THE GUIDE

Quick summary

  • Max Thunder Bolt first. Three guides recommend it: planet-helper (built on launch data), mscw-guidebook, and metaroad. It hits up to 6 monsters, but it only beats Energy Bolt once you hit 3 or more.
  • Cold Beam hits one target and no longer freezes. Per planet-helper, Beta 2 changed it from 120 damage with a 3-second freeze to 170 damage with a 3-second slow.
  • Pick your skill by element. Thunder Bolt works on lightning-weak Lorangs and Clangs. Cold Beam works on ice-weak Fire Boars and Copper Drakes. Don't cast Cold Beam on Cold Eyes, Drakes, or Maladies.
  • Train at The Land of Wild Boar II (30–40), then Lorang Lorang or Another Path (40–45), then Lorang and Clang (45–50), then Hot Sand (50–70). This is planet-helper's Founder's Access route.
  • Put just enough LUK in for your gear and everything else into INT. Planet-helper also tests an all-INT build using the Yellow Umbrella. The two builds land within 1% of each other from Lv 40 to 60.

Checked against the Founder's Access build on October 13, 2026. Grand Launch is October 21, 2026; see the end of the guide for what may change.

Decide whether Ice/Lightning fits you

Ice/Lightning is a grinder's job. Mscw-guidebook puts it this way: Thunder Bolt handles groups, Cold Beam handles single targets, and the two elements cover each other when a monster resists one. Metaroad's author calls it "probably the strongest class to level in CBT," mainly because of Lorang Lorang Lorang. That is one writer's view from the beta, not a measured ranking.

There are two costs. Thunder Bolt is weak early: mscw-guidebook says it only starts pulling its weight once the skill level reaches the teens, so Energy Bolt stays your single-target spell for a while. Mages also have very little HP. The same source says that at Lv 30, Jr. Wraiths kill you in five hits without Magic Guard.

Example: You want one character that can grind solo and also help a party clear a crowded map. I/L fits. If you want a party healer, a Cleric fits better. If you want to deal fire damage to Yetis later, look at Fire/Poison.

Build first job for MP, not Magic Claw

Every Magician branch shares first job (Lv 10–30). Mscw-guidebook recommends what it calls the MP Saver build. It uses exactly the 61 SP you earn from Lv 10 to 30 and skips Magic Claw:

Order Skill SP Why (mscw-guidebook)
1 (together) Energy Bolt 20 Same damage as Magic Claw, 4 MP cheaper per cast at max
1 (together) Improved MP Recovery 15 More MP from every potion
2 Magic Guard 15 Max by Lv 27; it's a toggle in Classic
3 Max MP Increase 3 Requires Improved MP Recovery 3
4 Magic Armor 8 Requires Magic Guard 3

The guide's simulation says this order saves about 140 Lemons from Lv 10 to 30 compared with maxing Magic Guard first. One trade-off: Energy Bolt is a projectile, so terrain can block it. Magic Claw hits directly. If you level on maps with lots of walls, that is the one case for Magic Claw.

Magic Guard is a toggle. At max level it takes 80% of incoming damage from MP. Mscw-guidebook advises leaving it off and turning it on only when you are surrounded, because MP costs more mesos than HP.

Advance to Ice/Lightning at level 30

Planet-helper lists the quest chain:

  1. Talk to Grendel the Really Old in the Magic Library (Ellinia). The first two steps give 4,780 EXP each.
  2. Take his letter to the Magician Job Instructor in The Forest North of Ellinia.
  3. Collect 30 Dark Marbles (Magician) from Curse Eyes and Horny Mushrooms in the instructor's hidden test area.
  4. Bring The Proof of a Hero back to Grendel and choose I/L Wizard.

Your stats and SP don't reset when you advance. Our job advancement guide covers all the jobs.

Fix your accuracy before moving up. Spells can miss in Classic World. Mscw-guidebook's numbers show a fresh Lv 30 mage hitting Lv 34 Jr. Wraiths only about 40% of the time, rising to about 86% at Lv 34. Planet-helper's table shows the same pattern: at Lv 30 with 67 accuracy you hit Lorangs only 36% of the time, and Torties not at all. The two sites use slightly different accuracy formulas (mscw-guidebook: (INT×1.2 + Lv×2 + LUK×0.6) ÷ 5.1 + 20; planet-helper: ⌊(1.2×INT + 2×Lv + 0.6×LUK) ÷ 5 + 19⌋). Their results are close, but not identical.

