THE GUIDE

This Midnight crafted gear guide covers everything you need to plan Season 2 crafts on patch 12.1.5: how to earn Spark of Tides, which item level band each craft lands in, which slots to craft, the best embellishments, what each spec should craft first, and how crafted pieces fit Ascendant Venomstones. It's current to the October 20 hotfixes, which made Venomstones available and removed the weekly Mistcrest cap (Icy Veins hotfix summary).

Quick summary

  • Sparks: Spark of Tides is the Season 2 crafting reagent. You earn one per week from a hub weekly quest, and characters below the seasonal cap can pick up missing ones from max-level content. There are no fragments to combine this season.
  • Cost: most crafts take 2 Sparks; two-handed weapons take 4.
  • Item level: a Spark-only epic craft is 292–305. Add 80 Hero Mistcrests for 305–318 or 80 Myth Mistcrests for 318–331, depending on craft quality (1–5).
  • Embellishments: you can wear only two embellished items. Choose the two effects first, then put them in low-budget slots (bracers, belt, boots, cloak) unless the effect needs a weapon.
  • Recrafting: a crafted piece can be upgraded later with Hero or Myth Mistcrests, so a Spark spent early isn't wasted.
  • 12.1.5: max-quality Tidal crafted weapons, trinkets and necklaces can take Ascendant Venomstones once fully upgraded. A Myth-band craft goes from 331 to 338 (Method).

How to get Spark of Tides

Earn the weekly Spark

Route What to do Notes
Hub weekly quests Midnight: Vaults of Atal'Utek, Turn Back the Surge (Coiled Isle events), the Sparks of War PvP weekly These feed one capped Spark per week; doing all four does not give four
Catch-up drops Delves, Mythic+, raids, instanced PvP and some outdoor events can award missing Sparks while you're below the seasonal cap Chance-based; stops once you're caught up (Icy Veins)
Great Vault tokens taken instead of a Vault gear choice, can buy a Spark from the Silvermoon vault attendant Single source; check the vendor before you skip a gear choice
First Spark quest Your first Spark of the season starts the [80–90] Spark of Tides quest Warcraft Wiki

Track your count: every Spark you earn also grants Tidal Spark Dust, a tracking currency that counts Sparks earned against the season's cap. It doesn't go down when you spend a Spark. Check it in your Currency tab. If Dust is below the cap, catch-up is active for that character.

Launch compensation: a September 15 hotfix mailed missing Sparks to players who were behind, delivered to their bags on login (Warcraft Wiki).

Know the Spark rules

  • Sparks are bind on pickup. You can't mail them to an alt, and the character who will wear the item supplies the Spark in a crafting order.
  • At one Spark a week, you can craft one standard piece every two weeks.
  • A Spark is consumed by the craft.

Crafted gear item level: bands and quality

Quality Spark only (Tidal) + 80 Hero Mistcrests + 80 Myth Mistcrests
1 292 305 318
2 296 309 322
3 299 312 325
4 302 315 328
5 305 318 331

Rare crafts (no Spark) can use 80 Adventurer or Veteran Mistcrests to reach 279 or 292 (Icy Veins). They're worth it only for fresh alts.

What the numbers mean:

  1. The crests set the band, and quality sets where you land in it. Quality depends on the crafter's skill, specialization, Concentration and material quality. A quality-4 Myth craft stops at 328.
  2. 80 Mistcrests equals four upgrade ranks at 20 crests each. Have them saved before you place the order. Blizzard removed the weekly Mistcrest cap on October 20, so saving 80 Myth Mistcrests is now limited only by how much you play.
  3. Crafted gear tops out below the best drops. You pay for crafted gear's control: you pick the slot, the secondary stats and an embellishment.

