MapleStory Classic Crossbowman Guide: Iron Arrow Build, Training
MapleStory Classic Crossbowman guide: Iron Arrow vs Mastery first, the 19-SP build, Final Attack explained, crafted crossbows, Hunter compared.

In this guide 13 sections
Quick summary
- Iron Arrow pierces up to 6 monsters in a straight line at 180%. Damage drops ×0.8 for each monster it passes, so six targets total about 3.7× the first hit (planet-helper, mscw-guidebook). There's no stun.
- The guides disagree on what to max first. Planet-helper says Iron Arrow, maxed by Lv 44. Mscw-guidebook says Crossbow Mastery, worth about +53% average damage, and leaves Iron Arrow for later.
- Mscw-guidebook's recommended build stops Booster at 10 and Soul Arrow at 11. That saves the 19 SP you'd be short, so you can max Mastery, Final Attack, Iron Arrow, and Judgement.
- Crossbows need 10 less STR than their level. Mscw-guidebook found that leaves a Crossbowman with 8 more DEX than a Hunter at Lv 50.
- Train on flat, long maps. Iron Arrow flies straight, and bumps in the ground can block it (mscw-guidebook).
Checked against the Founder's Access build on October 13, 2026. Grand Launch is October 21, 2026; see the end of the guide for what may change.
Choose Crossbowman or Hunter
Mscw-guidebook says bows and crossbows "deal about the same damage." The real choice is Iron Arrow (a line) versus Arrow Blow plus Arrow Bomb (a blast).
| Factor | Crossbowman | Hunter | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multi-target skill | Iron Arrow: line, up to 6, no stun | Arrow Bomb: blast, up to 6, 60% stun | planet-helper |
| Level 1 group skill | 120% | 70% | mscw-guidebook |
| Best maps | Long, flat floors | Clustered platforms | both |
| STR need at Lv 50 | 40 (Rower) | 50 (Olympus) | mscw-guidebook |
| Per arrow vs DPS at Lv 50 | Rower +4% per arrow, about −4% DPS | Olympus faster | mscw-guidebook |
| Final Attack | 25% chance, 360% at max | Up to 3 targets | mscw-guidebook |
Example: You like Line 2's long floors and want more DEX. Crossbowman fits. If you'd rather stun groups on stacked platforms, read our Hunter guide. Our job tier list compares every job.
Build first job
Mscw-guidebook says first job works like the Hunter's, with one change: the Crossbowman keeps 1 point in Power Knockback for monsters that get in your face. At max it knocks back 4 for 8 MP, but it only averages 82 damage at Lv 30.
| Skill | Focus build | Eye of Amazon build |
|---|---|---|
| Arrow Blow | 20 | 20 |
| Critical Shot | 15 | 15 |
| Power Knockback | 1 | 1 |
| Focus | 20 | 10 |
| The Eye of Amazon | 5 | 15 |
| Double Shot | 0 | 0 |
Mscw-guidebook's rule is to max Focus if you train above your level. At Lv 30 against Jr. Wraiths, max Focus hits a little over 90% of the time, against about 70% at Focus 10. At Lv 50 on Wraiths, both builds hit 100%. Eye of Amazon 15 gives 470 range against 420.
Advance to Crossbowman at Lv 30
Planet-helper lists the chain. Talk to Athena Pierce in Henesys, then the Bowman Job Instructor on The Road to the Dungeon. Collect 30 Dark Marbles (Bowman) in Ant Tunnel For Bowman, then turn in The Proof of a Hero.
Understand Iron Arrow
Mscw-guidebook gives the math. Max Iron Arrow costs 28 MP and hits the first monster for 180%. Each one after that takes 0.8× the previous hit:
| Target in line | Share of first hit | Effective % at max |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | 100% | 180% |
| 2nd | 80% | 144% |
| 3rd | 64% | about 115% |
| 4th | 51% | about 92% |
| 5th | 41% | about 74% |
| 6th | about 33% | about 59% |
The effective percentages are our arithmetic from mscw-guidebook's ×0.8 rule. Against two monsters, Iron Arrow already beats Arrow Blow, but it costs twice the MP. Use Arrow Blow on one target and Iron Arrow on two or more. At level 1 (120%), Iron Arrow needs three targets to beat a max Arrow Blow (mscw-guidebook).
Compare the three Crossbowman builds
| Skill | planet-helper | mscw recommended | mscw Iron Arrow max |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crossbow Mastery | 20 (by Lv 49) | 20 (around Lv 37) | 20 |
| Iron Arrow | 30 (first, by Lv 44) | 30 (around Lv 47) | 30 |
| Final Attack: Crossbow | 30 | 30 | 30 |
| Amazon's Judgement | 1 | 20 | 1 |
| Crossbow Booster | 20 | 10 | 20 |
| Soul Arrow: Crossbow | 20 | 11 | 20 |
Mscw-guidebook's recommended order is Mastery first, then 1 point each into Booster and Final Attack at Mastery 5. Next comes Iron Arrow to max around Lv 47, then Booster 10 and Soul Arrow 11 (no more arrow buying from about Lv 54), Final Attack max around 64, and Judgement last at 70. The cost is rebuffing about every three minutes, which mscw-guidebook puts at about 500 more MP and 280 more HP an hour.
Planet-helper puts Iron Arrow first because it's the job's "only multi-target attack before 3rd job."
Our read: on Line 2 and The Burnt Land, where monsters line up, Iron Arrow first pays off. Mscw-guidebook found level 1 Iron Arrow saves only about 5% of attacks over 100 Jr. Wraith kills, which favors Mastery first. Either order ends in the same place by Lv 70 for the core skills.
