THE GUIDE

The best WoW Midnight addons for Season 2 are fewer than they used to be. Since patch 12.0, Blizzard's Secret Values system blocks addons from making combat decisions, and the default UI now covers boss timers, a damage meter and cooldown tracking. This guide covers what still works on patch 12.1.5, the native tools to turn on first, a core stack everyone needs, quality-of-life picks, install orders for Mythic+, raid, healing, PvP and gold, and a runbook for fixing broken addons. Version numbers below were checked on CurseForge on October 28, 2026.

Quick summary

  • Set up the native tools first. Since patch 12.0, the default UI has a Boss Warning timeline, a damage meter, a Cooldown Manager, important-cast nameplates and text-to-speech combat alerts. Turn these on before you install anything.
  • Minimum stack for most players (6 addons): a boss mod (DBM or BigWigs), Details!, Raider.IO, Plater or Platynator, Baganator or Better Bags, and BugSack + BugGrabber.
  • Still dead on retail: WeakAuras combat auras (the last retail file is for 11.2.7), Hekili-style rotation helpers, GTFO and MoveAnything. Secret Values blocks addons from making combat decisions for you.
  • Check the date before you install. Patch 12.1 changed the aura APIs again, so a "Midnight ready" label from 12.0 isn't enough. Use the 4-step check below; DBM, BigWigs, MDT and Plater already carry files tagged for the 12.1.7 PTR (CurseForge).

Do addons work in WoW Midnight? What Secret Values changed

Yes, most do, within one rule. Blizzard's post on Midnight's combat addon changes says "addons should not be able to automate combat decisions for the player," and "if the UI displays a piece of combat information, addons will, in most cases, be able to present that information to you in a different way."

Use that rule to judge any addon:

Addon type Midnight status Examples
Reskins what the UI already shows Works ElvUI, Plater, Platynator, VuhDo, Cell, Bartender4
Planning, lookups, non-combat Works, untouched MDT, Raider.IO, Auctionator, TSM, HandyNotes, TomTom
Boss timers built on Blizzard's timeline Works (updated) DBM, BigWigs, LittleWigs
Reads live combat to trigger logic Broken or stripped WeakAuras combat triggers, Hekili, GTFO
Reads the saved combat log outside the game Unaffected Warcraft Logs uploader, desktop log tools

Patch 12.1 also added a new aura system for filtered aura displays, and aura-displaying addons needed updates for it. That's why a build from 12.0.7 can load fine and still miss features.

Example: your old Mythic+ WeakAuras pack imports without errors, but the "interrupt now" trigger never fires. Loading isn't the same as working. The pack needs combat data that addons can no longer read.

Turn on the native tools first

  1. Esc → Options → Gameplay/Combat: enable Boss Warnings (the timeline view) and text alerts.
  2. Edit Mode → Cooldown Manager: enable it and drag your defensive and major offensive cooldowns into the tracked bars. It's the main replacement for personal WeakAuras; Icy Veins' Midnight addon roundup pairs it with the Cooldown Manager Centered addon for layout.
  3. Esc → Options → Accessibility: set up text-to-speech combat audio alerts if you want spoken cues (combat start/end, health, target health).
  4. Raid frames: pick one of the three layouts Blizzard added. Dispellable debuffs are now drawn bolder.
  5. Damage meter: enable the built-in meter. It's enough for a quick look; Details! goes deeper.
  6. Edit Mode itself moves, resizes and hides most frames, including action bars, so you may not need a mover addon at all.

Only add an addon when you can name a problem the native setup doesn't solve.

How to install addons in WoW Midnight

  1. Close the game.
  2. Use an addon manager (the CurseForge app is the common one). It installs libraries such as Syndicator for Baganator automatically and updates everything in one click.
  3. Manual install: unzip the addon into World of Warcraft\_retail_\Interface\AddOns, then tick it under AddOns on the character select screen.
  4. ElvUI is not on CurseForge. Get it from tukui.org (or its GitHub) and update it there.
  5. Leave "Load out of date AddOns" off. Pre-Midnight builds that load this way usually throw errors or lose features.

