MapleStory Classic Shield Guide: Every Shield and Scroll

A shield trades your two-handed weapon's damage for defense and a chance to block. This MapleStory Classic shield guide lists every shield from level 10 to 50 with stats and where to get it after Grand Launch, covers the Smithing Tower Shield upgrade, compares a shield with a two-handed weapon, and shows every way to get Shield DEF and Accuracy scrolls.

Quick summary

• Shields are mostly a warrior item. Of the 23 shields in the client, 16 are warrior-only. Magicians get two, thieves get three wristguards, and two fit any job (maplestory.quest).
• River in Perion sells warrior shields only through level 25, from the 4,000-meso Wooden Buckler to the 15,000-meso Red Triangular Shield. The level 30 Red Cross Shield isn't in his live stock (NiaMeowDB's complete shop list).
• Past 25, shields come from drops, other players and one Smithing upgrade. The Battle Shield (35) trades at a median of about 13,400 mesos on HubCW's player market.
• Every shield has 7 slots and takes Shield DEF or Shield Accuracy scrolls (maplestory.quest). Tulcus sells the DEF Lesser for 20,000 mesos, and Arcforge crafts both Lessers at craft level 5 (NiaMeowDB).
• The shield's main job is defense. The client text on every shield reads "Gives a chance to block enemy attacks entirely" (HubCW).

Levels 60 and 70 have Legend and Ancient shields (170 to 192 weapon DEF), but maplestory.quest shows only older-version drops for them, and NiaMeowDB lists no recipe, shop, quest or confirmed drop for the Silver Legend Shield.

The Tower Shield upgrade is a Smithing recipe that uses the recipe level the Tower Shields share with level 40 gear (craft level 8, per maplestory.quest). It adds 2 weapon DEF and 20 HP or MP. Craft level 8 is the highest level open in v1.0.0, so the upgrade is craftable now. Our Smithing guide covers the recipe and leveling, and our ore guide covers the Mithril and Adamantium Ingots. Your character must be at least level 40 to gain craft EXP at craft level 8.

HubCW shows no trades yet for the Mystic Shield, Esther Shield or any wristguard. For now, treat magician and thief shields as rare finds, not a planned upgrade.

Get a free shield from Blackbull

Fixing Blackbull's House, from Blackbull in Perion at level 11+, gives one random shield from a two-item pool: Wooden Buckler (90%) or Steel Shield (10%) (maplestory.quest). Our quests worth doing guide lists it as easy if you're training near Perion. Either result saves you 4,000 to 6,000 mesos.

HP matters too. The Adamantium Tower Shield's +20 HP and the 7 slots of Shield DEF help most on bosses like Mushmom, where one hit can take a large share of a level 40 warrior's HP. That's our reasoning, not a sourced test.

Our view: take a shield when you're under-leveled for a map, bossing with a group, or saving DEX. Take a two-handed weapon for solo grinding speed. This is our recommendation, not a sourced ranking.

No shop sells the Accuracy Lesser, so Arcforge is its only steady source; it costs about 10,800 mesos in fee and gems by our Arcforge guide's math. Nexon's Magic Box list also names Shield Evasion Intermediate and Greater scrolls, which the community databases don't record yet. Treat those as unconfirmed until one shows up in game.

Shields can't take attack scrolls. If you're short on accuracy, a few Accuracy Lessers on the shield are the only damage-adjacent use. Most players should spend scrolls on gloves and the weapon first (our scrolling guide).

Avoid these shield mistakes

1. Buying the Mithril Buckler without 10 DEX. It's the first shield with a DEX requirement (maplestory.quest).
2. Chaos scrolling a shield. A shield adds defense, not damage, so a 50% destruction risk rarely pays off. That's our view.
3. Planning on the Orbis or El Nath shield shops. maplestory.quest marks them as Closed Online Test 2 only.
4. Carrying a shield on a Spearman. Spears and polearms are two-handed, so the slot stays empty.

Alts and returning players

• Warrior alts: Blackbull's quest gives every new character a shield. Don't buy one at 10.
• Magician and thief alts: skip shields. The few that exist have no recorded release source yet.
• Returning players: the shield names match the original game, but the Smithing Tower Shield upgrade is new (maplestory.quest), and crafting is new to Classic World. Shoes are covered in our shoes guide and the other one-handed weapons in our swords guide.

What changed for shields at Grand Launch

Grand Launch (v1.0.0, October 21, 2026) didn't change any shield's stats. What it changed or confirmed:

• River's stock is final for now: his complete 31-item list after launch stops at the level 25 Red Triangular Shield (NiaMeowDB).
• Crafting still stops at craft level 8, which is exactly the level the Tower Shield upgrade needs (henesys.gg).
• GM event Magic Boxes can give Shield DEF Intermediates and Greaters (Nexon).
• Warrior defense buffs: Iron Body now adds +20–40% Weapon DEF, up from +5–25%, which stacks with a shield's defense for boss fights (Nexon).
• Shield Guard got a new sound effect on October 15; nothing else about it changed (Nexon).

FAQ

Where do I buy shields in MapleStory Classic? River in Perion sells warrior shields from 10 to 25, and Silver in Lith Harbor sells the Stolen Fence and Wooden Buckler (NiaMeowDB).

Can magicians use shields? Yes. The Mystic Shield (22) and Esther Shield (35) are for magicians, but neither has a confirmed release source yet (maplestory.quest).

Should a Fighter use a shield? Fighters can, with a one-handed sword or axe. Our Fighter guide favors the two-handed axe for damage. A shield saves 5 DEX per tier (wiki).

What scrolls work on shields? Shield DEF and Shield Accuracy, at the usual 100/60/10/10% odds (maplestory.quest). Tulcus sells the DEF Lesser for 20,000 mesos, and Arcforge crafts both Lessers at craft level 5.

How do I get the Adamantium Tower Shield? Smithing: a Steel Tower Shield plus 10 Adamantium Ingots (maplestory.quest).

Does River sell the Red Cross Shield? No. River's live stock stops at the level 25 Red Triangular Shield (NiaMeowDB). Older records listing a 24,000-meso Red Cross Shield don't match the shop since Grand Launch.
