THE GUIDE

Quick summary

  • Both sources say to start with a polearm. You can craft the Axe Pole Arm (Lv 35), Crescent Polearm (Lv 40), and The Nine Dragons (Lv 50) at Weaponcrafting 7, 8, and 10. No spear has a recipe (planet-helper, mscw-guidebook).
  • Polearms swing for 3.5 and stab for 1.5, and spears are the reverse. At a 60/40 swing-to-stab mix, that averages 2.7 against 2.3, about a 17.4% edge for polearms before weapon stats (mscw-guidebook).
  • Spear Mastery gives a 20% chance to ignore the target's DEF, while Polearm Mastery gives +20 speed. Spear attack scrolls drop at launch, but polearm scrolls have no source yet (planet-helper).
  • Spend your 121 SP on one line: Mastery 20, Final Attack 30, Booster 20, Rush 20, Iron Will 30. That's 120 SP with 1 left over.
  • Hyper Body isn't a second-job skill in Classic. It's a third-job Dragon Knight skill.

Checked against the Founder's Access build on October 13, 2026. Grand Launch is October 21, 2026; see the end of the guide for what may change.

Decide whether Spearman fits you

Mscw-guidebook says to start with a polearm "if you enjoy continuous grinding with few buffs to manage." Spearman weapons have long reach and can't be used with a shield. The job's strengths are rhythm, movement, and sustain.

Factor Spearman Page Fighter Source
Final Attack 1 target, 350%, heals 10% 1 target, 360% Up to 3 targets, 200% planet-helper
Defensive buff Iron Will (+50 DEF, 35% knockback ignore) Threaten (debuffs enemies) — planet-helper
Crafted weapon line Polearm Two-handed blunt Axe planet-helper
Shield No With sword With one-handed weapons mscw-guidebook

Compare our Page guide and Fighter guide.

Build first job

Mscw-guidebook's recommended 61-SP build maxes both attacks and skips Iron Body, because Iron Will gives flat DEF in second job:

Skill SP
Power Strike 20
Slash Blast 20
Precise Strikes 15
Improved HP Recovery 3
Max HP Increase 3
Iron Body 0

Planet-helper uses the same skills in this order: Power Strike, Slash Blast, HP Recovery 3, Max HP 3, then Precise Strikes 15.

Advance to Spearman at Lv 30

The chain is the same four warrior quests as for every second job; our job advancement guide walks through it. Pick Spearman at the end.

Choose spear or polearm

Factor Spear Polearm Source
Swing / stab multiplier 1.5 / 3.5 (avg 2.3) 3.5 / 1.5 (avg 2.7) mscw-guidebook
Mastery bonus 20% chance to ignore DEF +20 speed planet-helper, mscw
Crafted weapons None Lv 35, 40, 50 planet-helper
Attack scrolls at launch Greater (Zombie Mushroom), Intermediate drop None in the data (unconfirmed) planet-helper
Lv 40 option Zeco (59 attack), Green Mushroom drop (Beta 2) Crescent Polearm (65 attack), crafted planet-helper
Level planet-helper mscw-guidebook
30 Polearm +18% Polearm +16.5%
40 Polearm +12% Polearm +14.5%
50 Polearm +30% Polearm +13%
60 Polearm +47% Polearm +7.7%
70 Spear +1% Polearm +10.2%

The two sources get different margins at each level. Neither counts Spear Mastery's DEF ignore, which "narrows the gap against high-defense monsters" (mscw-guidebook). Planet-helper also notes the Lv 60 polearm Skylar drops from Wild Kargos on your route. Both sources agree on polearm from 30 to 60. Mscw-guidebook adds: "Recalculate if you find a spear with better attack or upgrades."

Craft the polearm line

Lv Weapon Attack Recipe (planet-helper unless noted)
25 Janitor's Mop 50 Weaponcrafting 5; 45 STR, 0 DEX (mscw-guidebook)
30 Mithril Pole Arm 55 No open NPC shop at launch (NiaMeowDB): drop or Free Market
35 Axe Pole Arm 60 Weaponcrafting 7: Iron Ingot ×4, Mithril Ingot ×3, Screw ×21
40 Crescent Polearm 65 Weaponcrafting 8: Iron Ingot ×4, Mithril Ingot ×2, Processed Wood ×2, Screw ×24
50 The Nine Dragons 75 Weaponcrafting 10 (crafting is capped at Lv 8 at launch, so not craftable yet): Bronze Ingot ×5, Iron Ingot ×5, Garnet ×6, Screw ×30
60 Skylar 85 Drop: Wild Kargo (planet-helper)

The ores drop on your route. Iron comes from Fire Boars and Cold Eyes, Mithril from Zombie Mushrooms and Fire Boars, and Garnet from Fire Boars and Stirges. Crafting cap note: meowdb says crafting stops at Lv 8 at launch, which would block The Nine Dragons. Planet-helper lists it at Weaponcrafting 10, above the Lv 8 cap at launch. Check your craft window. See our crafting guide.

Where to get the Lv 30 weapon: NiaMeowDB's NPC shop list (launch prices) shows River's Perion Weapon Store stopping at Lv 25 weapons: Studded Polearm (Lv 20, 13,500 mesos) and Fork on a Stick (7,000 mesos) for the spear and polearm lines. Lv 30 shop weapons appear only under Neri the Fairy or Scott, which NiaMeowDB marks "Not open in this release." So at launch the Lv 30 Mithril Pole Arm isn't sold by any open NPC. Get it from drops or the Free Market, or keep your Lv 25 shop weapon until your Lv 35 craft. The MapleClassic Wiki item page (last edited Sep 4) records no shop or drop source yet.

