MapleStory Classic Fighter Guide: Axe vs Sword, Build, Training
MapleStory Classic Fighter guide: axe vs sword compared, first- and second-job SP builds, Rage and Final Attack explained, crafted axes.

In this guide 15 sections
Quick summary
- Go with a two-handed axe for now. Planet-helper says you can craft the axe line (Niam at Lv 35, Sabretooth at 40, The Rising at 50), while two-handed swords have no crafting recipe after the Lv 30 Aluminum Baseball Bat.
- Mscw-guidebook adds a caveat. The axe averages about 4% more damage per hit, but against some monsters the sword kills in fewer hits, and Sword Mastery gives +20 accuracy.
- Second-job SP: 1 point each in Rush, Axe Mastery 5, Booster, and Final Attack, then Mastery 20, Rage 30, Final Attack 30, Booster 20, and Rush 20. That's 120 of your 121 SP (planet-helper).
- Rage gives your party +40 attack power and costs you 40 weapon defense. It's worth more in a party than solo (mscw-guidebook).
- Route: Ant Tunnel I, Wild Boar II, The Burnt Land II, then Cold Eyes at Another Path, Drakes, Line 2, and Wild Kargo by Lv 62.
Checked against the Founder's Access build on October 13, 2026. Grand Launch is October 21, 2026; see the end of the guide for what may change.
Decide whether Fighter fits you
Mscw-guidebook says to choose Fighter "if you enjoy grouping monsters or playing in a party." Final Attack hits up to 3 targets and Rage buffs everyone nearby. The trade-off: "Against one durable target, the extra targets contribute nothing."
| Warrior branch | Party value | Multi-target | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fighter | Rage, +40 attack power to the party | Final Attack hits up to 3 | Axe or sword (planet-helper, mscw) |
| Page | — | Final Attack hits 1 (planet-helper) | Blunt weapons and swords |
| Spearman | — | Final Attack hits 1 | Spears and polearms |

Build first job (Lv 10–30)
First job gives you 61 SP, but maxing all six skills takes 105 (mscw-guidebook). Here are the builds side by side:
| Skill | planet-helper | mscw standard | mscw single-target | mscw multi-target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Improved HP Recovery | 3 | 3 | 15 | 15 |
| Max HP Increase | 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 |
| Precise Strikes | 15 | 15 | 15 | 15 |
| Iron Body | 0 | 0 | 7 | 7 |
| Power Strike | 20 | 20 | 20 | 1 |
| Slash Blast | 20 | 20 | 1 | 20 |
Mscw-guidebook gives Precise Strikes "high priority," because a missed skill still costs MP and time. It suggests maxing Power Strike first and skipping Slash Blast early on sparse maps. Planet-helper notes that each weapon type has its own Mastery, Booster, and Final Attack skills, so if you split points between sword and axe you'll run short. Pick one weapon line and stay with it.
Advance to Fighter at Lv 30
From planet-helper:
- Talk to Dances with Balrog in Perion's Warriors' Sanctuary. The first two steps give 4,780 EXP each.
- Go to the Warrior Job Instructor on West Rocky Mountain IV and enter Warrior's Rocky Mountain.
- Collect 30 Dark Marbles (Warrior).
- Bring The Proof of a Hero back and choose Fighter.
All jobs are covered in our job advancement guide.
Choose axe or sword
| Factor | Two-handed axe | Two-handed sword | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damage multiplier (swing/stab) | 3 / 2 (about 2.6 average) | 2.5 / 2.5 | mscw-guidebook |
| Mastery bonus | 25% chance to bleed for one hit's damage over 3 seconds, ignoring defense | +20 accuracy (about 42 DEX) | planet-helper, mscw |
| Crafted weapons Lv 35–50 | Niam, Sabretooth, The Rising | None after Aluminum Baseball Bat (Lv 30) | planet-helper |
| Damage vs best available sword | +4% at 30, +11% at 40, +13% at 50–60; sword +13% at 70 | — | planet-helper (bleed not counted) |
| Ligators at Lv 30 | 2.15 hits on average | 2 hits | mscw-guidebook |
Our read: use the axe from 30 to 60. The sword's lead at Lv 70 depends on weapons from old drop tables that haven't been confirmed for Classic. The sword makes sense if you're missing a lot and don't want to put more points into DEX. Mscw-guidebook notes the +20 accuracy "adds no damage" against monsters you already never miss.
Example: You're Lv 30 and farming Ligators. Mscw-guidebook's numbers favor the sword there: 2 hits every time versus 2.15 on average with the axe. At Lv 40 on Lorangs the axe takes 10.1% fewer hits. Weigh where you'll actually be fighting.
