Stumpy is the level 35 field boss that Grand Launch added to Perion's Rocky Mountains. This MapleStory Classic Stumpy guide covers where it spawns, how to reach the hidden Parched Land portal, the eight-step Old Tree quest chain that sends you after it, its stats and respawn, what it drops, and how each class should fight it.
Quick summary
- Stumpy is a level 35 boss with 19,220 HP and 276 EXP. It's weak to Fire and resists Lightning (MapleClassic Wiki, henesys.gg).
- It spawns alone on Parched Land, behind a hidden portal at the far left of East Rocky Mountain V, seven maps east of Perion (MS-Classic, wiki).
- The base respawn is 1 hour (3,600 seconds). Nexon made field boss timers more random at Grand Launch, so treat the hour as a floor, not a schedule (MS-Classic, wiki).
- Stumpy is the last target of "The Old Tree", an 8-step chain from Winston that needs level 34 and ends with a Gloves Crit. Rate Scroll: Chaos (maplestory.quest, wiki).
- Drops: NiaMeowDB's item pages list Stumpy as a source of Earring DEX, LUK and STR Intermediate scrolls. No source publishes confirmed drop rates yet.
Know Stumpy before you go
Stumpy was missing from Founder's Access. Nexon's Grand Launch release notes list six challenge bosses: Mano, Stumpy, Mushmom, Shade, Zombie Mushmom and Jr. Balrog. Stumpy is the newcomer. That's why older boss guides, including ones that rank well, don't list it. Our bosses guide compares all six, and our Mano guide covers the boss one tier below.
| Stat | Value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Level | 35 | Monster-level accuracy penalty starts below 35 |
| HP | 19,220 | About 2.6x Mano's 7,420, but less than Mushmom's 34,440 |
| MP | 150 | Limits how long MP-hungry skills can run on it |
| EXP | 276 | Not an EXP target; the quest pays far more |
| Weapon / Magic ATK | 477 / 524 | Hits hard for a level 35 player |
| Weapon / Magic DEF | 20 / 10 | henesys.gg lists 17% weapon and 9% magic damage reduction |
| Accuracy / Avoid | 114 / 24 | Low avoid; accuracy needs are moderate |
| Knockback | 2,500 damage | You won't flinch it with small hits |
| Weak to | Fire | Fire Arrow and Fire/Poison builds gain the most |
| Resists | Lightning | Ice/Lightning Wizards should lean on Cold Beam |
MS-Classic reads the game data as giving Stumpy two attacks (one is a jump attack), a Heal skill it can use every 30 seconds, and 192 HP of natural regeneration. The data also lists two self-buffs it doesn't name. Community sources say one attack is ranged and one buff raises its defense. We list those as unconfirmed.
Walk the route to Parched Land
There's no cab to Parched Land. The route from Perion is seven portals (MS-Classic, from the client map data). Our Perion guide covers the town you start from, and our Rocky Mountain guide covers every map on the way.
| Step | Map | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Perion | Leave by the right side |
| 2 | Perion Street Corner | Keep right |
| 3 | East Rocky Mountain I | Keep right |
| 4 | East Rocky Mountain II | Winston's camp is here. Start the chain first |
| 5 | East Rocky Mountain III | Keep right |
| 6 | East Rocky Mountain IV | Keep right |
| 7 | East Rocky Mountain V | Go to the far left of the map |
| 8 | Parched Land | Hidden portal: stand on the spot and press Up |
Hidden portals don't show on screen. If pressing Up does nothing, walk a few steps along the left edge and try again.
Parched Land is a small map. The wiki lists its full spawn table:
| Monster | Level | HP | EXP | Spawns | Respawn |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Axe Stump | 17 | 371 | 32 | 5 | Normal |
| Dark Axe Stump | 23 | 547 | 43 | 2 | Normal |
| Jr. Boogie (two variants) | 35 | 1,395 | 69 | 2 | Normal |
| Stumpy | 35 | 19,220 | 276 | 1 | 3,600 s |
Nine regular spawns isn't much to grind while you wait. Jr. Boogies are on Stumpy's level, so a level 30 character will feel them. The map returns you to Perion.
Example: a level 36 Fighter comes from Perion with 150 Orange Potions. He walks right to East Rocky Mountain II, picks up Winston's quests, then carries on to East Rocky Mountain V. Stumpy isn't up on channel 7, so he clears the Axe Stumps for the Very Dry Branch quest (if they drop it on his server) and checks channels 8 and 9 between waves.
