THE GUIDE

This Assassination Rogue guide covers Midnight Season 2 on patch 12.1.5: Fatebound or Deathstalker, the openers, the single-target and AoE priorities with exact Pandemic refresh windows, stats, gems, enchants and trinkets, and how the spec plays in Mythic+ and PvP. Blizzard's October 27 class tuning hotfixes made no Assassination PvE changes but buffed Deathstalker in PvP and cut Subtlety by 8% (Icy Veins hotfix summary). Builds and priorities follow Icy Veins' Assassination Rogue guide and Method, cited inline.

Quick summary

  • Hero tree: Icy Veins' import codes recommend Fatebound for most content. Deathstalker wins for title-level keys and Sszorak. Method says Deathstalker is ahead by 2–5% after 12.1 tuning.
  • Core loop: keep Garrote and Rupture up, use Kingsbane with Deathmark, chain Envenom at 5+ combo points, and build with Mutilate or Fan of Knives.
  • Stats: item level first, then Crit > Haste > Mastery, and avoid Versatility (Icy Veins and Method agree).
  • Best trinkets: Voracious Heart of Ula'tek (on-use) and Twisted Horror's Tendril (passive) are S tier on Icy Veins.
  • Mythic+: strong defensives, Shroud skips, Blind skips and a Vanish-Garrote silence.

Assassination Rogue strengths and weaknesses

Strengths Weaknesses
Huge damage-over-time pressure across packs: bleeds on many targets, then finishers on one (Icy Veins M+ page) Ramp time: bleeds and Energy need to be set up first (Icy Veins)
Feint, Cloak of Shadows, Evasion, Crimson Vial and Cheat Death are "one of the biggest reasons for Rogue's strength in Mythic+" Deathmark is wasted on targets that die during it
Group skips with Shroud of Concealment, Distract and Blind Deathstalker's Mark is easy to lose on target swaps
Kingsbane and Deathmark burst windows Melee uptime matters a lot during Kingsbane

Icy Veins rated Assassination S+ for Mythic+ on October 12, and it was 2nd in MythicSim's log data. Our Mythic+ tier list compares it with the other specs for keys.

Best Assassination Rogue build: Fatebound or Deathstalker

Icy Veins' talent page opens by saying it is "back to playing Deathstalker in all content." Its detailed recommendations and quick-start import codes, however, favor Fatebound for single target and for "the vast majority of keylevels." Method says Deathstalker "has pulled ahead by 2-5% in all situations" and is the default for high-end players, while Fatebound remains "entirely viable." Here's how we read it:

Content Our pick Reason
Normal and Heroic raid Fatebound Raid Cleave Icy Veins: Deathstalker is at most 1–2% ahead in theory, "more prone to error"
Mythic raid progression Deathstalker if you can manage the Mark Method: 2–5% ahead. Icy Veins suggests Deathstalker single target on Sszorak
Mythic+ (most keys) Fatebound Mythic+/Delves Icy Veins: "similar DPS potential," easier, fewer quirks
Title-level keys Deathstalker Mythic+ Icy Veins: priority-target funnel from Singular Focus is "highly sought after"
Delves Fatebound Mythic+/Delves Same build as keys (Icy Veins)

How each plays. Deathstalker puts Deathstalker's Mark on one enemy. Each finisher lowers its count, and when it's consumed you get Darkest Night, which empowers your next Envenom (cast it at 7 combo points) and re-applies the Mark. If you lose the Mark on a target swap, "you essentially do not have a Hero Talent anymore". The talent lets you move the Mark with Mark for Death. Fatebound is "much more forgiving" and lets you use Feint more freely.

Icy Veins provides import codes for Fatebound Pure Single-Target, Fatebound Raid Cleave and Fatebound Mythic+/Delves. The Raid Cleave build adds Caustic Spatter and Crimson Tempest. You can drop to pure single target on The Coiled Altar or Entombed Sentinels, but Icy Veins doesn't recommend it.

Take the apex talent and Folio runes

Implacable (4 points, Icy Veins):

  1. Envenom grants bonus Energy.
  2. Points 2 and 3 add more Bleed and Nature damage.
  3. Point 4 adds Kingsbane damage and generates 5 combo points over the next second.

