THE GUIDE

Quick summary

  • Every scroll in Classic World comes in four tiers: Lesser (100%), Intermediate (60%, double the gain), Greater (10%, triple), and Chaos (10%, quadruple, and it can destroy the item).
  • Intermediate gives the most per scroll on average for 46 of the 52 scroll families, according to the mapleclassic.wiki. Greater is the trap: on average it gives less than a Lesser.
  • For HP and MP scrolls on hats, tops, and bottoms, Lesser is the best tier. The wiki notes this is the only case where it wins.
  • metaroad says there are no White Scrolls, no Clean Slates, and no 30% or 70% scrolls. Chaos is a fixed gain at 10% (+4 on most families), and at launch you can only get it through Arcforger crafting.
  • Weapon scrolls got stronger at launch. NiaMeowDB's changelog shows all 14 weapon families' Greater going from +3 to +4 attack and Chaos from +4 to +5. Wand and staff magic attack went from +6 to +8 (Greater) and +8 to +10 (Chaos). Gloves didn't change.
  • Slots depend on the item type. metaroad lists 10 for an overall, 7 for weapons, hats, tops, bottoms, and shields, and 5 for shoes, gloves, earrings, and capes.

Checked against the Founder's Access build on October 13, 2026. Grand Launch is October 21, 2026; see the end of the guide for what may change.

Learn the four tiers

Tier Success Gain (most stats) Gain (magic attack and DEF) Gain (HP and MP) Can destroy the item?
Lesser 100% +1 +2 +10 No
Intermediate 60% +2 +4 +15 No
Greater 10% +3 +6 +20 No
Chaos 10% +4 +8 +25 Yes, on half of failures

Launch change for weapon scrolls. The table above is the wiki's general tier pattern. NiaMeowDB's changelog (COT2 vs the launch build, datamined) lists 28 changed scrolls: Greater and Chaos for all 14 weapon families. Metaroad's Oct 8 patch notes post agrees.

Weapon scroll (launch) Lesser Intermediate Greater Chaos
Weapon attack (swords, axes, blunt weapons, spears, polearms, bows, crossbows, daggers, claws) +1 +2 +4 (was +3) +5 (was +4)
Wand or staff magic attack +2 +4 +8 (was +6) +10 (was +8)

Gloves attack and magic attack scrolls aren't on the changelog, so they keep +3 Greater and +4 Chaos. The Chaos destruction text is unchanged: "Upon failure, the item has a 50% chance to be destroyed." Some wiki item pages, last edited Sep 4, still show older or mixed numbers. For example, Staff Magic Attack Scroll: Greater reads +3 there. Trust the in-game tooltip.

The wiki says the game has 208 scrolls in 52 families. Each family covers one item type and one stat, and every family comes in all four tiers. The icon only tells you the tier, not what the scroll is for.

Do the expected-gain math

You use up the scroll whether it works or not, so what matters is the average stat you get per scroll: success rate times gain.

Tier Most stats HP and MP
Lesser +1.00 +10.00
Intermediate +1.20 +9.00
Greater +0.30 +2.00
Chaos +0.40 (and the item can break) +2.50 (and the item can break)

For weapon attack scrolls at launch, Greater averages +0.40 and Chaos +0.50 per scroll. Wand and staff magic attack averages +2.00 (Lesser), +2.40 (Intermediate), +0.80 (Greater) and +1.00 (Chaos). The stronger Greater and Chaos still don't beat Intermediate on average.

metaroad works this through for a 7-slot weapon:

  • 7 Lessers: exactly +7 weapon attack, with no risk.
  • 7 Intermediates: +8.4 on average. 71% of weapons end up with +8 or more, but only 2.8% get all seven to succeed, and more than 1 in 4 ends up worse than the Lesser route.

Unsettled mechanic: metaroad and planet-helper's scroll simulator assume a failed scroll still uses up the slot, as it did in the original game. The wiki says the client doesn't record whether it does. The average-per-scroll figures hold either way. What changes is the total an item can reach.

Example: you have a 5-slot pair of gloves and three Intermediate Gloves Attack scrolls. Use all three, then fill the last two slots with Lessers. On average you'll end up around +5.6, against exactly +5 from five Lessers.

Know what a Chaos scroll really costs

The wiki reads the Chaos data as a 50% chance of destruction when the scroll fails. That works out to a 45% chance of losing the item each time you use one.

