THE GUIDE

This Blood Death Knight guide covers Midnight Season 2 on patch 12.1.5: which hero tree to play, the opener and both rotations, how to plan defensives, stats, enchants, the tier set, trinkets and best weapon, and how Blood fits Mythic+ and PvP. Blizzard's October 27 class tuning didn't touch Blood (the only Death Knight change was a PvP nerf to Unholy's San'layn), so the numbers below still hold (Icy Veins hotfix summary). Builds and priorities follow Icy Veins' Blood Death Knight guide (updated October 12) and Method, cited inline.

Quick summary

  • Play San'layn by default. Icy Veins calls it "a sensible default," and Method recommends it "in all content." Deathbringer is simpler and has a beginner build.
  • Stats depend on your hero tree. San'layn wants Haste up to about 30% unbuffed (Icy Veins). Deathbringer puts Haste last.
  • Plan your Mythic+ pulls around the 1:30 window. Gift of the San'layn is where the "absurd" damage comes from.
  • Plan defensives before the pull. Vampiric Blood, Icebound Fortitude and Anti-Magic Shell cover different damage types. Icy Veins says to plan cooldowns so you "not die" first.
  • Top trinkets: Voracious Heart of Ula'tek and Merektha's Fang are S tier on Icy Veins for raid and Mythic+.
  • Blood is the best Mythic+ tank right now. It tanked 78.1% of the world's top 2,000 timed keys on October 28 (Raider.IO), and it's S on our Mythic+ healer and tank tier list.

Blood DK strengths and weaknesses

Strengths Weaknesses
Self-healing through Death Strike, so you recover from big hits on your own No unique party-wide buff, the only tank without one (Icy Veins)
One of the strongest magic defensives in the game (Anti-Magic Shell) and an uncapped cheat death (Purgatory) Damage taken is spiky and hard to predict, especially with the random apex procs
Very high damage in AoE and cleave; Icy Veins calls Blood "slightly overtuned" San'layn needs a "notoriously harder pull set-up" than Deathbringer
Death Grip and Gorefiend's Grasp shine when a fight is built around them Little mobility beyond two Death's Advance charges, and Anti-Magic Zone is now weak

That mix is why Blood rewards planning. If you map defensives to each hit before the pull, the spikes stop mattering.

Best Blood DK build: San'layn or Deathbringer

Content Pick Why Source
Raid, single target San'layn or Deathbringer They're close right now, partly because of an Echoing Fury bug, so gear and the encounter decide Icy Veins
Raid, 2+ targets San'layn Dominates once a second target lives longer than Reaper's Mark takes to detonate Icy Veins
Mythic+ San'layn "Absurd" damage when you plan pulls around Gift of the San'layn every 1:30 Icy Veins, Method
Learning, delves Deathbringer Simpler. Icy Veins' entry-level build skips the optional active abilities Icy Veins, Method

Icy Veins says Deathbringer falls behind in AoE and priority damage because Blood Plague and Exterminate's AoE weren't buffed. It also notes that The Blood is Life is currently doing more damage than intended because of a bug. Use the in-game import button with Icy Veins' strings: Single Target San'layn, Mythic+ San'layn and Delves Deathbringer.

Use the flex points

  • San'layn raid: Bloodied Blade and Deadly Reach are the flex points. For pure single target, move Bloodied Blade to Consumption or Deadly Reach to Bloodworms (Icy Veins).
  • San'layn Mythic+: takes Umbilicus Eternus and Deadly Reach, with Bloodied Blade as the last flex. Umbilicus can go into Sanguinary Burst for extra burst damage.
  • More defense: swap Relish in Blood for Foul Bulwark and Bloodied Blade for Improved Vampiric Blood.

Understand the apex talent

Method describes Dance of Midnight in three ranks:

  1. Rank 1. Parried attacks during Dancing Rune Weapon buff Heart Strike.
  2. Rank 2. Each Dancing Rune Weapon adds damage and damage reduction.
  3. Rank 3. Each Rune you spend has about a 12% chance to summon a Dancing Rune Weapon.

Icy Veins' rotation uses these procs to gain extra Bone Shield charges without overcapping. For runes, see our Omnium Folio guide.

