WoW Forever Graphics Settings: Best Settings for FPS, Specs
WoW Forever graphics settings: best settings for FPS by GPU tier, Classic vs Enhanced, system requirements, the GPU cutoff and fixes for fog and crashes.

In this guide 13 sections
WoW Forever isn't Classic Era with sharper textures. It runs a new renderer with volumetric fog, flowing water, secondary lighting and HD models, and its minimum specs sit close to modern WoW. This WoW Forever graphics settings guide covers whether your PC can run it, how to choose between the Classic and Enhanced presets, what each option costs in FPS and GPU load, three ready-made setups, how to find your bottleneck, and fixes for the crashes and slowdowns players hit in the beta. Forever launches on November 4, 2026, so set this up before launch night queues.
Quick summary
- Check your GPU architecture first. Forever needs AMD GCN 1, NVIDIA Maxwell or Intel Skylake or newer. A GTX 780 can't run it, but a GTX 750 Ti can (Blizzard). It also needs an SSD with 128 GB free.
- Secondary Lighting and Compute Effects are the heaviest new options. Players testing the beta report that both raise GPU load far more than they cut FPS (Blizzard Forums community thread). Lower them first on a weak card.
- Ray Traced Shadows is gone for now. Blizzard removed the option on October 1 and says it will come back once it works properly (Kaivax).
- Best settings for FPS on a mid-range card: Enhanced preset at native resolution, an FPS cap, Secondary Lighting Fair, Compute Effects Medium, Shadows Low to Medium and CMAA 2 anti-aliasing. Classic and Enhanced are only starting presets, and you can change each part afterward (WoW Handbook).
- Most crashes have a settings fix. Set Secondary Lighting to Fair, or switch the Graphics API to DirectX 11 (Forever Codex, community workarounds).
WoW Forever system requirements: can your PC run it?
Three requirements are hard limits: the SSD, the GPU architecture and a DirectX 12 card. Miss any one and the game won't run. Blizzard points to the Battle.net Shop listing for the full specs, and this table matches the copy on the WoW Handbook requirements page (updated October 24):
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | SSD, 128 GB free (no hard drives) | Same |
| Memory | 8 GB | 16 GB |
| GPU architecture | AMD GCN 1, NVIDIA Maxwell, Intel Skylake | – |
| Windows OS | Windows 10 64-bit, May 2019 Update | Windows 11 |
| Windows CPU | 4 cores at 3.0 GHz (Intel Haswell or AMD Zen) | 8 performance cores at 5.2 GHz boost (Core Ultra Series 2 or Zen 5) |
| Windows GPU | DirectX 12, 4 GB: GTX 10 series, RDNA 1 or Iris Xe2-LPG | DirectX 12, 8 GB: RTX 40 series, RDNA 3 or Arc B-Series |
| Mac | macOS 12, Apple M2 (8 GB) or 9th-gen Intel (Coffee Lake) | macOS 15, Apple M4 (16 GB) |
| Display | 1280 × 720 | 1280 × 720 |
Some pages list a 6-core, 4.0 GHz Coffee Lake or Zen 2 processor as the Windows minimum. That matches modern WoW's Midnight requirement, not Forever's. Forever's Windows minimum is the 4-core, 3.0 GHz Haswell or Zen line above, and Coffee Lake appears only on the Mac side.
Know the GPU cutoff
| Vendor | Oldest supported architecture | Works | Doesn't work |
|---|---|---|---|
| AMD | GCN 1 (2012) | Radeon HD 7850 | Radeon HD 6950 |
| NVIDIA | Maxwell (2014) | GTX 750, 750 Ti, 9xx | GTX 760, 770, 780, GTX 8xxM laptops |
| Intel | Skylake (2015) | HD Graphics 530 | HD Graphics 6000 |
Blizzard's GPU requirements post says the cutoff exists because the new look relies on "RGBA16F UAV support in compute shaders." It also warns that these cards are "still well below the minimum requirements." Clearing the cutoff means the game starts. It doesn't mean it runs well. To check your card, open Settings › System › Display › Advanced display, or Device Manager › Display adapters (Blizzard).
Classic vs Enhanced graphics: which preset to pick
The first time you log in, the game asks you to choose a preset.
| Option | Classic | Enhanced |
|---|---|---|
| Character models | SD | HD |
| Quest POIs | Off | On |
| Objective blobs | Off | On |
| One Bag | Off | On |
| Transmog | Off | On |
WoW Handbook confirms that Classic Mode turns Transmog off, and that you can turn it back on later at a transmogrifier. Both say these are starting choices, not locks. Our Transmog guide explains the rules.