Chaos scrolls used Chance the item survives
1 55.0%
3 16.6%
5 5.0%
7 1.5%
9 0.5%

metaroad says fewer than 1 in 5 items get even one Chaos success before breaking, whether they have 5, 7, or 10 slots. The wiki adds that if the 50 means a flat 50% chance on every use, the real odds are worse than this table.

Returning players, note: metaroad says this Chaos isn't the old Chaos Scroll. It doesn't roll a random range. It gives a fixed gain (+4 on most families, +5 on weapon attack scrolls at launch) with the destruction risk of the old Dark Scrolls, and it even uses the old Dark Scroll icon.

Get Chaos scrolls through crafting

According to metaroad, at launch you can only get Chaos scrolls by crafting. When an Arcforger crafts a Lesser scroll using a Scroll Crafting Catalyst, there's a chance it comes out as Intermediate, Greater, or Chaos instead. This only works for the 24 families Arcforgers can craft, so there's no weapon Chaos at launch. You get the catalyst from the quest An Arcforger in My Own Right! (level 25, once) and from Zombie Mushmom. Our bosses guide covers that fight.

Know your slots and where stats go

Item Slots (metaroad) What it can take
Overall 10 Defense, plus STR, DEX, INT, or LUK. It's the only body armor that takes main-stat scrolls.
Weapon 7 Weapon attack, or magic attack for wands and staves
Hat 7 Accuracy, HP, or MP
Top / Bottom 7 each Defense, HP, or MP
Shield 7 Defense or accuracy
Gloves 5 Weapon attack, magic attack, accuracy, or crit rate
Earring 5 Main stats, crit damage, or avoidability
Cape 5 Main stats, defense, magic defense, or accuracy
Shoes 5 Jump, speed, or avoidability

The wiki counts 310 items with 5 slots, 798 with 7, and 95 with 10. metaroad points out that weapon attack on gloves counts toward the same total as your weapon's, so +1 on gloves is worth exactly the same as +1 on your weapon.

Overall or top and bottom? A top and bottom have 14 slots between them, against an overall's 10. But only the overall takes main-stat scrolls. metaroad says Magicians and Warriors can buy overalls from level 15, while Thieves and Bowmen don't have one at launch.

Pick a tier for each slot

Item Best tier Why
A weapon you'll keep for 15+ levels Intermediate It has the best average, and your weapon lasts long enough to pay off
A shop weapon you'll replace soon Lesser, or nothing Not worth spending good scrolls on
Gloves (attack or magic attack) Lesser or Intermediate metaroad's top pick for guaranteed damage, and a slot many players forget
Overall (main stat) Lesser or Intermediate 10 slots, and the only body armor that takes main stats
Hat, top, or bottom (HP or MP) Lesser The one case where Lesser has the best average
Earring or cape (stats) Intermediate or Greater from quests Free quest scrolls cover most of these slots
An item you can afford to lose Chaos Only once everything else is filled

Get scrolls without overspending

Buy Lessers from NPC shops (two may be closed)

metaroad says no shop sells anything above Lesser:

Shop Where Sells
El Moth The Tree That Grew III, near Ellinia Every weapon family
Tulcus The Swamp of Despair II, near Kerning City Hat, top, overall, bottom, shoes, shield, and cape. metaroad calls these the cheapest scrolls in the game.
Flint Henesys Town Hall Top and bottom DEF, overall STR and DEX, earring crit damage, gloves attack and magic attack
Ben Kerning City Civic Center Top and bottom DEF, overall INT and LUK, earring evasion, gloves attack. NiaMeowDB's launch-price list shows no gloves magic attack here.

NiaMeowDB groups El Moth and Tulcus as Forgotten Hollow vendors and lists them at COT2 prices. Forgotten Hollow is closed at launch, so check in game that they're open before you plan around them. Flint and Ben are citizenship shops. planet-helper says the 100% glove attack scrolls need citizenship grade 9, and the overall stat scrolls need grade 7. Our citizenship guide covers how to get there.

