WoW Forever Legacy System Guide: Points, Perks, Best Builds
WoW Forever Legacy system guide: how to earn all 65 points, every perk and rank, tree gates, respecs, the Spectral Bear track and 16-point builds by role.

In this guide 15 sections
The Legacy system is World of Warcraft: Forever's account progression. Challenges you complete on any character earn Legacy Points, and every character on the account spends up to 16 of them on perks that speed up leveling, crafting, raiding or PvP. This WoW Forever Legacy system guide covers how to unlock it, all 65 challenges, every perk with its ranks and gates, how respecs work, the cosmetic reward track and four 16-point builds. Blizzard's Legacy system article is the official source; per-rank values come from the beta client. Forever launches on November 4, 2026.
Quick summary
- Legacy opens when you earn your first Legacy Point. For most players that happens when their first character hits level 25. Two other milestones also unlock it: 150 skill in a non-gathering primary profession, or exploring the whole world map. Open the panel with Y or the shield icon (Blizzard).
- The account has 65 challenges, and each is worth 1 point. Points are shared by every non-Hardcore character. Each character can spend 16 of them, and how one character spends them doesn't affect the others.
- The 16 points go into 3 trees with 21 perks and 69 ranks. Each rank costs 1 point, so you can't finish even one tree, since a full tree is 23 ranks. That figure comes from the beta client data on WoW Handbook and The Forever Era, plus our own count.
- You don't need alts. Blizzard says one character can earn up to 29 points. Our math puts that character at 14 points if it skips PvP and raids.
- Points beyond 16 feed the cosmetic Legacy Rewards track. Its four rewards end with the Reins of the Spectral Bear mount. The beta client lists the thresholds as 15, 25, 40 and 55 points (WoW Handbook), and they may change.
How the WoW Forever Legacy system works
| Rule | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Unlock | Earn your first Legacy Point: level 25 on any class, 150 in a non-gathering primary profession, or the full world map | Blizzard |
| Open the panel | Shield icon on the menu bar, or Y | Blizzard |
| Points at launch | 65 challenges, 1 point each | Blizzard |
| Per-character spending cap | 16 points | Blizzard |
| Scope | Account-wide on Battle.net, all non-Hardcore characters, across Normal and PvP rulesets | Blizzard Deep Dive |
| Cost per rank | 1 point | The Forever Era (datamined) |
| Tree gates | Some perks need 5 or 10 points already spent in the same tree | WoW Handbook, The Forever Era |
| Empty slots | Each tree has 2 slots marked "To be added in a future update" | The Forever Era |
| Respec | At a class trainer in a major city, like class talents. The beta floor was 1 silver, dropping by one respec per hour; launch pricing isn't announced | Blizzard class deep dive; Kaivax, October 8 |
Blizzard says it set the cap at 16 so new players don't fall too far behind and so one character can fill it without alts. It also plans to raise the cap and add perks, columns and whole new trees over time (Deep Dive recap).
How to earn Legacy Points: all 65 challenges
| Category | Points | Challenges | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classes | 27 | Reach level 25, 45 and 60 on each of the 9 classes | Blizzard |
| Tradeskills | 18 | Reach 150, 225 and 300 in each of the 6 non-gathering primary professions | Blizzard |
| Player vs. Player | 12 | Honor ranks 3, 7, 10, 13 and 14 (5). Exalted with each Battleground reputation (4). Week 4, 7 and 10 quests of the Field of Honor Season's Journey (3) | Blizzard |
| Adventure | 2 | Explore the whole world map on one character. Finish the Lord Valthalak dungeon set questline | Blizzard |
| Dungeons | 3 | Kill the final boss of every dungeon in the 15–25, 26–45 and 46–60 bands | Blizzard |
| Raids | 3 | Onyxia, all 13 Hyjal Summit bosses, all 8 Barrow Deeps bosses | Blizzard |
Barrow Deeps (10-player) and Hyjal Summit (20-player) are max-level raids that open on December 9 (Blizzard), so none of the 3 raid points can be earned in the first five weeks. Our raids guide covers all three.
