TBC Anniversary Skinning Leveling Guide 1-375: Mobs and Routes
TBC Anniversary skinning leveling guide 1-375: Horde and Alliance routes, the mob-level formula, Helboars to Clefthoofs, trainers and leathers.

In this guide 9 sections
Quick summary
- Skinning levels from corpses, not nodes. You need a Skinning Knife in your bags and a fully looted beast, dragonkin or silithid corpse. Humanoids can be skinned only rarely (Icy Veins).
- Your skill sets which mob levels you can skin. Up to 100 skill, the highest mob level is skill/10 + 10. Above 100, it's skill/5 (wow-professions).
- Train five ranks: Journeyman at 50, Expert at 125, Artisan at 200, Master at 275 skill (listed at character level 40 to 55, which you'll have passed by the time you reach Outland at 58).
- Master Skinning: Jelena Nightsky at Honor Hold (Alliance), Moorutu at Thrallmar (Horde), or Seymour in Shattrath for both factions (wow-professions).
- Outland route: Helboars and Ravagers in Hellfire Peninsula 300-330, then Talbuks and Clefthoofs in northern Nagrand 330-375 (Icy Veins, wow-professions).
This TBC Anniversary skinning leveling guide takes you from 1 to 375 on Anniversary realms, with a route for each faction, the formula that decides which mobs you can skin, and the Outland leathers worth keeping. It's current for Phase 3.5, the Zul'Aman update of October 22, 2026, which changed no Skinning trainers, mobs or recipes. Skinning in TBC has no passive bonus: Master of Anatomy arrived in patch 3.0.2 (Warcraft Wiki), so its value is the leather itself.
How Skinning works in TBC
- Buy a Skinning Knife from a Skinning trainer, a Leatherworking supplies vendor or a general goods vendor. It only needs to be in your bags (Icy Veins, wow-professions).
- Loot the corpse fully first. You can't skin a corpse that still has loot (Icy Veins).
- Skin other people's kills. Icy Veins notes that players often don't skin their own beasts, which gives you free skill-ups.
- Red or orange doesn't guarantee a point. wow-professions warns that a skill-up is more likely on these corpses but not certain.
- Enchant Gloves - Skinning lets you skin a mob one level higher than your skill normally allows (wow-professions).
Convert your skill to a mob level
wow-professions gives the formula:
| Your skill | Formula | Highest mob level you can skin |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | 50/10 + 10 | 15 |
| 100 | 100/10 + 10 | 20 |
| 150 | 150/5 | 30 |
| 200 | 200/5 | 40 |
| 250 | 250/5 | 50 |
| 300 | 300/5 | 60 |
| 325 | 325/5 | 65 |
| 350 | 350/5 | 70 |
| 360 | 360/5 | 72 |
| 375 | 375/5 | 75 |
That's why the route moves zones when it does. When the beasts around you become easy to skin, find higher-level ones.
Skinning trainers and ranks
| Skinning rank | Train at skill | Character level | Raises cap to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice | 1 | 5 | 75 |
| Journeyman | 50 | 10 | 150 |
| Expert | 125 | 20 | 225 |
| Artisan | 200 | 35 | 300 |
| Master | 275 | 40–55 | 375 |
Guides list character level 40 to 55 for Master in a gathering profession. It never blocks you in practice: Outland's first zone starts at level 58, so you're past every listed figure by the time you reach a Master trainer.
| Faction | Trainers named on the route (wow-professions) | Master trainer |
|---|---|---|
| Horde | Thuwd (Orgrimmar), Dranh (Camp Taurajo), Kulleg Stonehorn (Camp Mojache, Feralas) | Moorutu, Thrallmar, near the inn behind a mammoth bone (Icy Veins: about 56,38) |
| Alliance | Balthus Stoneflayer (Ironforge) | Jelena Nightsky, Honor Hold inn before the stairs (Icy Veins: about 54,63) |
| Both | City guards will mark any Skinning trainer | Seymour, Shattrath City |
Skinning 1-300 routes by faction
wow-professions' routes are built for high-level characters switching professions. Icy Veins gives target mob levels for each bracket.
