Devourer Demon Hunter Guide: Midnight Season 2 Builds, Rotation
Devourer Demon Hunter guide for Midnight Season 2 (12.1.5): Annihilator vs Void-Scarred, opener, rotation, stats, BiS trinkets, weapon, M+ and PvP tips.

In this guide 16 sections
This Devourer Demon Hunter guide covers Midnight Season 2 on patch 12.1.5: which hero tree to play, how Fury and Soul Fragments drive the spec, the Annihilator opener and priorities, Void-Scarred differences, gear, stats and how Devourer fits Mythic+ and PvP. Blizzard's October 27 class tuning left Devourer's PvE damage alone and buffed Collapsing Star by 20% in PvP only (Icy Veins hotfix summary). Builds and priorities follow Icy Veins' Devourer guide (updated October 12 for 12.1.5) and Method, cited inline.
Quick summary
- Play Annihilator for raids and Mythic+ in patch 12.1.5. Icy Veins and Method both recommend it. Void-Scarred has a higher theoretical ceiling, but its long casts and forced movement are easy to disrupt. Void-Scarred is Icy Veins' pick for Delves.
- Stat priority: Intellect > Mastery > Haste ≥ Critical Strike >> Versatility (Method; Icy Veins puts Haste a step ahead of Crit).
- The loop: build Fury and Soul Fragments with Consume and Reap, spend 100 Fury on Void Ray, enter Void Metamorphosis at 50 Souls, then cast Collapsing Star every 30 Souls and keep the form alive as long as you can. Aim for 4 or more Collapsing Stars per window as Annihilator.
- Gear: two passive trinkets (Twisted Horror's Tendril plus Gebbo's Bottomless Bag), the 4-piece Abyssal Doomhound's Pursuit set, and a crafted Spellbreaker's Warglaive as your first craft (Icy Veins).
- In Mythic+: use Consume Magic purges, Vengeful Retreat debuff clears, and curse or disease removal. Swap Emptiness for Soul Glutton in low keys where fights are short.
Devourer strengths and weaknesses
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| Strong priority damage and AoE that grows with pull size in Mythic+ (Icy Veins) | Icy Veins says this season's raid doesn't suit its spread cleave and short-window burst |
| Brings Chaos Brand, a raid buff every group wants one of | Lower burst than other specs; it ramps instead |
| Very durable: two Blur charges, passive mitigation, leech and healing from every Soul consumed | Void Ray roots you while channeling |
| Exceptional mobility (Shift, Pursuit, Glide) and a 30-yard Disrupt | Two resources to manage; overcapping either one loses damage |
Icy Veins describes Devourer as a 25-yard caster that also dips into melee, so it plays more like an Evoker than like Havoc.
Best Devourer build: Annihilator or Void-Scarred
| Content | Recommended hero tree | Why | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raid, single target | Annihilator | Strong single target after repeated Collapsing Star buffs; less prone to disruption | Icy Veins, Method |
| Raid, cleave | Annihilator | Burst cleave from Collapsing Star and Eradicate | Icy Veins |
| Mythic+ | Annihilator | Strong priority damage and AoE that scales with pull size | Icy Veins, Method |
| Delves | Void-Scarred | Fits the stop-start pull cadence; high movement and burst | Icy Veins |
| Delves, if you stay Annihilator | Annihilator with Doomsayer | Icy Veins suggests Doomsayer when you drop combat often (our inference for Delves) | Icy Veins |
What each tree does:
- Annihilator: Consume, Devour and Void Ray build stacks of Voidfall. At 3 stacks, your next Reap calls down Void Meteors that deal heavy Cosmic damage and generate 2 Soul Fragments each. Entering Void Metamorphosis resets Reap and gives you 3 Voidfall stacks at once.
- Void-Scarred: inside Void Metamorphosis, Voidblade becomes Pierce the Veil, The Hunt becomes Predator's Wake, and Hungering Slash becomes Reaper's Toll. The first cast of each triggers a Voidsurge. Since 12.1.5, each Collapsing Star resets The Hunt.
Make the key talent choices
From Icy Veins' 12.1.5 build notes:
- Emptiness on the final choice node in every single-target build. Its ramping Haste extends Void Metamorphosis.
- Tempered Soul over Spontaneous Immolation. Two Soul Immolation charges smooth the rotation.