Icy Veins says it "aims to make our weaknesses less pronounced," mainly Energy starvation.

Omnium Folio:

Node Rune
1 Rune of Unleashed Fire
2 Rune of Self-Mending
3 Rune of Lingering
4 Rune of Burning Haste
5 Rune of Overload

Assassination Rogue opener

Always open from Stealth with Deadly Poison and Amplifying Poison active.

Single-target opener (Icy Veins, Deathstalker version; Fatebound skips the Mark steps):

  1. Garrote from Stealth.
  2. Mutilate to 5+ combo points.
  3. Rupture at 5+ combo points.
  4. Garrote again to extend Improved Garrote.
  5. Mutilate to 5+ combo points.
  6. Envenom.
  7. Deathmark, with potions, on-use trinkets and racials.
  8. Kingsbane.
  9. Envenom at 5+ combo points and Mutilate to build. With Deathstalker, cast Envenom at 7 combo points while Darkest Night is up. At exactly 6, use Shiv or Fan of Knives to reach 7.

AoE opener (Icy Veins):

  1. Garrote from Stealth twice for full Pandemic on Improved Garrote.
  2. Fan of Knives to build.
  3. Rupture at 5+.
  4. Deathmark with cooldowns.
  5. Kingsbane.
  6. Envenom at 5+.
  7. Crimson Tempest to spread bleeds until all targets have them.
  8. Then Envenom at 5+ and Fan of Knives to build.

Assassination Rogue rotation and priority

Fatebound single target (Icy Veins). This is a priority, not a fixed sequence.

  1. Keep Garrote up, cast from Vanish when possible before every Deathmark.
  2. Keep Rupture up at 5+ combo points.
  3. Deathmark when ready.
  4. Kingsbane on cooldown, synced with Deathmark.
  5. Envenom at 5+ combo points.
  6. Ambush whenever it's usable.
  7. Mutilate to build.
  8. Fan of Knives as soon as there's more than one target.
  9. Thistle Tea when low on Energy. The auto-use version is fine.

Deathstalker additions: apply Deathstalker's Mark with Garrote, move it with Mark for Death on target swaps when you're several finishers away from Darkest Night, cast Shiv on cooldown, and Envenom at 7 combo points with Darkest Night.

Multi-target:

  1. Garrote, ideally from Stealth, and Rupture at 5+.
  2. Use Crimson Tempest as your builder until every target has your bleeds, then switch to Fan of Knives.
  3. Deathmark when ready, with Kingsbane synced.
  4. Vanish to re-apply Improved Garrote when your first DoTs are close to expiring and the pack will live another 20+ seconds.
  5. Envenom at 5+ (7 with Darkest Night).
  6. Thistle Tea when Energy is low.

Refresh bleeds with Pandemic

Refreshing before expiry adds the remaining time, up to 30% of the new base duration:

Rupture Base duration Safe refresh at or below
5 combo points 24 s 7.2 s
6 combo points (Deeper Stratagem) 28 s 8.4 s
7 combo points (Sanguine Stratagem) 32 s 9.6 s

Example. Your 2-combo-point Rupture from a messy pull has 6 seconds left. A 5-combo-point refresh still gets full Pandemic, because the limit depends on the new duration, not the old one.

Snapshotting. Improved Garrote's bonus is lost if you overwrite an empowered Garrote with a normal one, so let it run out first. The bonus doubles during Deathmark.

Envenom chaining. Recast Envenom while the previous one is still active, but not too early.

Energy pooling. Pool before an Envenom chain restarts, before important add spawns and before damage-amp phases. Pooling is not a gain by itself.

Assassination Rogue cooldowns

Cooldown Recharge How to use it (Icy Veins)
Deathmark 2 min Use on targets that live the full duration. Pool Energy first. Delay it if you won't lose a full use over the fight
Kingsbane 1 min Use on cooldown with 100% melee and Envenom uptime. Its DoT doesn't scale with Haste
Thistle Tea 1 charge per minute Auto-activates below 30 Energy. Use it to keep Envenom chains going in amp phases
Evasion / Cloak of Shadows — Use them to stay in melee through mechanics. Icy Veins calls this a DPS gain

The tier set (2-piece and 4-piece) "has no effect on our rotation whatsoever," it just adds damage.