Do The Old Tree quest chain first
Stumpy is the target of Monstrous Tree Stumpy, the eighth and last step of The Old Tree, a chain added with Grand Launch. Every step needs level 34. Doctor Winston, an archaeologist camping in East Rocky Mountain II, sends you around Perion asking about a rumour, then to Ellinia, then back to him (maplestory.quest, wiki).
| Step | Quest | Talk to / do | Where | Reward (client data) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Truth of the Rumor | Winston | East Rocky Mountain II | 2,755 EXP, 757 mesos |
| 2 | Truth of the Rumor-Blackbull | Blackbull | Perion | 2,755 EXP, 757 mesos |
| 3 | Truth of the Rumor-Manji | Ayan | Perion | 2,755 EXP, 757 mesos |
| 4 | Truth of the Rumor- Dances with Balrog | Manji | Perion | 2,755 EXP, 757 mesos |
| 5 | Truth of the Rumor-Betty | Dances with Balrog | Warriors' Sanctuary (Perion) | 2,755 EXP, 757 mesos |
| 6 | A Report for the Doctor | Betty | Ellinia | 3,937 EXP, 1,082 mesos, 20 Orange Potions |
| 7 | Stump Research | Winston; bring 100 Very Dry Branch | East Rocky Mountain II | 3,937 EXP, 1,082 mesos, 20 Blue Potions |
| 8 | Monstrous Tree Stumpy | Defeat Stumpy, return to Winston | Parched Land, then East Rocky Mountain II | 3,937 EXP, 1,082 mesos, 5 Fame, Gloves Crit. Rate Scroll: Chaos |
Each step also gives Contribution, which feeds Citizenship (maplestory.quest).
1. Do the Perion talk loop in one trip
Steps 1 to 5 are dialogue only. Talk to Winston, walk three maps back to Perion, then talk to Blackbull, Ayan, and Manji in town, and Dances with Balrog in Warriors' Sanctuary. Don't leave Perion between them.
2. Walk or cab to Betty in Ellinia
maplestory.quest maps the walk from Warriors' Sanctuary to Ellinia in 11 portals: Perion, Perion Street Corner, East Rocky Mountain I, Rocky Road I–III, East Domain of Perion, The Forest North of Ellinia, The Tree That Grew I, The Field Up North of Ellinia, then Ellinia. A Regular Cab is quicker if you'd rather pay the fare. Betty's step gives 20 Orange Potions, which are useful for the fight later.
3. Collect 100 Very Dry Branches
Back at Winston, Stump Research asks for 100 Very Dry Branches. Neither the wiki nor maplestory.quest lists a drop source in the client data. MS-Classic reports community claims that the stumps around Perion drop them, and labels that unverified. The quest text gives a hint: Winston says Dark Axe Stumps wither more readily than normal Stumps (NiaMeowDB quest page). The branch is untradeable and stacks to 100, so you can't buy them. Try the Axe Stumps and Dark Axe Stumps on the Rocky Mountain maps and Parched Land first. If nothing drops after a few dozen kills, check the wiki's item page again, since it updates as players report drops.
4. Kill Stumpy and hand in
Monstrous Tree Stumpy needs one Stumpy kill. The quest gives credit for the kill, so if you're in a party, make sure you're in the party that gets it. Return to Winston for the Chaos gloves scroll.
Totals checked: the per-step client values above add up to 25,586 EXP and 7,031 mesos (5 × 2,755 + 3 × 3,937 EXP), which matches MS-Classic's total. MS-Classic puts that at about 16% of a level at 34.
Check you're ready: accuracy, HP, and damage
No source publishes a recommended level or party size for Stumpy. You can plan with these numbers:
| Check | Target | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Accuracy at level 35 | 79 to never miss | Community accuracy table, via MS-Classic |
| Accuracy at level 30 | 95 | Same |
| Accuracy at level 25 | 110 | Same |
| Quest level | 34 | Client data |
| Self-heal | Heal skill every 30 s, plus 192 HP regen | Client data, via MS-Classic |
Our accuracy guide explains how the level gap changes these numbers.
Plan your damage before you go. A slow kill gives Stumpy more Heal casts. Use this table as a planning aid. It divides HP by your average hit and doesn't count misses, crits or heals:
| Your average hit on Stumpy | Hits to kill (no heals) | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 150 | ~129 | Long fight; bring a party |
| 300 | ~65 | Doable solo with plenty of potions |
| 500 | ~39 | Comfortable solo |
| 800+ | ~25 or fewer | Fast; heals barely matter |
Your average hit on Stumpy is lower than your hit on a training monster, because of its defense (henesys.gg lists 17% weapon and 9% magic damage reduction).