Horde route
| Skill | Where | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1-50/75 | Durotar, Sen'jin Village toward Orgrimmar | Skin every beast. The level 1-6 starting area won't help, since you get professions at 5 |
| 50 | Orgrimmar | Train Journeyman from Thuwd |
| 75-125 | The Barrens toward Camp Taurajo | Reach 125 before you arrive |
| 125 | Camp Taurajo | Train Expert from Dranh |
| 125-205 | Thousand Needles | Reach 205 before leaving |
| 205 | Camp Mojache, Feralas (fly via Tanaris) | Train Artisan from Kulleg Stonehorn |
| 205-280 | Feralas | 205-230 around Camp Mojache, 230-260 Yeti cave (or Hippogryphs to the south), 260-280 the higher-level Yeti cave |
| 280-300 | Feralas or Un'Goro Crater | Stay at the cave entrance beasts or fly to Un'Goro |
Alliance route
| Skill | Where | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1-50 | Dun Morogh, around the lake near Ironforge | Skin every beast |
| 50 | Ironforge | Train Journeyman from Balthus Stoneflayer |
| 50-115 | Toward and through Loch Modan | Continue toward Loch Modan, about 75 is enough |
| 115-140 | Wetlands, along the river to Menethil Harbor | Make sure you reach 125 |
| 125 | Ironforge (fly) | Train Expert |
| 140-155 | Wetlands | Reach 155 so you can skin the level 31 Raptors in Arathi |
| 155-205 | Arathi Highlands | 155-170 first path, 170-205 the higher-level raptors. Stay out of the southeast level 36-37 raptors until 180 |
| 205 | Ironforge | Train Artisan |
| 205-300 | Feralas, then Un'Goro Crater | Same Feralas route as the Horde (Camp Mojache area, then the Yeti caves) |
By mob level (Icy Veins)
| Skill | Target mobs | Leather you'll get |
|---|---|---|
| 1-65 | Starter zone beasts | Ruined Leather Scraps, Light Leather |
| 65-150 | Level 13-30 mobs | Medium and Heavy Leather |
| 150-225 | Level 30-45 mobs | Heavy Leather, Thick Hide |
| 225-250 | Level 45-50 mobs | Leather from those mobs. Rugged Leather starts at 250 |
| 250-300 | Whatever you kill fastest at a good skill-up rate | Rugged Leather |
Example: a level 70 Alliance warrior with 160 Skinning flies to Arathi Highlands. The formula says 160/5 = level 32, so the level 31 raptors work. At 180, the 36-37 raptors in the southeast open up (180/5 = 36).
Skinning 300-375: best Outland zones
Train Master first, at Honor Hold, Thrallmar or Shattrath.
| Skill | Zone | Target |
|---|---|---|
| 300-305 | Hellfire Peninsula, around Zeth'gor | Starving Helboars (wow-professions) |
| 305-310 | Hellfire Peninsula | Deranged Helboars |
| 310-330 | Hellfire Peninsula | Razorfang Hatchlings and Razorfang Ravagers; boars and ravagers carry you to about 330 |
| 330-375 | Northern Nagrand | Talbuks and Clefthoofs (Icy Veins, wow-professions) |
| 350+ | Any Outland zone | Most skinnable mobs; by 360 every Outland beast works (skill 360 / 5 = level 72) |
Example: at 332, a Horde hunter leaves Hellfire for northern Nagrand. Clefthoofs give skill-ups and can drop Thick Clefthoof Leather, which Icy Veins describes as an expensive endgame crafting material. Staying in Nagrand to 375 is fine. Icy Veins says moving to a higher zone after 350 makes very little difference.
