WoW Forever Dual Spec Guide: Level 40, Respec Cost, Legacy
WoW Forever dual spec guide: the level 40 unlock, respec cost at launch vs the beta, how weekly decay works, Legacy resets and two-spec plans by class.

In this guide 13 sections
WoW: Forever keeps Classic's talent trees, so changing your build still means visiting a class trainer, and Blizzard says launch respecs won't be cheap. It also adds Dual Specialization, which Classic Era never had. This WoW Forever dual spec guide covers what Blizzard has confirmed about both, how respecs worked for class and Legacy talents in the beta, what changes at launch, what the Classic cost ladder looked like, and how to plan two specs for each class before Forever launches on November 4, 2026.
Quick summary
- Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40 and costs gold. Blizzard has no plans for more than two specs (Blizzard class deep dive; TechRadar interview, October 10).
- The level might drop. Josh Greenfield said 40 is the "current" level and floated "maybe a cheeky thirty" on the October 8 WoW: Forever Podcast (Wowhead). Nothing has changed in a build.
- The 1 silver respec was beta-only. Blizzard says that at launch the price "will climb quickly and only decrease once per week" (Kaivax, September 24; TechRadar).
- Legacy talents reset at the same trainer, and had the same 1 silver floor in the beta from October 8 (Kaivax).
- Neither the dual spec price nor the launch respec ladder has been published as of October 28. Plan on gold, not silver.
Dual spec in WoW Forever: what Blizzard has confirmed
| Topic | Confirmed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Where to change talents | A class trainer in one of the major cities | Blizzard deep dives |
| Legacy talents | Changed at the same trainer | Blizzard deep dives |
| Dual Specialization | Becomes available at level 40 | Blizzard deep dives |
| Dual spec price | "Learned at level 40 for a cost," no number given | TechRadar |
| More than two specs | "No plans to go past that" | TechRadar |
| Launch respec price | "Will climb quickly and only decrease once per week" | TechRadar |
| Beta class respec | 1 silver if not recently changed; much higher after a reset, back to 1 silver after an hour | Kaivax, September 24 |
| Beta Legacy respec | 1 silver minimum; cost drops by one respec per hour | Kaivax, October 8 |
| Future Legacy flexibility | "The possibility... of some increased re-spec utility" | TechRadar |
Blizzard's reason, from TechRadar: "We do not want to have cheap respecs... We want players' talent decisions to be meaningful."
What isn't announced yet about dual spec
| Question | Status |
|---|---|
| Gold cost to learn dual spec | Not announced |
| Whether swapping specs costs anything or has a cooldown | Not announced |
| Where you can swap (trainer only or anywhere) | Not announced |
| Whether Legacy talents are saved per spec | Not announced |
| Launch respec starting price, steps and cap | Not announced; only "climb quickly" and weekly decay |
| Final unlock level | 40 for now; 30 under discussion (Wowhead) |
How talents and respecs work in Forever
Talents start at level 10 and use the familiar three trees. One-point milestone talents sit at 11, 21 and 31 points, plus a new 16-point milestone. Some key buffs that used to be talents, like Blessing of Kings and Improved Mark of the Wild, are now baseline (Blizzard deep dives). You end at 51 points, as in Classic.
The 16-point milestone matters for planning. It adds a fourth milestone talent to each tree, so a hybrid split leaves more behind than it did in 1.12. Our class guides list every milestone: Warrior, Druid, Paladin, Shaman, Priest and Hunter.
How to respec: visit your class trainer in a major city and choose to unlearn your talents. The same trainer resets Legacy talents (Blizzard). Talents can also change between builds: Blizzard told TechRadar that class changes "will be batched up to all happen at the same time, rather than trickle in," so a big tuning patch is the moment a respec is most likely to be worth it.
The Legacy system adds a second set of talents: up to 16 account points per character across three trees. Its Talented perk starts your talent points earlier, as early as level 5 at max rank, with the cap still 51 (WoW Handbook beta data, in our Legacy guide). Legacy perks are separate from class talents, so a class respec doesn't touch them.
Compare with Classic Era respecs
| Rule | Classic Era | Source |
|---|---|---|
| First respec | 1 gold | ZAM; Blizzard forums |
| Later respecs | 5 gold steps up to 50 gold | ZAM |
| Decay | 5 gold a month (since patch 1.11) | Blizzard forums, quoting the 1.11 notes |
| Decay floor | 10 gold in the notes; 15 gold reported in play | Blizzard forums |
| Dual spec | None; added in Wrath patch 3.1.0 for 1,000 gold at level 40 | Warcraft Wiki |
| Later dual spec | Cataclysm cut it to level 30 and 100 gold | Warcraft Wiki |
Forever keeps the escalating idea but speeds up the decay: weekly instead of monthly (TechRadar). The level 40 unlock matches Wrath. The level 30 idea matches Cataclysm.
