MapleStory Classic Magician Guide 1–30: Skill Build, AP, Training
MapleStory Classic Magician guide, Lv 1-30: Energy Bolt vs Magic Claw, Armor-first vs MP Recovery SP builds, the INT/LUK AP plan, wands, shields.

In this guide 14 sections
Quick summary
- Advance at level 10 with Grendel the Really Old in the Ellinia Library. There's no quest and no stat requirement (the wiki, NiaMeowDB).
- AP: all INT through level 10 (57 INT), then add LUK only when your next wand needs it. NiaMeowDB's plan puts 5 points into LUK at levels 20, 25, and 30.
- Energy Bolt vs Magic Claw: at skill level 20 they deal the same total (130 × 1 vs 65 × 2). Energy Bolt costs 16 MP instead of 20 and reaches 350 px. Magic Claw's damage is steadier and hits through terrain (planet-helper, NiaMeowDB).
- The two main guides end at different builds. NiaMeowDB goes Armor first (Guard 3, Armor 20, Max MP Increase 15) for cheaper potion bills. planet-helper goes MP Recovery first (Improved MP Recovery 15, Max MP Increase 15, then 11 points into Guard or Armor).
- Always use a shield. Wands and staves are one-handed, and shields can block physical hits outright (NiaMeowDB).
Checked against the Founder's Access build on October 13, 2026. Grand Launch is October 21, 2026; see the end of the guide for what may change.
Level 1–10 as a Beginner
- Finish the Maple Island quests. NiaMeowDB says to use the Club through level 4 and the Razor from level 5.
- Beginner SP: Three Snails 3, Recovery 3, Nimble Feet 3 (NiaMeowDB).
- Best starting roll: 4 STR / 4 DEX / 12 INT / 5 LUK. Put all 45 AP from levels 2–10 into INT, giving 57 INT.
Advance in Ellinia
Climb to the Ellinia Library and talk to Grendel (the wiki). NiaMeowDB says you get the Beginner's Wooden Wand (26 magic attack) for free, only 1 less than the Wooden Wand Flora the Fairy sells. The wiki adds that Stumps drop the Wooden Staff, so your first weapon can be free either way.
NiaMeowDB's level 10 example has 60 INT, 27 magic attack, 38 accuracy, 344 HP, and 463 MP, using a Brown Apprentice Hat and a Stolen Fence shield. At level 12, it recommends Kerning City citizenship, which later unlocks Overall INT and Gloves Magic Attack scrolls in its shop. Compare towns in our citizenship guide.
Know your six first-job skills
| Skill | Max | Lv 1 → max (launch data, planet-helper) |
|---|---|---|
| Energy Bolt | 20 | 90 → 130 basic attack, MP 8 → 16, range 350 |
| Magic Claw | 20 (needs EB 1) | 45 → 65 × 2 hits, MP 10 → 20 |
| Improved MP Recovery | 15 | 1% of Max MP every 10 s from Lv 1; item MP +5% → +20% |
| Max MP Increase | 15 (needs IMR 3) | Max MP +10% → +25% |
| Magic Guard | 15 | Moves 30% → 80% of damage to MP (36% at Lv 3, 68% at Lv 11) |
| Magic Armor | 20 (needs MG 3) | Weapon and Magic DEF +40 → +120, 300 → 600 s |
planet-helper notes that in the original game Magic Claw hit 45% harder. Classic made the two equal. Launch data kept them equal (NiaMeowDB skill pages).
Pick Energy Bolt or Magic Claw
| At max | Energy Bolt | Magic Claw |
|---|---|---|
| Damage | 130 × 1 | 65 × 2 |
| MP | 16 | 20 |
| SP | 20 | 21 (needs EB 1) |
| Range | 350 px | 300 px |
| Edge | Better knockback chance; saves 1 SP | Steadier damage; hits through walls and platforms |
Choose your SP endpoint
| Skill at level 30 | NiaMeowDB "Budget default" | planet-helper |
|---|---|---|
| Energy Bolt | 20 | 20 |
| Improved MP Recovery | 3 | 15 |
| Max MP Increase | 15 | 15 |
| Magic Guard | 3 | 11 (or 3) |
| Magic Armor | 20 | 0 (or 8) |
The order: both guides max Energy Bolt by level 17, with 1 point of Improved MP Recovery at level 11. Then they split.