HD or SD models? HD models use restored Classic animations (WoW Handbook). WoW Handbook says crowded cities and raids are where the difference "shows up first." Our take: pick HD, and switch to SD only if cities still stutter after you lower the heavier options below.
Which WoW Forever settings affect FPS the most
A beta tester on the Blizzard Forums tested each option for its effect on FPS and on GPU utilization (an RX 7600 and Ryzen 3600X at 1440p, community data). Those aren't the same thing. FPS is how smooth the game looks. Utilization is how hard your card works, which matters for heat, noise, laptops and crashes.
| Option | Hits FPS | Hits GPU load | Our starting value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Secondary Lighting | Some | Much more | Fair on mid-range cards, lower on weak ones |
| Compute Effects (volumetric fog) | Some | Much more | Medium. Disabled on weak cards |
| Shadow Quality | Heavily, even at low settings | High and above also raise load | Low to Medium |
| SSAO | Yes | Less | Low to Medium |
| Depth Effects | Yes | Less | Medium |
| Bloom Intensity | Yes | Less | Slider in Advanced since Oct 15 (Kaivax) |
| Spell Density | Yes | Less | Keep important spells visible |
| Particle Density | Only at the highest settings | – | Medium to High, for readability |
| Texture Resolution | Little | Mostly VRAM | High unless VRAM is short |
| Legacy and PBR Liquid Detail | Little | Little | Medium to High |
| View Distance, Environment Detail, Ground Clutter | Some | Little | View Distance high, Ground Clutter Medium |
| Physics Interactions | Yes | Heavily | Low |
| Triple Buffering | Raises FPS and smooths stutter | Raises load | On if you have headroom |
| Resample Quality | Only below native resolution | – | Run at native |
| Target FPS | Lowers detail on the fly to hold a target | – | Off for questing; optional for raids |
*FPS and load columns are one player's results on one system (Blizzard Forums community thread).
The same tester suggests watching GPU utilization in Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc › Performance › 3D) and leaving 20 to 30% headroom in the open world, with more for raids.

Set up raid and battleground settings
Forever has separate raid graphics settings that can take over in group content. A Blizzard developer (Rommax) confirmed that build 70245 fixed a bug where Secondary Lighting used the raid settings even when they were turned off (WoW Forever Wiki). Set those raid settings to your low-end column before raids open December 9. Our raids guide and PvP guide cover where you'll need it.
On a Hardcore character, a frame drop can cost you the character, so use the stable column there even in the open world. Dungeons full of water and fog, such as the Drowned City, are good places to test whether Compute Effects and Liquid Detail hold up.
Lower settings in the right order
If FPS is bad, lower these in order and recheck after each step:
- Secondary Lighting to Fair (biggest GPU load, community)
- Compute Effects to Medium or Disabled (fog, community)
- Shadow Quality to Low (the player test agree)
- SSAO and Depth Effects to Low
- Ground Clutter and Environment Detail
- Physics Interactions to Low
- Spell Density, but keep boss and ground effects visible
- View Distance
- SD character models
The recommended CPU's 8 performance cores at 5.2 GHz show how much Forever leans on the processor (Blizzard).
How to get more FPS: find your bottleneck first
Lowering settings only helps when the graphics card is the limit. Test before you change anything:
- Turn on the frame counter. Ctrl+R toggles WoW's built-in framerate display.
- Test where it hurts. An empty field tells you little. Stand in a busy capital at peak time or in a new zone with heavy foliage, such as Mount Hyjal.
- Read GPU utilization. If the 3D graph in Task Manager sits near 100%, your card is the limit, so work down the list above. If it sits well below that and FPS is still low, the CPU is the limit.
- For a CPU limit, graphics options barely help. Lower View Distance, Ground Clutter and Spell Density, which add work for the processor, and cap FPS so frame times stay even.
Example: a player on a GTX 1060 gets 70 FPS questing but 25 in a capital. GPU load in the capital is only 60%, so the CPU is the limit. Dropping Secondary Lighting won't help much there, but a 60 FPS cap and lower Ground Clutter and View Distance will make it steadier.
