THE GUIDE

Quick summary

  • Two ways to level: mine nodes (slow, costs nothing but time) or smelt bought ore (fast, costs gold). Most players mix the two. Smelting can't cover every bracket, so you'll mine three gaps either way: 290–300, then 315–325, then 340–350 (Wowhead).
  • Train five ranks: Apprentice, Journeyman (50), Expert (125), Artisan (200), Master (275 skill; listed at character level 40 to 55, which you'll have passed by the time you reach Outland at 58).
  • Master Mining is in Hellfire Peninsula: Hurnak Grimmord at Honor Hold (Alliance) or Krugosh at Thrallmar (Horde).
  • Outland route: Fel Iron in Hellfire Peninsula 300-325, Fel Iron and Adamantite in Zangarmarsh or Terokkar 325-350, then Nagrand, Netherstorm or Shadowmoon Valley 350-375 (Wowhead, Icy Veins, wow-professions).
  • Fel Iron and Adamantite both give points up to 375. You can finish in any Outland zone, just more slowly.

This TBC Anniversary mining leveling guide is current for Phase 3.5, the Zul'Aman update of October 22, 2026. That update changed no ore, node or trainer. Blizzard's update notes did add epic gems to Magtheridon's Black Sack and the Jewelcrafter's Brilliant Glass, which keeps demand for ore high among Jewelcrafters. Mining in TBC has no passive stat bonus. The Toughness Stamina bonus was added in Wrath of the Lich King (Warcraft Wiki).

Understand how Mining skill-ups work

Learning Mining gives you Find Minerals, which shows ore on the minimap, and Smelting, which turns ore into bars at a forge. Both mining a node and smelting a bar can raise your skill (Icy Veins). You need a Mining Pick in your bags. It doesn't have to be equipped (wow-professions).

Every node and smelting recipe has a color for your current skill:

Color Can you gather it? Skill-up chance
Red No, skill too low None
Orange Yes, attempts may fail The first successful hit is guaranteed to give a point
Yellow Yes, attempts occasionally fail Most successful hits give a point
Green Yes, rarely fails Rarely gives a point
Gray Yes, never fails Never gives a point

The route below keeps you on orange and yellow nodes. A vein takes several hits to empty, and Icy Veins advises clearing each one fully for the extra ore. Movement speed, such as Crusader Aura or a Riding Crop, increases how many nodes you reach per hour.

Train every rank on time

Mining rank Train at skill Character level Raises cap to
Apprentice 1 5 75
Journeyman 50 10 150
Expert 125 20 225
Artisan 200 35 300
Master 275 40–55 375

Published guides put the character level for Master Mining anywhere from 40 to 55. In practice it never stops you: Hellfire Peninsula starts at level 58, so you clear every listed figure before you reach Hurnak Grimmord or Krugosh.

Ranks 1-300 are taught by any city Mining trainer, and city guards will mark one on your map. wow-professions lists them by faction:

Faction Classic trainers (1-300) Master trainer (300-375)
Alliance Geofram Bouldertoe (Ironforge), Gelman Stonehand (Stormwind), Kurdram Stonehammer (Darkshore), Matt Johnson (Duskwood), Yarr Hammerstone (Dun Morogh), Muaat (The Exodar), Pikkle (Tanaris, neutral) Hurnak Grimmord, Honor Hold, Hellfire Peninsula, around 56,64
Horde Makaru (Orgrimmar), Brom Killian (Undercity), Brek Stonehoof (Thunder Bluff), Johan Focht (Silverpine Forest), Krunn (Durotar), Belil (Silvermoon City), Pikkle (Tanaris, neutral) Krugosh, Thrallmar, Hellfire Peninsula, around 55,37

Coordinates from Icy Veins.

Master unlocks at 275, so you can train it as soon as you arrive in Outland. Without it, you're stuck at 300 and Fel Iron stays useless.

Pick your method: gather, smelt, or mix

Method Gold cost Time Best for Catch
Gather only None, and you sell the surplus Slowest Leveling characters already questing in these zones; players who want the ore 1-300 means revisiting old zones at 70
Smelt to 290, then mine High (hundreds of Mithril and Thorium ore) Fastest to 300 Level 70 alts with gold Unlucky skill-ups can need more Mithril than the list says
Mixed (mine the cheap brackets, buy expensive ore) Medium Medium Most players Requires checking your realm's prices
Smelt in Outland High (Felsteel step especially) Fast in bursts Players who already own the ore or bars Smelting only covers four of the Outland brackets

Wowhead's guide covers both and says the choice depends on ore prices on your realm. Our advice: if you plan to use the ore yourself for Blacksmithing, Engineering or Jewelcrafting, mine it. Smelting bought ore makes sense only when you value the hours more than the gold.