- NiaMeowDB: Guard 3 by level 18, Magic Armor +3 per level from 20 to 26, then Max MP Increase to 15 by level 30.
- planet-helper: IMR 5 and MMI 10 by level 22, IMR 15 by level 25, then MMI 15 plus the Guard or Armor points by level 30.
Why they differ: NiaMeowDB's cost math says Magic Guard spends MP, and cheap MP costs twice as much per point as HP. Absorbing 100 damage costs about 50 mesos with Guard off, 68 at Guard 3, and 90 at Guard 15, so its default cuts the damage with Armor instead. planet-helper says pure-INT Magicians "can't wear the Lv 20+ robes that ask for LUK," so their Weapon DEF stays low and its last points go to Guard.
| Your situation | Pick | Source |
|---|---|---|
| You take several hard hits a minute | Armor first | NiaMeowDB |
| You cast constantly and rarely get touched | NiaMeowDB "low-contact" (MG 3 / IMR 15 / MMI 15 / MA 8) or planet-helper | NiaMeowDB, planet-helper |
| A death costs more than potions (deep maps, bosses) | Full Guard: MG 15 / IMR 3 / MMI 15 / MA 8 | NiaMeowDB |
| You do KPQ | Turn Guard on for King Slime only | planet-helper |
NiaMeowDB warns that without an SP reset, your level 30 split is permanent. The SP Reset Scroll is a Cash Shop item. If you want the full-Guard build, it says to follow its table until level 22 and then send the remaining Armor points into Guard. See our KPQ guide for the King Slime fight.
Split AP between INT and LUK
| Level | Base INT | Base LUK | Next wand (NiaMeowDB) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 57 | 5 | Wooden Wand: 20 INT |
| 15 | 82 | 5 | Hardwood Wand: 30 INT |
| 20 | 102 | 10 | Metal Wand: 40 INT / 10 LUK |
| 25 | 122 | 15 | Ice Wand: 50 INT / 15 LUK |
| 30 | 142 | 20 | Mithril Wand: 60 INT / 20 LUK |
The wiki agrees that gear sets the LUK floor: the level 15 Emerald Staff needs 30 INT and 10 LUK. NiaMeowDB adds that LUK from gear can replace base LUK. INT is also a Magician's best stat for accuracy: +0.24 accuracy per INT and +0.39 per level.
| Mob | Your level | Accuracy for 100% |
|---|---|---|
| Bubbling (Lv 15) | 15 | 31 |
| Stirge (Lv 20) | 20 | 44 |
| Zombie Mushroom (Lv 24) | 20 / 25 | 54 / 47 |
Sources conflict on whether spells can miss. NiaMeowDB and henesys.gg (from launch-client data) say offensive spells use the same hit check as physical attacks, which is what these targets assume. The MapleClassic Wiki says magic attacks "never miss," based on pre-launch testing. If your spells never show MISS in-game, you can skip these targets. Full details are in our accuracy guide.
Gear up: wand, shield, gloves
| Level | Wand | Armor | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | Wooden Wand (27 magic attack) | Brown Apprentice Hat | Flora, Serabi (Ellinia) |
| 15 | Hardwood Wand (34) | Blue Plain Robe +3 INT (male) | NiaMeowDB |
| 20 | Metal Wand (41) | Blue Morrican | NiaMeowDB |
| 25 | Ice Wand (48) | Blue Doros / Brown Doroness Robe +5 INT | NiaMeowDB |
| 30 | Mithril Wand (55, Arcforge 6) | Blue Wizard Robe +6 INT (male) | NiaMeowDB |
- Wand over staff: NiaMeowDB says every comparable wand has 3 more magic attack and an equal or lower LUK requirement. Weapon speed doesn't change spell cast time, so a lucky staff drop is still fine.
- Shield: the Pan Lid (Lv 10, 44 Weapon DEF, 8.1% Guard) beats the Mystic Shield (5.0% Guard) for blocking. Green Mushrooms drop it (NiaMeowDB).