Poisons: Deadly Poison and Amplifying Poison as lethals. For non-lethals, Atrophic Poison in raid, and in Mythic+ whichever your tank wants: Crippling Poison for kiting, Numbing Poison to slow attack speed, or Atrophic Poison to reduce group damage.

Assassination Rogue stat priority, gems and enchants

Source Order
Icy Veins Item level > Crit > Haste > Mastery > Versatility. "Completely" avoid Versatility
Method Crit > Haste > Mastery >> Versatility

Icy Veins notes that item level matters most because of the Agility it brings, except on rings and necks, which have no Agility. There are no Haste breakpoints.

Gems: Indecipherable Eversong Diamond in one socket (Icy Veins and Method), with Crit or Haste gems such as Flawless Deadly Peridot or Flawless Quick Garnet. If you use the prismatic gem, include one of each color, such as Flawless Deadly Lapis and Flawless Deadly Amethyst.

Slot Icy Veins Method
Both weapons Rite of the Hash'ey + Thalassian Phoenix Oil Rite of the Hash'ey + Thalassian Phoenix Oil
Chest Mark of the Worldsoul Mark of the Worldsoul
Legs Forest Hunter's Armor Kit Forest Hunter's Armor Kit
Shoulders Silvermoon's Mending Silvermoon's Mending
Rings Eyes of the Eagle Eyes of the Eagle
Helm Empowered Blessing of Speed Empowered Hex of Leeching
Boots Farstrider's Hunt Shaladrassil's Roots

Consumables: Flask of the Blood Knights (Haste), or Flask of the Shattered Sun if all your gear has Haste (Icy Veins). For the potion, Icy Veins lists Light's Potential with Bloodlust and Method lists Liquid Luster or Potion of Recklessness. Add Concentrated Silvermoon Health Potion, Void-Touched Augment Rune and a primary-stat feast (Method).

Races: pick for looks. If you want to min-max, Mag'har Orc (Horde) or Night Elf (Alliance). Shadowmeld can cheese some mechanics in Mythic+.

Assassination Rogue BiS gear and trinkets

Tier slots (Icy Veins, overall): Gaze of the Coiled Watcher (Ula'tek), Somber Spaulders (Voidscar Arena), Chestwrap of Palpable Terror (Kith'ix), Gauntlets of Fevered Defense (Murder Row) and Coiled Hex Legguards (The Coiled Altar).

Raid priorities (Icy Veins): Zatha'tek, Breath of Corruption (best main hand at Myth track) and Voracious Heart of Ula'tek (best trinket), both from Ula'tek, plus Gebbo's Bottomless Bag.

Voidcore idea: instead of a Vault item, take a Nebulous Voidcore and bonus-roll Heroic Ula'tek. It's a slower item-level path but a direct route to your weapon, helm, neck and best trinkets. Orin Straylight near the Catalyst gives one free Voidcore weekly from 12.1.5. See our Great Vault guide.

Dungeons to farm: Voidscar Arena, Murder Row and King's Rest for several high-value items. Altar of Fangs for a dagger with a special effect. Blinding Vale and King's Rest for the best dungeon trinkets.

Tier Trinkets
S Voracious Heart of Ula'tek (on-use, best in slot), Twisted Horror's Tendril (best in slot), Font of Venomous Rage
A Keeper's Seething Core, Zul'jin's Guillotine Technique, Gebbo's Bottomless Bag
B Lustrous Golden Plumage (best M+ on-use), Resonant Bellowstone, Freightrunner's Flask, Vile Vial of Volatile Venom, Vashnik's Sanguine Rancor, Void Execution Mandate, Sapling of the Dawnroot
C Ruby Whelp Shell, Tattered Amani War Banner, Lightspire Core

Pair one on-use with one passive, and macro the on-use to Deathmark. Crests and upgrade tracks are in our Season 2 gearing guide, and Ula'tek's loot in the Venomous Abyss raid guide.