Which slots to craft

Slot Craft it? Why
Weapon (one-handed / off-hand) Often first Biggest immediate gain; can carry Hunter's Ritual Stone or a Darkmoon Sigil. Raid weapons with special effects may replace it later
Two-handed weapon Early only, with care Costs 4 Sparks (two standard crafts) and is easy to replace with raid or Vault loot
Bracers, belt, boots, cloak Best long-term Low stat budget, so the item level gap matters least; the usual home for embellishments
Rings, necklace Situational Exact secondary stats; good when your jewelry rolled badly. Crafted necklaces at max quality can take Venomstones
Head, shoulders, chest, hands, legs Usually avoid Tier and Catalyst slots; check your tier plan first

Use a Missive. Unless the recipe already fixes its stats, add the Thalassian Missive matching your two best secondary stats. For example, Icy Veins uses the Missive of the Peerless (Critical Strike + Mastery) for Devourer crafts.

Decide when to craft: craft now if the piece replaces a weak item, completes a 2- or 4-Spark breakpoint, and won't be replaced before you can recraft it.

Best embellishments in Midnight Season 2

You can wear two embellished items. Some items come with an effect built in and can't be changed. Others take an embellishment as an optional reagent when you craft or recraft them (Method).

The five new Season 2 embellishments

Embellishment Effect Fits Profession Recipe source
Adorned Fang Chance to gain Haste; higher chance as the target's health drops Any crafted slot Leatherworking Twin Fangs, The Venomous Abyss
Snakeskin Lining Applies Corrosive Acid that can burst and splash nearby enemies Any crafted slot Tailoring Zul'jan, Altar of Fangs
Polished Ammolite Crits build stacks of Critical Strike; at max stacks, crits can deal burst damage Any crafted slot Jewelcrafting World drop
Hunter's Ritual Stone Chance for 165 of a random secondary stat for 15 sec; 50% stronger while hunting Prey outdoors Blacksmithing weapons only Blacksmithing Construct V'anore, Prey Rank 2
Coiled Snake-Eye Chance for 82 of a random secondary stat for 15 sec; your highest stat if triggered by a crit Engineering guns only Engineering World drop

Icy Veins counts four new armor and weapon embellishments; the Engineering-only Coiled Snake-Eye is the fifth. Icy Veins' spec pages warn that none of the new ones could be tested on the PTR, and that Hunter's Ritual Stone was nerfed after launch but "remains very strong."

Season 1 embellishments still in use

Embellishment Type
Arcanoweave Lining Optional reagent, most armor
Darkmoon Sigil: Hunt Optional reagent, weapons
Loa Worshiper's Band Pre-embellished ring
Stabilizing Gemstone Bandolier Optional reagent, other crafted slot
Sunfire Silk Lining Optional reagent
Arcanoweave / Sunfire 2-sets Pre-embellished cloth and cloak

Change your embellishments:

  • Swap: recraft the item with the new embellishment in the optional reagent slot. No keychain is needed.
  • Remove: recraft with a Lucky Keychain from the Auction House.

What to craft first by spec

Each spec's first crafts differ, mostly on whether a weapon is worth the Sparks. These are Icy Veins' current 12.1.5 picks for the specs we cover:

Spec Craft first Then Note
Blood Death Knight Masterwork Sin'dorei Band Spellbreaker's Bracers Crafted two-hander only as a last resort if you can't get Maze-roa
Devourer Demon Hunter Spellbreaker's Warglaive with Hunter's Ritual Stone Silvermoon Agent's Deflectors, then Sneakers, with Arcanoweave Lining Warglaives work for every Demon Hunter spec
Elemental Shaman Aln'hara Cane with Hunter's Ritual Stone (short-term power) Or skip the weapon: Farstrider's Plated Bracers plus belt or boots with Arcanoweave Lining The cane is replaced once you get Jan'thrazet and a Myth shield
Restoration Shaman Spellbreaker's Rebuke with Arcanoweave Lining, if you lack a Myth shield Farstrider's Plated Bracers, then Razor Talons, with Arcanoweave Lining New alts can start with Aln'hara Cane
Holy Paladin Magister's Mana Sword with Darkmoon Sigil: Hunt Spellbreaker's Rebuke with Arcanoweave Lining Skip the sword if you'll clear Mythic raid early
Retribution Paladin Blood Knight's Warblade with Hunter's Ritual Stone (optional) Loa Worshiper's Band, then a low-budget slot with Stabilizing Gemstone Bandolier Upgrade the two-hander to 331 with Myth Mistcrests; skip it if you'll bonus-roll weapons

The spec guides explain the reasoning: Blood Death Knight, Devourer Demon Hunter, Elemental Shaman, Restoration Shaman, Holy Paladin and Retribution Paladin.

