MapleStory Classic Free Market Guide: Shops, Trading, Scams
Use the MapleStory Classic Free Market: reach the 11 rooms, open a store or Hired Merchant, collect from Fredrick, price without a list.

In this guide 15 sections
Quick summary
- The Free Market is the only marketplace. Classic World has no auction house. You reach it through portals in Perion and Henesys Market, which lead to the Free Market Entrance and its 11 trading rooms (MapleClassic Wiki).
- There are three ways to sell: the trade window (both players present), a Player Store (up to 16 items, or 24 with a seasonal permit, closes when you log out), and a Hired Merchant (Free Market only, keeps selling while you're offline, removed after 24 hours).
- Collect Hired Merchant earnings from Fredrick at the Free Market Entrance.
- No in-game price list exists. The NPC sell price is the floor and the NPC shop price is the ceiling for anything an NPC stocks. Walk the rooms to see the rest.
- Most scams need you to step outside the trade window: drop trades, "pay you after," screenshots of a trade, or a request for your login.
Checked against the Founder's Access build on October 13, 2026. Grand Launch is October 21, 2026; see the end of the guide for what may change.
Get to the Free Market
- Go to Perion or Henesys. They're the only towns with a Free Market portal. In Henesys, it's in Henesys Market.
- Enter the Free Market Entrance. This lobby has no shops. Its permanent NPCs include Fredrick, the Store Banker who pays out Hired Merchant earnings, and Scrooge, the Storage Keeper, so you can move stock between characters without leaving the market.
- Pick a room. Eleven portals, labeled FM 1 to FM 11, lead to the trading rooms.
- Leave the same way. You go back to the town you came from.
| Rooms | Location | Layout | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| FM 1–6 | Lower level | Grass hall | FM 1 fills first by convention and has the most high-value listings |
| FM 7–11 | Upper level | Rock cavern | Quieter, easier for a stall to stand out |
Every room is free of monsters and NPCs, so the whole floor is open for stalls. The "FM 1 is busiest" rule is community habit, not a game mechanic (Free Market page).
While you're there, take Welcome to the Free Market!, a level 13 quest from Lewis. The wiki's money-making table lists 306 mesos and 424 EXP as the reward.
Choose how you'll sell
| Method | What you need | Where | You must be online? | Listings | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trade window | Another player | Anywhere | Yes, both players | One trade at a time | A negotiated, high-value deal |
| Player Store | Store Permit (Cash Shop) | Free Market or a field | Yes. It closes when you log out | 16 (Regular), 24 (seasonal) | Live selling, mixed stock |
| Hired Merchant | A Hired Merchant item (Cash Shop) | Free Market only | No | Not in the wiki's client data | Overnight or passive selling |
The wiki lists the Regular Store Permit and the Mushroom House Elf merchant as Cash Shop items. The four seasonal permits (Spring, Summer, Fall, Pink) are limited editions with 24 listing slots. Otherwise they're the same. The five Hired Merchant styles (Mushroom House Elf, Teddy Bear Clerk, Robot Stand, Cozy Coffeehouse, Granny's Food Stand) differ only in looks.
Open a Player Store
- Clear your inventory so the items you plan to sell are easy to find.
- Go to a Free Market room, or to a quiet spot on a field map.
- Use your Store Permit and name the shop so buyers know what it sells, for example "Lv 30 claws + Wolbis".
- Add up to 16 items (24 with a seasonal permit) and set a price for each.
- Stay logged in. The store closes when you log out.
Field stores close if a monster attacks or kills you. That's in the permit text, according to the Player shop page. If you want to sell next to a busy training map, set up where nothing walks through.
Run a Hired Merchant
- Set it up inside a Free Market room. Hired Merchants don't work in fields.
- List your items and log out if you want. The stand keeps selling.
- Come back within 24 hours. The stand is removed automatically 24 hours after you set it up.
- Talk to Fredrick at the Free Market Entrance to collect your earnings and get back unsold items and the merchant itself.
Example: you list Ilbi stars on a Hired Merchant in FM 9 before bed. The next evening, you go to the Entrance, collect your mesos from Fredrick, and set up a new stand for the next 24 hours. Don't assume you can collect early. The wiki says that rule is server-side and unconfirmed.
Find what you want to buy
Nothing in the game indexes the stalls, according to the Free Market page. You have two options: walk the rooms and check each stand, or stand in the Entrance and announce what you want.
- Start with FM 1–3. They're the busiest rooms.
- Read shop names. Sellers usually name the main item.
- Check the full tooltip before you buy: item name, level, stats, and upgrade slots left. A scrolled item and an unscrolled item can look the same in a list.
Price items without a price list
The wiki's Meso page sets a simple rule. An NPC buys an item for a fixed amount and sells one it stocks for a fixed amount. Those two figures are the floor and the ceiling. Everything between them is set by players. Use this method:
- Check the NPC sell price. Selling for less than that loses mesos.
- Check whether a town shop stocks the item. If it does, no one will pay more than the shop.
- Walk three or four rooms and note the cheapest listing of the same item.
- Price just below the cheapest if you want a quick sale, or match it if you can wait.
Example: you want to sell a level 30 crafted claw. No shop sells claws past level 25, so there's no NPC ceiling. Walk FM 1–4, find the cheapest Steel Guards, and list yours a little below it on a Hired Merchant overnight.