- Harness the Cosmos over Doomsayer for Annihilator in raids and high keys. Doomsayer only fires once in a boss fight. Take Doomsayer in low keys or whenever you drop combat often.
- Eradicate in cleave and AoE builds. After a fully channeled Void Ray, your next Reap becomes a 25-yard cone.
- Mythic+ swaps: Soul Glutton over Emptiness in low keys where fights are short. Soul Cleanse or Burn It Out depending on whether the dungeon has curses or diseases.
- Pure multi-target fights: drop Second Helping for a point in Demonic Instinct.
Max out the Apex talent
Devourer's Apex talent, Midnight, has 4 points, all built around Collapsing Star (Icy Veins):
| Points | Effect |
|---|---|
| 1 | Collapsing Star always critically strikes |
| 2–3 | +3% Cosmic damage per point, and Collapsing Star crit damage +50% of your crit chance per point |
| 4 | Entering Void Metamorphosis spawns 5 Soul Fragments and grants an immediate Collapsing Star |
Icy Veins' example: at 20% crit, Collapsing Star crits for 220% damage, or 260% with Calamitous.
Set your Omnium Folio runes
Icy Veins recommends, in unlock order: Rune of Unleashed Fire, Rune of Void-Tainted Shell, Rune of Lingering, Rune of Masterful Cunning, Rune of Overload. Only the fourth rune (the stat proc) makes a noticeable difference. Our Omnium Folio guide covers how to unlock them.
How Devourer works: Fury and Soul Fragments
Devourer runs on two resources. Most early mistakes come from overcapping one of them.
| Resource | Cap | Generated by | Spent on | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fury | 120 (Annihilator), 140 (Void-Scarred) | Consume, Voidblade, Hungering Slash, Soul Immolation, collecting Souls (4 each), full Void Ray channel (10, Voidglare Boon) | Void Ray (100) outside the form | Inside Void Metamorphosis, Fury drains; the form ends at 0 |
| Soul Fragments (bar) | 50 to enter the form (35 with Soul Glutton); 40 while transformed | Consume (1), Entropy (1 every 12 sec), Soul Immolation (3), Void Ray (many, via Waste Not), Collapsing Star (3), entering the form (5, via Midnight) | Void Metamorphosis; one Collapsing Star per 30 Souls inside the form | Souls past the cap are wasted |
| Souls on the ground | 10 | Same as above | Collected by walking over them or casting Reap (up to 4; up to 10 after a full Void Ray with Moment of Craving) | Keep room so new Souls aren't lost |
Four habits that fix most problems:
- Check before you Reap. Each Soul gives 4 Fury. A 4-Soul Reap at 90 Fury overcaps.
- Don't collect Souls you can't use. If you're at 50 and Void Metamorphosis isn't ready, leave them on the ground.
- Smuggle Souls. Have some on the ground as you enter and leave the form.
- Use spenders right away. Void Ray at 100 Fury, Collapsing Star as soon as it lights up.
Devourer rotation: Annihilator single target
This is Method's 12.1.5 priority. Follow it from top to bottom every global.
Outside Void Metamorphosis:
- Consume with Soulburst active.
- Void Metamorphosis if available.
- Reap at 4+ Souls, or Reap/Eradicate at 3 Voidfall stacks.
- Void Ray (100 Fury).
- Consume.
Inside Void Metamorphosis:
- Devour with Soulburst active.
- Cull at 4+ Souls, or Cull/Eradicate at 3 Voidfall stacks.
- Collapsing Star with 35+ Souls stored.
- Void Ray with fewer than 35 Souls stored, or if the form is about to end.
- Collapsing Star.
- Devour.
- Soul Immolation as you drop out of the form.
Why Void Ray matters inside the form: it costs no Fury there, has a 16-second hasted cooldown (14 with Voidpurge), and pauses your Fury drain while channeling and briefly after (Icy Veins). Use it on cooldown to stretch the window.
Soul Immolation as Annihilator: Method says use it only out of combat, as a defensive (it heals 24% of your max health over 5 seconds), or as Void Metamorphosis ends. Devour is stronger inside the form.
Use this single-target opener
From Method:
- Soul Immolation 2 seconds before the pull.
- Consume 1 second before the pull.
- Consume.
- Reap at 4+ Souls.