Example: an Elemental Shaman with four Sparks and a raid team that bonus-rolls Ula'tek every week. The cane would be replaced by Jan'thrazet within a few weeks, so Icy Veins' "longer view" applies: spend the four Sparks on bracers and a belt with Arcanoweave Lining instead.

Place the order and recraft later

  1. Check reagents on the character who will wear the item: Sparks, Mistcrests if you're adding them, Missive, embellishment, and recipe materials.
  2. Choose the order type. Personal and guild orders can set a minimum quality, which matters for epic crafts.
  3. Confirm with the crafter: recipe, armor type, stats, quality target, crest infusion, embellishment, and commission.
  4. Collect the item from your mailbox, equip it, and upgrade it as normal.

Plan your Sparks over the season

Spark count Sensible use
2 First standard craft: usually a weapon or your first embellished armor piece
4 Second embellished piece, or a two-handed weapon if it's a big upgrade
6+ Fill a weak slot (often jewelry with poor stats), or rebuild after a raid weapon drops

Later in the season:

  • Once your Mistcrests allow it, recraft finished pieces to the Myth band (318–331).
  • After 12.1.5, finish upgrading max-quality Tidal weapons, trinkets and necklaces so they can take Ascendant Venomstones. Ten stones take a Myth-band craft from 331 to 338 and a Hero-band craft from 318 to 325 (Method). An Ascended item can't be upgraded again, so finish crests first. Venomstones drop from Heroic and Mythic raid bosses, +10 and higher keys, Tier 11 Bountiful Delves and Nightmare Prey; our Season 2 gearing guide has the full list.
  • Compare each craft with what the Great Vault offers that week. A Myth 1/6 vault piece starts at 318, below a quality-5 Myth craft at 331, but it doesn't cost Sparks.

If you're returning, boosted, or on an alt

  • Returning players: check Tidal Spark Dust first. If you're below the cap, run Delves, Mythic+ or raids on that character for catch-up drops, and do one hub weekly each reset. Check your bags for Sparks from the September 15 hotfix.
  • Boosted characters at 90: don't spend Sparks on a 292 craft that a Delve or Mythic+ drop would replace in a week. Rare crafts with Veteran Mistcrests (up to 292) are cheaper filler.
  • Alts: Sparks don't transfer between characters, so each alt earns its own and gets its own catch-up. Use your main's profession and Concentration through a personal order to guarantee quality. See the weekly checklist for the hub weekly.

FAQ

How do I get Spark of Tides? Complete one eligible hub weekly quest each week. If your character is behind the season cap, Delves, Mythic+, raids, instanced PvP and some outdoor events can also award missing Sparks.

What is the max item level for crafted gear in Season 2? 331, from a quality-5 craft with 80 Myth Mistcrests. A Spark-only craft is 292–305, and adding Hero Mistcrests gives 305–318.

How many embellishments can I wear? Two at once. Crafted items without an embellishment don't count, so there's no limit on wearing crafted gear itself.

Should I craft a weapon first in Season 2? Usually, because the weapon slot gives the biggest gain. Skip it if you'll bonus-roll a boss that drops your best weapon soon, and think twice about a two-hander, which costs 4 Sparks. See the spec table above.

Are rings and necklaces worth crafting? Yes when your jewelry rolled poor secondary stats. Crafted rings let you pick both stats, and Loa Worshiper's Band is a pre-embellished ring. A max-quality crafted necklace can also take Ascendant Venomstones.

What's the best embellishment in Midnight Season 2? Hunter's Ritual Stone (Blacksmithing weapons) and Adorned Fang are the strongest new ones for the specs that use them. Sim your own character.
