THE GUIDE

Checked against v1.0.0 on October 29, 2026.

Spears and polearms are the Spearman's weapons, and they are the longest-reaching melee weapons in MapleStory Classic World. The game has 9 spears and 10 polearms, from the level 10 Spear and Pole Arm to the level 70 Redemption and The Gold Dragon. This MapleStory Classic polearm and spear guide lists all 19 with attack, speed, STR and DEX needs, price and source. It covers River's and Cutthroat Manny's live prices, which polearms you can craft under the level 8 crafting cap, spear vs polearm math by level, scrolls and an upgrade path.

Quick summary

  • 19 weapons: 9 spears and 10 polearms, all with 7 upgrade slots. Polearms have more attack at most levels but are Slow (8). Spears from level 40 to 60 are Normal (6) (MapleStory Quest, Public Release client).
  • River sells five of them in Perion, from 5,000 to 13,500 mesos, up to the level 20 Studded Polearm. Cutthroat Manny in Kerning City sells the three cheapest (NiaMeowDB launch prices).
  • Weaponcrafting makes three polearms at launch: Janitor's Mop (craft 5), Axe Pole Arm (craft 7) and Crescent Polearm (craft 8). No spear has a recipe. The Nine Dragons needs craft 10, past the launch cap of 8 (MapleStory Quest).
  • Polearms win basic-attack damage at every level, by our math: 8.5–20.5% over the same-level spear, using NiaMeowDB's swing and stab multipliers and speed ladder.
  • El Moth sells Spear and Polearm Attack Scroll: Lessers for 60,000 mesos, for a guaranteed +1 attack each (NiaMeowDB; MapleStory Quest).
  • Grand Launch buffed Spearmen: Final Attack now lasts its full 60 seconds, Iron Body gives +20–40% Weapon DEF and Improved HP Recovery +20–50% (Nexon).

Stats, needs, sell prices and recipe levels are MapleStory Quest's client read; NiaMeowDB's item pages show the same attack values (for example Axe Pole Arm +60, Skylar +85). Shop prices are from NiaMeowDB's complete post-launch shop lists. The pattern from level 30 is simple: STR = 2 × level + 5 and DEX = level, for example 85 STR and 40 DEX at level 40 (our reading of the client values).

Not only for Warriors: the Spear, Fork on a Stick, Pole Arm and Janitor's Mop are listed "for warriors, bowmen and thieves" (MapleStory Quest). With 15 STR, the Pole Arm (35 attack) is the hardest-hitting level 10 weapon a beginner can buy.

Buy from River and Manny

Weapon River (Perion) Cutthroat Manny (Kerning City)
Spear 5,000 5,000
Fork on a Stick 7,000 7,000
Pole Arm 5,000 5,000
Iron Ball 7,000 –
Studded Polearm 13,500 –

Both lists are complete as of Grand Launch: River carries 31 items and Manny 20 (NiaMeowDB), and neither sells a level 30 spear or polearm. Older community records list a Forked Spear and Mithril Pole Arm at River for 26,000 mesos, but they aren't in his live stock. Our Perion guide has River's full list.

Craft the polearm line

Polearm Weaponcrafting Character level Ingredients Fee
Janitor's Mop 5 25 1 Iron Ingot, 30 Processed Leather, 2 Processed Wood, 15 Screws 5,500
Axe Pole Arm 7 35 4 Iron Ingots, 3 Mithril Ingots, 21 Screws 9,000
Crescent Polearm 8 40 4 Iron Ingots, 2 Mithril Ingots, 2 Processed Wood, 24 Screws 11,500
The Nine Dragons 10 (not at launch) 50 5 Bronze Ingots, 5 Iron Ingots, 6 Garnets, 30 Screws 16,500

Recipes come from MapleStory Quest. Crafting stops at craft level 8 in the live game (henesys.gg), so The Nine Dragons can't be made yet. Each fee equals the weapon's NPC sell price, so vendoring a spare gets the fee back. Our Weaponcrafting guide prices the route to craft 8, and our Smithing guide and ore guide cover the ingots.

Our math on inputs: ingots take 5 ore each, and one Screw craft makes 10 Screws from 1 Bronze and 1 Iron Ingot (our Weaponcrafting guide). An Axe Pole Arm takes 20 Iron Ore and 15 Mithril Ore, plus 3 Screw crafts (another 15 ore). A Crescent Polearm takes 20 Iron Ore, 10 Mithril Ore, 2 Processed Wood and 3 Screw crafts.

Settle spear vs polearm

Three numbers decide basic-attack damage:

  • Swing and stab: a normal attack swings 60% of the time and stabs 40% (NiaMeowDB). Polearms get a 3.5 multiplier per swing and 1.5 per stab, and spears the reverse (NiaMeowDB). That averages 2.7 for polearms and 2.3 for spears.
  • Speed: NiaMeowDB's ladder gives 74 attacks a minute at Normal (6), 68 at Slow (7) and 66 at Slow (8).
  • Attack: from the tables above.