Collect quest scrolls by level

Level Quest (metaroad) Scroll
16 Pia and the Blue Mushroom Hat accuracy (Lesser, Intermediate, or Greater, random)
20 Jane and the Mushroom One random Intermediate weapon scroll (1 in 14 matches your weapon)
21 / 27 Proof of Companionship / Regained Vitality Intermediate earring stat scroll (your choice at 27)
36 Collecting 150 Cursed Dolls Intermediate gloves attack or magic attack
48, 48 Building a New House For Blackbull, Taking Out the Alligators 1 A Greater scroll for your weapon type, your choice (two at launch; a third quest, Welcome to the Hollow at Lv 39, turns in inside Forgotten Hollow, which is closed)
42 / 43 Pia's Gift / The Road Back Home Greater cape or earring stat scroll
44 Jane's Final Challenge Intermediate or Greater gloves attack or magic attack

Citizenship story chains add more: earring stat scrolls at grade 4, overall armor scrolls at grade 6, and gloves crit rate scrolls at grade 8. metaroad also lists monster drops, such as Gloves Crit. Rate Scroll: Greater from Blue Mushrooms and Hat Accuracy Scroll: Greater from Jr. Wraiths. Our quests guide puts these quests in order by level.

Scroll by job

Job First priority Then
Warriors Weapon attack (Intermediate) and an overall STR (Lesser) Gloves attack, HP Lessers on hat, top, and bottom
Magicians Wand or staff magic attack (+2 per Lesser), overall INT Gloves magic attack, MP Lessers
Bowmen Bow or crossbow attack, gloves attack Earring and cape DEX from quests. There's no overall at launch.
Thieves Claw or dagger attack, gloves attack Earring and cape LUK. Gloves crit rate suits Assassins.

Compare scrolling strategies

Strategy Result Risk Best for
All Lesser Exactly the slot count in stats None Budget gear, HP/MP slots
All Intermediate 1.2 per slot on average You can end up below the Lesser route Gear you'll keep
Greater from quests only A bonus when it lands None, since the scroll was free Earrings, capes, weapons
Chaos at the end +4 per success (+5 weapon attack, +10 wand or staff magic attack) 45% chance of losing the item per scroll Spare items only

If you're returning, boosted, or making an alt

  • Returning from pre-Big Bang MapleStory? metaroad says the 30% and 70% scrolls, White Scrolls, and Clean Slates aren't in the game. Chaos gives a fixed gain (+4, or +5 on weapon attack scrolls) instead of a random roll. Main-stat scrolls only exist for earrings, capes, and overalls.
  • Powerleveled to 30+? You'll have skipped the quest scrolls listed above. Do the ones still at your level, especially the two Greater weapon scroll quests at Lv 48. Don't spend Intermediates on a weapon you'll replace in five levels.
  • Making an alt? Our mesos guide covers funding alts. Lessers for armor slots from Tulcus are the cheapest way to strengthen an alt. Keep quest scrolls for the jobs they suit.

What may change at Grand Launch

This guide describes the Founder's Access build as it was on October 13, 2026. Re-check these against Nexon's Grand Launch notes on October 21: whether crafting still stops at craft level 8, whether Forgotten Hollow, Orbis and third jobs stay closed, KPQ channel limits, NPC shop stock, and any Founder's Access-only events or packages mentioned here. Nothing here assumes a closed area or feature will open.

FAQ

What is the best scroll tier in MapleStory Classic?

Intermediate, for most stats. It averages +1.2 per scroll, against +1.0 for Lesser. For HP and MP scrolls, Lesser is best.

Are there White Scrolls in MapleStory Classic World?

No. metaroad says there are no White Scrolls, no Clean Slates, and no 30% or 70% scrolls.

How do Chaos scrolls work in Classic World?

A Chaos scroll gives a fixed gain with a 10% success rate: +4 on most families, +5 on weapon attack scrolls, and +10 on wand and staff magic attack scrolls at launch (NiaMeowDB changelog). Half of all failures destroy the item, which works out to a 45% chance of losing it each time you use one.

Where do I get Chaos scrolls?

At launch, only through Arcforger crafting with a Scroll Crafting Catalyst. metaroad says there are no weapon Chaos scrolls yet.

Does a failed scroll use up a slot?

The original game worked that way, and metaroad and planet-helper's simulator assume it still does. The wiki says the game files don't settle it.

How many slots do items have?

metaroad lists 10 for an overall, 7 for weapons, hats, tops, bottoms, and shields, and 5 for shoes, gloves, earrings, and capes.

What should I scroll first?

A weapon you'll keep and your gloves, for weapon or magic attack. metaroad calls gloves a slot most players forget.