Fix common problems
| Problem | Who it affects | Fix | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Too much fog | Everyone, plus FPS on older cards | Compute Effects: Disabled thins it. /console volumeFog 0 removes it, and players report it also removes sun rays |
Forever Codex (community) |
| Crashes or black screens on AMD | Radeon RX 7000 and 9000 on DirectX 12 | At character select, Secondary Lighting: Fair. If that fails, Advanced › Graphics API: DirectX 11, then restart | Forever Codex |
| "Unable to start up 3D acceleration" | DirectX 12 on any vendor | Graphics API: DirectX 11, then restart. Check your GPU is supported | Forever Codex |
| Mac freezes entering the world | Apple silicon | Update the game, then try Secondary Lighting: Fair at character select. Reset options from the Battle.net app if needed | Forever Codex; WoW Forever Wiki (player workaround, not confirmed) |
| GPU load spikes after a zone change | Secondary Lighting below High | Toggle it to High, Apply, then back. Reported on build 70205 | Blizzard Forums (player report) |
| Extra bright fog at low shadows | Low shadow settings | Fixed in the October 15 build | Kaivax |
| Odd Mac shadows | Mac | Developer said they should be fixed in the October 8 build. MSAA was disabled on Mac while bugs were fixed | WoW Forever Wiki, citing Rommax |
WoW Forever graphics changes during the beta
| Build | Change | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sept 24 | Removed a setting that could disable fog "in an unintended manner"; fixed a memory leak that slowly cut performance; fixed Mac water display | Kaivax |
| Oct 1 | Removed the Ray Traced Shadows option until the feature is fixed | Kaivax |
| Early Oct | Build 70245 fixed Secondary Lighting using raid settings; Oct 8 build expected to fix Mac shadows | Rommax, via WoW Forever Wiki |
| Oct 15 | Fixed extra bright fog at lower shadow settings; Bloom Intensity became a slider in Advanced | Kaivax |
Our read: Blizzard tuned lighting and fog in almost every beta build, and Ray Traced Shadows had not returned when the beta closed on October 21. Recheck your settings after the launch patch and each hotfix, because the beta's Secondary Lighting bug showed that a menu can show one value while the game uses another.
Advice for alts and returning players
- Coming from Classic Era? A card that ran Classic Era, like a GTX 760 to 780, can't run Forever (Blizzard). Check before launch day.
- Using old addons? Addons are supported and follow modern WoW's interface rules (WoW Handbook). Forever also has a built-in damage meter, so you need fewer addons.
- On a laptop? Cap FPS at 60, set Secondary Lighting to Fair and Compute Effects to Medium. Those two cut GPU load, and with it heat, the most (community test).
- Using a controller? Forever supports gamepads officially (WoW Handbook). Switching to or from Gamepad UI mode resets your edit-mode layout (Kaivax, Oct 1).
Our launch guide has the release time in every zone, and the leveling guide covers what to do once you're in. If you still need to pick a character, start with the class tier list. The WoW Forever hub collects the rest of our coverage.

FAQ
What are the best graphics settings for WoW Forever? Start from Enhanced at native resolution with an FPS cap. Then set Secondary Lighting to Fair, Compute Effects to Medium, Shadow Quality to Low or Medium, and anti-aliasing to CMAA 2. Raise them if you have headroom.
Which WoW Forever settings affect FPS the most? Shadow Quality costs the most FPS, even at low values. Secondary Lighting and Compute Effects cost less FPS but raise GPU load the most, which matters for heat, laptops and crashes (player testing on the Blizzard Forums).
What are the WoW Forever minimum system requirements? On Windows: Windows 10 64-bit, a 4-core 3.0 GHz Haswell or Zen CPU, 8 GB RAM, a DirectX 12 GPU with 4 GB (GTX 10 series, RDNA 1 or Iris Xe2-LPG) and an SSD with 128 GB free. Hard drives aren't supported.
Will my graphics card run WoW Forever? Only if it's AMD GCN 1, NVIDIA Maxwell, Intel Skylake or newer. A GTX 750 Ti starts the game, but a GTX 760, 770 or 780 doesn't (Blizzard).
How do I remove the fog in WoW Forever?
Set Compute Effects to Disabled to thin it. Players report /console volumeFog 0 removes it and the sun rays too (Forever Codex). Blizzard has already removed one fog-disabling setting, so the command may not last.
Does WoW Forever have ray tracing? Not at the moment. Blizzard removed Ray Traced Shadows on October 1 and plans to add it back after fixing it (Kaivax).
