WoW Forever Class Tier List: Best Classes by Role at Launch

WoW Forever class tier list: all 9 classes and every spec ranked for leveling, tanking, healing, raid DPS and PvP on stated criteria, after Oct 26.

THE GUIDE

World of Warcraft: Forever launches on November 4, 2026, and every class arrives with reworked talent trees. That means a Classic-era tier list doesn't carry over. This WoW Forever class tier list ranks all nine classes overall, then the specs for each job: leveling and solo play, dungeon tanking, healing, projected raid DPS and PvP. Every row names the change it rests on and where that change is documented, so you can disagree with the ranking and still use the reasoning.

Quick summary

  • Best classes overall: Paladin and Shaman. Each has an S-tier spec in a group role and can cover more than one role. Druid, Priest and Warrior follow closely. The scoring is explained in the next section.
  • Best leveling and solo classes: Beast Mastery Hunter, Affliction Warlock and Frost Mage. Each has a tool that cuts downtime: a pet that scales with your gear, Life Tap that scales with Spirit, and conjured food and water (WoW Handbook).
  • Best tanks: Protection Warrior and Protection Paladin. Seal of Fury lets a Paladin's Judgement taunt, and Warriors can Thunder Clap and Charge in Defensive Stance. Best healers: Restoration Shaman and Holy Priest.
  • Raid DPS is a projection. The beta was capped at level 30 and closed on October 21, and raids open on December 9. Every level 60 ranking, including ours, is provisional until raid logs exist.
  • Racials changed on October 26–27. Orc Command is back (+5% Hunter and Warlock pet damage), Dwarves gain +1% hit, and Human Spirit rose to 10% (Blizzard development notes).

How this WoW Forever tier list ranks classes

Most tier lists for Forever are built from impressions. This one uses three written criteria, and the same scale applies to every class:

  1. Toolkit, not damage numbers. Nobody has played at level 60, so each spec is ranked by the documented changes to its kit: talents, baseline spells and Blizzard's tuning posts. The sources are the WoW Handbook class pages (datamined client, updated October 24) and Kaivax's development notes on the official forums.
  2. One list per job. A spec that levels well can be weak in a raid. Each role gets its own table with its own criterion, written above the table.
  3. A confidence label on every list. Lists covering levels 1–30 rest on beta play. Lists covering level 60 rest on talent text alone.

The overall class table adds up each class's best spec in three lists (leveling, tank or healer, raid DPS: S = 3, A = 2, B = 1, C or no spec = 0). Each role beyond damage adds 1 point, because a class that can switch roles finds groups faster (WoW Handbook role chart).

WoW Forever class tier list: all nine classes ranked

Tier Class Score Best leveling spec Best group role Best raid DPS spec Roles
S Paladin 8 A (Retribution) S (Protection) B (Retribution) Tank, healer, damage
S Shaman 8 A (Enhancement) S (Restoration) A (Elemental) Healer, damage
A Druid 7 A (Feral) A (Bear, Restoration) B (Balance, Cat) Tank, healer, damage
A Priest 7 B (Discipline/Holy) S (Holy) A (Shadow) Healer, damage
A Warrior 7 B (Arms/Fury) S (Protection) A (Fury) Tank, damage
B Mage 5 S (Frost) None A (Arcane, Fire) Damage
B Warlock 5 S (Affliction) None A (Affliction, Destruction) Damage
B Hunter 4 S (Beast Mastery) None B (all three) Damage
C Rogue 2 B (Combat) None B (Assassination, Combat) Damage

Tiers: S = 8 or more, A = 6–7, B = 4–5, C = 3 or less. This is a flexibility ranking. Mage, Warlock and Hunter score lower because they fill one role, not because they are weak: all three top the leveling list. Rogue's best case is PvP, which the score doesn't count.

Best WoW Forever class by role

Your role matters more than any tier. WoW Handbook's role chart lists who can fill each one:

Role Classes that can fill it Fastest group invites?
Tank Warrior, Paladin, Druid Yes
Healer Paladin, Priest, Shaman, Druid Yes
Damage All nine classes No, it's the most crowded role

Forever also opens 12 race and class pairs that Classic didn't allow: Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Gnome Priest, Orc Mage, Undead Paladin, Troll Warlock, and Skyborne Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Shaman, Mage and Druid (WoW Handbook, best class). Paladins and Shamans are no longer locked to one faction, which changes how raids are put together. Racials are covered in our race and class combos guide and the Skyborne guide.