Learn the six second-job skills

Values at max level. Thunder Bolt and Cold Beam numbers are from planet-helper's launch data; the rest are from mscw-guidebook unless noted.

Skill Max What it does Notes
Thunder Bolt 30 Lightning damage to up to 6 monsters around you; base 70, 25% electrocute (stun) Range grows from skill level 16 (mscw). Planet-helper says Classic raised base damage from 45
Cold Beam 30 Ice damage to 1 target; base 170; 3-second slow No freeze in Classic. Ice-resistant targets aren't slowed
MP Eater 20 50% chance to drain 50% of a monster's max MP; 5-second cooldown Useless on monsters with no MP, such as Wild Boars and Fire Boars
Meditation 20 +25 magic attack for you and nearby party members, 300 seconds Requires MP Eater 3. About +12% spell damage on mscw's Lv 50 test character
Teleport 20 Blink; cost drops from 55 MP to 15, distance grows from 110 to 150 1 point gives full mobility
Slow 20 Up to 6 monsters: −30 speed, −5 avoidability, 20 seconds Requires Teleport 5

Levels 30–70 give 121 SP. Maxing all six costs 140, so you are 19 short (mscw-guidebook). This is why the guides disagree, and the disagreement is about Teleport, MP Eater, and Slow.

Compare the three skill builds

Build (source) Thunder Bolt Cold Beam MP Eater Meditation Teleport Slow Best for
Teleport build (mscw-guidebook, recommended) 30 30 20 20 20 1 Most players; cheapest Teleport
Kiting build (mscw-guidebook) 30 30 20 20 5 16 Bossing and kiting above your level
MP Eater-light (planet-helper) 30 30 11 20 20 0 Hunting no-MP monsters; 10 SP spare at 70

Planet-helper's order uses 111 SP and leaves the rest "for more MP Eater or Slow." Metaroad goes further and says to ignore Slow. Mscw-guidebook argues the other side with its own math. At max level, MP Eater on Wraiths returns about 18,000 MP an hour, roughly 66 Lemons more than level 1, and Slow matters against bosses. If you farm mostly Wild Boars and Fire Boars, which have no MP, planet-helper's lighter MP Eater makes sense. If you farm Lorangs and Clangs and plan to fight bosses, take mscw-guidebook's full MP Eater.

Example: You plan to stay at Lorang and Clang from 45 to 50 and then join a Jr. Balrog party. Take the kiting build. Those 16 points in Slow let your party land hits on Jr. Balrog sooner.

Follow a skill order by level

All three guides agree on the core order:

  1. Lv 30: 1 point in Teleport (planet-helper, metaroad).
  2. Lv 30–40: Max Thunder Bolt. Mscw-guidebook has it finishing right at Lv 40. Keep using Energy Bolt on single targets.
  3. Lv 40–41: MP Eater to 3, which unlocks Meditation.
  4. Lv 41–48: Max Meditation. Mscw-guidebook says this takes you to Lv 48.
  5. Lv 48–58: Max Cold Beam (mscw-guidebook). Planet-helper puts Teleport 20 before Cold Beam.
  6. Lv 58–70: Finish MP Eater and Teleport, or your Slow points.

Switch spells by element

This is the skill that separates a good I/L from a slow one. Use mscw-guidebook's rule: if a monster resists ice, use Thunder Bolt or Energy Bolt. If it resists lightning, use Cold Beam. If it resists both, go back to Energy Bolt.