Level Mining 1-300 by gathering

Skill Nodes Zones (Wowhead / wow-professions / Icy Veins)
1-65 Copper Any starter zone. Night Elves start in Darkshore, since Teldrassil has no Copper
65-125 Copper (to 100), Tin, Silver Hillsbrad Foothills, Redridge Mountains, The Barrens, Ashenvale, Thousand Needles, Loch Modan, Darkshore
125-175 Iron, Gold (155+), Tin Arathi Highlands, Desolace, Thousand Needles, Stranglethorn Vale
175-245 Mithril, Gold, Truesilver (230+) The Hinterlands, Tanaris, Azshara, Arathi Highlands
245-275 Small Thorium, Mithril, Truesilver Un'Goro Crater, Blasted Lands, Felwood, Silithus
275-300 Small and Rich Thorium Un'Goro Crater, Eastern Plaguelands, Winterspring, Burning Steppes

Example: a level 70 with 160 Mining flies into Tanaris and mines every Mithril node. Mithril turns green at 225 and gray at 275 (Icy Veins), so at 245 the player moves on to Un'Goro for Small Thorium. Staying longer would waste time on green nodes.

wow-professions shows cave-by-cave routes for each zone and warns low-level characters away from some elite areas, such as the Hinterlands elites and the Shadow Hold caves in Felwood. At 70 you can ignore those warnings. The guide's tip for Durotar is the Venture Co. mine, with about eight Copper nodes for a high-level player.

Level Mining 1-290 by smelting

Smelting needs a forge and works anywhere you can stand next to one. Buy toward the top of each range, because unlucky skill-ups add up:

Ore About how many
Copper Ore 115–130
Tin Ore 60–70
Silver Ore 35–40
Iron Ore 60–65
Gold Ore 25
Mithril Ore 280–300
Truesilver Ore 50–60
Thorium Ore 120–170

The ranges span the shopping lists in Wowhead's and wow-professions' smelting routes.

The steps:

Skill Smelt Notes
1-65 Copper Bar Keep the bars for Bronze
65-75 Tin Bar Turns gray at 75 but you need the bars
75-100/105 Bronze Bar (1 Copper + 1 Tin bar) You'll land somewhere around 100-110
100-125 Silver Bar
125-155 Iron Bar
155-175 Gold Bar
175-230 Mithril Bar Train Artisan at 200. The last points before 230 are slow
230-250 Truesilver Bar
250-290 Thorium Bar Gray at 290
290-300 Mine Thorium No bar gives points here

Steps from Wowhead and wow-professions; gray thresholds from Icy Veins' smelting table.

Level Mining 300-375 in Outland

First, check the Outland node thresholds (Icy Veins):

Node Orange Yellow Green Gray Where it spawns
Fel Iron Deposit 300 325 350 400 Every Outland zone, the only ore in Hellfire Peninsula
Adamantite Deposit 325 350 375 425 Every zone except Hellfire Peninsula
Rich Adamantite Deposit 350 375 400 450 Mostly Netherstorm and Shadowmoon Valley, plus flying-only spots elsewhere (Wowhead)

Fel Iron stays green until 400, so it keeps giving occasional points up to 375. Wowhead notes that past 325 they aren't guaranteed.

Route by gathering

Skill Zone Mine Flying?
300-325 Hellfire Peninsula Fel Iron only. Run the mountain edges wow-professions has two flying routes and a ground route that avoids dense mob areas
325-350 Zangarmarsh or Terokkar Forest Fel Iron and Adamantite Terokkar has a flying route and a ground route; Rich Adamantite in Skettis waits until 350
350-375 Nagrand, Netherstorm or Shadowmoon Valley Adamantite, Rich Adamantite, Fel Iron Netherstorm and Shadowmoon routes assume flying; Nagrand works on foot

Example: at 324, a ground-mount player in Hellfire swaps to Zangarmarsh. Fel Iron is about to turn yellow, and the Adamantite nodes in Zangarmarsh are orange, which means a guaranteed point on the first successful hit.