WoW Forever class changes: how much each class was reworked

A bigger rework means less of your Classic knowledge transfers. These counts come from each WoW Handbook class page (datamined):

Class New talents Changed from Classic Biggest baseline change
Warrior 12 of 52 31 Victory Rush at 20, healing 10% of max health per kill
Paladin 19 of 50 23 Holy Strike at 6; Judgement no longer consumes your Seal
Hunter 18 of 50 21 Aimed Shot trained by every Hunter at 20; traps in combat
Rogue 10 of 53 30 Sap no longer breaks Stealth; one-handed axes
Priest 15 of 52 28 Fear Ward and Devouring Plague trained by every race
Shaman 17 of 50 23 5-minute buff totems; Call of the Elements drops four at once
Mage 11 of 55 30 Frostfire Bolt at 40; Teleport: Dalaran at 50
Warlock 21 of 52 23 Banes get their own slot beside Curses
Druid 18 of 52 29 Potions, enchants and racials all work in form

Warlock (21) and Paladin (19) have the most new talents, 141 across all nine classes. Rogue (10) and Mage (11) have the fewest, but Mage's new talents include the reworked Arcane core: Arcane Blast and Missile Barrage. Each class has its own deep dive: Warrior, Paladin, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Shaman, Mage, Warlock and Druid.

Best leveling class and best solo class in WoW Forever

Criterion: downtime between pulls, how well you survive a bad pull, and how much you depend on gear from 1 to 60. Confidence: medium. The beta tested levels 1–30 only.

Tier Spec The change it rests on (source)
S Beast Mastery Hunter Pets scale with your gear, and WoW Handbook calls the BM opening "the strongest general-purpose opening"
S Affliction Warlock Instant Corruption, Life Tap scales with Spirit, demons scale with your stats (WoW Handbook)
S Frost Mage Conjured food and water, Frostbite freezes, Ice Lance at 20 (WoW Handbook)
A Retribution Paladin Holy Strike at level 6; Blizzard raised its damage at every rank (Kaivax: 25% up to 50% weapon damage)
A Feral Druid Cat with Bear as a fallback; Revive at 12; potions in form (WoW Handbook)
A Enhancement Shaman Weapon imbues last 60 minutes; Maelstrom Weapon turns melee hits into cheaper Lightning Bolts (WoW Handbook)
B Discipline/Holy Priest Wand, Twin Disciplines and Improved Power Word: Shield; Shadow Word: Death at 32
B Combat Rogue Flawless Execution makes Eviscerate 10 Energy cheaper, but there's no self-heal
B Arms/Fury Warrior Victory Rush helps, and Rage from taking damage was rebalanced for questing armor (Kaivax)

Two notes affect Mage. Improved Blizzard now tops out at a 40% slow, down from 65%, and Cone of Cold's slow is shorter. Both make the big Classic AoE kiting pulls harder (WoW Handbook). Mage stays in S for food, water and control, but plan for smaller pulls than in Classic.

Warriors got the most help with leveling. Kaivax wrote that Blizzard had been "balancing Rage gained around Warriors having 50% Armor" and has now "rebalanced Rage gains based on appropriate values per level in the 20% to 40% range." Basic-attack crits also give twice the Rage. That is why Warrior is B and not last. Routes, rested XP and dungeon timing for every class are in our WoW Forever leveling guide.

For Hardcore, the order shifts a little: Hunter (Disengage now sheds twice the threat), Warlock and Paladin move up, and Frost Mage moves down because of the reduced slow.

Best class for beginners in WoW Forever

WoW Handbook's advice for mostly solo questing is a class with a pet or strong self-healing, because it "levels more smoothly." Applied to the lists above, three picks stand out for a first character:

  • Hunter: the pet tanks while you learn, and Aimed Shot is trained by every Hunter at 20, so no spec choice can leave you without it.
  • Warlock: the Voidwalker tanks, Life Tap and Drain Life cover most downtime, and demons scale with your stats.
  • Paladin: plate armor, self-heals and Holy Strike from level 6. It can also become a tank or healer later without a new character.

Mage is strong but less forgiving now that the AoE slow is weaker. Rogue and Warrior reward experience the most, because neither can heal itself outside Victory Rush and bandages.

Best tank in WoW Forever

Criterion: threat tools, a reliable taunt, and emergency defensives in 5-player dungeons. Confidence: medium-high up to level 30, lower beyond that.

Tier Spec Why (source) Gap to plan around
S Protection Warrior Thunder Clap works in Defensive Stance; Vanguard lets you Charge in it; blocks, dodges and parries give Rage; Rage from damage ignores armor and absorbs (WoW Handbook) Still depends on weapon and shield upgrades
S Protection Paladin Seal of Fury makes Judgement taunt for 4 seconds; Swift Judgement resets a missed taunt; Templar's Bulwark adds an absorb equal to 100% of max health; Consecration hits the first four enemies hardest (WoW Handbook) "No interrupt, no slow" (WoW Handbook)
A Feral (Bear) Druid Primal Bite threat "roughly doubled"; Bear threat bonus raised to 50% from 30% (Kaivax); Lacerate trained at 42; Berserk works in either form Fewest tank cooldowns of the three

A Paladin that taunts through Judgement is the biggest change to dungeon groups in Forever. Before Forever, a Paladin tank had to manage threat with no taunt at all. Blizzard moved Righteous Fury's Holy threat bonus twice: from 90% down to 60% in the September 24 build, then back to 90% in the October 15 build (Kaivax), which is the value the client shows now. Both tank picks are tested in practice in the Hall of Thanes, the first new dungeon most Alliance players see.