Assassination Rogue in Mythic+

Your job: set up bleeds on several targets, ramp Energy, cycle bleeds and finish on one priority target (Icy Veins).

  • Kick with a focus macro: /cast [@focus,exists,nodead][] Kick. Keep a plain Kick bound as well.
  • Vanish into Garrote silences through Iron Wire and is also a damage gain from Improved Garrote.
  • Sap before the pull. With Blackjack, the target takes reduced damage when Sap breaks.
  • Blind with Airborne Irritant and Blackjack becomes a low-cooldown AoE disrupt that reduces tank damage. It doesn't work on large elites or bosses.
  • Shiv removes Enrage effects, but then you can't use it for damage.
  • Shroud of Concealment and Distract set up skips. More enemies can detect stealth this expansion.

Skip a mob with Blind

  1. Blind the enemy blocking your path.
  2. Walk close enough that only you enter combat with it.
  3. Your group walks past. The Blinded enemy only engages the first player who got close.
  4. Once you're far enough away, Vanish to drop combat.

Assassination Rogue in PvP

Assassination is a strong PvP spec this season, with its best results in 2v2. Our PvP tier list has it at A tier: on Murlok's October 28 ladders it's first of 27 DPS specs in 2v2, seventh in Battleground Blitz, tenth in 3v3 and 13th in Solo Shuffle, and it wins 51.3% of Shuffle rounds on ArenaCoach. Subtlety ranks higher overall (S tier). Blizzard's October 27 PvP tuning made Deathstalker stronger again: Deathstalker's Mark and Hunt Them Down both deal 20% more damage in PvP combat (Blizzard hotfixes via Icy Veins). Meanwhile Subtlety took an 8% damage cut in all content. Neither change is fully reflected in those ladder ranks yet, so the gap between the two Rogue specs may narrow.

The PvE toolkit above carries over: Kick, Blind, Cloak of Shadows, Evasion, Feint and Shiv for Enrage effects. If you're new to rated play, start with our Solo Shuffle beginner guide.

Tips for returning and alt players

  • Returning players: Deathstalker barely changed from The War Within (Method). The new piece is the Implacable apex talent, which gives Energy on Envenom.
  • Boosted or catch-up characters: item level beats secondaries. Avoid Versatility pieces when you have the choice.
  • Alts: import Fatebound Mythic+/Delves and learn Pandemic timings before you try Deathstalker. Our 12.1.5 catch-up guide is the fastest gear route.
  • Planning ahead: the 12.1.7 PTR notes have no Rogue tuning so far; see the 12.1.7 Echoes of the Worldcore guide. Other Season 2 spec guides include Arms Warrior and Arcane Mage.

FAQ

Is Assassination Rogue good in Midnight Season 2?

Yes. Icy Veins rated it S+ for Mythic+ on October 12, and it's A tier on our PvP tier list, first of 27 DPS specs in 2v2 on the October 28 ladders. The October 27 hotfixes left its PvE damage unchanged.

Fatebound or Deathstalker for Assassination Rogue?

Fatebound for most raid and Mythic+ content per Icy Veins' builds. Deathstalker for title-level keys and Mythic progression, where Method measures a 2–5% lead, and in PvP after the October 27 buffs.

What is the Assassination Rogue stat priority in 12.1.5?

Item level first, then Crit > Haste > Mastery > Versatility (Icy Veins, updated October 12). Method agrees and puts Versatility last by a wide margin.

When should you refresh Rupture as Assassination?

At 7.2 seconds or less for a 5-combo-point Rupture, 8.4 for 6 and 9.6 for 7, which keeps the Pandemic window (Icy Veins).

What are the best Assassination Rogue trinkets?

Voracious Heart of Ula'tek and Twisted Horror's Tendril, with Font of Venomous Rage close behind (Icy Veins S tier).

Which poisons should Assassination Rogue use?

Deadly Poison and Amplifying Poison, plus Atrophic Poison in raid. In keys, pick Crippling, Numbing or Atrophic based on your tank's needs.
