Eye. Every profitable method uses them, and GotR gives Mining and Crafting XP too.
What is the most AFK Runecrafting method? Blood runes from 77 and soul runes from 90 in Arceuus. They're slower (36,000–44,000 XP/h on the wiki) but need far fewer clicks than lavas.
Is daeyalt essence worth using? It gives 50% more XP per essence. Counting the time to mine it, the wiki's example comes out at about 95% of the XP rate of bought essence, with less clicking.
Which quests give Runecrafting XP? Twelve quests give 99,000 XP in total, led by The Fremennik Exiles (30,000), The Final Dawn (25,000) and What Lies Below (8,000).
How do I train Runecrafting in F2P? Craft air, earth and fire runes to 20, then body runes to 99. Expect about 20,000 XP/h at best, which makes 20 to 99 roughly 650 hours.