Best healer in WoW Forever

Criterion: throughput tools, Mana sustain and group utility. Healers have the easiest time finding groups and the hardest time leveling alone. Confidence: medium.

Tier Spec Why (source)
S Restoration Shaman Water Shield in row 3, Mana Tide Totem at 16 points, Riptide at 31 makes Chain Heal 25% stronger on that target; Resistance totems cover the whole raid (WoW Handbook)
S Holy Priest Binding Heal at 16 points with no cooldown, Prayer of Mending at 31; Prayer of Healing heals the targeted party, pets included (WoW Handbook)
A Discipline Priest Soul Warding cuts the Power Word: Shield cooldown and cost; Penance at 21 (WoW Handbook)
A Restoration Druid Swiftmend no longer consumes your HoT; Wild Growth at 31 heals a party; Wild Growth and Rejuvenation can now crit (Kaivax)
B Holy Paladin Infusion of Light and Light's Vigil add group healing, but player feedback on the official forums about the tree has been negative

Blizzard removed Improved Holy Strike from the Holy tree and made its effect baseline. Kaivax explained that a talent reducing "the cooldown of a core ability so early on in a healing talent tree made this feel like a talent that was required." The Holy Paladin tree is the one most likely to be tuned again, so it's the healer most likely to move up.

Best DPS in WoW Forever: raid projection

Criterion: how complete each spec's raid toolkit is: a resource that lasts a long fight, a core rotation and a damage cooldown. This isn't measured damage. Raids open on December 9 (see our raids guide), and nobody has played at 60. Confidence: low.

Tier Specs The raid-relevant change (WoW Handbook unless noted)
A Arcane Mage, Fire Mage Arcane Blast stacks up to four times, and Missile Barrage has a 40% chance to make Arcane Missiles free; Heating Up gives faster Pyroblasts; Ignite is now tracked per Mage
A Affliction Warlock, Destruction Warlock Wrack (+10% from your other Shadow DoTs); Pandemic doubles DoT crit bonus; Bane of Havoc; Incinerate at 31
A Fury Warrior Whirlwind strikes with both weapons baseline; Raging Blows cuts Cleave and Whirlwind cost
A Shadow Priest Shadowform halves the Mana cost of non-healing spells; Shadow Weaving boosts only your own damage
A Elemental Shaman Lightning Overload fires free half-damage copies; Lava Burst moved to 21 points and Elemental Mastery returned at 31 in the October 15 build (Kaivax)
B Beast Mastery, Marksmanship and Survival Hunter Trueshot Aura is now raid-wide (Kaivax); Lone Wolf +20% damage without a pet; Sniper Shot from 45 yards
B Assassination and Combat Rogue Mutilate at 21 hits poisoned targets 20% harder; Venom at 31 adds 30% poison damage
B Balance and Feral (Cat) Druid Eclipse speeds Starfire; Moonkin Aura and Leader of the Pack are raid-wide (Kaivax)
B Enhancement Shaman, Retribution Paladin Rage of the Farseer +30% attack speed; Twist of Light makes Seal twisting baseline
C Demonology Warlock, Arms Warrior, Frost Mage, Subtlety Rogue Mostly leveling and PvP strength

One pattern runs through the list. Raid debuffs that used to be shared now help only the player who applies them: Ignite, Improved Scorch, Winter's Chill and Shadow Weaving (WoW Handbook). Classic raids stacked Mages and Shadow Priests because those shared debuffs boosted everyone. In Forever that doesn't work, so raid composition should be more varied.