Items a shop can't sell sell best. These include crafted gloves, shoes, and weapons past level 30 (our equipment guide), scrolls (scrolling guide), and drop-only throwing stars. The wiki's money-making guide adds that players trade fame for mesos too.
Decide what to keep and what to sell
This follows maplestoryclassic.net's keep-or-sell table:
| Item | Keep or sell | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A weapon for your job and level range | Keep | Faster kills pay for it |
| A duplicate of the weapon you're using | Sell | It does nothing in your bag |
| Armor for a job you don't play | Sell, or store it for an alt | It's dead weight on this character |
| Gear far above your level | Don't rush to buy | Mesos you can't use yet are better spent on potions |
| Anything you can't wear or sell to a player | Sell to an NPC | A free slot beats a full bag |
Trade face to face, step by step
- Agree on the item and the full price in chat before you open the window.
- Open the trade window. Both players put in their side.
- Read the item name, its stats, and the meso amount on your own screen.
- Confirm only if everything matches. If the other player changes anything, cancel and start over.
- For large trades, take a screenshot (maplestoryclassic.net).
If a deal is too big for one window, split it into smaller trades that each finish on their own.
Spot the six common scams
| Scam | The tell | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Fake trade window | The amount changes at the last second, or the trade is cancelled and reopened while you're clicking | Read the final window on your screen every time |
| Screenshot trade | "See, it's ready, just confirm" with a picture | A picture isn't a trade. Only your trade window counts |
| Drop trading | "The trade window is bugged, let's both drop" | Never drop trade. The other player, or a friend's pet, loots both |
| "I'll pay after" | Part now, the rest later, or "send first, I'm at storage" | Nothing outside one trade window is enforceable |
| Account sharing | An offer to level your character, run you through a boss, or "check" your build | No one needs your login |
| Phishing and free cash-shop currency offers | Links to giveaways, meso generators, or a fake login page | Don't log in through links from chat. Use a unique password and two-factor authentication |
Use storage to move items between your characters
Storage is a shared bank for every character on your account, according to the wiki's Storage page. It holds 50 item slots plus mesos and charges a base fee of 100 mesos per slot. Maple Island has no Storage Keeper, so storage starts on Victoria Island. To give gear to an alt, put it in storage and log in on the alt. You don't need a trade partner.
Know the trade limits
- Almost everything trades. Only 39 of 2,820 items are untradeable, according to the Trade page. They include the Henesys and Kerning City Citizenship earrings and the starter weapons.
- Quest items are tracked separately. The wiki counts 119.
- Mesos cap at 2,147,483,647 per character (Meso page).
- Players in the Netherlands and Belgium can't trade, drop, or loot items in Global MapleStory, including Classic World. The wiki's Differences page traces this to Dutch gambling rules and says no change has been confirmed.
- No trade tax is recorded in the client. The wiki says any tax or commission would be set on the server.
If you're returning, boosted, or making an alt
- Returning from pre-Big Bang MapleStory? The Free Market works the way you remember: the same rooms, stores, and Hired Merchants, and no auction house. The wiki's Differences page lists it as unchanged. The big difference is crafting, which now produces the gloves, shoes, and higher-level weapons that sell best.
- Powerleveled or boosted? You may reach a high level with few mesos and little gear. Sell the drops you can't use first, then buy your weapon. Our mesos guide covers earning without spending.
- Making an alt? Use storage, not trades, to move gear and mesos. Set up your Hired Merchant on whichever character you'll log in on next, since you collect from Fredrick on that character.
Want a hand with this?
If you would rather skip the grind that goes with this, MapleStory Classic powerleveling services are listed on FullBoosts. Read Nexon's Terms of Service before you buy any service from anyone, FullBoosts included — a marketplace listing isn't publisher permission.
What may change at Grand Launch
This guide describes the Founder's Access build as it was on October 13, 2026. Re-check these against Nexon's Grand Launch notes on October 21: whether crafting still stops at craft level 8, whether Forgotten Hollow, Orbis and third jobs stay closed, KPQ channel limits, NPC shop stock, and any Founder's Access-only events or packages mentioned here. Nothing here assumes a closed area or feature will open.
FAQ
Does MapleStory Classic have an auction house?
No. All player trading happens in the Free Market, through the trade window, Player Stores, and Hired Merchants.
How do you get to the Free Market in MapleStory Classic World?
Take the portal in Perion or in Henesys Market to the Free Market Entrance. From there, eleven portals lead to rooms FM 1 to FM 11.
How do Hired Merchants work in Classic World?
You set one up in a Free Market room, and it keeps selling after you log out. It's removed 24 hours after setup. You collect your earnings and unsold items from Fredrick at the Entrance.
Where do you get a Store Permit?
The wiki lists the Regular Store Permit as a Cash Shop item. Seasonal permits (Spring, Summer, Fall, Pink) list 24 items instead of 16 and are limited editions.
Is there a tax on Free Market sales?
The game client doesn't record one. The wiki says any commission would be set on Nexon's servers, so check your earnings when you collect from Fredrick.
Can I open a shop outside the Free Market?
A Player Store, yes. It works on field maps, but it closes if a monster attacks or kills you. Hired Merchants only work inside the Free Market.
How do you trade with another player without getting scammed?
Keep the whole deal in one trade window, read the final amounts on your own screen before you confirm, and never drop trade or hand over items on a promise.