The three Spelunker challenges
The beta client names the three dungeon challenges after the new dungeons (The Forever Era, Legacy):
| Challenge | Client description | Our guide |
|---|---|---|
| Novice Spelunker | Ruins of Lordaeron and Excavation: Wetlands. The criterion also lists "Ragefire Chasm or Hall of Thanes" | Ruins of Lordaeron, Excavation Site, Hall of Thanes |
| Experienced Spelunker | City of Dalaran, the Drowned City and Krol'dok Stronghold | City of Dalaran, Drowned City |
| Master Spelunker | Alcaz, Blackmaw Hold and Shaper's Terrace (the client text has placeholder names) | New dungeons guide |
Blizzard's own wording is broader: "the final boss in all" dungeons of each level band. Check the challenge tracker after each clear to see what counts.
How many Legacy Points can one character earn?
Blizzard's figure for a single character is 29 points: 3 from leveling, 6 from two crafting professions, 12 from PvP, 2 from Adventure, and 6 from dungeons and raids. Here's how that total changes with play style. The breakdowns are our arithmetic on Blizzard's list.
| One-character plan | Points | Hits the 16 cap? |
|---|---|---|
| Level to 60 only | 3 | No |
| Level 60 + two crafting professions to 300 | 9 | No |
| Above + all 3 dungeon bands | 12 | No |
| Above + both Adventure points | 14 | No |
| Above + Onyxia, Hyjal and Barrow Deeps | 17 | Yes |
| Everything, including all PvP | 29 | Yes, with 13 extra for the track |
| Level 60 + one gathering and one crafting profession (no PvP or raids) | 11 (3 + 3 + 3 + 2) | No |
A gathering profession earns nothing directly, because only non-gathering professions count (Blizzard). A Wowhead commenter estimated a solo main at around 7 points. That's roughly right for a player who levels, crafts a little and stops there. The fastest top-up is an alt: each level-25 alt of a new class adds 1 point, and the 45 and 60 milestones on that class add 2 more.
Adventure Legacy perks
All values are per rank, taken from the beta client (WoW Handbook, datamined). "Gate" is how many points must already be spent in this tree. "Needs" is the prerequisite perk.
| Perk | Ranks | Rank 1 → max | Gate | Needs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Well Rested | 5 | Rested XP builds 4% faster and its cap rises 4% → 20% and 20% | 0 | — |
| Thrill of Adventure | 5 | 1% → 5% of max Health and Mana over 10 sec on a killing blow to a non-trivial enemy (not in instances) | 0 | — |
| High Alert | 2 | Stealth detection as if your level were +1 → +2 (not in Battlegrounds) | 5 | — |
| Talented | 5 | Talent points start at level 9 → level 5, still capped at 51 | 5 | Well Rested |
| Field Guide | 3 | Cooldown on adding Camp features −8% → −25% | 5 | — |
| Field Medicine | 2 | Recently Bandaged lasts 5 → 10 sec less (not in instances or Battlegrounds) | 5 | — |
| Frequent Flier | 1 | 50% off flight paths, flight mount 20% faster | 10 | Field Guide |
Blizzard puts the camp-feature cooldown at one hour. At max Field Guide that works out to about 45 minutes (our math). Our camping guide covers what those camp features do.
