WoW Midnight Captain Tokka Guide: Cursed Fishing, Rep, Rewards
Captain Tokka guide for WoW Midnight 12.1: unlock Cursed Fishing, Cursed Surge times, every reputation rank, Coiled Filament for the Isle Serpent mount.
In this guide 12 sections
Quick summary
- Captain Tokka's crew is a fishing mini-faction on the Coiled Isle, added in Patch 12.1. It uses classic reputation ranks, not Renown. The top rank, Bloodsworn Crew, needs 8,400 reputation (Method).
- Cursed Fishing and Tokka reputation are separate. Cursed Fishing unlocks with the side quest "Venom Fishing: Shell of Yourself" and runs after each Cursed Surge. Tokka's rep starts with "Venom Fishing: Proof Is In The Ooze" (Wowhead, Method).
- The rep comes from the Tokka's Crew questline, two dailies on Tokka's Folly, the Open Sea Fishing world quest (500 rep), 10 one-time fished quest items (150 rep each, once per warband) and Master Grenadier Birdie spawns (50 rep) (Method, Wowhead).
- At Bloodsworn Crew, buy The Coiled Huntress rod for 6,000 Voidlight Marl. Its Coiled Isle catches add Venom stacks, which Seasage Polo cleanses into Coiled Filament. Filament buys the Sea-Dwelling Isle Serpent mount (2,500) and three weapon appearances.
- Curse Surges rotate every 30 minutes since Blizzard's September 15 hotfix; older guides still say 45.

Understand the three systems before you start
Many players blur three related systems together. They have different unlocks:
| System | What it is | Unlock | Main payoff | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cursed Surges | Rotating world events at 5 Coiled Isle sites, each ending in a boss | Available on the Coiled Isle; no Tokka rep needed | Daily satchel, gear, currency, weekly chest | Wowhead guide, Wowhead News |
| Cursed Fishing | Special fishing nodes at the surge site after the event ends | Side quest "Venom Fishing: Shell of Yourself" | Cursebound Globe, Neutralized Venom Clot | Wowhead guide |
| Captain Tokka reputation | Fishing mini-faction with 5 ranks and vendor rewards | "Venom Fishing: Proof Is In The Ooze" from Captain Tokka at (57.21, 48.63) | The Coiled Huntress rod, Isle Serpent mount, decor, recipes | Method, Wowhead |
Wowhead says the Tokka's Crew storyline opens after the Original Sin campaign. Method instead names the first quest and Tokka's coordinates without listing a campaign prerequisite. If Tokka has no quest for you, finish Original Sin first.
Unlock Cursed Fishing and the Tokka storyline
- Pick up "Venom Fishing: Shell of Yourself" on the Coiled Isle to unlock Cursed Fishing. After a surge boss dies, the site gets the "Cursed Fishing" and "Cursed Land and Waters" effects for 30 minutes (Wowhead guide). Wowhead News adds that Cursed Land and Waters lets you drain cursed and envenomated herb and ore nodes for the same two crafting materials, so gatherers should stay too. The same window lets you hunt six unique cursed fish for the Angler of The Coiled Isle achievement, which rewards a Sinful Pearl that recolors The Coiled Huntress underwater transformation.
- Talk to Captain Tokka at (57.21, 48.63) and take "Venom Fishing: Proof Is In The Ooze" (Method). The Tokka's Crew questline takes you to Doomed Sailor (100 rep) and unlocks Venom Fishing and Temple Fishing. Temple Fishing is fishing inside the Vaults of Atal'Utek (Wowhead guide).
- Finish "Venom Fishing: My Second-Best." Wowhead says this quest unlocks the repeatable quests on Tokka's Folly.
- Check the vendors. Second Mate Sluggs at (51.62, 49.84) sells the rank rewards. Navigator Otoola needs no rep and trades recipes and toys for starfish currencies (Pristine Polygon, Bulbous Benthos, Beached Asteroid) and Voidlight Marl (Wowhead guide).
You need Midnight Fishing trained to make good use of any of this. For profession pairings, see our Midnight professions guide and the WoW professions hub.
Run the Cursed Surge rotation
Wowhead lists five surge sites. Each has its own objective and boss:
| Site | Waypoint | Boss or headline | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Looming Mutagenitor | (26.7, 64.8) | Mutagenitor event | Fill the bar, then kill the boss | Wowhead guide |
| Mlurkkr Massacre | (71.2, 31.3) | Ss'akrithos | Only boss that drops Diver's Key Fragments | Wowhead guide, Wowhead News |
| Malformed Leviathan | (46.9, 62.2) | Leviathan event | Fill the bar, then kill the boss | Wowhead guide |
| Broodmother's Nest | (45.2, 28.6) | Vassti | Fill the bar, then kill the boss | Wowhead guide |
| Whispering Marsh | (67.6, 77.8) | Venom Lancer Ori'kassi | Fill the bar, then kill the boss | Wowhead guide |
How the rotation works, per Wowhead:
- One site is active at a time. Sites rotate every 30 minutes since the September 15 hotfix (it was 45), and the in-game Events menu shows the next one (Blizzard).