Pick a plan for your class
MS-Classic's class notes come from the stat sheet, not kill logs. Here's our version with the reasoning:
| Class | Approach | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Fire/Poison Wizard | Fire Arrow. Stumpy is fire-weak, so this is your boss | MP; Stumpy is too slow to chase you, so kite |
| Ice/Lightning Wizard | Cold Beam. Skip Thunder Bolt, which it resists | MP and the jump attack |
| Cleric | No Holy weakness here, so it's an average fight | Bring a damage dealer if you can |
| Fighter, Page, Spearman | Stay on it so the Heal doesn't undo your damage | Touch damage and the jump attack |
| Hunter, Crossbowman | Fight from range and keep moving | The reported ranged attack |
| Assassin | Range and stars; Lucky Seven from a distance | Star supply |
| Bandit | Savage Blow up close | Touch damage; carry plenty of HP potions |
Our elements guide covers every weakness and resistance in the game.
Choose solo or party
| Option | Best for | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo | Level 35+ with ~79 accuracy | Quest credit is yours; no splitting | Long fights if damage is low; heals add up |
| Duo | Two players doing the chain together | Faster kill; both can hand in if both are in the party | Only one Stumpy per channel |
| Full party | Low-level or low-damage characters | Safer, quickest | Only one spawn, so the party has to agree on credit and drops |
Example: two friends, a level 34 Ice/Lightning Wizard and a level 35 Hunter, finish steps 1 to 7 together. They party up, use Cold Beam and arrows from range, and both get Monstrous Tree Stumpy credit from the same kill.
Plan a channel-camping loop
Parched Land has one spawn per channel. The base timer is 3,600 seconds in the client, and Nexon's launch maintenance notice said field boss respawns were "adjusted to be more randomized". NiaMeowDB's monster page reports live respawns of 60 to 120 minutes and says that isn't guaranteed. Community reports put other field bosses, such as Mushmom, closer to 90 minutes live, but that's unconfirmed.
- Kill Stumpy and note the channel and the time.
- Change channels and check Parched Land on each one. Windia has had 40 channels since launch (Nexon), so there are plenty to check.
- Don't come back to a channel you killed on for at least an hour.
- While you wait, clear the small stumps for branches.
No source has published a live respawn log for Stumpy yet.
Know what Stumpy drops (so far)
No source has a confirmed drop table with rates. The wiki and henesys.gg list no drops. NiaMeowDB's item pages name Stumpy as a source of three earring scrolls: Earring DEX, LUK and STR Scroll: Intermediate (60% success, +2 to the stat). Our earrings guide shows where they fit. MS-Classic reports a player-voted community list with a few sightings each: Elixir, Stumpy Figure, crafting catalysts, and a One-Handed Blunt Weapon Attack Scroll: Intermediate. Treat those as early reports.
The sure reward is the quest's Gloves Crit. Rate Scroll: Chaos and 5 Fame. NiaMeowDB's Stumpy page also shows older reference tables (Tree Branch, Leaf, potions, cape and weapon scrolls) and labels them unconfirmed for Classic.
If you're returning, boosted, or on an alt
- Returning players: Stumpy was a Perion-area boss in the original game too, but use Classic World's 1.0.0 numbers, not old guides' HP or EXP.
- Powerleveled or boosted characters: you'll reach 34 without having walked the Rocky Mountain maps. Do the talk loop anyway. It's quick EXP, and step 6 is the Ellinia trip.
- Alts: the chain isn't repeatable on a character, but each character can do it once. An alt at 34 gets the same 25,586 EXP and the Chaos gloves scroll.

What changed at Grand Launch for Stumpy
Stumpy is itself a Grand Launch addition, so everything on this page is v1.0.0 content. The launch changes that touch the fight:
- Stumpy joined the boss list in v1.0.0, with Doctor Winston's Truth of the Rumor chain leading to it (henesys.gg).
- Field boss respawns are more random than the 1-hour client timer (Nexon).
- Windia has 40 channels, so more Parched Land spawns exist at once.
- Potion drops rose for monsters level 10 to 30, which covers the Axe Stumps and Dark Axe Stumps on the way.
- Warrior and Bowman buffs: Iron Body (+20–40% Weapon DEF), the Warrior HP Recovery passive (+20–50%) and Final Attack's 60-second window all help in a long boss fight (Nexon).
Our patch notes tracker logs any later change to Stumpy, and our roadmap covers the next bosses Nexon has announced. The MapleStory Classic hub collects every guide for the game.