WoW Forever respec cost: scenarios at launch
Blizzard hasn't published launch prices. These scenarios assume Forever uses the Classic Era steps (1, 5, 10, 15... up to 50 gold) and drops one step a week. They're our math, not announced numbers.
| Scenario | Classic monthly decay | Forever weekly decay (assumed steps) |
|---|---|---|
| One respec at 60, then none for a month | 1 gold | 1 gold |
| Raider swapping tank to DPS and back every week for 4 weeks (8 respecs) | 1+5+10+15+20+25+30+35 = 141 gold | 1+5, 5+10, 10+15, 15+20 = 81 gold |
| Two respecs in one evening, then two more a week later | 1+5 then 10+15 = 31 gold | 1+5 then 5+10 = 21 gold |
| Same raider with dual spec | Not available in Classic Era | One unpriced purchase, then swaps (swap cost not announced) |
How the weekly model works: each respec moves you one step up the ladder, and each week without one moves you one step down. Swapping out and back once a week therefore climbs one net step a week instead of two.
Our read: weekly decay rewards one or two changes a week and punishes daily swapping. Even under our model, the weekly raider pays 30 and 35 gold in week seven and reaches the 50 gold cap in week ten. That makes dual spec the real answer for hybrids, which matches Blizzard's framing that dual spec covers role swaps.
Respec or dual spec: which to use
| Method | Best for | Cost | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stay in one spec | Pure DPS classes leveling solo | Free | Weaker in dungeons if you're a hybrid in the wrong tree |
| Single respec at a trainer | Fixing a mistake or changing at 60 | Escalates, decays weekly (TechRadar) | Trip to a major city; price climbs with each reset |
| Dual spec at 40 | Hybrids who quest and tank or heal | Gold, unpriced (TechRadar) | Wasn't testable in the beta (cap 30); cost may compete with your mount |
| Legacy respec | Moving 16 Legacy points | 1 silver floor in beta (Kaivax) | Launch price unknown; perks may become more flexible later |
Best dual spec setups by class
| Class | Spec 1 (questing) | Spec 2 (groups) | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Arms or Fury | Protection | Greenfield raised dual spec while discussing whether tanks need a dedicated build (Wowhead) |
| Paladin | Retribution | Holy or Protection | Paladins have three group roles |
| Druid | Feral (cat) | Restoration or Feral (bear) | Feral covers both questing and tanking |
| Shaman | Enhancement | Restoration | Restoration is the usual group role |
| Priest | Shadow | Holy or Discipline | Penance is a 21-point Discipline milestone (Blizzard deep dive) |
| Hunter, Mage, Rogue, Warlock | Leveling build | Raid or PvP build | No role change; a second spec mostly saves respec gold |
Pure DPS classes can still use dual spec for PvP vs PvE or AoE vs single-target builds. Our class tier list shows which classes have it easiest solo, and our new dungeons guide shows which instances sit in the 30–40 range where the second spec matters.
Example: a Paladin levels as Retribution and reaches 40 in the Riverglades. Their guild needs a tank for Krol'dok Stronghold twice a week. Without dual spec, that's two respecs a week, which climbs the cost ladder every week. With dual spec, the Paladin pays once, keeps Retribution for questing and Protection for the dungeon, and only respecs to fix a mistake.
What changes for respecs at launch
The beta closed on October 21. Its cheap respecs ended with it:
- The 1 silver price is gone. Blizzard called it "temporarily cheap in the beta" (TechRadar), so your first respec at launch costs gold.
- Plan both builds before you level. A launch character starts at level 1 with no beta respec discount, so settle both builds in a talent calculator before November 4.
- Legacy resets follow the same idea. Their 1 silver floor was announced for the beta (Kaivax, October 8), and Blizzard has hinted at "some increased re-spec utility" for Legacy later (TechRadar).
- Budget gold around level 40. Riding training (reported at 100 gold) and dual spec unlock at the same level. Our mounts and riding guide has the riding costs to plan against.
Our leveling guide covers which spec to level in for each class.
Handle alts and returning players
- Returning Classic players: don't assume 1.12's monthly decay. Forever's decays weekly, and the step sizes are unknown (TechRadar).
- Alts: each character pays its own respecs. A level-25 alt also earns Legacy Points for the account (our Legacy guide).
- Hybrids on a first character: budget gold for both a mount and dual spec around 40. The two costs compete.
- Hardcore players: a wrong respec costs gold like anywhere else, and a death costs the character, so settle your build before risky content. Our Hardcore guide covers the ruleset.
Class, Legacy and launch coverage for Forever all branches off the WoW Forever hub.