Blood DK rotation: open the pull

Icy Veins' opener:

  1. Pre-place Death and Decay where you'll fight, without targeting an enemy. A Dance of Midnight proc would spawn a weapon and pull your target.
  2. Just before the pull, cast Death's Caress for two Bone Shield charges and Blood Plague.
  3. Cast Reaper's Mark and Raise Dead. As Deathbringer you can macro them together.
  4. Cast Dancing Rune Weapon.
  5. Cast Blood Boil to refresh Blood Plague and apply the copies from your Rune Weapons.
  6. Cast Marrowrend to spend the Exterminate charge from Dancing Rune Weapon.
  7. Keep casting Death Strike, Blood Boil and Heart Strike until Dancing Rune Weapon fades. Use Death Strike when you need healing or are above 75 Runic Power.

Method's San'layn raid opener uses Dancing Rune Weapon and Raise Dead together with your combat potion, then Blood Boil.

San'layn rotation and priority

During Gift of the San'layn

Icy Veins says Gift "massively amplifies" Death Strike and gives you Vampiric Strike for the whole window:

  1. Death Strike if you're about to die, above 70 Runic Power, or Coagulopathy is about to fade.
  2. Blood Boil once in Dancing Rune Weapon to apply the plague copies.
  3. Blood Boil in AoE (5 or more targets) to keep charges rolling.
  4. Death and Decay on a Crimson Scourge proc when Visceral Strength isn't active.
  5. Keep 1+ Bone Shield charges, using Marrowrend only if you planned wrong.
  6. Vampiric Strike as your filler.

Outside Gift

  1. Death Strike by the same rules.
  2. Dancing Rune Weapon on cooldown.
  3. Death and Decay on Crimson Scourge or at 4+ targets.
  4. Vampiric Strike if it's available.
  5. Empower Consumption to rank 1, unless Blood Plague has over 40 seconds left and you have no Dance of Midnight proc.
  6. Blood Boil on a Boiling Point proc.
  7. Death Grip or Death's Caress if Bone Shield is about to expire or you're out of range.
  8. Marrowrend strategically, ideally during an apex Dancing Rune Weapon proc.
  9. Blood Boil to keep charges rolling.

Method adds two rules for both hero trees: never cap Blood Boil charges, and keep 3 Runes recharging as often as possible.

Deathbringer rotation and priority

Reaper's Mark and Dancing Rune Weapon line up every 90 seconds. Cast Reaper's Mark first (Icy Veins):

  1. Death Strike if you're about to die, above 70 Runic Power, or Coagulopathy is fading.
  2. Marrowrend if an Exterminate proc is about to expire (under 3 seconds).
  3. Empower Consumption to rank 1 on cooldown when Dancing Rune Weapon is down.
  4. Reaper's Mark, then Dancing Rune Weapon, on cooldown.
  5. Marrowrend with Exterminate. On single target, use it freely. In AoE, use it outside Dancing Rune Weapon, since the scythes aren't copied.
  6. Blood Boil on Boiling Point.
  7. Death Grip or Death's Caress to save Bone Shield.

Blood DK defensives and cooldowns

Cooldown Effect Use it Source
Vampiric Blood +30% health and +30% healing received for 10 seconds Proactively, before damage. It's your most versatile cooldown Icy Veins
Icebound Fortitude 30% damage reduction for 8 seconds Before known heavy boss abilities Icy Veins
Anti-Magic Shell Absorbs magic damage, and more health makes it stronger Time it on magic hits, ideally inside Vampiric Blood Icy Veins
Anti-Magic Zone 15% magic damage reduction, including for you Often forgotten for self-defense Icy Veins
Lichborne 15% leech and immunity to charm, fear and sleep for 10 seconds Situational, and lets Death Coil heal you Icy Veins

Icy Veins' workflow for a new fight:

  1. Map each big hit to a cooldown before the pull, using logs or your own first attempt.
  2. If you run out, ask for a group external such as Blessing of Sacrifice.
  3. Fill any remaining gap with an on-use defensive trinket.
  4. As a last resort, swap rings or neck for Versatility-heavy pieces. Losing item level cancels the gain.
  5. Keep Bone Shield at 5+ stacks and spend resources the same way whether you play aggressively or defensively. Only cooldown use changes.

