THE GUIDE

Quick summary

  • Avoidability (EVA) comes from LUK and DEX. NiaMeowDB's formula is floor(LUK ÷ 3) + floor(DEX ÷ 6) + 5, plus gear and skills. The MapleClassic Wiki says the constants "are not yet confirmed."
  • Dodging only works on physical hits. Monster magic connects no matter your EVA (wiki). Monster skills get through shield and claw guards too (NiaMeowDB).
  • The two sources' dodge models disagree a lot. In NiaMeowDB's model, a level 33 character still gets hit 72% of the time by a Curse Eye at 80 EVA. The wiki's mirrored model has the same character almost never hit at 60 EVA. Neither source has tested its dodge model on incoming hits.
  • Weapon Def. works as a small cut, not a shield. The wiki says every 5 Weapon Def. removes about 1 damage per hit. NiaMeowDB's curve trims more from small hits. At 100 Weapon Def., a Curse Eye still hits for roughly 180 to 285 across both models.
  • At launch, Bless cuts all damage taken by 15%, and Invincible's reduction fell to 20%. Meso Guard, Hyper Body and Claw Guard are 3rd job skills, so they aren't in Classic World yet.

Checked against the Founder's Access build on October 13, 2026. Grand Launch is October 21, 2026; see the end of the guide for what may change.

Know where your avoidability comes from

Stat or skill Avoidability or defense it gives Source

What your stats give, using NiaMeowDB's formula. These are example stat spreads, not recommended builds:

Example stats Base EVA
LUK 4, DEX 25 (early Warrior) 10
LUK 4, DEX 60 (Warrior with DEX for accuracy) 16
LUK 25, DEX 120 (Bowman) 33
LUK 120, DEX 40 (Thief) 51
LUK 160, DEX 60 (Thief) 68

Bow Mastery and Bless used to give Evasion. Both lost it at launch. Bow Mastery now gives Critical Rate and Speed, and Bless now cuts damage taken (NiaMeowDB). Our launch skill changes guide has the full list.

Check whether a monster hits you

Both sources scale the monster's accuracy by the level gap, then roll it against your EVA. They differ in three places:

Step NiaMeowDB model Wiki model
Level gap G = max(0, your level − monster level). Monster accuracy ÷ (5 × (G + 51)) Same scaling
Your EVA Shrinks as it grows: EVA ÷ (1 + EVA ÷ 80), then ÷ (1 + G ÷ 40) Used as is
Roll spread Wider when the values are close Wider when the values are close
Floor About 2–3% when your EVA is far ahead, plus an 8% always-hit term, for roughly 10% minimum No floor stated
Confidence Listed as a formula, no test data shown "Treat the dodge percentages here as a community model"

We ran both models on the wiki's Curse Eye stats (Level 33, Accuracy 112) for a level 33 character:

Your EVA Hit chance (NiaMeowDB) Hit chance (wiki model)
20 100% 100%
40 100% 75%
60 100% 0%
80 72% 0%
100 52% 0%
120 38% 0%
150 23% 0%
200 10% 0%

That's our arithmetic from the published formulas, not an in-game measurement. Here's how to read it:

  • Low EVA means you get hit, either way. A Warrior or Magician at 10–20 EVA takes every hit under both models. Plan around defense and HP, not dodging.
  • The models split at Thief-level EVA. By the wiki's mirrored model, a Thief at 60 EVA would almost never be touched by level 30 monsters. By NiaMeowDB's, the same Thief still takes nearly every hit. Until someone tests it in Classic World, trust neither number exactly.
  • The NiaMeowDB floor means you're never untouchable. Even at very high EVA, its model leaves about a 10% hit chance.

Run the numbers on real monsters

NiaMeowDB's model on the wiki's monster stats, for a level 30 character. Again, this is our math, not a test:

Monster (wiki) Level Accuracy EVA 51 (Bowman with Focus) EVA 66 (Thief with Nimble Body) EVA 100
Horny Mushroom 22 94 92% 64% 27%
Zombie Mushroom 24 99 100% 72% 35%
Wild Boar 25 101 100% 75% 37%
Mano 20 97 99% 71% 34%
Fire Boar 32 110 100% 88% 49%
Curse Eye 33 112 100% 91% 52%
Drake 50 129 100% 100% 79%

Under the wiki's mirrored model, the 66 and 100 EVA columns would read 0% for every monster here. The 51 EVA column would range from 0% (the mushrooms, Wild Boar and Mano) to 48% (Drake).

One quirk to know about: taken literally, NiaMeowDB's formula divides your EVA by (1 + G ÷ 40). That shrinks your EVA faster than the monster's accuracy as you out-level it. So a 38 Thief gets hit slightly more often by a Curse Eye than a 33 Thief does: 76% vs 72% at 80 EVA. The wiki says out-leveling helps you dodge.

Cut the damage that lands

Step NiaMeowDB model Wiki model
Monster roll Attack × 1.1 to 1.5 Attack × 1.0 to 1.5
Defense Multiply by (1 − DEF ÷ (DEF + 300 + 2 × hit)), then subtract DEF ÷ 25 + your level ÷ 10 Subtract floor(min(DEF × monster level ÷ 70, DEF ÷ 5))
Minimum 1 damage 1 damage
Confidence Listed as a formula "Confirmed by in-game testing"

Curse Eye (Weapon ATK 202, per the wiki) against a level 33 character, at the low, middle and high roll:

Your Weapon Def. NiaMeowDB (low / mid / high) Wiki (low / mid / high)
0 218 / 259 / 299 202 / 252 / 303
50 202 / 242 / 281 192 / 242 / 293
100 188 / 226 / 265 182 / 232 / 283
150 175 / 212 / 250 172 / 222 / 273
200 163 / 200 / 236 162 / 212 / 263

What it means:

  • Defense matters less than old players expect. Going from 0 to 200 Weapon Def. cuts a mid-roll Curse Eye hit by about 16–23%, depending on the model.
  • Defense helps most against small hits. The wiki says the flat cut "matters most against monsters that hit often for small amounts and least against the heavy, infrequent hits of a boss."
  • Magic hits use Magic Def. In NiaMeowDB's damage formula guide, magic attacks use MDEF and skip the dodge and guard steps.
  • Elements come after defense. NiaMeowDB applies elemental resistance after defense. Touch damage has no element, so resistance never reduces it.