- Void Ray when available. Make it your last cast before Void Metamorphosis if it's ready, but don't delay the form for it.
- Void Metamorphosis, then Potion of Recklessness and your on-use trinket.
- Collapsing Star (the free one from Midnight's 4th point).
- Cull or Eradicate.
- Void Ray.
- Collapsing Star.
- Cull/Eradicate at 4+ Souls, then Devour, and continue the priority.
With Emptiness you often need two generation cycles before the first window. Icy Veins notes that the opener is long for that reason. If a Voidfall stack procs during the opener, Reap it before casting another Consume.
Devourer AoE rotation
Method's AoE priority:
Outside Void Metamorphosis:
- Consume with Soulburst active.
- Void Ray right before entering Void Metamorphosis.
- Void Metamorphosis.
- Eradicate with 8–10 Souls, if Moment of Craving is about to expire, or with 4+ Souls and 3 Voidfall stacks.
- Void Ray.
- Consume.
Inside Void Metamorphosis:
- Collapsing Star if you'd otherwise go above 40 Souls.
- Devour with Soulburst active.
- Collapsing Star.
- Eradicate with 10 Souls, if Moment of Craving is expiring, or with 4+ Souls and 3 Voidfall stacks.
- Void Ray.
- Devour.
- Soul Immolation as you leave the form.
The Eradicate smuggle: cast Void Ray just before Void Metamorphosis and carry the Eradicate proc into the form. Don't spend an available Voidfall stack right before entering if it costs you that Eradicate (Icy Veins).
Void-Scarred rotation differences
If you prefer Void-Scarred, or you're in Delves:
- Melee combo outside the form: The Hunt or Voidblade, then Hungering Slash, then Vengeful Retreat.
- Melee combo inside the form: Predator's Wake or Pierce the Veil, then Reaper's Toll, then Vengeful Retreat.
- Before the form: use Voidblade and The Hunt so Hungering Slash carries in and becomes Reaper's Toll. Voidblade resets when you enter.
- Collapsing Star timing: use Voidblade and The Hunt before Collapsing Star so you benefit from the resets and cooldown reduction it gives them. Icy Veins' in-form priority casts Collapsing Star at 30 Souls, after Void Ray, Reaper's Toll, Pierce the Veil and Predator's Wake.
- Vengeful Retreat is a minor part of the rotation (Icy Veins). Use it with Voidstep only when your positioning is secure.
- Opener: unlike Annihilator, it's fine to overcap Souls at the start of a Void-Scarred window.
Devourer BiS gear, tier set and trinkets
Get the tier set
The Season 2 set is Abyssal Doomhound's Pursuit (Icy Veins):
| Bonus | Effect |
|---|---|
| 2-piece | Reap on 4+ Soul Fragments has a 20% chance to make your next Consume instant and set off a Soulburst |
| 4-piece | Soulburst generates 2 Soul Fragments and grants Moment of Craving; Reap deals 10% more damage |
Cull and Eradicate trigger it at the same rate. After mid-season tuning, Icy Veins says you only play around it actively in single target.
The Catalyst keeps an item's secondary stats and cantrips in Season 2, so the item you feed in matters more than the slot. Icy Veins' best Catalyst inputs: Gaze of the Coiled Watcher (helm, Ula'tek), Frothing Venom Spaulders (shoulders, Vashnik), Chestwrap of Palpable Terror (chest, Kith'ix), Abyssal Doomhound's Studded Gauntlets (gloves, Entombed Sentinels), Coiled Hex Legguards (legs, Coiled Altar).
Pick trinkets
Icy Veins wants two passive trinkets in 12.1.5:
| Tier | Trinket | Type | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Twisted Horror's Tendril (Kith'ix) | Passive | Bulk Critical Strike; part of the strongest pair |
| S | Gebbo's Bottomless Bag (The Lost Explorers) | Passive | High-uptime stat buffs |
| A | Freightrunner's Flask | On-use | Best on-use; hold it for Void Metamorphosis |
| A | Wavecaller's Seastone | Passive | Second passive if you lack the Bag |
| A | Fang of Umbral Malignance | Passive | Frequent procs |
| A | Vile Vial of Volatile Venom | On-use | Second-best on-use |
| A | Ruby Whelp Shell | Proc | Train it 4× crit (alone) and 2× haste (in a group) |
| B | Drum of Renewed Bonds | Passive | Set it to Mastery at the Jan'alai altar in Zul'Aman |
For other high-priority Great Vault or Voidcore picks, Icy Veins lists Jan'thrazet, the Soul Fang; Aqirbane Reliquary; Gaze of the Coiled Watcher; Gebbo's Bottomless Bag; Twisted Horror's Tendril; and Chestwrap of Palpable Terror. Our Great Vault guide explains slot unlocks.