Example. A boss casts a big magic blast every 40 seconds and a physical combo every 60. The tank plans Anti-Magic Shell for each blast, rotates Vampiric Blood and Icebound Fortitude on the physical combos, and asks the Paladin for Blessing of Sacrifice on the one overlap left. That's the order Icy Veins recommends.

Blood DK stat priority, enchants and consumables

Hero tree Icy Veins Method
San'layn Str > Haste (about 30% unbuffed) > Crit > Mastery > Vers Str > Haste > Crit = Vers = Mastery
Deathbringer Str > Crit > Mastery > Vers > Haste Str > Crit = Vers = Mastery > Haste

Item level usually beats secondary stats on Strength gear, because Strength gives bonus armor through Bone Shield and some parry (Icy Veins). Method notes that Crit converts 1:1 into parry, and Mastery feeds Blood Shield against physical damage.

Slot Icy Veins Method (best)
Head Empowered Blessing of Speed Rune of Avoidance
Shoulders Akil'zon's Swiftness Amirdrassil's Grace
Chest Mark of the Worldsoul Mark of the Worldsoul
Legs Forest Hunter's Armor Kit Forest Hunter's Armor Kit
Boots Farstrider's Hunt Lynx's Dexterity
Rings Silvermoon's Tenacity (Deathbringer), Nature's Fury (San'layn) Eyes of the Eagle
Weapon Rune of Sanguination (Fallen Crusader for Deathbringer at 10+ targets) Rune of Sanguination

Consumables (Method): Harandar Celebration or Royal Roast food, Flask of the Shattered Sun for Deathbringer or Flask of the Blood Knights for San'layn, and Potion of Recklessness or Light's Potential. Method calls the differences between races "very minimal."

Blood DK BiS gear, best weapon and trinkets

Icy Veins says raiders' chest and legs come from the Venomous Abyss (10 item levels higher, plus a special effect on the legs), and the head from Kith'ix. Catalyzing a piece keeps its stats, so the fourth tier slot can be any piece. The tier set is Baleful Grave-Knight's Lament (Icy Veins):

  • 2-piece: Death Strike grants a Strength stack (0.5% each, up to 10). At 10 stacks, your next Marrowrend spends them for 10% Strength for 10 seconds.
  • 4-piece: that Marrowrend also grants three extra Bone Shield charges and deals heavy AoE damage near your target.
Tier Trinkets (Icy Veins, raid and M+)
S Voracious Heart of Ula'tek (10 item levels higher, lines up with Reaper's Mark and Gift), Merektha's Fang (you can walk during the channel with Death's Advance)
A Keeper's Seething Core, Gebbo's Bottomless Bag, Zul'jin's Guillotine Technique, Twisted Horror's Tendril
B Effigy of Ula'tek's Faithful, Tumor of the Swarm, Sapling of the Dawnroot, Seed of the Devouring Wild, Vile Vial of Volatile Venom
Emergency First Mate's Shellward (90 seconds), Mchimba's Ritual Bandages (60 seconds). Icy Veins says not to use these by default

Best weapon: Maze-roa, Warlord's Fury from the Coiled Altar in The Venomous Abyss. It's a cantrip weapon that pairs with Zul'jin's Guillotine Technique from the same boss. If you can't kill that boss on Heroic or Mythic, Icy Veins suggests a crafted two-hander with Hunter's Ritual Stone or Darkmoon Sigil: Hunt, as a last resort or for alts. For early crafts it lists Masterwork Sin'dorei Band, then Spellbreaker's Bracers. Our crafted gear guide explains Sparks and embellishments.

Ascendant Venomstones (live since October 20) upgrade a weapon, necklace or trinket to item level 340, and crafted items to 338. Icy Veins' order is weapon first, then both trinkets, then the necklace. Spend crests in this order: weapon, trinkets, then helm, chest and legs, then the rest.

If you don't raid, Icy Veins says Temple of Sethraliss is likely your go-to for Merektha's Fang and three possible tier pieces. Patch 12.1 Nebulous Voidcores from the Great Vault let you bonus-roll a boss of your choice, and items you already got from bonus rolls won't repeat. Raiders should also bonus-roll Kith'ix for the helm. For upgrade tracks, see our gearing guide.