Resourcefulness Legacy perks
| Perk | Ranks | Rank 1 → max | Gate | Needs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gourmand | 3 | Food buff duration +33% → +100% | 0 | — |
| The Quick and the Dead | 2 | Ghost run speed +5% → +10%. Helpful spells cost nothing for 1 → 2 min after a resurrection (ends when you enter combat) | 0 | — |
| Reinforce | 5 | Death durability loss −8% → −40% | 0 | — |
| For Great Honor | 5 | Honor +2% → +10% | 5 | — |
| Permanence | 2 | Long party and raid buffs from your class, and camp rest benefits, last 50% → 100% longer | 5 | Gourmand |
| Diplomat | 5 | Reputation +2% → +10% | 5 | — |
| Reagent Economy | 1 | Class abilities don't need vendor reagents, and tier 1 camping features need no materials to craft (Blizzard) | 10 | The Quick and the Dead |
Professions Legacy perks
| Perk | Ranks | Rank 1 → max | Gate | Needs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Working Overtime | 5 | Skill-up chance +4% → +20% for primary, secondary and class tradeskills such as Lockpicking | 0 | — |
| Bountiful Harvest | 5 | Scarce materials from Mining, Herbalism and Skinning +20% → +100% | 0 | — |
| Bartering | 2 | Vendor prices −5% → −10% | 5 | — |
| Master Chef | 5 | 10% → 50% chance of an extra cooking result | 5 | — |
| Luremaster | 2 | 25% → 50% chance of an extra fish while a Lure is active | 5 | — |
| Performance Bonus | 3 | 5% → 15% chance of double Merchant's Favor on a crate turn-in | 5 | Bountiful Harvest |
| Dedicated Study | 1 | Daily +1 to your lowest tradeskill. Once all five tradeskills are at 300, it grants 2 random Elemental Essences instead | 10 | Bartering |
Merchant's Favor comes from the new Azeroth Commerce Authority (Alliance) and Durotar Supply and Logistics (Horde) factions, which Blizzard calls "a major source of new tradeskill activities." Our Merchant's Favor guide explains crates and writs, and the professions guide covers which pairs earn the tradeskill points.
Best Legacy perks: 16-point builds
Each of these builds follows both readings of the prerequisite rule, so every "Needs" perk is at max rank. They're our builds, not Blizzard's.
| Build | Tree split | Perks (ranks) | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leveler (first character or alt, 1–60) | Adventure 11, Resourcefulness 5 | Well Rested 5, Thrill of Adventure 2, Field Guide 3, Frequent Flier 1; The Quick and the Dead 2, Reinforce 3 | More rested XP, half-price flights, cheaper deaths |
| Raider main (level 60) | Resourcefulness 16 | Gourmand 3, The Quick and the Dead 2, Permanence 2, Reinforce 3, Reagent Economy 1, Diplomat 5 | Twice the food and raid-buff uptime, quicker wipe recovery, no reagent shopping, faster reputation |
| Gatherer/crafter alt | Professions 16 | Bountiful Harvest 5, Working Overtime 5, Bartering 2, Dedicated Study 1, Performance Bonus 3 | Twice the Scarce materials, faster skill-ups, more Merchant's Favor |
| PvP main | Resourcefulness 16 | For Great Honor 5, The Quick and the Dead 2, Reinforce 3, Reagent Economy 1, Gourmand 3, Permanence 2 | 10% more Honor, faster graveyard runs, free rebuffs after a resurrection |
Some notes on the choices:
- Talented mostly helps alts and twinks. You get talent points from level 5 instead of 10, but the 51-point cap doesn't change. A Wowhead commenter put it this way: "Only for twinks." It also needs Well Rested first, at max rank under one reading of the rules.
- Frequent Flier costs 11 points in practice. You have to spend 10 in Adventure, and Field Guide must be in the tree first. It earns its place on a leveler and is expensive on a main.
- Reagent Economy is the same kind of capstone. It needs 10 points in Resourcefulness plus The Quick and the Dead. Blizzard says it is meant to make "buffing easier," which matters most for raid buffers, and it also makes basic camp objects free to craft.
- The Leveler build pairs with rested XP. Well Rested at max rank and a campsite's Camp Tent stack well; our leveling guide shows where to use them.
Example: a player levels a Warrior main and wants a Mage alt. The Warrior reaches 60 with two crafting professions at 300, which is 9 points. The Mage hits 25 a week later, so the account has 10. The alt runs the Leveler build with 10 points (Well Rested 5, Thrill of Adventure 2, Field Guide 3), then adds Frequent Flier as soon as the 11th point arrives. The main keeps its own 10 in the Raider tree, and neither choice affects the other.