Get the best weapon
Icy Veins' top weapon is Jan'thrazet, the Soul Fang from Ula'tek, the Venomous Abyss final boss. Both weapon slots are equal for Devourer, but Jan'thrazet comes first for Ascendant Venomstone upgrades if you bonus-rolled it. Icy Veins warns that Ula'tek also drops a weaker trinket, Font of Venomous Rage, and Devourer can't avoid it with loot spec, so roll there with that in mind. Devourer uses warglaives, fist weapons, axes, daggers and swords; warglaives switch their primary stat to Intellect for Devourer.
Ascendant Venomstones (live since October 20) take a weapon, trinket or necklace to item level 340. Icy Veins' order: weapons, then both trinkets, then the necklace, and Myth-track items before Hero-track ones.
Craft in this order
Icy Veins' crafting order:
- Spellbreaker's Warglaive with Hunter's Ritual Stone. Warglaives let you switch specs.
- Silvermoon Agent's Deflectors (wrists) with Arcanoweave Lining.
- Silvermoon Agent's Sneakers (boots) with Arcanoweave Lining, once you have a second 344 weapon. Remove Hunter's Ritual Stone from the warglaive.
- Fill gaps, especially jewelry.
Use a Thalassian Missive of the Peerless (Critical Strike and Mastery) when the item doesn't fix its own stats. Each craft needs two Spark of Tides; our crafted gear guide covers where they come from.
Spend crests in this order
Weapons → trinkets → helm, chest, legs → shoulders, gloves, belt, boots. Each upgrade costs 20 crests. Blizzard removed the weekly Mistcrest cap with the October 20 hotfixes (Icy Veins summary), so you can now upgrade as fast as you can earn them. Our Season 2 gearing guide covers tracks.
Devourer stat priority, enchants and consumables
Stat priority (Method, 12.1.5): Intellect > Mastery > Haste ≥ Critical Strike >> Versatility.
- Mastery: Monster Within boosts all Cosmic damage, and the bonus is 33% higher inside Void Metamorphosis.
- Haste shortens Void Ray's channel, lowers its cooldown inside the form, and lowers Reap's cooldown with Umbral Blade. Icy Veins warns against stacking so much Haste that Potion of Recklessness starts granting Haste. Free Haste procs from Jan'thrazet, Gaze of the Coiled Watcher and Aqirbane Reliquary also lower its value.
- Critical Strike gets better with Calamitous (crit damage 240%) and the Midnight Apex.
- Versatility is last, but adds some damage reduction.
| Slot | Enchant (Method and Icy Veins' BiS list agree) |
|---|---|
| Head | Empowered Rune of Avoidance |
| Shoulders | Amirdrassil's Grace |
| Chest | Mark of the Worldsoul |
| Legs | Sunfire Silk Spellthread |
| Boots | Lynx's Dexterity |
| Rings | Eyes of the Eagle |
| Weapons | Rite of the Hash'ey (Method) |
| Consumable | Pick |
|---|---|
| Flask | Flask of the Magisters |
| Combat potion | Potion of Recklessness or Liquid Luster |
| Health potion | Concentrated Silvermoon Health Potion |
| Food | Harandar Celebration or Royal Roast |
| Weapon oil | Thalassian Phoenix Oil (both weapons) |
| Augment rune | Void-Touched Augment Rune |
Gems: use an Eversong Diamond (Powerful or Indecipherable) as your unique gem, and fill the remaining sockets with Mastery and Haste gems per your sim.
Race: Method says damage between Blood Elf, Night Elf and Void Elf is about the same. Shadowmeld makes Night Elf strong in Mythic+.
Always sim your own character; every source says so.
