Axes are the Fighter's crafted weapon line and the most common pick for a damage-focused Warrior. MapleStory Classic World has 11 one-handed and 10 two-handed axes, from the Hand Axe that Silver sells for 50 mesos to the level 70 Mikhail and Chrono. This MapleStory Classic axe guide lists all 21 with attack, speed, STR and DEX needs, price and source. It covers the launch shops, the five axe recipes, axe vs sword math on the full damage formula, scrolls and an upgrade path.
Quick summary
- 21 axes: 11 one-handed and 10 two-handed, all with 7 upgrade slots. Most are Fast (4) or (5). The Pickaxe, The Rising and Chrono are Normal (6) (MapleStory Quest, Public Release client).
- River in Perion sells five axes at launch, from the Battle Axe and Metal Axe at 5,000 mesos to the Two-Handed Axe at 16,500. Silver in Lith Harbor sells the two cheapest one-handed axes (NiaMeowDB launch prices).
- Weaponcrafting makes five axes: Scythe (2), Pickaxe (4), Niam (7) and Sabretooth (8) at launch. The Rising needs craft 10, past the launch cap of 8 (MapleStory Quest).
- A two-handed axe beats a two-handed sword by about 3% per hit on the full damage formula, and a one-handed axe by 21–27% (our math on henesys.gg's multipliers).
- El Moth sells One-Handed Axe Lessers for 30,000 mesos and Two-handed Axe Lessers for 60,000, for a guaranteed +1 attack each (NiaMeowDB; MapleStory Quest).

Axe crafting recipes (Weaponcrafting)
| Axe | Weaponcrafting | Character level | Ingredients | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scythe | 2 | 15 | 2 Iron Ingots, 2 Processed Wood, 6 Screws | 2,500 |
| Pickaxe | 4 | 20 | 4 Iron Ingots, 2 Processed Wood, 12 Screws | 4,500 |
| Niam | 7 | 35 | 4 Iron Ingots, 3 Emeralds, 21 Screws | 9,000 |
| Sabretooth | 8 | 40 | 4 Iron Ingots, 2 Silver Ingots, 2 Gold Ingots, 24 Screws | 11,500 |
| The Rising | 10 (not at launch) | 50 | 5 Bronze Ingots, 5 Gold Ingots, 6 Diamonds, 30 Screws | 16,500 |
Recipes come from MapleStory Quest, and each fee equals the axe's NPC sell price. Its crafting ladder says the Public Release's crafting stops at 8, so of the three crafted two-handed axes, only the Niam and Sabretooth can be made at launch (henesys.gg). See our Weaponcrafting guide.
Our math on inputs: ingots take 5 ore each, Arcforge gems take 1 ore each, and one Screw craft makes 10 Screws (our Weaponcrafting guide and Arcforge guide). A Niam takes 20 Iron Ore, 3 Emerald Ore and 3 Screw crafts. A Sabretooth takes 20 Iron, 10 Silver and 10 Gold Ore, plus 3 Screw crafts.
Example: a level 33 Fighter with Weaponcrafting 6 wants a Niam at 35. They need Weaponcrafting 7 and character level 35 for the recipe, 4 Iron Ingots from 20 Iron Ore, 3 Emeralds refined by an Arcforger (theirs or a friend's), and 21 Screws. Starting the Screw and ingot crafts two levels early means the Niam is ready the moment they ding 35, instead of a trip to the Free Market for a Blue Axe that no shop sells.
Axe vs sword: which is better for a Fighter?
Henesys.gg's multipliers (our damage formula guide):
| Weapon | Swing | Stab | 60/40 average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two-handed axe | 3.0 | 2.0 | 2.60 |
| Two-handed sword | 2.5 | 2.5 | 2.50 |
| One-handed axe | 2.4 | 1.2 | 1.92 |
| One-handed sword | 1.8 | 1.8 | 1.80 |
The formula is max = skill % × weapon attack × (1 + (STR × multiplier + DEX + 2 × attack power) ÷ 100). NiaMeowDB's speed ladder gives 83 attacks a minute at Fast (4), 80 at Fast (5) and 74 at Normal (6) (our attack speed guide).
Our math (max damage × attacks a minute, typical Warrior stats, no attack power):
| Level | Stats | Two-handed axe | Two-handed sword | Axe lead | One-handed axe | 2H lead |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | 125 STR, 30 DEX | Blue Axe: 18,200 | Aluminum Baseball Bat: 17,700 | +2.8% | Fireman's Axe: 14,434 | +26.1% |
| 35 | 150 STR, 35 DEX | Niam: 23,100 | Lionheart: 22,440 | +2.9% | Dankke: 18,612 | +24.1% |
| 40 | 170 STR, 40 DEX | Sabretooth: 27,936 | Zard: 27,120 | +3.0% | Blue Counter: 22,065 | +26.6% |
| 50 | 220 STR, 50 DEX | The Rising: 39,002 | Lion's Fang: 37,814 | +3.1% | Buck: 32,054 | +21.7% |
| 60 | 260 STR, 60 DEX | The Shining: 53,504 | Sparta: 49,750 | +7.5% | Hawkhead: 42,129 | +27.0% |
| 70 | 300 STR, 70 DEX | Chrono: 65,379 | Doombringer: 63,314 | +3.3% | Mikhail: 53,869 | +21.4% |
That's average damage. Mscw-guidebook adds a caveat our Fighter guide covers: a sword's even multiplier can kill some monsters in fewer hits (2 hits every time on Ligators vs 2.15 on average with an axe). Sword Mastery also gives +20 accuracy (NiaMeowDB). One-handed axes beat one-handed swords (1.92 vs 1.80) and still leave room for a shield. See our swords guide for the sword side.