Route by smelting

Skill Smelt Materials
300-315 Fel Iron Bar About 90 Fel Iron Ore (2 per bar)
315-325 Mine Fel Iron No bar gives points
325-340 Adamantite Bar About 90 Adamantite Ore
340-350 Mine Adamantite No bar gives points
350-365 Eternium Bar About 90 Eternium Ore
365-375 Felsteel Bar 3 Fel Iron Bars + 2 Eternium Bars each; Wowhead's table shows 38 crafts

Wowhead warns that Felsteel can be very expensive and suggests checking prices before smelting it. Most players mine the last 10 points.

If you're under 70

Questing in Hellfire with Mining trained covers 300-325 almost for free. Our leveling guide 1-70 has the questing route through each Outland zone.

Use Mining for the Netherwing dailies

Mining unlocks a reputation daily too. Once you reach the Netherwing dailies on Netherwing Ledge in Shadowmoon Valley, the Nethercite Ore quest asks you to mine Nethercite deposits on the ledge and turn the ore in for Netherwing reputation (Icy Veins Netherwing guide). Herbalism and Skinning have their own versions, and you can only do one of the three each day. It stacks with the other Netherwing dailies, and the deposits can also drop a Netherwing Egg for extra reputation. You need a flying mount for the Netherwing dailies.

Use the ore you mine

Partner profession What it uses Our guide
Blacksmithing Fel Iron, Adamantite, Eternium, Felsteel TBC Anniversary Blacksmithing guide
Engineering Fel Iron and Adamantite bars, plus Motes of Earth and Fire from nodes TBC Anniversary Engineering guide
Jewelcrafting Raw ore for prospecting, and the gems that drop from nodes TBC Anniversary Jewelcrafting guide

Icy Veins' loot tables show Outland nodes dropping Motes of Earth or Fire, Eternium Ore and green-quality gems such as Blood Garnet and Shadow Draenite. Ten Motes combine into one Primal of the same element. If you keep Mining as a pure gatherer, the surplus ore can go on the Auction House. Our gold farming guide compares ore farming with other gold methods, and our Herbalism leveling guide covers the other gathering profession that shares the same flying routes.

Avoid these mistakes

  1. Arriving in Outland without Master. You'll cap at 300 and see Fel Iron as unmineable. Train Master at your faction's trainer in Hellfire first.
  2. Forgetting the Mining Pick. You can't mine without one in your bags.
  3. Farming gray nodes. Mithril goes gray at 275 and Thorium (small) at 345. Check the color tables and move on.
  4. Smelting Felsteel without checking prices. Wowhead flags it as the most expensive step. The last 10 points are cheap to mine.
  5. Only partly mining a node. A vein can hold several hits of ore. Empty it before you leave.
  6. Selling every mote. Engineers and Blacksmiths use Motes of Earth and Fire. Check prices or your own crafting needs first.

Return, boost, or level an alt

  • Returning player at 300 skill: buy Master Mining in Hellfire and go straight to Fel Iron. Phase 3.5 doesn't change the route.

  • Boosted or fresh 70: you can buy your way to 290 by smelting or mine Classic zones at 70 speed. Either way, a flying mount makes the 350-375 zones much faster. See our flying mount guide.

  • Leveling alt: train Mining at level 5 and mine as you quest. Reaching 1-300 comes naturally from zone progression, and Hellfire Peninsula handles 300-325.

  • Choosing professions: our best professions guide compares Mining pairings with every other combination.

FAQ

What's the fastest way to level Mining 1-375 in TBC Anniversary? Smelting bought ore to 290, mining Thorium to 300, then smelting Fel Iron, Adamantite and Eternium with mining in the gaps (Wowhead). It's also the most expensive route.

Where is the Master Mining trainer in TBC Anniversary? Hellfire Peninsula. Alliance: Hurnak Grimmord at Honor Hold. Horde: Krugosh at Thrallmar. You need 275 Mining. Guides list character level 40 to 55, so any character who has reached Outland qualifies.

Where should I mine from 300 to 325? Hellfire Peninsula. Fel Iron is the only ore there, and it is orange from 300.

Does Fel Iron give skill points up to 375? Yes, but they aren't guaranteed after 325. Fel Iron is yellow from 325 and green from 350 (Wowhead, Icy Veins).

Can I level Mining to 375 without a flying mount? Yes. Stay in Zangarmarsh and Terokkar, or use Nagrand. wow-professions says Adamantite and Fel Iron there give points to 375.

Does Mining give a bonus in TBC Anniversary? No. Mining has no passive bonus in TBC, since the Toughness Stamina bonus arrived in Wrath of the Lich King. Its value is the ore and the Nethercite Ore daily for Netherwing.