Our math (attack × attacks a minute × average multiplier, a simplified comparison):

Level Spear Polearm Polearm lead
30 Forked Spear: 52 × 68 × 2.3 = 8,133 Mithril Pole Arm: 55 × 66 × 2.7 = 9,801 +20.5%
35 Nakamaki: 8,915 Axe Pole Arm: 10,692 +19.9%
40 Zeco: 10,042 Crescent Polearm: 11,583 +15.3%
50 Serpent's Tongue: 11,744 The Nine Dragons: 13,365 +13.8%
60 Holy Spear: 13,956 Skylar: 15,147 +8.5%
70 Redemption: 14,858 The Gold Dragon: 16,929 +13.9%

This covers basic attacks only, and it applies the multiplier to the whole hit. On the full damage formula, where the multiplier scales only your STR, the gap is smaller: our damage formula guide found about 13% instead of 17% in its example. It leaves out Spear Mastery's 20% chance to ignore Weapon DEF, which replaced the old critical-rate bonus in the Founder's Access rework (henesys.gg), and Polearm Mastery's +20 speed (NiaMeowDB). Booster moves a Slow (8) polearm to Normal (6), 900 to 810 ms (our attack speed guide). Reach is identical: both top out at 133 px (our weapon reach guide).

Final Attack works with both. Spearman Final Attack is a 25% trigger that deals 350% and absorbs 10% of the damage as HP, and since Grand Launch it lasts its full 60 seconds after you cast it (henesys.gg; Nexon). Final Attack: Spear and Final Attack: Polearm are separate skills (henesys.gg), so pick the weapon family before you spend SP.

Our pick: a polearm, and the crafted line from 35 to 40. Our Spearman guide covers the skill build.

Scroll your weapon

Scroll Success Effect Risk
Spear or Polearm Attack Scroll: Lesser 100% +1 attack None
Intermediate 60% +2 None
Greater 10% +4 None
Chaos 10% +5 50% to destroy

Odds come from MapleStory Quest. El Moth sells Spear and Polearm Lessers for 60,000 mesos each, the two-handed price; one-handed weapon Lessers cost 30,000 (NiaMeowDB). Our NPC shops guide lists his full stock. Our math: seven Lessers add +7 attack for 420,000 mesos. On a Crescent Polearm, 72 attack instead of 65 is about 11% more basic-attack damage. Our scrolling guide covers the tiers and our damage formula guide covers how attack scales.

Follow an upgrade path

Level Pick Source Running cost (our math)
10 Pole Arm River or Manny 5,000
15 Iron Ball River 12,000
20 Studded Polearm River 25,500
25 Janitor's Mop Weaponcrafting 5 or trade +5,500 fee
30 Mithril Pole Arm Drop or trade –
35 Axe Pole Arm Weaponcrafting 7 or trade +9,000 fee
40 Crescent Polearm Weaponcrafting 8 or trade +11,500 fee
50+ The Nine Dragons, Skylar, The Gold Dragon Drops or later crafting –

Older data lists Skylar from Wild Kargo and Redemption from Jr. Balrog at 4% (MapleStory Quest; our Jr. Balrog guide). New Warriors can start with our Warrior guide 1–30.

Handle alts and returning players

  • Returning players: River's shop stops at level 20, so you can't buy a level 30 Mithril Pole Arm as you could in old GMS (NiaMeowDB).
  • Cosmetics: the Halloween Mystery Fashion Crate's Witch's Broomstick weapon cover can only be equipped with spears and polearms (Nexon, until November 4).
  • Beginners: the Pole Arm needs only 15 STR and works for Warriors, Bowmen and Thieves.
  • Weaponcrafters: the Axe Pole Arm and Crescent Polearm are good trade goods, since no launch shop sells a level 30+ polearm.
  • Rushing a Spearman: check that your DEX fits the next polearm before you level past it, and level Weaponcrafting alongside if you want the crafted line. Our shields guide explains why the off-hand stays empty with a spear or polearm.

What changed for spears and polearms at Grand Launch

Grand Launch (v1.0.0, October 21, 2026) didn't change any spear or polearm stat. It changed the Spearman around them, per Nexon's Grand Launch maintenance notice:

Change Before v1.0.0
Final Attack (Spear and Polearm) Ended after 30 seconds by mistake Lasts 60 seconds
Iron Body Weapon DEF +5–25% +20–40%
Improved HP Recovery +5–20% from potions +20–50%
Shop stock Unconfirmed River and Manny stop at level 20 (NiaMeowDB)
Crafting cap Craft level 8 Still 8, so the Crescent Polearm is the top craftable

The October 15 patch also stopped certain skills from knocking bosses back (Nexon). Our patch notes tracker lists every change, and the MapleStory Classic hub collects every guide for the game.

FAQ

Is a spear or polearm better in MapleStory Classic? A polearm for basic attacks, by 8.5–20.5% depending on level by our math. Spears are faster from 40 to 60, and Spear Mastery can ignore DEF (henesys.gg; NiaMeowDB).

What is the best polearm in MapleStory Classic right now? The Crescent Polearm: level 40, +65 attack, made at Weaponcrafting 8 (MapleStory Quest). Higher polearms exist only as drops in older data.

Where do I buy a polearm? River in Perion sells the Pole Arm, Iron Ball and Studded Polearm. Cutthroat Manny in Kerning City sells the Pole Arm (NiaMeowDB).

Can you craft spears or The Nine Dragons? No spear has a recipe; only polearms do. The Nine Dragons needs Weaponcrafting 10, and crafting stops at level 8 in v1.0.0, so the Crescent Polearm at Weaponcrafting 8 is the best you can craft.

Where do I buy polearm attack scrolls? El Moth sells the Polearm Attack Scroll: Lesser for 60,000 mesos, for a guaranteed +1 attack (NiaMeowDB; MapleStory Quest).
