MapleStory Classic Crafting Guide: All 6 Crafts, Levels, Best Picks
MapleStory Classic crafting guide: unlock all six crafts at Lv 10, the craft EXP and level-gate table, which two crafts fit your job, costs, catalysts.

In this guide 11 sections
Quick summary
- Crafting opens at character Lv 10. There are six crafts: Smithing and Weaponcrafting in Perion, Tailoring in Ellinia, Woodcrafting in Henesys, Leatherworking in Kerning City, and Arcforge in Sleepywood. Each one starts with a quick test from its master (planet-helper, Henesys.gg).
- Each craft levels separately. To gain craft EXP, your character level has to be at least 5 times your craft level. Below that, the bar stops at 100% and the extra EXP is lost (planet-helper, wiki).
- Learn Smithing early. Most recipes use ingots, and Mr. Thunder won't teach Weaponcrafting until you've finished Smithing's starter quest (meowdb, wiki).
- The sources disagree on the cap. Meowdb says crafting stops at Lv 8 at launch. Planet-helper and Henesys.gg list recipes up to Lv 10. That matters for gear like The Rising and the Cromi, which need craft Lv 10.
- Pick crafts by what your job wears. A Warrior wants Smithing and Weaponcrafting, a Magician wants Tailoring and Arcforge, a Bowman wants Woodcrafting and Leatherworking, and a Thief wants Weaponcrafting and Leatherworking (planet-helper).
Checked against the Founder's Access build on October 13, 2026. Grand Launch is October 21, 2026; see the end of the guide for what may change.
Unlock each craft at level 10
| Craft | Town · master | Starter test (planet-helper) | Makes (Henesys.gg) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smithing | Perion · Silas Irons | Defeat 20 Stumps and 20 Dark Stumps, bring 5 Bronze Ore | Ingots; warrior helmets, gloves, shoes, shields |
| Weaponcrafting | Perion · Mr. Thunder | 1 Bronze Ingot + 1 Iron Ingot (you smelt them yourself) | Swords, axes, blunt weapons, polearms, daggers, claws, Screws |
| Tailoring | Ellinia · Francois | 30 Dark Stumps, 20 Leaves | Cloth and thread, hats, magician gloves and shoes, jeans, capes |
| Woodcrafting | Henesys · Vicious | 30 Stumps, 20 Tree Branches | Processed Wood, bows, crossbows, arrows, some wands and staffs, chairs |
| Leatherworking | Kerning City · JM From tha Streetz | 30 Pigs, 5 Leather | Leather, thief and bowman gloves and shoes, hats, a chair |
| Arcforge | Sleepywood · Chrishrama | 30 Dark Stumps, 1 Garnet Ore | Gems, Processed Parchment, wands, staffs, Lesser equipment scrolls |
Meowdb notes that Mr. Thunder "only takes you under his wing after Silas Irons has." His test asks for ingots, and only Smithing can smelt them. Chrishrama is the only master outside the four job towns, so you can unlock Arcforge only after you reach Sleepywood. The MapleClassic Wiki still lists the Leatherworking and Arcforge masters as unconfirmed. We use the launch-data names from planet-helper and Henesys.gg.
Example: You're a Lv 10 Thief headed to Kerning City. Do Leatherworking's Pig test there. Stop in Perion for Smithing, then Weaponcrafting, before you need a crafted claw.
Learn the EXP table and the level gate
| Craft Lv | EXP to next | Total EXP | Character Lv needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 50 | 0 | 10 |
| 2 | 115 | 50 | 10 |
| 3 | 199 | 165 | 15 |
| 4 | 308 | 364 | 20 |
| 5 | 450 | 672 | 25 |
| 6 | 635 | 1,122 | 30 |
| 7 | 875 | 1,757 | 35 |
| 8 | 1,187 | 2,632 | 40 |
| 9 | 1,593 | 3,819 | 45 |
| 10 | — | 5,412 | 50 |
Values are from planet-helper. Henesys.gg's table matches for levels 1–9. All six crafts use the same table.
The gate trap: if your character level is below the requirement, the EXP bar stops at 100% and the overflow is lost. The wiki and planet-helper both say the craft won't level on its own when your character catches up. You need to make one more craft after leveling. Planet-helper labels that last point a player report. Plan crafting sessions just after you level, not before.
Know the follow-up quests, Kits, and catalysts
| Stage | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Character Lv 15, craft Lv 2 | A delivery quest that gives the craft's Kit | meowdb, planet-helper |
| Character Lv 25, craft Lv 5 | Craft one specific item; reward is the craft's first Catalyst | meowdb, planet-helper |
| Quest EXP | 171, 705, and 2,587 for the three quests | planet-helper |
Henesys.gg describes the Kit quest differently: a weekly quest from your master at craft Lv 2, and the six masters share one weekly slot. A Kit gives +10% craft EXP for 15 minutes. Check your quest log.
Catalysts are optional. Henesys.gg says adding one to a recipe can change the crafted item's bonus stats, or turn a Lesser scroll into an Intermediate, Greater, or Chaos scroll. Meowdb lists the catalyst each Lv 25 quest gives, such as the Armor Crafting Catalyst for Smithing and the One-Handed Weapon Crafting Catalyst for Weaponcrafting. Chaos crafting is covered in our scrolling guide.