Fastest ways to earn Legacy Points
| Method | Points | Effort | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level alts to 25 | 1 per class (8 more classes) | Low | Fast top-up toward 16 |
| Level alts to 45 and 60 | 2 per class | High | Players who enjoy leveling |
| Crafting to 150 / 225 / 300 | 3 per profession (up to 18) | Medium; materials and gold | Crafters with alts |
| Dungeon bands | 3 | Medium; requires every final boss in a band | Dungeon groups |
| PvP ranks, reputations, Season's Journey | 12 | High; Honor rank 14 is the top rank | Committed PvPers |
| Raids | 3 | High; requires a raid group, and two raids open later | Raiders |
| Adventure | 2 | Medium; full map plus the Valthalak questline | Explorers |
Legacy Rewards track and the Spectral Bear mount
| Account points | Reward | Type | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 | Replica Ironforge Air Rifle | Toy (stuns other players and keeps score) | Blizzard, threshold from WoW Handbook |
| 25 | Spectral Bear Cub | Pet | Same |
| 40 | Spectral Bear Tabard | Tabard | Same |
| 55 | Reins of the Spectral Bear | Mount | Same |
The track counts every point your account earns, not just the 16 you spend. With 65 points available, 49 can only go to the track (The Forever Era). Blizzard says the rewards are cosmetic with "no competitive gameplay advantage," and that new rewards will arrive with each content update. A Wowhead commenter worked out that the mount means leveling about five characters to 60 on top of other content. By our count, one character's 29 points leaves 26 to find elsewhere, and each new class leveled to 60 adds 3.
Avoid these Legacy mistakes
- Saving points for perks that don't exist yet. The empty slots have no data. Spend now, because points keep accruing for the track either way.
- Taking Talented on a level 60. It does nothing once your talents are filled.
- Leaving out gathering. Gathering professions earn no points, so pair one gatherer with a crafting profession on each alt to keep tradeskill points coming.
- Expecting Hardcore to share points. Points earned on other rulesets don't carry into Hardcore; see our Hardcore guide.
- Respeccing on a whim. Legacy resets happen at the class trainer and won't stay at the beta's 1 silver. Our dual spec and respec guide covers how the launch cost works.
If you're making alts or coming back
- Alts on the same account start with your points. Each alt spends its own 16 independently, so a gathering alt and a raiding main can both run full 16-point builds (Blizzard). Leveling a class you haven't played adds class challenges, and our class tier list shows which ones level fastest.
- Rulesets share points. Normal and PvP characters draw from the same pool (Deep Dive).
- Hardcore is one-way. Hardcore isn't in the launch build. Once it arrives, points earned on other rulesets won't appear there, while challenges completed in Hardcore count everywhere. PvP challenges can't be done in Hardcore, so it gets 12 challenges of its own.
- Returning Classic players can start with our launch guide for rulesets and dates. Classes, zones and dungeons are all linked from the WoW Forever hub.

FAQ
When do you unlock the Legacy system in WoW Forever? When you earn your first Legacy Point. For most players that's reaching level 25 on any class. Getting a non-gathering primary profession to 150 or exploring the full world map also unlocks it (Blizzard).
Are Legacy Points account-wide? Yes. Points are shared across your Battle.net account and across the Normal and PvP rulesets. Each character spends its 16 separately. Hardcore is the exception: points don't flow in, but challenges earned there count everywhere.
How many Legacy Points can one character spend? Sixteen at launch. The account can earn 65, and Blizzard plans to raise the cap and add perks and trees with later updates (Blizzard, Deep Dive recap).
Can you respec Legacy perks? Yes, at your class trainer in a major city, the same place you reset class talents (Blizzard). The beta charged 1 silver at minimum; the launch price hasn't been announced.
What is the best Legacy perk for leveling? Well Rested at 5 ranks, which gives 20% faster rested XP and a 20% higher cap per the beta client. Next is Frequent Flier, which needs 10 points in Adventure (beta client data; our ranking).
How do you get the Spectral Bear mount? Earn enough account Legacy Points to reach the last reward on the track. The beta client lists that as 55 points. Blizzard hasn't confirmed the number (WoW Handbook).