Our pick: a two-handed axe from 30, with the crafted Niam at 35 and Sabretooth at 40. Our Fighter guide covers the skill build.
Axe attack scrolls
| Scroll | Success | Effect | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Axe Attack Scroll: Lesser | 100% | +1 attack | None |
| Intermediate | 60% | +2 | None |
| Greater | 10% | +4 | None |
| Chaos | 10% | +5 | 50% chance to destroy the axe when it fails |
Odds come from MapleStory Quest. El Moth sells One-Handed Axe Lessers for 30,000 mesos and Two-handed Axe Lessers for 60,000 (NiaMeowDB). The Two-handed Axe Attack Scroll: Greater is a pick reward from Building a New House for Blackbull and Taking Out the Alligators 1 (henesys.gg); Horny Mushrooms list it only among their old MapleSEA reference drops (NiaMeowDB). Our math: seven Lessers add +7 attack for 420,000 mesos on a two-handed axe. On a Sabretooth, 67 attack instead of 60 is about 12% more damage. Our scrolling guide covers the tiers.
Axe upgrade path by level
| Level | Two-handed path | One-handed path | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | Metal Axe | Double Axe | River, Manny / Silver |
| 15 | Metal Axe | Battle Axe or Scythe | River / Weaponcrafting 2 |
| 20 | Iron Axe or Pickaxe | Battle Axe | River / Weaponcrafting 4 |
| 25 | Two-Handed Axe | Mithril Axe | River |
| 30 | Blue Axe | Fireman's Axe | Drop or trade |
| 35 | Niam | Dankke | Weaponcrafting 7 / drop |
| 40 | Sabretooth | Blue Counter | Weaponcrafting 8 / trade |
| 50+ | The Rising, The Shining, Chrono | Buck, Hawkhead, Mikhail | Drops or later crafting |
Our math on River: the Metal Axe, Iron Axe and Two-Handed Axe cost 35,000 mesos together. Crafting the Pickaxe instead of buying the Iron Axe costs a 4,500 fee plus 20 Iron Ore, and the Pickaxe has 3 more attack but is Normal (6) instead of Fast (5). New Warriors can start with our Warrior guide 1–30.
Axes for alts and returning players
- Returning players: no launch shop sells the level 30 Blue Axe, so trade for one or wait for Niam at 35 (NiaMeowDB).
- Thief alts: the Pickaxe (Warrior and Thief) and the Metal Axe (Warrior, Bowman and Thief) are usable off-job.
- Weaponcrafters: Niam and Sabretooth are good trade goods, since no launch shop sells a level 30+ axe. Spearmen want the polearm line instead (our spears and polearms guide), and Pages use maces and hammers (our blunt weapons guide).
- Rushing a Fighter: a powerleveling run won't level Weaponcrafting, and check that your SP is in one weapon line.

What changed for axes at Grand Launch
Grand Launch (v1.0.0, October 21, 2026) didn't change any axe's stats or recipe. Crafting still stops at craft level 8, so The Rising stays out of reach, and the axe recipes kept their fees (henesys.gg; Nexon's Grand Launch release notes). The only recent recipe price change, nine Lesser cape, earring and glove scrolls going from 10,000 to 20,000 mesos, came at Founder's Access on October 6, not at Grand Launch (henesys.gg), and it doesn't touch axes. The change axe users will notice is Final Attack: every Final Attack, including Axe, now lasts 60 seconds instead of 30, so you recast it half as often.
FAQ
Is an axe or sword better for a Fighter? An axe, by about 3% average damage on the full formula by our math. Swords kill some monsters in fewer hits and Sword Mastery adds accuracy (henesys.gg; mscw-guidebook).
What is the best axe at launch? The Sabretooth: level 40, +60 attack, Fast (5), made at Weaponcrafting 8 (MapleStory Quest).
Where do I buy axes? River in Perion sells the Battle Axe, Mithril Axe, Metal Axe, Iron Axe and Two-Handed Axe. Silver in Lith Harbor sells the Hand Axe and Double Axe (NiaMeowDB).
Can you craft The Rising at launch? No. It needs Weaponcrafting 10, and the Public Release stops at 8 (MapleStory Quest).
Is a one-handed or two-handed axe better? Two-handed, by about 21–27% by our math. A one-handed axe lets you use a shield and still beats a one-handed sword.
Can non-Warriors use axes? The Hand Axe, Double Axe and Scythe have no job lock, the Metal Axe works for Warriors, Bowmen and Thieves, and the Pickaxe for Warriors and Thieves (MapleStory Quest).