Check if an addon is current for 12.1.5 (the 4-step test)

Run this before raid night and after every patch:

  1. Game version tag. On the addon's files page, the newest retail file should be tagged 12.1.x. A file tagged only 11.x is a pre-Midnight build.
  2. File date. The file should be dated after October 13, 2026 (12.1.5 went live then), or at least after the 12.1 launch for anything that touches auras.
  3. Author notes. Look for "12.1 aura API" or "Secret Values" in the changelog. A boss mod shipping a module for the current raid (BigWigs has a Venomous Abyss module) is stronger evidence than a "Midnight ready" badge.
  4. Live test. With BugSack installed, hit a training dummy and run one follower dungeon or Delve. If the error count goes up, there's a problem.

Example (CurseForge, October 28): DBM 12.1.18 (October 26), BigWigs v427.8 (October 23), MDT 6.3.26 (October 28), Plater v662 (October 28) and Method Raid Tools v.5335 (October 13) all pass steps 1–2. WeakAuras' last retail file is still 5.21.1 (January 18, 2026, tagged 11.2.7); every newer release is Classic-only, so it fails step 1.

Build the core stack (everyone)

Install these in this order and set each one up before adding the next:

  1. BugSack + BugGrabber. Install them first so later errors get caught quietly instead of popping up mid-pull.
  2. One boss mod: DBM or BigWigs (+ LittleWigs). Don't run both: you get every alert twice. If you raid, match whatever your raid leader runs. BigWigs users need LittleWigs for dungeons, Delves and scenarios.
  3. Details! Damage Meter. It updates in real time and breaks fights down further than the native meter. Set one window to damage and one to deaths.
  4. Nameplates: Plater or Platynator. Platynator is the simpler option, built for Midnight's API: type /platy and drag elements in a visual designer. Plater offers deeper control, but only import profiles built for 12.x. Older scripts relied on combat data that's now blocked.
  5. Bags: Baganator (categories, search, cross-character counts; needs Syndicator) or Better Bags (auto-categorized bag).
  6. Raider.IO. Install it through a manager, because its score database ships inside the addon and updates often.

Best quality-of-life addons for Midnight

These don't touch combat, so Secret Values doesn't affect them. Pick the ones that solve a problem you actually have:

Addon What it does Good for
Enhance QoL A bundle of small tweaks: drink macro, Mythic Keystone helper, quick LFG sign-up, cooldown panels and a Mythic+ timer (CurseForge description) Players who want one addon instead of five
Plumber Expansion summary, improved loot window, instance difficulty selector, backpack item tracker and more (CurseForge description) Collectors and casual players
Cooldown Manager Centered Reorganizes Blizzard's Cooldown Manager display (Icy Veins) Anyone replacing personal WeakAuras
Leatrix Plus A long-running collection of interface and quality-of-life options (Icy Veins) Tidying the default UI

Check each one's files page against the 4-step test first. Multi-tool addons such as Enhance QoL update in bursts, and a file tagged only 12.1.0 may still miss 12.1.5 features.

Mythic+ setup (install order)

  1. Core stack above.
  2. Mythic Dungeon Tools (MDT): plan pulls and forces % for each Season 2 dungeon, then share routes as strings. It's a planner, so Secret Values doesn't touch it.
  3. WarpDeplete: a compact timer, forces and death counter that replaces the old Mythic+ timer WeakAuras.
  4. Premade Groups Filter: filter listings by score, role and key level.
  5. Party cooldown tracking: an addon such as OmniCD only if its files page shows a current retail file. If not, use the default raid frames' defensive indicators.
  6. Details! Mythic+ Scoreboard for a post-key summary.

Example: a DPS pugging +10s runs Raider.IO, PGF, MDT with the group's route string, WarpDeplete and Platynator with interruptible casts highlighted. That's five addons on top of the core stack, and none of them read combat data.

Route help for each dungeon is in our Season 2 Mythic+ dungeons and rewards guide, kick assignments in the interrupt coordination guide, and first-key preparation in the Mythic+ beginner guide.

Raid setup (install order)

  1. Core stack, with the boss mod your guild uses.
  2. Northern Sky Raid Tools: timer-based reminders and assignments. CurseForge lists 12.1.32 (October 19), tagged 12.1.5.
  3. Method Raid Tools (MRT): notes, cooldown assignments, ready checks and attendance. Most raiders install it just to read the leader's note. CurseForge lists v.5335 (October 13), tagged 12.1.5.
  4. Combat logging + a log uploader: type /combatlog or let MRT log automatically, then upload to Warcraft Logs after raid. Desktop tools read WoWCombatLog.txt, which is outside the addon API.