Spend your 121 SP

Order planet-helper mscw-guidebook (polearm)
1 Rush 1 Rush 1
2 Mastery 5 Mastery 5
3 Final Attack 3 Booster 1, Iron Will 1
4 Mastery 20 (around Lv 38) Max Mastery
5 Final Attack 30 (around Lv 47) Max Final Attack
6 Booster 20, then Rush 20 Then Booster, Iron Will, Rush
7 Iron Will 30 (last) —

Disclosed difference: mscw-guidebook takes Iron Will 1 early, while planet-helper leaves all of Iron Will for last. Planet-helper's FAQ also lists a different order from its key points. We follow its key-points order above.

Use Iron Will, Rush, and Final Attack

  • Iron Will: at max, +50 Weapon DEF and a 35% chance to ignore knockback for 300 seconds, for 25 MP. At Lv 1 it's +20 and 5% (planet-helper). Mscw-guidebook found it cuts damage taken by about 4–6%, and says 35% "is not guaranteed protection."
  • Rush: dash 150 and push up to 6 monsters, with a 2-second cooldown. You can't be knocked back while dashing. Use it to group monsters before Slash Blast.
  • Final Attack: at max, 350% on one target, healing 10% of the damage dealt, capped at 25% of your max HP (planet-helper, mscw-guidebook).

Train from 30 to 70

Planet-helper's route is the same as for a Page (the table is in our Page guide): Ant Tunnel to 33, Wild Boars to 35, Fire Boars to 39, Cold Eyes to 50, Drakes to 55, Wraiths on Line 2 to 62, then Wild Kargo's Area to 70 for the Skylar drop.

For AP, raise total DEX only to your next weapon's minimum and put the rest into STR (mscw-guidebook). Planet-helper says that in Monkey Swamp III you can "dash past the Jr. Neckis and stay on the Zombie Lupins." All jobs' spots are in our training guide.

Example: At Lv 64 in Wild Kargo's Area, keep Iron Will up, Rush to gather Kargos, Slash Blast, and use Final Attack on the last one to heal. Every Kargo kill is a chance at Skylar (planet-helper).

Plan Lv 55–70 gear

Planet-helper says no Warrior weapon type has a Lv 55 weapon, and the Lv 60 and 70 weapons have no recipe.

Lv Weapon Source (planet-helper) Status
60 Skylar (polearm, 85 attack) Wild Kargo, Wild Kargo's Area On your route
60 Holy Spear (spear) Taurospear (Lv 75) Old drop table
70 Spear and polearm Jr. Balrog (Lv 80) Old drop table

Keep your Nine Dragons until Skylar drops. Planet-helper's numbers show you hit Tauromacis (Sanctuary Entrance I) only 90% of the time at Lv 70, reaching 100% at Lv 73, so the Lv 70 drops are a stretch. Drakes in Drake Hunting Ground drop Drake's Blood and Dragon Skin.

Bring the right party

Warriors have no elemental attack in second job (planet-helper). A Cleric covers the holy-weak Zombie Lupins and Wraiths (see our Cleric guide), and an F/P covers the fire-weak Cold Eyes. Planet-helper notes Iron Will is self-only, so in a party your job is to push monsters together with Rush. The party bonus is +10% EXP for 2 players, up to +30% for 4 or more.

Return, boost, or roll an alt Spearman

  • Coming back from old GMS? Hyper Body is third job now, Final Attack is no longer a passive, and Polearm Mastery gives speed instead of accuracy (planet-helper, mscw-guidebook). Third job (Dragon Knight) is in El Nath, which isn't open.
  • Powerleveled Spearman: check that its SP is all in one weapon line and that its DEX fits your next polearm. A powerleveling service won't level Weaponcrafting.
  • Alts: a Spearman alt with Weaponcrafting can make Page and Fighter weapons as well. Spearmen bring Rush for grouping. See our world-first party plan.

What may change at Grand Launch

This guide describes the Founder's Access build as it was on October 13, 2026. Re-check these against Nexon's Grand Launch notes on October 21: whether crafting still stops at craft level 8, whether Forgotten Hollow, Orbis and third jobs stay closed, KPQ channel limits, NPC shop stock, and any Founder's Access-only events or packages mentioned here. Nothing here assumes a closed area or feature will open.

FAQ

Should a Spearman use a spear or a polearm in MapleStory Classic? Start with a polearm. Both sources rank it ahead from Lv 30 to 60, and it's the only line you can craft. A spear makes sense if you find a strong one, or for its DEF ignore against high-DEF monsters.

What is the Spearman skill build? Rush 1, Mastery 5, then max Mastery and Final Attack. Finish Booster, Rush, and Iron Will. That's 120 of your 121 SP (planet-helper, mscw-guidebook).

What does Iron Will do? At max, +50 Weapon DEF and a 35% chance to ignore knockback for 300 seconds (planet-helper). Mscw-guidebook estimates about 4–6% less damage taken.

Does a second-job Spearman get Hyper Body? No. In Classic World, Hyper Body is a third-job Dragon Knight skill.

Does Spearman Final Attack heal? Yes. It heals 10% of the damage dealt, capped at 25% of your max HP.

Where should a Spearman train from 30 to 70? Ant Tunnel I, Wild Boars, Fire Boars, Cold Eyes in Another Path, Drake Hunting Ground, Line 2, and Wild Kargo's Area.

What can a Spearman use at Lv 25? The Janitor's Mop. It's crafted at Weaponcrafting 5 and needs 45 STR and 0 DEX (mscw-guidebook).