Know the valuable leathers
| Material | Where it comes from | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Knothide Leather Scraps | Most Outland beasts of level 58 and up | Converted into Knothide Leather for Leatherworking |
| Fel Hide | Demons, alongside normal leather | Fel Leather Boots, Fel Leather Leggings |
| Thick Clefthoof Leather | Clefthoofs and Elekk Demolishers (Warcraft Wiki) | Nethercleft Leg Armor and Drums of Battle |
| Crystal Infused Leather | Basilisks and ravagers (Warcraft Wiki) | Felstalker armor and other mail patterns |
| Nether Dragonscales | Outland dragonkin | Dragonscale Leatherworking gear |
| Cobra Scales | A small number of mobs | Physical DPS leg enchants such as Nethercobra Leg Armor |
wow-professions recommends pairing Skinning with Leatherworking. You can sell the armor you craft and avoid buying leather at the Auction House. See our TBC Anniversary Leatherworking guide. The Leatherworking 300–375 route alone uses about 1,500 Knothide Leather, and its new Greater Drums, Knothide Quiver and Knothide Ammo Pouch patterns (October 22, sold by Outland faction vendors) keep leather in demand. For which leathers sell best on your realm, see our gold farming guide.
Avoid these Skinning mistakes
- Forgetting the knife. You can't skin without one in your bags.
- Leaving loot on the corpse. Loot everything, then skin.
- Skipping trainer visits. Expert at 125 and Artisan at 200 are easy to miss mid-route. The Horde route builds them into the path at Camp Taurajo and Camp Mojache.
- Going to high mobs too early. Check the formula before you fly. A mob above your limit is a waste of time.
- Selling every Clefthoof skin. Thick Clefthoof Leather goes into Nethercleft Leg Armor. Check its value before you vendor or list it.
- Ignoring other players' kills. In busy Hellfire areas, others leave corpses unskinned. Use them.
Return, boost, or level an alt
- Returning player at 300: train Master and go straight to Zeth'gor's Helboars.
- Boosted or fresh 70: follow your faction's 1-300 route. At 70 you'll one-shot most beasts, so the route goes as fast as you can find corpses.
- Leveling alt: train at level 5 and skin as you quest. Your kills give you corpses all the way through the route, which follows our leveling guide 1-70 closely.
- Reputation farmers: skin any beast you kill while farming, such as the Zangarmarsh mobs on the Sporeggar reputation route. Every corpse within your level limit can give a point.
- Second profession: compare every option in our professions leveling guide. Skinning pairs with Leatherworking, or with Mining or Herbalism for pure gold.
Independent sellers list profession leveling on the TBC Anniversary professions page; every other guide and category is on the TBC Anniversary hub. Blizzard's End User License Agreement restricts account sharing and paid in-game services, so a listing there isn't permission from Blizzard.
FAQ
Where is the Master Skinning trainer in TBC Anniversary? Jelena Nightsky at the Honor Hold inn (Alliance), Moorutu at Thrallmar near the inn (Horde), or Seymour in Shattrath City for either faction (wow-professions).
What should I skin from 300 to 330? Starving Helboars at Zeth'gor to 305, Deranged Helboars to about 310, then Razorfang Hatchlings and Ravagers in Hellfire Peninsula (wow-professions).
What's the best zone for Skinning 330-375? Northern Nagrand. Talbuks and Clefthoofs give skill-ups all the way to 375, and Clefthoofs can drop Thick Clefthoof Leather (Icy Veins, wow-professions).
How do I know what level mob I can skin? Below 100 skill: skill/10 + 10. Above 100: skill/5. At 300 that's level 60, and at 350 it's level 70 (wow-professions).
Does Skinning give a bonus in TBC Anniversary? No. The Master of Anatomy critical strike bonus came in Wrath of the Lich King, so in TBC Skinning is only about the leather.
Does a Skinning glove enchant help? Enchant Gloves - Skinning lets you skin a mob one level higher than your skill normally allows (wow-professions).