Decide what to do with Final Attack
Final Attack: Crossbow is a 25% chance to add a 270–360% follow-up hit after an attack (NiaMeowDB; the chance was 50% in COT2). Both sources max it. Use it on bosses and single targets; if it slows your Iron Arrow rhythm on groups, skip it there.
Pick your crossbows
| Lv | Crossbow | Attack | Speed | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | Mountain Crossbow | 47 | Slow | Woodcrafting 5 (planet-helper) |
| 30 | Eagle Crow | 52 | Slow | Woodcrafting 6. Karl in Henesys stops at Mountain Crossbow (Lv 25, 16,500 mesos) at launch (NiaMeowDB) |
| 35 | — | — | — | No Lv 35 crossbow |
| 40 | Heckler | 59 | Average | Woodcrafting 8; the wiki lists Stirges as a drop source |
| 45 | Silver Crow | 67 | Slow | Woodcrafting 9 recipe (crafting is capped at Lv 8 at launch); Fairy 3 (planet-helper, mscw) |
| 50 | Rower | 72 | Slow | Woodcrafting 10 recipe (not craftable at launch, cap Lv 8); Sporewood in closed Forgotten Hollow |
| 60 | Golden Crow | 82 | — | Taurospear (Lv 75), drop only |
| 70 | Gross Jaeger | 92 | — | Jr. Balrog (Lv 80), drop only |
Arrows: mscw-guidebook says even the best crossbow arrows add only 4% with a Rower. Its advice is one-meso arrows plus Soul Arrow.
Train from 30 to 70
Planet-helper ranks maps by how many monsters stand in one line:
| Level | Map | Main monster | 100% hit rate from (Focus 10) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30–35 | Land of Wild Boar / The Burnt Land II–III | Wild Boar, Fire Boar | Fire Boars at Lv 30 |
| 35–40 | The Burnt Land IV / Line 2 / East Rocky Mountain VI | Fire Boar, Jr. Wraith | Lv 35 |
| 40–45 | East Rocky Mountain VII | Copper Drake | Lv 41 |
| 45–58 | Line 2 / Line 1 | Wraith | Lv 47 |
| 58–70 | Sleepy Dungeon V / III | Dark Stone Golem | Lv 58 |
| Party 42–50 | Another Path | Cold Eye | — |
Planet-helper says Line 2's Jr. Wraiths "line up along long floors, so they're easy to pierce." It warns that Monkey Forest II's spread-out floors make piercing hard, and its Zombie Lupins hit with magic. At Lv 30, Iron Arrow is level 1, so Arrow Blow is faster on single monsters. Our training guide covers every job.
Example: At Lv 47 on Line 2, stand at one end of a long floor. Wait for four or five Wraiths to walk into a line, then fire Iron Arrow. Arrow Blow the stragglers.
Bring the right party
Crossbowman attacks have no element before third job (planet-helper). A Cleric covers the holy-weak Wraiths and Dark Stone Golems, and an I/L covers the ice-weak Fire Boars and Copper Drakes. See our Cleric guide. Planet-helper lists the party bonus at +30% EXP for 4 or more players.
Return, boost, or roll an alt Crossbowman
- Coming back from old GMS? Power Knockback is a first-job skill now. Final Attack is no longer a passive. No open NPC shop sells crossbows above Lv 25 at launch (NiaMeowDB). mscw-guidebook's older note put the shop cap higher. Third job (Sniper) is in El Nath, which isn't open (planet-helper).
- Powerleveled Crossbowman: check whether its SP went into Iron Arrow or Mastery. Either can be fixed by leveling on, but Woodcrafting won't have kept pace. A powerleveling service doesn't level crafts.
- Alts: a Hunter or Crossbowman alt with Woodcrafting can make both bows and crossbows. Pair a Crossbowman with a Cleric on Line 2. See our world-first party plan.

What may change at Grand Launch
This guide describes the Founder's Access build as it was on October 13, 2026. Re-check these against Nexon's Grand Launch notes on October 21: whether crafting still stops at craft level 8, whether Forgotten Hollow, Orbis and third jobs stay closed, KPQ channel limits, NPC shop stock, and any Founder's Access-only events or packages mentioned here. Nothing here assumes a closed area or feature will open.
FAQ
What should a Crossbowman max first in MapleStory Classic? Planet-helper says Iron Arrow (maxed by Lv 44). Mscw-guidebook says Crossbow Mastery first, then Iron Arrow by around Lv 47.
Does Iron Arrow stun? No. Planet-helper says there's no stun, and damage drops with each monster the arrow passes through.
Is there a Lv 35 crossbow? No. After the Lv 30 Eagle Crow, the next one is the Lv 40 Heckler, the only Average-speed crossbow in that range (planet-helper).
Is Crossbowman better than Hunter? Neither is clearly better. Mscw-guidebook says damage is about even. Crossbowman wants flat maps and gets more DEX, and Hunter wants clustered platforms and gets a stun.
Is Final Attack: Crossbow worth it? Planet-helper calls it a toggle that loses damage on groups. Mscw-guidebook says it's a manual 360% single-target cast. Both max it.
What's the 19-SP Crossbowman build? Mscw-guidebook stops Booster at 10 and Soul Arrow at 11, then maxes Mastery, Iron Arrow, Final Attack, and Judgement. The cost is rebuffing more often.
How much STR does a Crossbowman need? 10 less than the crossbow's level from Lv 20 on, so the Lv 50 Rower needs 40 (mscw-guidebook).