Boss-by-boss help is in our Venomous Abyss raid guide and Unbinding of Kith'ix guide.

Healer setup

  1. VuhDo or Cell for raid frames with click-casting. VuhDo is the deeper of the two, and Cell is lighter, switches layouts automatically and has a raid-debuff highlight.
  2. BigDebuffs to show crowd control and big defensives on frames.
  3. Bind your dispel to a click-cast button on the frames. Blizzard now draws dispel types bolder by default, so check the native layout before you replace it.

PvP setup

  1. Gladius (or sArena Reloaded) for arena frames: trinkets, diminishing returns and casts.
  2. OmniBar for enemy interrupts and major cooldowns.
  3. BigDebuffs on unit frames.
  4. Test in a skirmish before rated play. PvP aura displays were the ones most affected by the 12.1 aura change.

To pick a spec, see our Midnight PvP tier list; our Assassination Rogue and Arms Warrior guides cover two of the top arena specs.

Gold, gathering and questing setup

  1. Auctionator first: tooltip prices, undercut scans, one-click cancel and shopping lists. Move to TSM only when you craft at volume or mail across many alts, and budget an evening to set it up.
  2. GatherMate2 (or HandyNotes plus plugins) for node maps.
  3. HandyNotes + TomTom while leveling (/way coordinates and an arrow). World Quest Tracker for world-quest lists.
  4. Altoholic to see gold, bags, professions and lockouts across your alts.
  5. Pawn to put upgrade values on items.

Profession picks are in our professions guide, and farming routes in the gold farming guide.

Fix broken addons (runbook)

  1. Read BugSack and note which addon name shows up first in the error.
  2. Update everything in your manager, then /reload.
  3. Halve the list: disable half your addons on the AddOns screen, log in, and repeat until the error disappears. The last half you disabled contains the culprit.
  4. Reset one addon's settings by renaming its file in _retail_\WTF\Account\<ACCOUNT>\SavedVariables\ (back it up first).
  5. Expect a rough day or two after each patch while authors catch up. Patch 12.1.7 is already on the PTR (our 12.1.7 guide), and the major addons above already carry files tagged for it.

Tips for returning players and alts

  • Coming back from The War Within: don't copy your old Interface and WTF folders over wholesale. Back them up, start clean with the core stack, and only re-import 12.x profiles.
  • Boosted or new character: addon settings are often per character. In ElvUI, Plater, Details and VuhDo/Cell, use the profile copy option instead of setting everything up again.
  • Alts: install Altoholic and Baganator's cross-character counts, and keep the same boss mod and nameplate profile on every character so alerts sound the same.
  • Getting back into weekly content: run the 4-step check before your first group. Our weekly checklist covers what to do each week after that.

FAQ

What are the best WoW Midnight addons for Season 2?

For most players: DBM or BigWigs, Details!, Raider.IO, Plater or Platynator, Baganator, and BugSack. Add MDT and WarpDeplete for Mythic+, Northern Sky and MRT for raids, VuhDo or Cell for healing, Gladius and OmniBar for arena, and Auctionator for gold.

Do addons still work in WoW Midnight?

Most do. Addons that display or reorganize information still work; addons that read live combat data to make decisions for you, such as rotation helpers and WeakAuras combat triggers, were blocked by Secret Values.

Does WeakAuras work in Midnight?

Not on retail. Its last retail file (5.21.1) is tagged 11.2.7, and every newer release is Classic-only (CurseForge). Use Blizzard's Cooldown Manager for your own cooldowns and buffs.

How do you install addons in WoW Midnight?

Close the game, install through an addon manager such as the CurseForge app, or unzip into _retail_\Interface\AddOns, then enable the addon on the character select screen. ElvUI comes from tukui.org instead.

Should I use DBM or BigWigs?

Either one, but not both. DBM is more popular and more opinionated, while BigWigs is lighter and modular and needs LittleWigs for dungeons and Delves. Match your raid group.

Can addons get you banned?

Addons that run inside Blizzard's addon API are allowed, and the API itself blocks combat automation. Tools that inject into or automate the client outside that API are a different matter, so read the EULA.