Monster (Lv) Weak to Resists Cast Source
Iron Hog (28) Lightning — Thunder Bolt planet-helper
Fire Boar (32) Ice — Cold Beam planet-helper, mscw
Lorang (38) Lightning — Thunder Bolt planet-helper
Cold Eye (40) — Ice Thunder Bolt planet-helper
Raffle (40) Fire Ice Thunder Bolt planet-helper
Copper Drake (45) Ice — Cold Beam planet-helper
Clang (49) Lightning — Thunder Bolt planet-helper
Drake (50) — Fire, Ice Thunder Bolt / Energy Bolt planet-helper
Malady (55) Holy Fire, Ice Thunder Bolt / Energy Bolt planet-helper
Red Drake (60) Ice — Cold Beam planet-helper
Tauromacis (70) Ice Lightning Cold Beam planet-helper, mscw

Mscw-guidebook adds one more: Iron Hogs have 500 weapon defense but only 100 magic defense, and they are weak to lightning. Their drop, Iron Hog's Metal Hoof, is used to make Screws.

Train from 30 to 70

Planet-helper's Founder's Access route, with metaroad's alternatives:

Level Map Main monster Spell Notes
30–40 The Land of Wild Boar II Wild Boar Thunder Bolt 2–3 casts per group (planet-helper). No MP to drain
30–38 Ant Tunnel I (metaroad) Zombie Mushroom Thunder Bolt / Energy Bolt Metaroad: stay here until 35–38 if Thunder Bolt is low
40–45 Lorang Lorang Lorang Thunder Bolt Lightning-weak. Planet-helper: 100% hit rate from Lv 36
40–45 Another Path Cold Eye Thunder Bolt Resists ice. 7–8 casts per group; easier in a party
45–50 Lorang and Clang Clang, Lorang Thunder Bolt Lightning-weak; hits hard, so bring potions
50–70 Hot Sand Tortie, Clang Thunder Bolt Torties cast magic from range
55–70 alt Dangerous Valley II Red Drake Cold Beam Ice-weak; 73% hit at Lv 55, 100% at Lv 60

Planet-helper estimates kills from its EXP table: about 22,000 Clangs from 45 to 50, and about 79,400 Torties from 65 to 70. It notes that EXP values from Lv 50 up are the old reference and remain unconfirmed until launch. Our training guide has the spots for every job.

Forgotten Hollow conflict: metaroad recommends Forgotten Dungeon Tunnel, The End of Fleeting Light, and Primeval Forest II. Nexon's release notes and planet-helper both say Forgotten Hollow is closed during Founder's Access. Planet-helper says to add those maps back once it opens. Their lightning-weak Aqumanders and Echopuses and their ice-weak Duskmanders suit I/L well.

Spend AP and pick a wand

Mscw-guidebook explains why INT counts twice: magic is INT ÷ 2 plus weapon magic attack, and spell damage is multiplied again by an INT factor. LUK adds no damage, so raise it only to your next gear requirement.

Planet-helper tested two routes with launch-area gear:

Level INT + LUK weapon All-INT weapon INT + LUK ahead by
30 Mithril Wand Hardwood Wand +11.6%
40 Yellow Umbrella Yellow Umbrella 0%
50 Wizard Wand Yellow Umbrella −0.9%
60 Wizard Wand Yellow Umbrella −0.8%
70 Evil Wings Yellow Umbrella +7.1%

Three points from the same page:

  • The Yellow Umbrella is a one-handed sword. Wand scrolls don't work on it. Its confirmed dropper, the Raffle, lives only in Forgotten Hollow, which is closed. Without one, keep the Hardwood Wand longer or play INT + LUK.
  • The Hardwood Wand (Lv 15, 34 magic attack, no LUK requirement) is crafted with Woodcrafting Lv 3. No monster drops it.
  • Evil Wings (Lv 65) needs 60 LUK, which means close to 50 AP into LUK on an all-INT mage.

Mscw-guidebook's rule: when a wand and a staff share a level, take the wand. It has 3 more magic attack from Lv 10–25, and cast speed doesn't depend on weapon speed. Metaroad's beta advice to use a Fairy Wand scrolled with Lesser Wand Magic Attack scrolls predates launch. Planet-helper says the Fairy Wand and Cromi only drop or are crafted outside the launch area. For scroll tiers and sources, see our scrolling guide.

Use Slow and Cold Beam on bosses

Bosses are where the kiting build pays off. Mscw-guidebook's level-70 test shows Jr. Balrog (Lv 80, 49 avoidability) can't be hit at all by mages and warriors in clean gear until Slow lands. With Slow, their hit rate rises to about 18–20%. Thieves go from 9–14% to 29–35%, and bowmen from 21–26% to 42–47%. Against Mano and the Mushmoms, every class already hits 100%, so Slow adds nothing there.