How the October 26 racial pass changes class picks

Blizzard posted a final racial pass on October 26 and corrected it on October 27, after the beta had closed (Kaivax, development notes). Kaivax wrote that Blizzard "prioritized racial identity," so some races will be slightly stronger for some classes. The changes that move class choices:

Race Change (Blizzard) Who it matters to
Orc Savage (+1% crit) removed; Command re-added, +5% Hunter and Warlock pet damage; Blood Fury cooldown 2 minutes (was 3) Beast Mastery Hunter and Demonology Warlock gain the most
Human Ruthless now +1% crit (was 2%); Human Spirit now +10% Spirit (was 5%) Healers and Warlocks (Life Tap scales with Spirit)
Dwarf Earth Fury removed; Artisan's Precision added, +1% hit with spells and attacks Every damage dealer before hit gear arrives
Troll Berserking lasts 15 seconds (was 10) Every burst-damage spec
Tauren Endurance is now only +5% Health; Plainsrunning gives 2% speed per stack up to 60%, no longer on mounts Tanks lose the old extra modifiers
Undead Touch of the Grave internal cooldown 15 seconds (was 25) Shadow damage dealers
Skyborne Wind-Blessed Haste bonus 2% (was 3%); Read Leyline and Skysight now last 15 seconds and grant Attuned or Charged for 1 hour at a ley line or convergence Casters and healers

None of these change a tier above. They change which race fits a spec, so check race tooltips when you create your character on November 4.

Best PvP classes in WoW Forever

Criterion: tools that win fights against players: stealth openers, burst, control and range. PvP gets a short list because the PvP guide covers the systems. Blizzard first removed Elemental Mastery "so Elemental damage can rise in dungeons and raids without overpowering PvP" (WoW Handbook, Shaman page), then brought it back as the 31-point talent in the October 15 build (Kaivax). That tells you Blizzard is still weighing PvP burst against PvE damage. The specs to watch:

Spec PvP tool (source)
Subtlety Rogue Sap no longer breaks Stealth; Cutthroat unlocks Ambush mid-fight (WoW Handbook)
Shadow Priest Shadow Word: Death at 32; baseline Devouring Plague (WoW Handbook)
Frost Mage Frost Blast at 24 slows by 40% (WoW Handbook); Ice Lance hits frozen targets much harder
Arms Warrior Spearing Strike at 16 dismounts a target (WoW Handbook)
Marksmanship Hunter Sniper Shot from 45 yards (Kaivax)

WoW Forever class changes for alts and returning players

If you played Classic, these are the habits to drop. Every row is sourced to the WoW Handbook class pages unless noted.

Old habit Forever reality
Spending talent points on raid buffs Several group buffs are baseline (Mage, Shaman, Priest), freeing points
Seal twisting with an addon Twist of Light makes it a talent
Druid powershifting with Tiger's Fury Gone; use Shifting Power (Kaivax)
Shaman totem twisting with 2-minute buffs Buff totems last 5 minutes, and Totemic Projection moves them
Hunter Auto Shot while moving Auto Shot needs you to stand still for 0.5 seconds (Kaivax)
Paladins Alliance-only, Shamans Horde-only Undead Paladins and Dwarf Shamans cross over

Respec costs: Kaivax called the 1 silver beta respec "temporary for the Beta only," with later resets costing "much higher" amounts that decay back over time. Plan your builds in the WoW Handbook calculator rather than counting on cheap resets, and read our dual spec and respec guide before you commit. Legacy points carry some account progress across characters, and profession picks by class are in our professions guide.

Re-check this tier list after launch

Three things will move these rankings, in this order:

  1. Launch tooltips on November 4. Talent ranks and racial values can change in the launch build. Compare your tooltips with the tables above; our launch guide has the release time in your zone.
  2. The first hotfix notes. Blizzard tuned classes in every beta build, so expect launch-week changes. Holy Paladin and Elemental Shaman have moved the most.
  3. Raid logs after December 9. These are the first real damage data. The raid DPS table is the one most likely to change.

Every class, dungeon and system we've covered for Forever is linked from the WoW Forever hub.

FAQ

What is the best class in WoW Forever? On our scoring, Paladin and Shaman. Both have an S-tier group spec and can fill more than one role. For pure leveling speed, Beast Mastery Hunter, Affliction Warlock and Frost Mage lead.

What is the best leveling class in WoW Forever? Hunter, Warlock and Mage. Hunter pets scale with your gear, Warlock's Life Tap scales with Spirit, and Mages conjure food and water. Mage's AoE kiting got weaker because Improved Blizzard's slow dropped to 40%.

What is the best tank in WoW Forever? Protection Warrior and Protection Paladin tie. Seal of Fury, learned at level 10, makes a Paladin's Judgement taunt, and Swift Judgement resets a missed taunt. Paladins still have no interrupt and no slow, and Bear Druids are a close third.

What is the best healer in WoW Forever? Restoration Shaman and Holy Priest. Shamans get Riptide, Water Shield and Mana Tide Totem; Priests get Binding Heal and Prayer of Mending. Holy Paladin ranks lowest for now.

What is the easiest class for beginners in WoW Forever? Hunter, Warlock or Paladin. A pet or strong self-healing makes solo questing smoother, and Paladin can switch to tank or healer later.

Is this WoW Forever tier list final? No. The beta stopped at level 30, so level 60 and raid rankings are projections from talent text. Expect the raid DPS list to change once raids open on December 9.