Pick two crafts for your job
| Job | Main crafts (planet-helper) | Example gear | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Smithing + Weaponcrafting | Niam (WC 7), Sabretooth (WC 8), The Rising (WC 10) | planet-helper, Henesys.gg |
| Magician | Tailoring + Arcforge (+ Woodcrafting for the Hardwood Wand) | Wizard Wand (Arcforge 7), Fairy Wand (8), Cromi (10), Hardwood Wand (Woodcrafting 3) | Henesys.gg |
| Bowman | Woodcrafting + Leatherworking | Battle Bow (WD 5), Eagle Crow (6), Red Viper (7) | Henesys.gg |
| Thief | Weaponcrafting + Leatherworking | Steel Igor (WC 4), Steel Guards (6), Steel Avarice (8) | Henesys.gg |
Planet-helper doesn't yet know whether one character can learn all six crafts. The wiki says "a single character can level all six." Until that's confirmed, start with the two your job needs. Our Fighter guide and Ice/Lightning guide show where crafted weapons fit in a leveling route.
Start with Smithing: the dependency map
| Material | Made by | Used by |
|---|---|---|
| Ingots (Bronze, Iron, Mithril, Adamantium, Gold, Silver, Orihalcon) | Smithing: 5 ore gives 1 ingot, 100–500 mesos | Weaponcrafting, Arcforge, Leatherworking, Tailoring shoes, Woodcrafting bows |
| Screws | Weaponcrafting: 1 Bronze + 1 Iron Ingot gives 10. At WC 5, 10 Iron Hog's Metal Hooves give 3 | Almost every gear recipe |
| Processed Wood | Woodcrafting: 10 Tree Branches, or 5 Firewood at Lv 2 | Weapons, bows, wands |
| Processed Leather | Leatherworking: 5 Leather, or Jr. Necki, Ligator, or Croco skins at higher levels | Gloves, shoes, claws |
| Processed Cloth / Spool of Thread | Tailoring: Leaves or Animal Fur Bundles | Hats, robes, shoes |
| Gems | Arcforge: 1 gem ore each (Garnet at Lv 1 through Diamond and Black Crystal at Lv 6) | Gear upgrades, scrolls |
Values are from Henesys.gg's recipe list. The wiki calls Weaponcrafting "the heaviest consumer of Smithing ingots in the game." It warns that skipping Smithing means "spend[ing] most of their training mesos buying ingots from other crafters." The wiki counts 68 Smithing recipes, 45 Weaponcrafting, 59 Tailoring, 43 Woodcrafting, 89 Leatherworking, and 44 Arcforge, which adds up to the same 348 the launch data shows.
Budget your mesos
Planet-helper calculates the net meso cost of taking each craft from 1 to 10. That's the fee, plus shop materials and the sell value of materials used, minus the sell value of what you make.
| Craft | Fewest materials | Fewest mesos |
|---|---|---|
| Smithing | Net −438,490 | Net −38,220 |
| Weaponcrafting | Net −54,800 | Net −54,800 |
| Tailoring | Net −193,028 | Net −69,970 |
| Woodcrafting | Net −89,565 | Profit +108,510 |
| Leatherworking | Net −73,293 | Net −46,320 |
| Arcforge | Net −72,800 | Profit +19,760 |
Planet-helper says only Woodcrafting and Arcforge leave you ahead if you sell what you make. For Tailoring, Woodcrafting, and Leatherworking, most of the work is farming one material: Animal Fur Bundles, Firewood, and Leather. Our mesos guide covers funding these.
Compare crafting with buying
| Option | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Level your own crafts | You keep the gear and the profit crafts (Woodcrafting, Arcforge) | Character-level gate; material farming |
| Buy from other players | Fast | Prices and supply vary; our sources don't track them |
| Use quest and drop gear | No craft EXP needed | Some weapons have no drop source (Hardwood Wand, per planet-helper's I/L guide) |
Plan crafting for returning, boosted, and alt characters
- Returning from old GMS? Classic World crafting runs through six town masters, each with its own 1–10 track (planet-helper). Start with Smithing.
- Powerleveled character: a boost raises your character level, which lifts the gate, but it doesn't add craft EXP. A Lv 50 with no crafts still starts each craft at Lv 1. A powerleveling service changes the gate, not your craft levels.
- Alts: an alt can farm ores, Leather, and Tree Branches for your main's crafting. Planet-helper lists the starter quests as character-level quests, so each new character takes its own Lv 10 test. See our world-first party plan and our quests guide for the starter-quest timing.
Want a hand with this?
If you would rather skip the grind that goes with this, MapleStory Classic powerleveling services are listed on FullBoosts. Read Nexon's Terms of Service before you buy any service from anyone, FullBoosts included — a marketplace listing isn't publisher permission.
What may change at Grand Launch
This guide describes the Founder's Access build as it was on October 13, 2026. Re-check these against Nexon's Grand Launch notes on October 21: whether crafting still stops at craft level 8, whether Forgotten Hollow, Orbis and third jobs stay closed, KPQ channel limits, NPC shop stock, and any Founder's Access-only events or packages mentioned here. Nothing here assumes a closed area or feature will open.
FAQ
What level does crafting unlock in MapleStory Classic? Character Lv 10, through a starter quest from each craft's master (Nexon, planet-helper).
Which craft should I learn first? Smithing. It makes the ingots most other crafts need, and you need it before you can learn Weaponcrafting (meowdb, wiki).
Why did my crafting EXP stop at 100%? Your character level is below 5 times your craft level. Level up, then make one more craft to move to the next craft level (planet-helper, wiki).
What's the max crafting level? Planet-helper and Henesys.gg list Lv 10. Meowdb says crafting stops at Lv 8 at launch. Check your craft window.
Which crafts make money? Planet-helper's model shows only Woodcrafting (about +108,510) and Arcforge (about +19,760) ending in profit on the fewest-mesos route.
What do catalysts do? They can change a crafted item's bonus stats, or upgrade a crafted Lesser scroll to Intermediate, Greater, or Chaos (Henesys.gg).
Can one character learn all six crafts? The wiki says yes. Planet-helper lists it as unconfirmed.