Devourer in Mythic+: utility and defensives
| Tool | Use |
|---|---|
| Disrupt | Interrupt; the Demon Muzzle talent adds magic damage reduction tied to your interrupts (Method) |
| Darkness | Group damage reduction during big hits |
| Consume Magic | Purge buffs. Icy Veins lists Healing Breeze, Bound by Shadow and Captain's Bulwark in this season's dungeons |
| Vengeful Retreat | Clears several debuffs, e.g. Frigid Roar from Frigid Maulers and Shadowfrost Bolt from Risen Hexxers |
| Soul Cleanse / Burn It Out | Talent for curse or disease dungeons (e.g. Burn It Out for Regurgitate on Rav'i) |
Defensively, Method highlights two Blur charges, passive magic reduction from Demonic Wards, leech from Soul Rending, and an absorb after Shift from First In, Last Out. Void Ray roots you while channeling, so finish or skip it before a mechanic forces you to move.
Devourer appeared in 1.8% of the world's top 2,000 timed keys on October 28 (Raider.IO), behind Havoc at 4.0%. It's a viable key spec, not a meta one at the very top. For dungeon routes, see our Season 2 Mythic+ guide and the interrupt coordination guide.
Devourer Demon Hunter in PvP
Devourer is B tier on our Midnight PvP tier list. It's ninth of 27 DPS specs in Solo Shuffle on Murlok's October 28 ladder, but 21st in 3v3 and 17th in 2v2, so Shuffle is its best bracket. On ArenaCoach's Shuffle ladder it wins exactly 50.0% of rounds over about 553,000 rounds. The October 27 hotfix raised Collapsing Star damage by 20% in PvP, which isn't in those ratings yet. Its arena strengths are the same as in PvE: mobility, Darkness and Blur, and a ranged kit that can still step into melee.
Common Devourer mistakes
- Reaping into a Fury overcap. Each Soul gives 4 Fury, so check before you Reap.
- Collecting Souls you can't use when you're at 50 and Void Metamorphosis isn't ready.
- Holding Void Ray inside the form. It pauses your Fury drain; use it on cooldown there (Icy Veins).
- Casting fewer than 4 Collapsing Stars per Annihilator window. That's Method's minimum.
- Stacking Haste until Potion of Recklessness rolls Haste. Icy Veins warns against it.
If you're returning, boosted, or on an alt
- Returning players: Devourer changed in 12.1.5. Void-Scarred now plays around a long, extended Void Metamorphosis with Emptiness, much like Annihilator; Collapsing Star no longer goes on cooldown when cancelled; and Voidpurge was buffed. Devourer's tier set was also retuned mid-season. Re-import a current build rather than reusing a Season 1 one.
- Boosted characters: a boosted character may come with talent points unspent. Check that all 4 Midnight Apex points are taken and that you've done the Omnium Folio quests, then use the Season 2 gearing guide to plan upgrades.
- Alts: craft the Spellbreaker's Warglaive first, since it works for every Demon Hunter spec. Put limited crests into weapons and trinkets. Run Delves as Void-Scarred for fast vault progress, and see the weekly checklist.
Other Season 2 spec guides: Elemental Shaman, Retribution Paladin and Arcane Mage. More Midnight guides are on the World of Warcraft hub.

FAQ
Is Devourer Demon Hunter good in Midnight Season 2? Yes in Mythic+, where Icy Veins calls its priority and AoE damage "incredibly strong." It's weaker in this season's raid, and it's B tier in PvP on our list.
Should I play Annihilator or Void-Scarred? Annihilator for raids and Mythic+ (Icy Veins, Method). Void-Scarred for Delves, or anywhere if you enjoy its melee combos and accept some lost damage when mechanics interrupt you.
What is the Devourer stat priority? Intellect > Mastery > Haste ≥ Critical Strike >> Versatility, per Method's 12.1.5 guide. Don't stack Haste so high that Potion of Recklessness rolls Haste.
How many Collapsing Stars should I cast per Void Metamorphosis? Icy Veins targets 4–5 as Annihilator, and Method says at least 4. Void-Scarred also extends the form for several stars, but you'll lose some to forced movement.
What is the best weapon for Devourer? Jan'thrazet, the Soul Fang from Ula'tek in The Venomous Abyss (Icy Veins). The crafted Spellbreaker's Warglaive is the best first craft.
Why does my Void Metamorphosis end so fast? You're running out of Fury. Use Void Ray on cooldown inside the form (it pauses the drain), keep Devouring between spenders, and take Emptiness.