Blood DK in Mythic+: utility and pulls

  • Mind Freeze is a 15-yard kick. Icy Veins recommends a focus macro, /cast [@focus,exists,nodead] [] Mind Freeze, and treats Coldthirst as an optional pick. Take it only if your group needs a shorter kick cooldown from you.
  • Asphyxiate is a ranged 5-second stun on a 45-second cooldown (Icy Veins).
  • Blinding Sleet disorients enemies in front of you for up to 5 seconds, then slows them 50%.
  • Death Grip is a soft stop on casts, with two charges through Death's Echo. Most enemies just recast.
  • Gorefiend's Grasp pulls enemies within 15 yards to a target and silences them for 3 seconds. Icy Veins says never cast it on yourself.
  • Control Undead turns an undead enemy into a pet. Icy Veins has a re-control macro.

Wowhead also values Death Grip in this season's dungeon pool. Plan your kicks with our interrupt coordination guide, and if you're pushing, read the push guide.

Example. On a big San'layn pull, the tank gathers two packs as Gift of the San'layn comes off cooldown. They use Gorefiend's Grasp on a caster in the middle, not on themselves, then press Dancing Rune Weapon and Blood Boil once, and use Vampiric Strike as the filler while the group's AoE lands.

Blood DK in PvP

Blood is a battleground tank, not an arena spec. On our Midnight PvP tier list it's B tier, third of six tanks on the Battleground Blitz ladder (Murlok, October 28), about 250 points behind Guardian Druid and Protection Warrior. Its value there is Death Grip and Chains of Ice to pull and slow flag carriers, plus Death Strike healing to survive while holding an objective. Blizzard's October 27 PvP tuning didn't change Blood.

Leveling as Blood DK

Icy Veins' leveling guide says Blood levels very comfortably: tank self-sustain from Blood Plague and Death Strike lets you pull large groups in the open world, and tank queues in the dungeon finder are near-instant. Take the highest item level drop every time, use heirlooms if you have them, and swap to Rune of Unending Thirst for the speed burst on kills. Our Midnight leveling guide covers the 80–90 route.

Common Blood DK mistakes

  1. Targeting an enemy while pre-placing Death and Decay. A Dance of Midnight proc spawns a weapon that pulls it (Icy Veins).
  2. Spending Death Strike on a timer instead of on damage. Use it when you need healing, above 70 Runic Power, or when Coagulopathy is about to fade.
  3. Letting Bone Shield drop below 5 stacks. It's armor, and most of your physical mitigation.
  4. Casting Gorefiend's Grasp on yourself. Icy Veins says to cast it on a caster in the middle of the pack instead.
  5. Pulling as San'layn without Gift ready. The spec's damage comes from the 1:30 Gift of the San'layn window, so plan big pulls around it.

Boosted, returning and alt players

  • Returning players: Midnight adds hero trees and the Dance of Midnight apex talent. Start with Icy Veins' Deathbringer entry-level build, then move to San'layn once you can plan pulls around the 1:30 window.
  • Boosted or catch-up characters: item level first (Icy Veins). Use Voidcores on the trinket boss you need most.
  • Alts: keep the defensive variant (Foul Bulwark, Improved Vampiric Blood) until you know the dungeons.

FAQ

Is Blood Death Knight good in Midnight Season 2? Yes. It tanked 78.1% of the world's top 2,000 timed keys on October 28 (Raider.IO) and is S tier on our Mythic+ tank list. Icy Veins calls it slightly overtuned in AoE and cleave.

Should I play San'layn or Deathbringer? San'layn by default (Icy Veins, Method). Deathbringer is easier to play and close on single target, so it's a good learning build.

What is the Blood DK stat priority? For San'layn, Icy Veins lists Strength, then Haste up to about 30% unbuffed, then Crit, Mastery and Versatility. Deathbringer puts Haste last. Item level usually beats secondary stats.

What is the best weapon for Blood Death Knight? Maze-roa, Warlord's Fury from the Coiled Altar in The Venomous Abyss. Without it, Icy Veins suggests a crafted two-hander as a fallback.

What are the best Blood DK trinkets? Voracious Heart of Ula'tek and Merektha's Fang, which are S tier on Icy Veins. Upgrade them with Ascendant Venomstones after your weapon.

Is Blood Death Knight hard to play? The Deathbringer build is one of the simpler tank setups. San'layn is harder because you have to plan pulls around the 1:30 Gift window, and Icy Veins calls its pull setup "notoriously harder."