On single targets, Cold Beam is the choice in every case mscw-guidebook models. Its level-70 numbers (infinite HP, no movement, so treat them as relative only) show Cold Beam doing about 948,000 damage over five minutes on one ice-weak Tauromacis. Thunder Bolt does about 937,000 on four, because Tauromacis resists lightning. See our bosses guide for spawn times.

Run a clean combat routine

  • Refresh Meditation every 300 seconds. Planet-helper notes it buffs your party as well.
  • Use Thunder Bolt on 3 or more clustered monsters, and Cold Beam or Energy Bolt on 1–2 (mscw-guidebook).
  • Keep Magic Guard off until you're surrounded.
  • Party up. Planet-helper lists the party EXP bonus as +10% for 2 players, +20% for 3, and +30% for 4 or more. Thunder Bolt makes you a strong mobber on split-platform maps.
  • Bring extra potions on maps with no-MP monsters (Wild Boars, Fire Boars), where MP Eater does nothing.

Example: At Lorang and Clang, stand on an upper platform, Thunder Bolt the group, and Teleport back when a Clang closes in. Metaroad describes Lorang Lorang Lorang's platforms as spots where mages "can grind without taking damage." That's its beta observation, not a guarantee.

Return to an I/L after a break

  • Coming back from old GMS? Two changes matter. Cold Beam no longer freezes, and Thunder Bolt hits harder (planet-helper: base 70, up from 45). Nexon's notes say third job (Ice/Lightning Mage) isn't in Founder's Access, and planet-helper lists Orbis outside the launch regions.
  • Stopped after a closed test? Check every Forgotten Hollow map and wand in your notes against what's open now. Most beta routes went through it.

Plan a boosted or alt I/L

  • Boosted or powerleveled character: check its skill points against the table above before you play. A Lv 50 I/L without Meditation, or with Cold Beam maxed before Thunder Bolt, is a valid but different build. A powerleveling service changes how fast you level, not how you play the job.
  • Alt: a second Magician repeats the same first job, so the MP Saver build applies again. Pair an I/L with a Cleric alt for party play, and see our world-first party plan.
  • Choosing between jobs: our job tier list compares all of them.

What may change at Grand Launch

This guide describes the Founder's Access build as it was on October 13, 2026. Re-check these against Nexon's Grand Launch notes on October 21: whether crafting still stops at craft level 8, whether Forgotten Hollow, Orbis and third jobs stay closed, KPQ channel limits, NPC shop stock, and any Founder's Access-only events or packages mentioned here. Nothing here assumes a closed area or feature will open.

FAQ

What should an Ice/Lightning Wizard max first in MapleStory Classic? Thunder Bolt, according to planet-helper, mscw-guidebook, and metaroad. Put 1 point in Teleport first. Some players max Cold Beam first for single-target farming, which mscw-guidebook calls a valid alternative.

Does Cold Beam freeze in MapleStory Classic World? No. Planet-helper's launch data shows 170 base damage to 1 target with a 3-second slow. It was 120 damage with a 3-second freeze before Beta 2.

Is Slow worth it for I/L? For grinding, mostly not. Metaroad says to skip it, and mscw-guidebook's main build takes 1 point. For bossing, mscw-guidebook's numbers show Slow is what lets mages hit Jr. Balrog at all.

Where should an I/L train from 30 to 70? Planet-helper's route: The Land of Wild Boar II (30–40), Lorang Lorang or Another Path (40–45), Lorang and Clang (45–50), and Hot Sand (50–70).

Should I/L go all-INT? Either works. Planet-helper finds INT + LUK about 12% ahead at Lv 30–35, level from 40 to 60, and about 7% ahead at 65–70 with Evil Wings. All-INT depends on a Yellow Umbrella, which drops in closed Forgotten Hollow.

Which monsters should I not use Cold Beam on? Cold Eyes, Raffles, Rafflesias, Aqumanders, Drakes, and Maladies all resist ice (planet-helper). Use Thunder Bolt or Energy Bolt on them.

When does I/L get third job? Not in Founder's Access. Nexon's release notes cap jobs at second job for now.