- Groups of 2–3 players clear surges comfortably. Solo play is possible but slower.
- Your first boss kill each day gives Voidlight Marl, Coffer Key Shards, a Warbound item level 266 Adventurer piece and a chance at the Ruby Writhe mount. At Zul'jarra's Forces rank 8, that piece upgrades to item level 279 on the Veteran track. Every repeat clear gives a Venom-Soaked Satchel with gold, Adventurer Mistcrest and more Marl (Wowhead News).
- The weekly quest "Turn Back the Surge" asks for 3 surges. It rewards a Venom-Covered Chest, 1,000 Zul'jarra reputation and a Spark of Tides. Zul'jarra is a Renown faction, so see our Renown guide.
Wowhead News adds that server hopping through group finder lets you find surges in progress on other realms. It also lists achievements: Turn the Surge (complete all five distinct surges) and Cursebreaker, a title for 300 completed surges.
Community reports (Wowhead comments, unverified by us): one commenter says the rotation dropped to 30 minutes starting September 15. Another says the Events menu timer shows your local time, not realm time. Trust the in-game Events menu over any fixed schedule.
Climb the Captain Tokka reputation ranks
Method lists five classic ranks. Here they are next to what each rank opens, based on Method's vendor table:
| Rank | Rep needed (Method) | Gap from previous | Key unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stranger | 0 | — | Questline start |
| Doomed Sailor | 100 | 100 | Yellowed Kelp Pile, Aged Tortollan Scroll Case, Recipe: Puffer Plate |
| Cursed Angler | 2,700 | 2,600 | Four Moxie recipes (150 profession Moxie each), Hanging Yellowed Kelp, Recipe: Coiled Stargorger Lure |
| Venom Trawler | 5,300 | 2,600 | Venom Elemental, Rustic Fishing Rack, Blue Tortollan Signpost, Eerie Bauble, Recipe: Feast Of Knowledge, Recipe: Tokka's Multi-Ward |
| Bloodsworn Crew | 8,400 | 3,100 | The Coiled Huntress, Traditional Tortollan Tent, Sea-Dwelling Isle Serpent, three Envenomed weapons |
The questline ends at Doomed Sailor, so 8,300 rep must come from repeatable and one-time sources.
Rep sources compared
| Source | Rep | Frequency | Requirement | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tokka's Crew questline | Brings you to Doomed Sailor | Once per character | Captain Tokka quest chain | Method |
| Dailies from Second Mate Sluggs and Brinedrinker Gills | Per quest (Method lists the sources, not a per-quest figure) | Daily | After "Venom Fishing: My Second-Best" | Method, Wowhead guide |
| Open Sea Fishing world quest | 500 | Weekly | Northeast of the Coiled Isle | Method |
| Fished quest items (10 total) | 150 each (1,500 total) | Once per warband | Treasures Of The Damned achievement tracks them | Method |
| Master Grenadier Birdie | 50 | Random spawn while fishing | — | Wowhead guide |
We don't publish a "days to Bloodsworn" estimate. None of our sources gives per-daily rep figures we could verify, and we won't invent one. Here's what we can say. The fished items give up to 1,500 one-time rep on your first character. Each Open Sea Fishing week gives 500. Dailies and Birdie spawns cover the rest.
Plan a weekly Tokka routine
This routine stacks the sourced activities so you rarely fish without a reason:
| Day or slot | Activity | Why | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Every day | Tokka's Folly dailies (Sluggs, Gills) | Main repeatable rep | Method |
| Every day | One Cursed Surge, then 30 minutes of Cursed Fishing at the site | Daily satchel, Cursebound Globe, Neutralized Venom Clot | Wowhead guide |
| Once a week | Open Sea Fishing world quest | 500 Tokka rep | Method |
| Once a week | Three surges for "Turn Back the Surge" | Venom-Covered Chest, 1,000 Zul'jarra rep, Spark of Tides | Wowhead guide |
| First character only | Fish up all 10 Treasures Of The Damned items | 1,500 rep, warband-limited | Method |
| Whenever it spawns | Kill Master Grenadier Birdie | 50 rep | Wowhead guide |
Put this alongside your vault and raid tasks in our Season 2 weekly checklist.
Farm Coiled Filament for the mount and weapons
Coiled Filament is the endgame currency of this faction. Wowhead explains the loop:
- Reach Bloodsworn Crew and buy The Coiled Huntress for 6,000 Voidlight Marl (Method).