For bigger fights, more HP usually does more than more defense. See our HP washing guide and potions guide.

Use your job's defensive skills

Job Skill Launch value at max What it does Source
Warrior Iron Body Weapon Def. +25%, 600 sec Scales your existing Weapon Def. NiaMeowDB
Magician Magic Guard 80% of HP damage moved to MP Spends MP instead of HP NiaMeowDB
Magician Magic Armor Weapon Def. and Magic Def. +120, 600 sec Flat defense NiaMeowDB
Cleric Invincible Physical damage −20%, 300 sec (30% in COT2) Cuts touch damage only, not monster attacks or magic NiaMeowDB
Cleric Bless All damage taken −15%, 300 sec (party) Applies to every hit, after other reductions NiaMeowDB
Bowman Focus Evasion +25, Accuracy +20 Raises EVA NiaMeowDB
Thief Nimble Body Evasion +15, Accuracy +15 Raises EVA NiaMeowDB
Thief Dark Sight "Disappear into the shadows" Normal movement speed at max NiaMeowDB

NiaMeowDB also models Meso Guard, Hyper Body and Claw Guard. Its skill pages list them under Chief Bandit, Dragon Knight and Hermit, which are all 3rd jobs. Classic World launches with 1st and 2nd job only, so ignore those for now.

Two more NiaMeowDB rules worth knowing:

  • After you're hit, you're immune for 1.5 seconds. A monster attack that misses you or that you block gives the same 1.5 seconds.
  • A knockback gives about 0.27 seconds of airtime. NiaMeowDB calls this "a physics estimate."

Pick a defense plan by job

This is our reading of the formulas above, not a tested build:

Job Plan Why
Warrior Max HP, keep Iron Body up, buy armor upgrades EVA stays low. Iron Body scales the Weapon Def. you already have.
Magician Magic Guard first, then Magic Armor Magic Guard moves 80% of damage to MP, so MP potions are your HP.
Cleric Bless for the party, Invincible for touch damage Bless cuts every hit by 15%. Invincible only stops touch damage.
Bowman Focus up while training +25 EVA, but under NiaMeowDB's model you'll still be hit often. Range is your real defense.
Thief Nimble Body, LUK gear Highest EVA of any job. How much it helps depends on which model is right.

Our Assassin and Cleric guides cover skill order.

Avoid the common mistakes

  • Buying armor just for defense. At 200 Weapon Def., a Curse Eye's top roll (about 300 before defense) still lands for 236 to 263. Check how much HP you'd gain for the same mesos.
  • Relying on dodge against magic. EVA doesn't stop magic attacks (wiki).
  • Using Invincible as an all-purpose shield. It only cuts touch damage (NiaMeowDB).
  • Trusting an old guide for Bless. Bless no longer gives Evasion at launch.
  • Planning around Meso Guard or Hyper Body. They're 3rd job skills and aren't in Classic World yet.
  • Ignoring fall damage. NiaMeowDB's base fall damage runs 24 to 36 on maps where it's on.

Plan alts and returning players

  • Coming back from old MapleStory? Classic World has no 3rd job yet, so Meso Guard, Hyper Body and Power Guard-style tanking aren't available. Bless and Invincible changed at launch (NiaMeowDB).
  • Making a Thief alt? Don't assume it'll dodge everything. Until one of the models is tested, carry potions as if you'll take most hits.
  • Leveling through dangerous maps? Mages with Magic Guard handle chip damage well if their MP holds up. Our MapleStory Classic hub and powerleveling page cover faster routes.
  • Scrolling gear? Our scrolling guide covers DEF and Evasion scrolls. The outgoing side, your hit rate on monsters, is in our accuracy guide.

What may change at Grand Launch

This guide describes the Founder's Access build as it was on October 13, 2026. Re-check these against Nexon's Grand Launch notes on October 21: whether crafting still stops at craft level 8, whether Forgotten Hollow, Orbis and third jobs stay closed, KPQ channel limits, NPC shop stock, and any Founder's Access-only events or packages mentioned here. Nothing here assumes a closed area or feature will open.

FAQ

How is avoidability calculated in MapleStory Classic? NiaMeowDB uses floor(LUK ÷ 3) + floor(DEX ÷ 6) + 5, plus gear and skills. The wiki says the constants aren't confirmed yet.

Does LUK make Thieves dodge more? Yes. LUK is the main EVA stat in both sources. How much dodge you get from it depends on which model is right, and the two disagree a lot.

Can you dodge magic attacks? No. The wiki says monster magic connects regardless of avoidability. NiaMeowDB's model sends magic around the dodge and guard steps.

How much does Weapon Def. reduce damage? About 1 damage per 5 Weapon Def. against monsters level 14 and up, per the wiki. NiaMeowDB's curve gives a similar result at mid rolls.

What does Bless do for defense now? It cuts all damage taken by 15% at max, for physical and magic hits. It no longer gives Evasion (NiaMeowDB).

Does Invincible block monster skills? No. NiaMeowDB says it reduces touch damage only. Its launch value is 20% at max.

Is there a minimum hit chance? In NiaMeowDB's model, yes: about 10% even at very high EVA. The wiki's model states none.