- Gloves: five Lesser Magic Attack scrolls raise expected Energy Bolt damage 7.6%, against 1.0% from five Critical Rate scrolls. More in our scrolling guide.
- Free drops (the wiki): Red Apprentice Hat from Bubblings, Blue Basic Boots from Stirges, Emerald Staff from Green Mushrooms, Lemona gloves from Slimes, White Doros Robe from Jr. Wraiths.
Train on the right maps
| Level | Picks (NiaMeowDB Training Advisor, modeled) |
|---|---|
| 10 | The Rain-Forest East of Henesys, An Empty House |
| 15 | Rain-Forest; A Hill West of Henesys |
| 20 | Transfer Area (Stirges); Line 1 (Bubblings) |
| 25 | Ant Tunnel II and III (Zombie and Horny Mushrooms) |
| 30 | Line 1; Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North II |
NiaMeowDB's tip: sort monsters by magic defense. Bubbling has 10 and Green Mushroom has 30, so the same Energy Bolt hits Bubblings harder. The wiki warns that a Magician "empties potion bags fastest of all," so give heavy weight to how far each map is from town. It also lists Magician's Tree Dungeon for level 30. For the full map list, see our training guide.
Example: at level 25, NiaMeowDB's Armor 18 build takes a Horny Mushroom's hardest touch at 116 damage instead of 139. That's why Armor-first is cheaper when you get touched a lot.
Avoid the classic mistakes
- Maxing Magic Claw out of habit. It now does the same damage as Energy Bolt for more MP (NiaMeowDB).
- Adding LUK for the advancement. There's no stat requirement.
- Leaving full Magic Guard on while you farm (NiaMeowDB, planet-helper).
- Letting Guard drain your last MP. With no MP you can't cast, and the damage goes to HP (NiaMeowDB, the wiki).
- Leaving the shield slot empty.
Our HP/MP guide explains why Magicians have the lowest HP of any class and why washing doesn't fix it.
Pick your second job at 30
| Branch | Plays as (NiaMeowDB) | Our guide |
|---|---|---|
| Fire/Poison Wizard | Fire Arrow single target, Poison Breath damage over time | F/P guide |
| Ice/Lightning Wizard | Cold Beam single target, Thunder Bolt hits up to six | I/L guide |
| Cleric | Heal, Bless, Invincible: party support | Cleric guide |
The wiki says the choice is permanent, but all three use INT. The full process is in our job advancement guide.
Return, reroll, or level with friends
- Returning player: forget the old Magic Claw-first habit, and remember that Max MP Increase is a percentage now, so taking it late costs nothing (planet-helper).
- Party leveling: Clerics come later. For now, Energy Bolt's range lets you stay back. Group roles are in our world-first party plan.
- Paid leveling: before you look at powerleveling, read the rules below.

What may change at Grand Launch
This guide describes the Founder's Access build as it was on October 13, 2026. Re-check these against Nexon's Grand Launch notes on October 21: whether crafting still stops at craft level 8, whether Forgotten Hollow, Orbis and third jobs stay closed, KPQ channel limits, NPC shop stock, and any Founder's Access-only events or packages mentioned here. Nothing here assumes a closed area or feature will open.
FAQ
Where do you become a Magician? At level 10, from Grendel the Really Old in the Ellinia Library. There's no stat requirement (the wiki, NiaMeowDB).
Energy Bolt or Magic Claw? They deal the same total damage. Energy Bolt costs 4 less MP and reaches farther. Magic Claw is steadier and hits through terrain (planet-helper, NiaMeowDB).
Should Magicians max Magic Guard in first job? Not by default. NiaMeowDB keeps it at 3 to save potions. planet-helper puts 11 points in late, and both say to turn it on for dangerous fights.
How much LUK does a Magician need? Only what your wand needs: 10 at level 20, 15 at 25, and 20 at 30 (NiaMeowDB).
Wand or staff? Wands have 3 more magic attack at each tier, but cast speed is the same, so use whatever drops.
Does taking Max MP Increase late lose MP? No. It's a percentage, so you end up with the same MP.