Plan your second-job SP
Planet-helper's order:
| Step | Skill | Level | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rush | 1 | Charge forward and knock back up to 6 monsters; 2-second cooldown |
| 2 | Axe Mastery | 5 | Unlocks Booster (needs 5) and Final Attack (needs 3) |
| 3 | Axe Booster | 1 | +2 attack-speed stages |
| 4 | Final Attack: Axe | 1 | Turn it on |
| 5 | Axe Mastery | 20 | Mastery 10, 25% bleed |
| 6 | Rage | 30 | +40 attack power for the party, −40 weapon defense, 300 seconds |
| 7 | Final Attack: Axe | 30 | 25% chance, 200% damage, up to 3 targets |
| 8 | Axe Booster | 20 | Lasts 300 seconds |
| 9 | Rush | 20 | MP cost 15 |
Mscw-guidebook uses the same final totals (Mastery 20, Final Attack 30, Booster 20, Rage 30, Rush 20), which is 120 SP. It warns that maxed Rush, used every time the cooldown ends, costs about 450 MP a minute.
Understand Final Attack and Rage
Final Attack: at launch it isn't a passive. Your attack skills have a 25% chance (at every level) to enable it for 60 seconds; you then cast it for 140% at level 1 and 200% at max, on up to 3 targets, for 20 HP and 18 MP at max (NiaMeowDB launch tooltip). Points only add damage, not trigger rate.

Rage: mscw-guidebook stresses that this is +40 attack power, not weapon attack. It measured about 1 weapon attack as worth 4–5 attack power. Its model shows Rage adding about 20.4% damage at Lv 30, 10.2% at 50, and 9.2% at 70. Damage taken rises about 18.2% at Lv 30 and 9.5% at Lv 70. In a party, several people get the buff while only you take the defense penalty.
Craft your axes
Planet-helper's path:
| Level | Weapon | Attack | STR / DEX | Source | Materials |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | Blue Axe | 50 | 65 / 30 | No open NPC shop at launch (NiaMeowDB) | Drop or Free Market |
| 35 | Niam | 55 | 75 / 35 | Weaponcrafting 7 | 4 Iron Ingot, 3 Emerald, 21 Screw |
| 40 | Sabretooth | 60 | 85 / 40 | Weaponcrafting 8 | 4 Iron Ingot, 2 Silver Ingot, 2 Gold Ingot, 24 Screw |
| 50 | The Rising | 73 | 105 / 50 | Weaponcrafting 10 (crafting is capped at Lv 8 at launch, so not craftable yet) | 5 Bronze Ingot, 5 Gold Ingot, 6 Diamond, 30 Screw |
Attack values are from mscw-guidebook's weapon list. Planet-helper says the ores drop from Horny Mushrooms, Zombie Mushrooms, Fire Boars, and Cold Eyes along the route. Screws are made at Weaponcrafting 1 (1 Bronze Ingot + 1 Iron Ingot gives 10). You learn Weaponcrafting from Mr. Thunder in Perion through a quest chain at Lv 10, 15, and 25.
No open shop sells the Blue Axe. NiaMeowDB's NPC shop list (launch prices) shows River's Perion Weapon Store stopping at Lv 25 weapons: Mithril Axe (13,500 mesos), Two-Handed Axe (16,500 mesos), Eloon (13,500 mesos) and Broadsword (16,500 mesos). Lv 30 shop weapons appear only under Neri the Fairy or Scott, which NiaMeowDB marks "Not open in this release." So at launch the Lv 30 Blue Axe isn't sold by any open NPC. Get it from drops or the Free Market, or keep your Lv 25 shop weapon until your Lv 35 craft. The MapleClassic Wiki item page (last edited Sep 4) records no shop or drop source yet.
Lv 55–70: planet-helper says there's nothing to craft, so keep The Rising. The Shining (Lv 60) and Chrono (Lv 70) appear only in old drop tables (Taurospear, Jr. Balrog). They're unconfirmed for Classic. For scroll choices, see our scrolling guide.
Spend AP and hit your targets
Put DEX only up to your weapon's requirement and everything else into STR (planet-helper). Mscw-guidebook says warriors start with 10 accuracy and gain 0.8 per level, and maxed Precise Strikes adds 20.