- Fish anywhere on the Coiled Isle with the rod equipped. Each catch adds 1 Venom stack.
- Visit Seasage Polo to cleanse the stacks. Each stack converts to 1 Coiled Filament.
Filament budget
| Reward | Coiled Filament | Cumulative |
|---|---|---|
| Sea-Dwelling Isle Serpent (flying mount) | 2,500 | 2,500 |
| Envenomed Deathblade | 500 | 3,000 |
| Envenomed Gavel | 500 | 3,500 |
| Envenomed Game Ripper | 1,000 | 4,500 |
Our arithmetic from Method's prices: one catch makes one Filament. The mount alone takes 2,500 Coiled Isle catches with the rod, and the full set takes 4,500. Cursed Fishing pools don't add Filament beyond the normal +1 per catch in any of our sources, so fish wherever you catch fastest on the island. Wowhead doesn't say whether Venom stacks expire, so cleanse at Seasage Polo before logging off.
For other Season 2 mounts, see our mounts guide.
Buy the right rewards first
Method's vendor costs for Second Mate Sluggs (Voidlight Marl unless noted):
| Reward | Cost | Rank | Why it matters | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Coiled Huntress (fishing rod) | 6,000 Voidlight Marl | Bloodsworn Crew | Required for Coiled Filament | Method, Wowhead guide |
| Sea-Dwelling Isle Serpent | 2,500 Coiled Filament | Bloodsworn Crew | Flying mount | Method |
| Three Envenomed weapons | 500 / 1,000 / 500 Coiled Filament | Bloodsworn Crew | Transmog | Method |
| Housing decor (7 pieces) | 150–500 Voidlight Marl | Doomed Sailor to Bloodsworn Crew | Tortollan and kelp decor | Method |
| Four Marl recipes | 1,500 Voidlight Marl each | Doomed Sailor to Venom Trawler | Feast Of Knowledge, Puffer Plate, Coiled Stargorger Lure, Tokka's Multi-Ward | Method |
| Four Moxie recipes | 150 of the matching profession Moxie | Cursed Angler | Alluring Nostrum, Proudmoore Ship-In-A-Bottle, Mounted Moby, Opalescent Amani Peridot | Method |
| Eerie Lure; Shredded Bloomline and Glimmerline | 10 Marl; 10 Coiled Filament each | No rank | Fishing consumables | Method |
| Venom Elemental (companion) | 100 gold | Venom Trawler | Battle pet | Method |
Buying order: save at least 6,000 Marl for the rod before spending on decor. Every Filament reward depends on the rod. Decor lovers should check our housing guide for placement budgets. Players who want to sell surplus fish should see our Midnight gold farming routes.
Chase the Coiled Isle extras
- Ancient Amani Mask toy: Ss'akrithos (Mlurkkr Massacre surge) drops Diver's Key Fragments. Three make a Diver's Key, which opens the Sunken Diver's Chest for the toy (Wowhead guide; Wowhead News says Ss'akrithos is the only surge boss with fragments).
- Ruby Writhe and Topaz Skyfang: random mount drops from Coiled Isle rare elites (Wowhead guide). Wowhead News also ties a Ruby Writhe chance to the first surge boss kill each day. We have no drop-rate source.
- Surge achievements: Turn the Surge for all five sites, and Cursebreaker for 300 surges, which gives a title (Wowhead News).
- Navigator Otoola: starfish-currency vendor with toys and recipes, no rep needed (Wowhead guide).
Compare the fastest routes to Bloodsworn Crew
| Route | Best for | Strength | Weakness | Source basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dailies + weekly WQ only | Casual players | Low time per day | Slowest; dailies carry most of the 8,300 rep | Method |
| Dailies + surges + Cursed Fishing | Most players | Stacks rep, satchels, Zul'jarra rep and fishing loot | Needs the surge timer | Wowhead guide, Method |
| Surge-hopping across realms | Achievement and toy hunters | More surges per session | Doesn't speed Tokka rep directly; time-heavy | Wowhead News |
| First-character treasure sweep | Your main | 1,500 rep at once | Once per warband | Method |
Alts and returning players
- Alts: The 10 Treasures Of The Damned items are once per warband (Method), so your first character gets that 1,500 rep and alts don't. Plan to max one fisher. Method doesn't say rep is warband-wide, so treat alts as starting from zero.
- Returning players: If you stopped after Original Sin, Tokka's storyline should be waiting (Wowhead). If you skipped the campaign, do it first. Cursed Surges need no rep, so you can join surges right away while unlocking Tokka.
- Gatherers: During the Cursed Land and Waters window after each surge, you can drain cursed herb and ore nodes for Cursebound Globe and Neutralized Venom Clot (Wowhead News). An herbalist or miner gets value from every surge even without fishing.