Planet-helper's accuracy checkpoints, with DEX equal to your level and Precise Strikes at 15:
| Monster | Accuracy for 100% | When you reach it |
|---|---|---|
| Cold Eye | 79 | Lv 39 (80) |
| Zombie Lupin | 89 | Lv 46 (89) |
| Wraith | 98 | Lv 53 (98) |
| Wild Kargo | 110 | Lv 62 (110) |
| Tauromacis | 124 | Lv 73 (90% at 70) |
Train from 30 to 70
| Level | Map | Main monster | Notes (planet-helper) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30–33 | Ant Tunnel I | Horny Mushroom, Zombie Mushroom | Continue from first job. Horny Mushrooms drop Two-handed Axe Attack Scroll: Greater |
| 33–35 | The Land of Wild Boar II | Wild Boar | One hit at Lv 30 |
| 35–39 | The Burnt Land II | Fire Boar | Drops Iron and Diamond ore |
| 39–50 | Another Path | Cold Eye | 100% hit rate at Lv 39 |
| 46–50 | Monkey Swamp III | Zombie Lupin | Mix with Cold Eyes |
| 50–55 | Drake Hunting Ground | Drake | 3–4 hits at 80 attack |
| 55–62 | Line 2 | Wraith, Jr. Wraith | Holy-weak, a good spot to bring a Cleric |
| 62–70 | Wild Kargo's Area | Wild Kargo | 100% hit rate from Lv 62 |
Planet-helper estimates about 38,000 Wild Kargo kills from 65 to 70. Its EXP figures from Lv 50 up use the old formula and are unconfirmed. Once Forgotten Hollow opens, it adds Glowshrooms and Raffles at Forgotten Entrance III from Lv 40, and The End of Fleeting Light and Forbidden Entrance from 45–50. Every job's spots are in our training guide.
Play your party and boss role
- Keep Rage and Booster up. Both last 5 minutes at max (mscw-guidebook).
- Rush in to group monsters, use Power Strike on single targets, and Slash Blast when they cluster.
- Warriors have no elemental attacks in second job, so planet-helper's party table pairs you with element users: Cleric for Wraiths and Zombie Lupins, I/L for Fire Boars and Lorangs, F/P for Cold Eyes.
- In KPQ, you're the one standing at King Slime. See our KPQ guide. For later bosses, see our bosses guide. Mscw-guidebook's Slow test shows warriors can't hit Jr. Balrog until a Magician slows it.
Example: On Line 2 with a Cleric and two attackers, your Rage adds +40 attack power for all four of you. Planet-helper lists the party EXP bonus as +30% with 4 or more players.
Return to Fighter after a break
- Coming back from old GMS? Planet-helper and mscw-guidebook both list Final Attack at 25% for 200%, which isn't the old 50% for 140%. Crafting is now the main way to get weapons. Third job isn't in Founder's Access (Nexon's notes).
- Back from a closed test? Recheck the Final Attack behavior, and leave Forgotten Hollow maps out of your plan until they open.
Plan a boosted or alt Fighter
- Powerleveled Fighter: check that its SP are all in one weapon line. If they're split between axe and sword, that's the mistake planet-helper warns about. A powerleveling service changes your level, not your build.
- Alt: a Fighter pairs well with a Cleric or a Wizard. See our world-first party plan. Ores and Screws you farm on one character can be traded to another for crafting.

What may change at Grand Launch
This guide describes the Founder's Access build as it was on October 13, 2026. Re-check these against Nexon's Grand Launch notes on October 21: whether crafting still stops at craft level 8, whether Forgotten Hollow, Orbis and third jobs stay closed, KPQ channel limits, NPC shop stock, and any Founder's Access-only events or packages mentioned here. Nothing here assumes a closed area or feature will open.
FAQ
Should a Fighter use an axe or a sword in MapleStory Classic? Use an axe for now. Planet-helper says the axe line can be crafted from 35 to 50 and the sword line can't. Mscw-guidebook notes the sword can kill in fewer hits on some monsters and gives +20 accuracy.
What's the Fighter skill build? Rush 1, Mastery 5, Booster 1, Final Attack 1, then Mastery 20, Rage 30, Final Attack 30, Booster 20, Rush 20. That's 120 of 121 SP (planet-helper). Mscw-guidebook uses the same totals.
Is Final Attack a toggle or cast manually? Cast manually. The launch tooltip says your attack skills have a 25% chance to enable Final Attack for 60 seconds, and you then use it yourself (NiaMeowDB). Planet-helper's toggle description comes from the test build.
Is Rage worth it solo? It adds about 9–20% damage depending on level, but you take more damage too (mscw-guidebook). Rage is strongest in a party.
Where should a Fighter train from 30 to 70? Ant Tunnel I, Wild Boar II, The Burnt Land II, Another Path (with Monkey Swamp III), Drake Hunting Ground, Line 2, then Wild Kargo's Area.
How much DEX does a Fighter need? Only your weapon's requirement: 35 at Lv 35, 40 at 40, 50 at 50. Precise Strikes covers most of your accuracy.
What weapon should a Fighter use from 55 to 70? Keep The Rising. Planet-helper says no Lv 55–70 warrior weapon can be crafted, and the drop sources for higher weapons are unconfirmed.
